summary Recent developments in Additive Manufacturing are creating possibilities to make not only rapid prototypes, but directly manufactured customised components. This paper investigates the potential for combining standard building materials with customised nodes that are individually optimised in response to local load conditions in non-standard, irregular, or doubly curved frame structures. This research iteration uses as a vehicle for investigation the SmartNodes Pavilion, a temporary structure with 3D printed nodes built for the 2015 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture in Hong Kong. The pavilion is the most recent staged output of the SmartNodes Project. It builds on the findings in earlier iterations by introducing topologically constrained node forms that marry the principals of the evolved optimised node shape with topological constraints imposed to meet the printing challenges. The 4m high canopy scale prototype structure in this early design research iteration represents the node forms using plastic Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM).

summary Algorithmic design allows architects to design using a programming-based approach. Current algorithmic design environments are based on existing computer-aided design applications or building information modeling applications, such as AutoCAD, Rhinoceros 3D, or Revit, which, due to their complexity, fail to give architects the immediate feedback they need to explore algorithmic design. In addition, they do not address the current trend of moving applications to the cloud to improve their availability. To address these problems, we propose a software architecture for an algorithmic design integrated development environment (IDE), based on web technologies, that is more interactive than competing algorithmic design IDEs. Besides providing an intuitive editing interface which facilitates programming tasks for architects, its performance can be an order of magnitude faster than current algorithmic design IDEs, thus supporting real-time feedback with more complex algorithmic design programs. Moreover, our solution also allows architects to export the generated model to their preferred computer-aided design applications. This results in an algorithmic design environment that is accessible from any computer, while offering an interactive editing environment that integrates into the architect’s workflow.

summary Virtual reality provides a heightened sense of immersion and spatial awareness that provides a unique opportunity for designers to perceive and evaluate scale and space. At the same time, traditional sketches and small-size physical models provide tactile feedback that allow designers to create, comprehend, and explore complex geometric relationships. Through the development of vSpline, a modeling application for virtual reality, we explore the potential for design within a virtual spatial environment to blur the boundaries between digital and physical stages of design, and seek to combine the best of both virtual and analog worlds. By using spline-based closed meshes created directly in three-dimensional space, our software provides the capabilities to design, modify, and save the information in the virtual world and seamlessly convert the data to evaluate the printing of 3D physical models. We identify and discuss important questions that arise regarding relationships of perception of scale, digital-to-physical domains, and new methods of input and manipulation within a 3D immersive space.

summary Many great architectural endeavors today engage in a multi software approach, as each specialty involved needs a different software, and different task required from the architect, such as 3D modeling, analysis or rendering, also benefit from the use of different tools. Combining them in the same process is not always a successful endeavor. A more effective portability mechanism is needed, and Algorithmic Design (AD) has the potential to become one. This paper explores the advantages of the algorithmic approach to the design process, and proposes a methodology capable of integrating the different tools and paradigms currently used in architecture. The methodology is based on the development of a computer program that describes not only the intended model, but also additional tasks, such as the required analysis and rendering. It takes advantage of CAD, BIM and analysis tools, with little effort when it comes to the transition between them.

summary The digital fabrication of monolithic shell structures is presenting some challenges related to the interface between computational design and fabrication techniques, such as the methods chosen for the suitable parametrization of the geometry based on materiality characteristics and construction constrains, the digital optimization criteria of variables, and the translation of the relevant code used for digital fabrication. Specifically, the translation from the digital to the physical when a definite materiality appears during the digital fabrication process proves to be a crucial step, which is typically approached as a linear and predetermined sequence. This often-difficult step offers the potential of embedding a certain level of interactivity between the fabricator and the materialized model during the fabrication process in order to allow for real time adjustments or corrections. This paper features monolithic shell construction processes that promote a simple interface of live interaction between the fabricator and the tool control during the digital fabrication process. The implementation of novel digital and physical methods will be explored, offering the possibility of being combined with automated fabrication actions controlled by real time inputs with virtual reality [VR] influenced by 3d scanning and 3d CAD programs, and the possibility of incorporating augmented reality [AR].

summary Computational visual simulations are extremely useful and powerful tools for decision-making. The use of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) has become a common phenomenon due to real-time and interactive visual simulation tools in architectural and urban design studies and presentations. In this study, a demonstration is performed to integrate Structure from Motion (SfM) into VR and AR. A 3D modeling method is explored by SfM under realtime rendering as a solution for the modeling cost in large-scale VR. The study examines the application of camera parameters of SfM to realize an appropriate registration and tracking accuracy in marker-less AR to visualize full-scale design projects on a planned construction site. The proposed approach is applied to plural real architectural and urban design projects, and results indicate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

summary The introduction of robotics into the field of 3D printing allows designers and fabricators to truly print in three dimensions, focusing more on the volumetric properties of the extrusion rather than two-dimensional slicing and, furthermore, introducing forces that can defy gravity. This paper introduces a new method of robotic extrusion using magnetic fields to construct ferrostructures. Using a custom tool and ferromagnetic material, the research develops a construction process utilizing the off-plane toolpaths of a 6-axis industrial robotic arm to pull, attract, and repel material into a hardened structure. The ferromagnetic liquid forms spikes and connections around the invisible magnetic fields, and upon hardening, freezes the field into a new physical artifact. This extrusion process allows a fabrication that defies gravity. The robotic fabrication process allows microextrusions to build off of one another, scaling the result to approach an architectural scale and bringing a new freedom to the designer and the fabricator.

summary Additive manufacturing techniques and materials have evolved rapidly during the last decade. Applications in architecture, engineering and construction are getting more attention as 3D printing is trying to find its place in the industry. Due to high material prices for metal 3d printing and in-homogenous material behaviour in printed plastic, 3D printing has not yet had a very significant impact at the scale of buildings. Limitations on scale, cost, and structural performance have also hindered the advancement of the technology and research up to this point. The research presented here takes a case study for the application of 3D printing at a furniture scale based on a novel custom optimisation approach for structural nodes. Through the concentration of non-standard geometry on the highly complex custom optimised nodes, 3D printers at industrial product scale could be used for the additive manufacture of the structural nodes. This research presents a design strategy with a digital process chain using parametric modeling, virtual prototyping, structural simulation, custom optimisation and additive CAD/CAM for a digital workflow from design to production. Consequently, the digital process chain for the development of structural nodes was closed in a holistic manner at a suitable scale.

summary The development and the innovation of tools, techniques and digital applications represent a challenge for those who are in charge of architectural education to keep up with this development. This is because these techniques provide potentials that are not available in the traditional method of teaching. This raises an important question: can these tools and techniques help to achieve the targeted outcomes of education? This research paper discusses how to integrate both digital 3D models, of CAAD, and interactive applications for the development of architectural education curriculum. To test this, a case study has been conducted on the subject of building construction, for the second year at the faculty of engineering, specifically, the bearing walls construction system. In addition, this study has been divided into three parts. Through the first part, the scientific content of the curriculum, which tackles the bearing walls, has been prepared. The second part shows how to convert the scientific content into an interactive content in which the students learn through the experiment and the simulation of the traditional construction methods as the students a acquire construction skills and the ability to imagine different structural complexities. The third part includes the creation of both the application and the software containing the interactive curriculum. Workshop for the students has been held as a case study to test the effectiveness of this development and to recognize the pros and cons. The results confirmed the importance of integrating this applications into architectural education.

summary This research focuses on the transformation from design to fabrication without CAD models. In contrast to the conventional "design - modeling - fabrication" workflow, which involves multiple software, we experimented with a method of programming the bespoke fabrication process, and consequently defining the artifact. Algebraic models are employed to specify the materialization process carried out by various CNC machines. We used the programming language Java to create machine instructions for 3D printers, milling machines, and robots. In this method, design and production are not two separated processes; rather we regarded them as two aspects of one whole activity. Proficiency in machines and materials could contribute to design innovation.

summary There has been significant research into large-scale 3D printing processes with industrial robots. These were initially used to extrude in a layered manner. In recent years, research has aimed to make use of six degrees of freedom instead of three. These so called "spatial extrusion" methods are based on a toolhead, mounted on a robot arm, that extrudes a material along a non horizontal spatial vector. This method is more time efficient but up to now has suffered from a number of limiting geometrical and structural constraints. This limited the formal possibilities to highly repetitive truss-like patterns. This paper presents a generalised approach to spatial extrusion based on the notion of discreteness. It explores how discrete computational design methods offer increased control over the organisation of toolpaths, without compromising design intent while maintaining structural integrity. The research argues that, compared to continuous methods, discrete methods are easier to prototype, compute and manufacture. A discrete approach to spatial printing uses a single toolpath fragment as basic unit for computation. This paper will describe a method based on a voxel space. The voxel contains geometrical information, toolpath fragments, that is subsequently assembled into a continuous, kilometers long path. The path can be designed in response to different criteria, such as structural performance, material behaviour or aesthetics. This approach is similar to the design of meta-materials - synthetic composite materials with a programmed performance that is not found in natural materials. Formal differentiation and structural performance is achieved, not through continuous variation, but through the recombination of discrete toolpath fragments. summary Gesture-based natural interfaces necessitate research into gestures that are intuitive for designers and effective for natural interaction. Intuitive knowledge is significant for conceptual design as it reduces time taken to complete tasks and improves usability of products. In a previously conducted experiment, we elicited gestures for 3D CAD modeling tasks for conceptual architectural design. In this study, we present a preliminary analysis of intuitiveness scores of gestures and evaluators’ ratings to analyze which gestures were more intuitive and effective for CAD manipulation tasks. Results show that gestures with high intuitive scores were not necessarily rated as effective by evaluators and that bimanual symmetric gestures consistently scored high for both intuitiveness and effectiveness. Based on our findings we give recommendations for the design of gesture-based CAD modeling systems for single and multiple users.

summary This research established classification system which contains five principles and variables to classify the types of the virtual landscape in digital games. The principles of the classification are Story, Space Shape, Space and Action Dimension, User Complexity and Interaction Level. With this classification system, our research group found the most representative types of virtual landscape in the digital game market through 1996 to 2016. Although mathematically there can be 288 types of virtual landscape, only 68 types have been used in the game market in recent twenty years. Among the 68 types, we defined 3 types of virtual landscape as the most representative types based on the growth curve and a number of cases. Those three representative types of virtual landscapes are Generating / Face / 3D-3D / Single / Partial, Providing / Chain / 3D-3D / Single / Partial and Providing / Linear / 2D-2D / Single / Partial. With the result, the researchers will be able to establish the virtual landscape design framework for the future research.

title From Linear to Manifold Interpolation: Exemplifying the paradigm shift through interpolation

summary The advent of artificial intelligence, specifically neural networks, has marked a significant turning point in the field of computation. During such transformative times, we are often faced with a dearth of appropriate vocabulary, which forces us to rely on existing terms, regardless of their inadequacy. This paper argues that the term “interpolation,” typically used in deep learning (DL), is a prime example of this phenomenon. It is not uncommon for beginners to misunderstand its meaning, as DL pioneer Francois Chollet (2017) has noted. This misreading is especially true in the discipline of architecture, and this study aims to demonstrate how the meaning of “interpolation” has evolved in the second digital turn. We begin by illustrating, using 2D data, the difference between linear interpolation in the context of topological figures and its use in DL algorithms. We then demonstrate how 3DGANs can be employed to interpolate across different topologies in complex 3D space, highlighting the distinction between linear and manifold interpolation. In both 2D and 3D examples, our results indicate that the process does not involve continuous morphing but instead resembles the piecing together of a jigsaw puzzle to form many parts of a larger ambient space. Our study reveals how previous architectural research on DL has employed the term “interpolation” without clarifying the crucial differences from its use in the first digital turn. We demonstrate the new possibilities that manifold interpolation offers for architecture, which extend well beyond parametric variations of the same topology.

summary Traditional construction site monitoring primarily relies on a human presence. Automated construction progress monitoring is expected to make this process much more efficient and precise. The planned state of construction (as-planned) must be validated by the actual state (as-built) during automated construction progress monitoring. This research uses an integrated application of high-resolution low-altitude UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) oblique photogrammetry and Building Information Modeling (BIM) technologies for construction site management. A case study was carried out for a renewable energy development program in the JiaDing District of Shanghai, China. A high-resolution 3D model of the construction site acquired by our multi-motor UAV provides data to illustrate the as-built state of the construction program. Comparison of the UAV-based 3D model (as-built) with the BIM-based 3D model (as-planned) for a specific chimney was used for dynamic construction site monitoring. Our results show 3D illustrations of construction progress. This research demonstrates that the BIM technology in conjunction with the use of UAV photogrammetry provides efficient and precise as-built data collection and illustration of construction progress.

summary Clay Non-Wovens develops a new approach for robotic fabrication, applying traditional craft methods and materials to a fundamentally technical and precise fabrication methodology. This paper includes new explorations in robotic fabrication, additive manufacturing, complex patterning, and techniques bound in the arts and crafts. Clay Non-Wovens seeks to develop a system of porous cladding panels that negotiate circumstances of natural daylighting through parameters dealing with textile (woven and non-woven) patterning and line typologies. While additive manufacturing has been built predominantly on the basis of extrusion, technological developments in the field of 3D printing seldom acknowledge the bead or line of such extrusions as more than a nuisance. Blurring of recognizable layers is often seen as progress, but it does away with visible traces of a fabrication process. Historically, however, construction methods in architecture and the building industry have celebrated traces of making ranging from stone cutting to log construction. With growing interest in digital craft within the fields of architecture and design, we seek to reconcile our relationship with the extruded bead and reinterpret it as a fiber and three-dimensional drawing tool. The traditional clay coil is to be reconsidered as a structural fiber rather than a tool for solid construction. Building upon this body of robotically fabricated clay structures required the development of three distinct but connected techniques: 1. construction of a simple end effector for extrusion; 2. development of a clay body and; 3. using computational design tools to develop formwork and toolpath geometries.

summary In this research, we present a system to allow designers to adaptively control an industrial robot from within a 3D modeling environment, for the purpose of real time feedback with respect to visual imagery of the object as well as robot pose during the fabrication process. Our work uses the Kuka industrial robots due to their capability in fabrication and programmability, and the Rhino 3D modeling software with the Grasshopper plugin which allows for visual programming for designers. A Microsoft Kinect sensor is used to provide visual feedback of the part during the fabrication process. We present the methodology used to develop the system, explaining various design and architecture choices made to allow for easy use of our system, while ensuring our system is open to further extension. We also show qualitative results of the fabrication process performed using our system in order to validate that our proposed system improves the interaction and collaboration between designer and robot when performing the task, in contrast to the iterative process that is generally followed.

title Tangible Immersion for Ecological Design

summary We introduce tangible immersion—virtual reality coupled with tangible interaction—to foster interdisciplinary collaboration in a critical yet creative design process. Integrating tangible, embodied interaction with geospatial modeling and immersive virtual environments (IVE) can make 3D modeling fast and natural, while enhancing it with realistic graphics and quantitative analytics. We have developed Tangible Landscape, a technology that links a physical model with a geographic information system and 3D-modeling platform through a real-time cycle of interaction, 3D scanning, geospatial computation, and 3D rendering. With this technology, landscape architects, other professionals, and the public can collaboratively explore design alternatives through an iterative process of intuitive ideation, geocomputational analysis, realistic rendering, and critical analysis. This is demonstrated with a test case for interdisciplinary problem-solving, in which a landscape architect and geoscientist use Tangible Landscape to collaboratively design landforms, hydrologic systems, planting, and a trail network for a brownfield site. Using this tangible immersive environment they rapidly explored alternative scenarios. We discuss how the participants used real-time analytics to collaboratively assess trade-offs between environmental and experiential factors, balancing landscape complexity, biodiversity, remediation capacity, and aesthetics. Together they explored how the relationship between landforms and natural processes affected the performance of the designed landscape. Technologies that couple tangible geospatial modeling with IVEs have the potential to transform the design process by breaking down disciplinary boundaries, but may also offer new ways to imagine space and democratize design.

summary We present the initial findings of our research project aiming at development of a 3D-printing process for wood composites. The 3D-printing method employed is based on material extrusion principle and utilizes industrial robotics for position and motion control. The unique characteristic of our approach is in the development of the material where we employ exclusively organic components for both the matrix and reinforcement; a decision informed by prioritizing environmental considerations.
