keywords The paper discusses co-design, development, production, application of TreeHugger (see Figure 1). The co-design among community and trans-disciplinary participants with different expertise required scope of media mix, switching between analogue, digital and back again. This involves different degrees of physical and digital 'GIGA-Mapping' (Sevaldson, 2011, 2015), 'Grasshopper3d' (Davidson, 2017) scripting and mix of digital and analogue fabrication to address the real life world. The critical participation of this 'Time-Based Design' (Sevaldson, 2004, 2005) process is the interaction of the prototype with eco-systemic agency of the adjacent environment - the eco-systemic performance. The TreeHugger is a responsive solid wood insect hotel, generating habitats and edible landscaping (Creasy, 2004) on bio-tope in city centre of Prague. To extend the impact, the code was uploaded for communities to download, local-specifically edit and apply worldwide. Thus, the fusion of discussed processes is multi-scaled and multi-layered, utilised in emerging design field: Systemic Approach to Architectural Performance.

summary Fiber composite materials have tremendous potential in architectural applications due to their high strength-to-weight ratio and their ability to be formed into complex shapes. Novel fabrication processes can be based on the unique affordances and characteristics of fiber composites. Because these materials are lightweight and have high tensile strength, a radically different approach to fabrication becomes possible, which combines low-payload yet long-range machines—such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)—with strong, precise, yet limited-reach industrial robots. This collaborative concept enables a scalable fabrication setup for long-span fiber composite construction. This paper describes the integrated design process and design development of a large-scale cantilevering demonstrator, in which the fabrication setup, robotic constraints, material behavior, and structural performance were integrated in an iterative design process.

summary Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) as an integrated field between architecture and sociology has created practical guidelines for evaluating indoor human behavior within a built environment. This research builds on recent attempts to integrate datafication and machine learning into POE practices that may one day assist Building Information Modeling (BIM) and multi-agent modeling. This research is based on two premises: 1) that the proliferation of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology allows us to collect a building user’s data cost-effectively and 2) that the growing application of machine learning algorithms allows us to process, analyze and synthesize data efficiently. This study illustrates that the mobile platform HalO can serve as a generic tool for datafication and automation of data analysis of the movement of a building user. In this research, the iOS mobile application HalO, combined with BLE beacons enable building providers (architects, developers, engineers and facility managers etc.) to collect the user’s indoor location data. Triangulation was used to pinpoint the user’s indoor positions, and k-means clustering was applied to classify users into different gathering groups. Through four research procedures—Design Intention Analysis, Data Collection, Data Storage and Data Analysis—the visualized and classified data helps building providers to better evaluate building performance, optimize building operations and improve the accuracy of simulations.

summary This thesis research presents an integrated workflow for the design and fabrication of large-scale architectural envelopes using swarms of drones and inflatable structures as formworks. The work lies at the intersection of architecture, biology and robotics, incorporating generative design with digital fabrication techniques. The proposed approach aims to investigate the tectonic potential of computational systems which encode behavioral strategies inside an agent-based model. It is from local interactions taking place at the micro-scale of complex systems that a new set of architectural tendencies seem to emerge. The authors focused on the strategies developed by colonies of social spiders during the construction of three-dimensional webs. Their communication system and the characteristics of the material structure have been then modelled and translated in a digital environment. A physical fabrication process, in which the simulated agents become drones in a real world environment, was concurrently developed. The goal was to investigate the architectural possibilities given by an autonomous aerial machine depositing fibrous material over inflatable formworks and its potential usefulness in specific sites where overall conditions don't allow traditional construction techniques.

summary Algorithmic design allows architects to design using a programming-based approach. Current algorithmic design environments are based on existing computer-aided design applications or building information modeling applications, such as AutoCAD, Rhinoceros 3D, or Revit, which, due to their complexity, fail to give architects the immediate feedback they need to explore algorithmic design. In addition, they do not address the current trend of moving applications to the cloud to improve their availability. To address these problems, we propose a software architecture for an algorithmic design integrated development environment (IDE), based on web technologies, that is more interactive than competing algorithmic design IDEs. Besides providing an intuitive editing interface which facilitates programming tasks for architects, its performance can be an order of magnitude faster than current algorithmic design IDEs, thus supporting real-time feedback with more complex algorithmic design programs. Moreover, our solution also allows architects to export the generated model to their preferred computer-aided design applications. This results in an algorithmic design environment that is accessible from any computer, while offering an interactive editing environment that integrates into the architect’s workflow.

summary Many great architectural endeavors today engage in a multi software approach, as each specialty involved needs a different software, and different task required from the architect, such as 3D modeling, analysis or rendering, also benefit from the use of different tools. Combining them in the same process is not always a successful endeavor. A more effective portability mechanism is needed, and Algorithmic Design (AD) has the potential to become one. This paper explores the advantages of the algorithmic approach to the design process, and proposes a methodology capable of integrating the different tools and paradigms currently used in architecture. The methodology is based on the development of a computer program that describes not only the intended model, but also additional tasks, such as the required analysis and rendering. It takes advantage of CAD, BIM and analysis tools, with little effort when it comes to the transition between them.

summary This paper presents a continuation of research on the prototyping of multi-agent systems for architectural design with a focus on generative design as a means to improve design exploration in the context of multiple objectives and complexity. The interactive design framework focuses on coupling force, environmental constraints and fabrication parameters as design drivers for the form finding of shell structures. The objective of the research is to enable designers to intuitively generate free form shells structures that are conditioned by multiple objectives for architectural exploration in early stages of design. The generated geometries are explored through reciprocal frames, and are evaluated in an automated fashion both on local and global levels in terms of their structural and environmental performance and constructability. The analytical results along with fabrication constraints are fed back into the generative design process in order to more rapidly and expansively design explore across complexly coupled objectives. The paper describes the framework and presents the application of this methodology for the design of fabrication aware shell structures in which environmental and structural trade offs drive the final set of design options.

summary Additive manufacturing techniques and materials have evolved rapidly during the last decade. Applications in architecture, engineering and construction are getting more attention as 3D printing is trying to find its place in the industry. Due to high material prices for metal 3d printing and in-homogenous material behaviour in printed plastic, 3D printing has not yet had a very significant impact at the scale of buildings. Limitations on scale, cost, and structural performance have also hindered the advancement of the technology and research up to this point. The research presented here takes a case study for the application of 3D printing at a furniture scale based on a novel custom optimisation approach for structural nodes. Through the concentration of non-standard geometry on the highly complex custom optimised nodes, 3D printers at industrial product scale could be used for the additive manufacture of the structural nodes. This research presents a design strategy with a digital process chain using parametric modeling, virtual prototyping, structural simulation, custom optimisation and additive CAD/CAM for a digital workflow from design to production. Consequently, the digital process chain for the development of structural nodes was closed in a holistic manner at a suitable scale.

summary BIM modelling systems and graph-based modelling systems have been widely used in the architecture design process recently. Based on the systems, an alternative approach to study the influence of perforated façade panels on the indoor illuminance by using a parametric performance analysis in a practical architectural project is proposed. The workflow we developed makes the modelling process faster, more accurate, and easier to modify. From the circulation of modelling-to-analysis process, the performance can be compared, feedback can be generated. Accordingly, optimized design can be concluded. This study suggests an analysis method to evaluate the indoor illuminance performance in the early design stages. The simulation is not a conventional typical in-depth one, but a practical method to immediately evaluate the performance for each design alternative and provide guidelines for design modification. Moreover, the first generation of digital modeling programs allow designers to conceive new forms, and allow these forms to be controled and realized. It reacts to the conference theme by presenting a protocol for a digital workflow in the early stage of the design development.

summary The paper presents research on how Building Information Modelling (BIM) can be applied comprehensively throughout the design of an architectural project. A practical method based on BIM models that help to deal with multidisciplinary issues by integrating the design information from different sources, collaborators and project stages is formulated by adopting existing available tools. The ‘Tiantian Square’ building project in Wuhan, China combines a subway station with a commercial hug. According to the project’s size and complexity, our study focuses on the multiple cooperation of professionals from different backgrounds, including the departments of architectural design, structure (civil engineering), HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning), water supply and drainage, and electrics and sustainable design. Our paper presents how the BIM model bridges between various simulation platforms through our technical system and management, including steps of transformation, simplification, analysis, reaction and improvement. Our research has helped to improve the overall efficiency and quality of the project. We generated a successful analysis-design approach for the initial design stages, which does not require in-depth analysis. It is a practical method to immediately evaluate the performance for each design alternative and provide guidelines for design modification. Finally, we discuss how the coordination of different department becomes a crucial factor as we look forward to a more open, communicative and inter-relational design and development process.

summary There has been significant research into large-scale 3D printing processes with industrial robots. These were initially used to extrude in a layered manner. In recent years, research has aimed to make use of six degrees of freedom instead of three. These so called "spatial extrusion" methods are based on a toolhead, mounted on a robot arm, that extrudes a material along a non horizontal spatial vector. This method is more time efficient but up to now has suffered from a number of limiting geometrical and structural constraints. This limited the formal possibilities to highly repetitive truss-like patterns. This paper presents a generalised approach to spatial extrusion based on the notion of discreteness. It explores how discrete computational design methods offer increased control over the organisation of toolpaths, without compromising design intent while maintaining structural integrity. The research argues that, compared to continuous methods, discrete methods are easier to prototype, compute and manufacture. A discrete approach to spatial printing uses a single toolpath fragment as basic unit for computation. This paper will describe a method based on a voxel space. The voxel contains geometrical information, toolpath fragments, that is subsequently assembled into a continuous, kilometers long path. The path can be designed in response to different criteria, such as structural performance, material behaviour or aesthetics. This approach is similar to the design of meta-materials - synthetic composite materials with a programmed performance that is not found in natural materials. Formal differentiation and structural performance is achieved, not through continuous variation, but through the recombination of discrete toolpath fragments. summary Estimating a building's performance is part of the engineering and architecture discipline. Nowadays, this estimation is done using analysis tools. In many cases, these analysis tools require specialized building models that are simplifications of the actual models. Unfortunately, the adaptations that need to be done to an existing model are tiresome and make the architect less willing to evaluate variations of the building design. Moreover, in the case of buildings with complex shapes, the analyses tend to be less reliable. These problems also occur when algorithmic approaches are used to generate the building design, as the algorithmic script needs to be adapted to satisfy the requirements of the analysis tool, or the manual adaptation of the generated model needs to be repeated each time the script is executed. To solve these issues we propose Algorithmic-Based Analysis. This is a Generative Design method that, utilizing a single algorithmic-based representation of a building, can generate not only the traditional CAD or BIM model, but also specialized models for use in different kinds of analysis.

summary In modern architecture, construction processes are based on top down planning, yet in nature but also in vernacular architecture, the shape of shelters/nests is the result of evolutionary material processes which takes place without any global coordination or plan. This work presents a framework for exploring how self-organizing structures can be achieved in a bottom up fashion by implementing a swarm of simple robots(bristle bots). The robots are used as a hardware platform and operate in a modular 2D arena filled with differently shaped passive building blocks. The robots push around blocks and their behaviour can be programmed mechanically by changing the geometry of their body. Through physical experimentation and video analysis the relationships between the properties of the emergent patterns (size, temporal stability) and the geometry of the robot/parts are studied. This work couples a set of agent based design tools with a robust robotic system and a set of analysis tools for generating and actualising emergent 2D structures.

summary The increasing number of crowd disasters has awakened the need to evaluate the evacuation performance of buildings. However, the information available in building design guidance documents is insufficient to efficiently address safety requirements and official metrics do not take into consideration crucial factors for the success of emergency evacuations, namely the people's dynamics. Although modeling human behavior is not trivial, the recent approach of Agent-Based modeling has been facilitating this task, thus being a suitable tool for evacuation simulations. Nevertheless, the potentialities of this approach are still quite unexplored. Although Agent-Based modeling is already being applied in security analysis tests, its use in combination with Generative Design (GD) is still very limited. In this work, we show how a combination of both approaches improves the safety of buildings.

summary The design as a process is not a new topic in architecture, yet some theories are widely unexplored, such as the multi-stage decision-making (MD) process. This design method provides multiple solutions for one design problem and is characterized by design stages. By adding new building components in every stage, multiple solutions are created for each design solution from the previous stage. If the MD process is to be applied in architectural practice, fundamental and theoretical knowledge about it becomes necessary. This paper investigates the impact of sequence of design stages on the design solutions in the MD process. A basic case study provides the necessary data for comparing different sequences and gaining fundamental knowledge of the MD process. The study contains a parametric model for building generation, a parametric Life Cycle Assessment tool and an optimization mechanism based on Evolutionary Algorithms.

summary This paper outlines a critical approach to computation in architecture by using multi-agent systems and dynamic simulation tools. Such methods reinforce viewing design as a data-driven process, whereby a problem is analysed to a set of agents and their properties. The related actions assume extensive modelling techniques, recursive experimentation and testing to assist design since the early stages until completion. In reflection, similar methods are employed to tackle problems of content other than architecture. The experiment being discussed is Bio-shelters. It involves designing artificial coral reefs to be placed at the Sydney Harbour, aiming to improve the living conditions of seashell and other endangered organisms. This paper first describes reefs as highly sophisticated ecosystems; then, it proposes methods for designing and constructing ones, further commenting onto their shape, fabrication, materiality and on-site placement, consequently reinforcing that extensive modelling techniques currently applicable in architecture may also respond to different scenarios about our settlements and the environment.

summary From the hand-crafted to the highly engineered, braided structures have demonstrated broad versatility across scales, materials, and performance types, leading to their use in a plethora of application domains. Despite this prevalence, braided structures have seen little exploration within a contemporary architectural context. Within the flora robotica project, complex braided structures are a core element of the architectural vision, driving a need for generalized braid design modeling tools that can support fabrication. Due to limited availability of existing suitable tools, this interest motivates the development of a digital toolset for design exploration. In this paper, we present our underlying methods of braid topology representation and physics-based simulation for hollow tubular braids. We contextualize our approach in the literature where existing methods for this class of problem are not directly suited to our application, but offer important foundations. Generally, the tile generation method we employ is an already known approach, but we meaningfully extend it to increase the flexibility and scope of topologies able to be modeled. Our methods support design workflows with both predetermined target geometries and generative, adaptive inputs. This provides a high degree of design agency by supporting real-time exploration and modification of topologies. We address some common physical simulation problems, mainly the overshooting problem and collision detection optimization, for which we develop dynamic simulation constraints. This enables unrolling into realistically straight strips, our key fabrication-oriented contribution. We conclude by outlining further work, specifically the design and realization of physical braids, fabricated robotically or by hand.

summary In an attempt to design shape-morphing multifunctional objects, this thesis uses programmable matter to design self-organizing multi-agent systems capable of morphing from one shape into another. The research looks at various precedents of self-assembly and modular robotics to design and prototype passive agents that could be cheaply mass-produced. Intelligence will be embedded into these agents on a material level, designing different local interactions to perform different global goals. The initial exploratory study looks at various examples from nature like plankton and molecules. Magnetic actuation is chosen as the external actuation force between agents. The research uses simultaneous digital and physical investigations to understand and design the interactions between agents. The project offers a systemic investigation of the effect of shape, interparticle forces, and surface friction on the packing and reconfiguration of granular systems. The ability to change the system state from a gaseous, liquid, then solid state offers new possibilities in the field of material computation, where one can design a "material" and change its properties on demand.

summary In the past, there has been a rapid evolution in computational tools to represent and analyze architectural designs. Analysis tools can be used in all stages of the design process, but they are often only used in the final stages, where it might be too late to impact the design. This is due to the considerable time and effort typically needed to produce the analytical models required by the analysis tools. A possible solution would be to convert the digital architectural models into analytical ones, but unfortunately, this often results in errors and frequently the analytical models need to be built almost from scratch. These issues discourage architects from doing a performance-oriented exploration of their designs in the early stages of a project. To overcome these issues, we propose Algorithmic Design and Analysis, a method for analysis that is based on adapting and extending an algorithmic-based design representation so that the modeling operations can generate the elements of the analytical model containing solely the information required by the analysis tool. Using this method, the same algorithm that produces the digital architectural model can also automatically generate analytical models for different types of analysis. Using the proposed method, there is no information loss and architects do not need additional work to perform the analysis. This encourages architects to explore several design alternatives while taking into account the design’s performance. Moreover, when architects know the set of design variations they wish to analyze beforehand, they can easily automate the analysis process.
