summary Visualisation in architecture often involves a transition between different modelling programs. This is done in order to be able to manually prepare and repair three-dimensional models for visualisations such as renders and VR simulations. In this paper the development of a direct link between a three-dimensional modelling platform and a Virtual Reality (VR) Engine is investigated. This is researched through the generation and manipulation of clean quad mesh topology, UV mapping and UV texture map creation. Through a reiterative process, all possible solutions for improved quad mesh topology for doubly curved surfaces are explored. The resulting clean quad mesh improves the usability of the model and application of textures to accurately simulate a real material. In parallel, the development of a UV unwrapping and UV map creation process was investigated to enhance the texturing process inside the same architectural modelling platform. The overall system was developed as an advanced tool for semi-automating and streamlining the process between modelling and VR simulation. The paper concludes with the limitations of the process and points out to future research to improve speed and quality as well guides to where future testing and experiments should be further investigated and applied.

summary This paper outlines a research project that explores the participation in, and perception of, advanced technologies in architectural professional practice through a sociotechnical lens and presents empirical research findings from an online survey distributed to employees in five large-scale architectural practices in Sydney, Australia. This argues that while the computational design paradigm might be well accepted, understood, and documented in academic research contexts, the extent and ways that computational design thinking and methods are put-into-practice has to date been less explored. In engineering and construction, technology adoption studies since the mid 1990s have measured information technology (IT) use (Howard et al. 1998; Samuelson and Björk 2013). In architecture, research has also focused on quantifying IT use (Cichocka 2017), as well as the examination of specific practices such as building information modelling (BIM) (Cardoso Llach 2017; Herr and Fischer 2017; Son et al. 2015). With the notable exceptions of Daniel Cardoso Llach (2015; 2017) and Yanni Loukissas (2012), few scholars have explored advanced technologies in architectural practice from a sociotechnical perspective. This paper argues that a sociotechnical lens can net valuable insights into advanced technology engagement to inform pedagogical approaches in architectural education as well as strategies for continuing professional development.

summary Current developments in design-to-production workflows aim to allow architects to quickly prototype designs that result from advanced design processes while also embedding the constraints imposed by selected fabrication equipment. However, the enduring physical separation between design space and fabrication space, together with a continuous approach to both design, via NURBs modeling software, and fabrication, through irreversible material processing methods, limit the possibilities to extend the advantages of a “digital” approach (Ward 2010), such as full editability and reversibility, to physical realizations. In response to such issues, this paper proposes a processto allow the concurrent design and fabrication of discrete structures in a collaborative process between human designer and a 6-axis robotic arm. This requires the development of design and materialization procedures for discrete aggregations, including the modeling of assembly constraints, as well as the establishment of a communication platform between human and machine actors. This intends to offer methods to increase the accessibility of discrete design methodologies, as well as to hint at possibilities for overcoming the division between design and manufacturing (Carpo 2011; Bard et al. 2014), thus allowing intuitive design decisions to be integrated directly within assembly processes (Johns 2014).

title Open Source Factory: Democratizing Large-Scale Fabrication Systems

summary Open source frameworks have enabled widespread access to desktop-scale additive manufacturing technology and software, but very few highly hackable large-scale or industrial open source equipment platforms exist. As research trajectories continue to move towards large-scale experimentation and full-scale building construction in robotic and digital fabrication, access to industrial fabrication equipment is critical. Large-scale digital fabrication equipment usually requires extensive start-up investments which becomes a prohibitive factor for open research. Expanding on the idea of the Fab Lab as well as the RepRap movement, the Open Source Factory takes advantage of disciplinary expertise and trans-disciplinary knowledge in construction machine design accumulated over the past decade. With the goal to democratize access to large-scale industrial fabrication equipment, this paper outlines the creation of two full-scale fabrication systems: a RepRap based large-scale 3-axis open source CNC gantry and a 6-axis industrial robot system based on a decommissioned KUKA KR200/2. Both machines offer radically different economic frameworks for implementing research in advanced full scale robotic fabrication into contexts of pedagogy, the research lab, practice, or small scale local building industry. This research demonstrates that such equipment can be implemented by building on the current knowledge base in the field. If industrial robots and other large-scale fabrication tools become accessible for all, the collective sharing of research and the development of new ideas in full-scale robotic building construction can be substantially accelerated.

summary This paper presents the development of a prototype for a new sensing device for anonymously evaluating space utilization, which includes usage factors such as occupancy levels, congregation and circulation patterns. This work builds on existing methods and technology for measuring building performance, human comfort and occupant experience in post-occupancy evaluations as well as pre-design strategic planning. The ability to collect data related to utilization and occupant experience has increased significantly due to the greater accessibility of sensor systems in recent years. As a result, designers are exploring new methods to empirically verify spatial properties that have traditionally been considered more qualitative in nature. With this premise, this study challenges current strategies that rely heavily on manual data collection and survey reports. The proposed sensing device is designed to supplement the traditional manual method with a new layer of automated, unbiased data that is capable of capturing environmental and social qualities of a given space. In a controlled experiment, the authors found that the data collected from the sensing device can be extrapolated to show how layout, spatial interventions or other design factors affect circulation, congregation, productivity, and occupancy in an office setting. In the future, this sensing device could provide designers with real-time feedback about how their designs influence occupants’ experiences, and thus allow the designers to base what are currently intuition-based decisions on reliable data and evidence.

summary City built-form guidelines act as durable constraints on building design decisions. Such guidelines directly impact energy, comfort and other performance conditions. Existing urban design and planning methods only consider a narrow range of potential design scenarios, with rudimentary performance criteria, resulting in suboptimal urban designs. Bibil is a software plugin for the Rhinoceros3D/Grasshopper3D CAD modeler that addresses this gap through the synthesis of design space exploration methods to help design teams optimize guidelines for environmental and energy performance criteria over the life cycle of the city. Bibil consists of three generative and data management modules. The first module simulates development scenarios from street and block information through time, the second designs appropriate architectural typology, and the third abstracts the typologies into a lightweight analysis model for detailed thermal load and energy simulation. State-of-the-art performance simulation is done via the Ladybug Analysis Tools Grasshopper3D plugin, and further bespoke analysis to explore the resulting design space is achieved with custom Python scripts.This paper first introduces relevant background for automated exploration of urban design guidelines. Then the paper surveys the state-of-the-art in design and performance simulation tools in the urban domain. Next the paper describes the beta version of the tool’s three modules and its application in a built form study to assess urban canyon performance in a major North American city. Bibil enables the exploration of a broader range of potential design scenarios, for a broader range of performance criteria, over a longer period of time.

summary Literature suggests that despite the increasing range and variety of computational tools and technologies, they have not really been employed for designing as extensively as it might be. This is due in part to the numerous challenges and impediments limiting their effective usage such as the methodological, procedural, and substantive factors and limitations, and skepticism about their impact of usage on the design process and outcome. The gap in our understanding of how advanced computational tools could support the design activities and design decision-making has expanded considerably to become a new area of inquiry with considerable room for the expansion of knowledge. This research is a single-case study that has been pursued in two phases: literature review and survey followed by analysis and discussion of the empirical results. The empirical observations were compared to the theoretical propositions and with results of similar research to highlight the areas and the extent to what the IT tools' usage have influenced the outcome of the design process. summary Historically, architectural design focused on adaptation of built environment to serve human needs. Recently embedded computation and digital fabrication have advanced means to actuate physical infrastructure in real-time. These 'reactive spaces' have typically explored movement and media as a means to achieve reactivity and physical deformation (Chatting et al. 2017). However, here we recontextualize 'reactive' as finding new mechanisms for permanent and non-deformable everyday materials and environments. In this paper, we describe our ongoing work to create a series of complex forms - modular concrete panels - using thermal, tactile and thermochromic responses controlled by embedded networked system. We create individualized pathways to thermally actuate these surfaces and explore expressive methods to respond to the conditions around these forms - the environment, the systems that support them, their interaction and relationships to human occupants. We outline the design processes to achieve thermally adaptive concrete panels, illustrate interactive scenarios that our system enables, and discuss opportunities for new forms of interactivity within the built environment.

summary Cities are continuously produced through entropic processes that mediate between complex networked systems and the immediacy urban life. Emergent media technologies inform new relationships between information and matter, code and space to redefine new urban ecosystems. Modes of perceiving, experiencing and inhabiting cities are radically changing along with a radical transformation of the tools that we use to design. Cities as complex and systemic organisms require approaches that engage new multi-scalar strategies to connect the physical layer with the system of networked ecologies. This paper aims at investigating emerging and novel forms of reading and producing urban spaces reimagining the physical city through intelligent and mediated processes. Through data agency and responsive urban processes, the design methodology explored the materialization of a temporary pneumatic structure and membrane that tested material performance through fabrication and sensing practices through the pneuSENSE project developed in July 2016 in New York at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during the 'HyperCities' IaaC- Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia - Global Summer School.

summary This paper attempts to reconsider the role of advanced tools and their effective implementation in the field of Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) through the concept of sustainable construction. In parallel, the paper aims to discuss and find common ground for communication between industrial and experimental processes guided by sustainable criteria, an area of investigation that is currently in the forefront of the research work conducted in our robotic construction laboratory. Within this frame, an ongoing work into the design, analysis and automated construction of a timber structure in actual scale is exemplified and used as a pilot study for further discussion. Specifically, the structure consists of superimposed layers of timber elements that are robotically cut and assembled together, formulating the overall structural system. In order to achieve a robust, reliable and economically feasible solution and to control the automated construction process, a multi-objective design optimization process using evolutionary principles is applied. Our purpose is to investigate possibilities for sustainable construction considering minimization of cost and material waste, and in parallel, discussing issues related to the environmental impact and the feasibility of solutions to be realized in actual scale.

summary Various well-established digital modeling software platforms enable architectural design teams to rapidly sculpt and iterate over complex, doubly curved, and organic geometries. However, the software platforms that are used to author such geometries are rarely the same that are used for later-stage project development and delivery. For these phases of project execution, projects of even modest complexity are managed through building information modeling (BIM) software. Yet most BIM solutions are not suitable for natively handling the design of geometrically complex forms, failing to provide lightweight, responsive, or flexible authoring interfaces. A further complication is their inability to readily import or integrate any complex geometric elements or assemblies generated elsewhere. The development of improvements to interoperability between authoring and production software therefore remains an important goal in contemporary architectural practice. This paper describes a practical methodology that then engages various Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and open-source programming tools to address the problem of interoperability for complex geometry in BIM. Specifically, it identifies meshes as a well-positioned data structure for use within the context of preparing complex design geometry for BIM production. We describe a novel technique for the efficient interoperability of complex NURBS poly-surface objects from one authoring platform, employing design meshes that cleanly capture not just geometry, but also user and procedurally derived descriptive data elements for advanced representation and analysis within a BIM production environment.

summary The cultural heritage domain, as many other domains, is invited to experience new "designs" in harmony with new development and consuming approaches. It should accept to deal with under continuous design objects & information on the first hand and the fact that every information consumer could become, somewhere and/or sometime, information broadcaster, on the other hand. In this paper we present some exploratory projects newly realized within the workshop "HyperHeritage" (Augmented Cultural Heritage) of the Master Program Net. This workshop, which is animated by three staff members of the department of digital humanities, invites 15 master program students to rethink the cultural heritage objects and information by considering the potential uses of information and communication technologies and their socio-cultural impacts. By the following, we intend to present four projects on "HyperHeritage" resulting from this collaborative approach. summary The built environment is a complex juxtaposition of static matter and dynamic flows, tangible objects and human experiences, physical realities and digital spaces. This paper offers an alternative understanding of those dichotomies by applying experimental design research strategies that combine objective quantification and subjective perception of urban contexts. The assumption is that layers of measurable datasets can be afforded with personal feedback to reveal "hidden" characteristics of cities. Drawing on studies from data and cognitive sciences, the proposed method allows us to analyze, quantify and visualize the individual experience of the built environment in relation to different urban qualities. By operating in between the scientific domain and the design realm, four design research experiments are presented. Leveraging augmenting and sensing technologies, these studies investigate: (1) urban attractors and user attention, employing eye-tracking technologies during walking; (2) urban proxemics and sensory experience, applying proximity sensors and EEG scanners in varying contexts; (3) urban mood and spatial perception, using mobile applications to merge tangible qualities and subjective feelings; and (4) urban vibe and paced dynamics, combining vibration sensing and observational data for studying city beats. This work demonstrates that, by adopting a multisensory and multidisciplinary approach, it is possible to gain a more human-centered, and perhaps novel understanding of the built environment. A lexicon of experimented urban situations may become a reference for studying different typologies of environments from the user experience, and provide a framework to support creative intuition for the development of more engaging, pleasant, and responsive spaces and places.

summary In 1952 the Italian Olivetti Company opened a study laboratory on electronic calculators in New Canaan, USA; in 1955 it created an electronic research laboratory in Pisa and two years later, co-founded a company to produce electronic conductors. In 1959 it presented ELEA 9003 and in 1965 the P101, respectively the first full transistorized computer and the first desktop computer. This paper aims to investigate how the Olivetti Company accomplished in such a brief period of time a pioneer vision in the field of computing. By one hand it seeks to highlight the forerunner idea of Adriano Olivetti (1901-1960) for an integrated awareness of what computing could become and on the other hand, how that wakefulness fostered an innovative agenda among architects, designers, filmmakers and scientists for the invention of the computer as an artifact expression of an epoch. This successful endeavor anticipated what would become the concept of personal computing. Moreover the paper underlines how the early commercial development of Olivetti and IBM computing flourished in the context of the Universal Exhibitions of Brussels and New York.

summary This paper documents the computational design methods, digital fabrication strategies, and generative design process for [Lumen], winner of MoMA & MoMA PS1’s 2017 Young Architects Program. The project was installed in the courtyard at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, New York, during the summer of 2017. Two lightweight 3D digitally knitted fabric canopy structures composed of responsive tubular and cellular components employ recycled textiles, photo-luminescent and solar active yarns that absorb and store UV energy, change color, and emit light. This environment offers spaces of respite, exchange, and engagement as a 150 x 75-foot misting system responds to visitors’ proximity, activating fabric stalactites that produce a refreshing micro-climate. Families of robotically prototyped and woven recycled spool chairs provide seating throughout the courtyard. summary This paper documents the computational design methods, digital fabrication strategies, and generative design process for Lumen, winner of MoMA & MoMA PS1’s 2017 Young Architects Program. The project was installed in the courtyard at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, New York, during the summer of 2017. Two lightweight 3D digitally knitted fabric canopy structures composed of responsive tubular and cellular components employ recycled textiles, photo-luminescent and solar active yarns that absorb and store UV energy, change color, and emit light. This environment offers spaces of respite, exchange, and engagement as a 150 x 75-foot misting system responds to visitors’ proximity, activating fabric stalactites that produce a refreshing micro-climate. Families of robotically prototyped and woven recycled spool chairs provide seating throughout the courtyard. summary Acoustical design is one of the most challenging aspects of architecture. A complex system of competing influences (e.g., space geometry, size, proportion, material properties, surface detail, etc.) contribute to shaping the quality of the auditory experience. In particular, architectural surfaces affect the way that sound reflections propagate through space. By diffusing the reflected sound energy, surface designs can promote a more homogeneous auditory atmosphere by mitigating sharp and focused reflections. One of the challenges with designing an effective diffuser is the need to respond to a wide band of sound wavelengths, which requires the surface profile to precisely encode a range of detail sizes, depths and angles. Most of the available sound diffusers are designed to respond to a narrow band of frequencies. In this context, fractal-based surface designs can provide a unique opportunity for mitigating such limitations. A key principle of fractal geometry is its multilevel hierarchical order, which enables the same pattern to occur at different scales. This characteristic makes it a potential candidate for diffusing a wider band of sound wavelengths. However, predicting the reflection patterns of complicated fractal-based surface designs can be challenging using available acoustical software. These tools are often costly, complicated and are not designed for predicting early sound propagation paths. This research argues that writing customized algorithms provides a valuable, free and efficient alternative for addressing targeted acoustical design problems. The paper presents a methodology for designing and testing a customized algorithm for predicting sound diffusion patterns of fractal-based surfaces. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were used to develop the code and evaluate the results.

summary Contemporary architecture is considered a dynamic system, capable of adapting to different needs, from environmental to functional ones. The term 'Adaptable Architecture' describes an architecture from which specific components can be changed in relation to external stimuli. This change could be executed by the building system itself, transformed manually or it could be any other ability to be transformed by external forces (Leliveld et al.2017). Adaptability concept is therefore linked to motion and to recent advances in kinetic architecture. In our research we are studying the rules that we can use to design a kinetic architecture using origami. Parametric design allows us to digitally simulate the movement of origami structures, we are testing algorithmic modeling to generate doubly curvature surfaces starting from a designed surface and not from the process. Our main goal is to study the relationship between geometry, motion and shape. We are interested, in particular, in complex surface manufacture using origami technique to design a kinetic and reactive ceiling.

summary Modern design of urban forms is venturing towards performative, site-specific architecture that are formed according to the attributes of its urban context. Parametric modelling techniques offer designers the ability to embed generative mechanisms into the design process to allow performance based design. This paper focuses on the development of a synthesis model that generates an Urban Form schema using computational design principles. The design system illustrates a rule-based systematic approach to urban form generation and is a precursor to the automatic exploration of urban forms based on design analytics and evaluation of urban metrics. The role of the architect begins to shift from the designer of objects to the designer of processes with urban planning following a trajectory of data-generated and contextual specific design.

Nature maximal performance and minimal resources creations are Humanity inspiration that led us to exceed structural, material, mechanisms, tools, systems and methods boundaries (Oxman, 2010).Nature are the Architect of the most reliable and sustainable systems. Looking into Nature's lessons, this paper presents a Nature-based design methodology conducted during Kine[SIS]tem'17 Shading Systems International Summer School, held by the ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, Portugal, between 19th - 30th June 2017. The methodology encompasses two main stages, one before and other during the Summer School. From a pre-definition of context constrains, a nature based design strategy, to a planning of the manufacture and construction still during the phase of development of the design, conducted the Summer School participants through a defined biomimetic process that achieved the construction of 1:1 scale prototype.
