summary This research categorizes the different breathable wall systems designed by students and describes their potential. Also included is a discussion of the results of both the physical analyses and digital simulations of these students' designs. To optimize the environmental performance of each proposed system, this work also engages in a more specific discussion of the advantages and limitations of these designs. Finally, this research concludes with a summary of the evidence of the benefits and risks of employing simulation tools in architecture studios.

summary Clash Detection refers to the identification of geometrical overlaps within a Building Information Model (BIM). This paper seeks to extend the notion of overlapping to activities: Given a construction site within a building, we seek to find clashes between construction activities and occupant routines. Such a situation is often encountered in the context of refurbishments of complex buildings operating 24/7 (e.g. airports, train stations, hospitals, prisons). By finding the influence radii of adverse effects resulting from construction - i.e. dust, noise and vibrations, functions may be temporarily relocated in order to guarantee uninterrupted operation. Our tool CONVIS implements these simulation and scheduling aspects and seeks to provide a digital project plan for refurbishments in the said context.

summary The introduction of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) approach has facilitated the management process of documents produced by different kinds of professionals involved in the design and/or renovation of a building, through identification and subsequent management of geometrical interferences (Clash Detection). The methodology of this research proposes a tool to support Clash Detection, introducing the logical-operative dimension, that may occur with the presence of a construction site within a hospital structure, through the integration of a BIM model within a Game Engine environment, to preserve the continuity of daily hospital activities and trying to reduce negative impacts, times and costs due to construction activities.

summary A new method is proposed to improve diminished reality (DR) simulations to allow the demolition and removal of entire buildings in large-scale spaces. Our research goal was to obtain optical integrity by using a scientific and reliable simulation approach. Further, we tackled presumption of the texture of the background sky by applying deep learning. Our approach extracted the background sky using information from the actual sky obtained from a photographed image. This method comprised two steps: (1) detection of the sky area from the image through image segmentation and (2) creation of an image of the sky through image inpainting. The deep convolutional neural networks developed by us to train and predict images were evaluated to be feasible and effective.

summary This paper uses a Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) device with multiple building materials to provide guidance for developing an autonomous robotics-friendly environment. summary Absence of reliable and accurate surveying of Tibetan architectural heritage has long been a major constraint for architects, architectural historians and archeologists working in that region. Due to distinctive geographical environment and architectural typology, unique surveying technologies are required in Tibet. In the last three years, integrated digital surveying technologies are applied to architectural heritage in Gyantse, a Tibetan city. The aim of the surveying is to document and analyze local architectural heritage for potential technical intervention such as consolidation, restoration and renovation. Key technical issues ranging from reliability of consumer-level UAV to BIM-based platform are presented in the article. The conclusions are that digital technologies greatly improve architectural heritage surveying in Tibet in terms of accuracy, efficiency and versatility. Future works will be addressed in more robust algorithms for points cloud semantic segmentation, change detection of large-scale architectural heritage based on remotely sensed imagery over time, and data exchange and coordination between BIM and GIS, etc.

summary From the hand-crafted to the highly engineered, braided structures have demonstrated broad versatility across scales, materials, and performance types, leading to their use in a plethora of application domains. Despite this prevalence, braided structures have seen little exploration within a contemporary architectural context. Within the flora robotica project, complex braided structures are a core element of the architectural vision, driving a need for generalized braid design modeling tools that can support fabrication. Due to limited availability of existing suitable tools, this interest motivates the development of a digital toolset for design exploration. In this paper, we present our underlying methods of braid topology representation and physics-based simulation for hollow tubular braids. We contextualize our approach in the literature where existing methods for this class of problem are not directly suited to our application, but offer important foundations. Generally, the tile generation method we employ is an already known approach, but we meaningfully extend it to increase the flexibility and scope of topologies able to be modeled. Our methods support design workflows with both predetermined target geometries and generative, adaptive inputs. This provides a high degree of design agency by supporting real-time exploration and modification of topologies. We address some common physical simulation problems, mainly the overshooting problem and collision detection optimization, for which we develop dynamic simulation constraints. This enables unrolling into realistically straight strips, our key fabrication-oriented contribution. We conclude by outlining further work, specifically the design and realization of physical braids, fabricated robotically or by hand.

summary In an attempt to design shape-morphing multifunctional objects, this thesis uses programmable matter to design self-organizing multi-agent systems capable of morphing from one shape into another. The research looks at various precedents of self-assembly and modular robotics to design and prototype passive agents that could be cheaply mass-produced. Intelligence will be embedded into these agents on a material level, designing different local interactions to perform different global goals. The initial exploratory study looks at various examples from nature like plankton and molecules. Magnetic actuation is chosen as the external actuation force between agents. The research uses simultaneous digital and physical investigations to understand and design the interactions between agents. The project offers a systemic investigation of the effect of shape, interparticle forces, and surface friction on the packing and reconfiguration of granular systems. The ability to change the system state from a gaseous, liquid, then solid state offers new possibilities in the field of material computation, where one can design a "material" and change its properties on demand.

summary The construction sector is responsible for a big share of the global energy, resource demand and greenhouse gas emissions. As such, buildings and their designers are key players for carbon mitigation actions. Current research in digital fabrication is beginning to reveal its potential to improve the sustainability of the construction sector. To evaluate the environmental performance of buildings, life cycle assessment (LCA) is commonly employed. Recent research developments have successfully linked LCA to CAD and BIM tools for a faster evaluation of environmental impacts. However, these are only partially applicable to digital fabrication, because of differences in the design process. In contrast to conventional construction, in digital fabrication the geometry is the consequence of the definition of functional, structural and fabrication parameters during design. Therefore, this paper presents an LCA-based method for design-integrated environmental assessment of digitally fabricated building elements. The method is divided into four levels of detail following the degree of available information during the design process. Finally, the method is applied to the case study "Mesh Mould", a digitally fabricated complex concrete wall that does not require any formwork. The results prove the applicability of the method and highlight the environmental benefits digital fabrication can provide.

summary This research explores the development of seamless pneumatically actuated systems whose motion is controlled by the combination of differentially knitted textiles and standardized thin-walled silicone tubing. This work proposes a fundamental material strategy that addresses challenges ranging from soft robotics to pneumatic architecture. Research in soft robotics seeks to achieve complex motions through non-mechanical monolithic systems, comprised of highly articulated shapes molded with a combination of elastic and inelastic materials. Inflatables in architecture focus largely on the active structuring of static forms, as facade systems or as structured envelopes. An emerging use of pneumatic architecture proposes morphable, adaptive systems accomplished through differentiated mechanically interconnected components. In the research described in this paper, a wide array of capabilities in motion and geometric articulation are accomplished through the design of knitted sleeves that generate a series of actuated “elbows.” As opposed to molding silicone bladders, differentiation in motion is generated through the more facile ability of changing stitch structure, and shaping of the knitted textile sleeve, which constrains the standard silicone tubing. The relationship between knit differentiation, pneumatic pressure, and the resultant motion profile is studied initially with individual actuators, and ultimately in propositions for larger seamless assemblies. As opposed to a cellular study of individual components, this research proposes structures with multi-scalar articulation, from fiber and stitch to overall form, composed into seamless, massively deformable architectures.

title Reconnoitring computational potentials of the vault-like forms: Thinking aloud on muqarnas tectonics

summary This study sheds light on a holistic understanding of muqarnas with its historical, philosophical and conceptual backgrounds on one hand and formal, structural and algorithmic principles on the other hand. The vault-like Islamic architectural element, muqarnas, is generally considered to be a non-structural decorative element. Various compositional approaches have been proposed to reveal the inner logic of these complex geometric elements. Each of these approaches uses different techniques such as measuring, unit-based decoding or three-dimensional interpretation of two-dimensional patterns. However, the reflections of the inner logic onto different contexts, such as the usage of different initial geometries, materials or performative concerns, were neglected. In this study, we offer a new schema to approach the performative aspects of muqarnas tectonics. This schema contains new sets of elements, properties and relations deriving partly from previous approaches and partly from the technique of folding. Thus, this study first reviews the previous approaches to analyse the geometric and constructional principles of muqarnas. Second, it explains the proposed scheme through a series of algorithmic form-finding experiments. In these experiments, we question whether ‘fold’, as one of the performative techniques of making three-dimensional forms, contributes to the analysis of muqarnas in both a conceptual and computational sense. We argue that encoding vault-like systems via geometric and algorithmic relations based on the logic of the ‘fold’ provides informative and intuitive feedback for form-finding, specifically in the earlier phases of design. While focusing on the performative potential of a specific fold operation, we introduced the concept of bifurcation to describe the generative characteristics of folding technique and the way of subdividing the form with respect to redistribution of the forces. Thus, in this decoding process, the bifurcated fold explains not only to demystify the formal logic of muqarnas but also to generate new forms without losing contextual conditions.

summary Reciprocal Frame Structures (RF) have broad application potentials. Flexible to using small available materials, they span large areas, including varied curvature and doubly-curved forms. Although not many buildings using RF have been constructed to date, records indicate RF efficiencies where timber was widely used in structures predating modern construction. For reasons of adaptability and economy, advances in computation and fabrication precipitated increase in research into RF structures as a contemporary architectural typology. One can observe that linear timber such as rods and bars feature in extensive RF research. However, interest in planar RF has only recently emerged in research. Hence one can argue that planar RF provides depth to explore new design possibilities. This paper contributes to the growing knowledge of planar RF by presenting a design project that demonstrates an approach in notching systems to explore design and structural performance. The design project, the developed design workflow, fabrication, assembly and evaluation are discussed in this paper.

summary Double skin façade (DSF) is considered one of the best envelope systems in terms of energy efficiency. However, designing an energy efficient DSF system depends on different factors, such as climate, DSF shape and how the air flows in that system. This study presents a methodology to assist design decisions regarding the DSFs shapes. For this purpose, shape grammars was used as a generative design system to generate alternative DSF shape designs. Results of this study can be integrated with an energy simulation tools to calculate the energy demand of each design and consequently design the most efficient DSF system for each context.

summary The design of streets plays an essential role in shaping the quality of our cities. In particular, the design of a street's cross section determines in many aspects the realm of its use, enhancing or reducing its ability for being walkable streets or traffic oriented streets. This paper shows a street cross section design interface where designs are controlled by an ontology and a parametric design system supported by a shape grammar. The ontology provides a semantically ordered vocabulary of shapes, symbols and descriptions upon which the grammar is defined. This paper focuses on the grammar definitions and its translation into a design oriented interface.

summary This paper presents the development of a prototype for a new sensing device for anonymously evaluating space utilization, which includes usage factors such as occupancy levels, congregation and circulation patterns. This work builds on existing methods and technology for measuring building performance, human comfort and occupant experience in post-occupancy evaluations as well as pre-design strategic planning. The ability to collect data related to utilization and occupant experience has increased significantly due to the greater accessibility of sensor systems in recent years. As a result, designers are exploring new methods to empirically verify spatial properties that have traditionally been considered more qualitative in nature. With this premise, this study challenges current strategies that rely heavily on manual data collection and survey reports. The proposed sensing device is designed to supplement the traditional manual method with a new layer of automated, unbiased data that is capable of capturing environmental and social qualities of a given space. In a controlled experiment, the authors found that the data collected from the sensing device can be extrapolated to show how layout, spatial interventions or other design factors affect circulation, congregation, productivity, and occupancy in an office setting. In the future, this sensing device could provide designers with real-time feedback about how their designs influence occupants’ experiences, and thus allow the designers to base what are currently intuition-based decisions on reliable data and evidence.

summary This paper demonstrates the innovative use of game engines as a tool in the analysis and communication of complex structural engineering. It specifically looks at the relationship between a building’s primary structure and its façade. The analysis and visualisations, scripted using the Game Engine Unity3D, focuses on visualising the implications of movements from the primary structure [under various load cases] on the façade. This paper describes the novel process by which Unity3D is utilised to create an applet which imports displacements from structural software and post-processes the data to visualise the complex effect on façade panels according to its support conditions. It demonstrates that visualising facade movements in real-time, as opposed to current, static report-based descriptions, provide access for the comprehension of more complex building systems. This therefore has the possibility to reduce safety factors applied to facade movement joints.

summary In this research, the authors discuss multiple design process criteria, fabrication methods, and assembly workflows for covering spaces using discrete pieces of material shorter than the space's span, otherwise known as topologically interlocking structures. To expand this line of research, the study challenges the interplay of geometric relationships in the assembly of unreinforced and mortar-less structures that work purely under compressive forces. This work opens with a review of studies concerning topological interlocking, a unique type of material and structural system. Then, through a description of two design projects - an interlocking footbridge and a vaulted structure - the authors demonstrate how they encouraged students to engage in a systematic exploration of the generative relationships among surface geometry, the configuration and formal variations of its subdividing cells, and the stability of the final interlocking assembly. In this fashion, the authors argue that there is hope for carrying the design criteria of topological interlocking systems into the production of precast concrete structures.

summary Digital fabrication has transformed the way buildings are constructed by applying methods such as friction-fit connection. This technique has been propagated by WikiHouse which aims to develop open building technologies to different environmental contexts. However, the indiscriminate use of the model may result in inefficiency of housing performance. This work, therefore, investigates solutions for adapting WikiHouses to the tropics, according to principles proposed by Armando de Holanda in ‘A Guide to Build in Northeast Brazil’. Nevertheless, difficulties related to certain adaptations were observed such as connections compatibility and design of large open spaces, especially because these systems depend on a maximum size of parts.
