summary GrowMorph is an ongoing research project that addresses the logic of bacterial cellular growth and its potential uses in architecture and design. While natural forms have always been an inspiration for human creativity, contemporary technology and scientific knowledge can allow us to advance the principle of biomimesis in striking new directions. By examining various patterns of bacterial growth, including their parametric logic, their use of responsive membranes and scaffolding structures, and their environmental fitness, this research creates new algorithmic design and construction models that can be applied through digital fabrication. Based on data from confocal microscopy, simulations were created using programming language Processing to model the environmental responses and morphology of the bacteria's growth. To demonstrate the utility of the results, the simulations created in this research were used to design an organically shaped pavilion and to suggest a new digital knitting process for material construction. The results from the study can inspire designers to make use of bacterial growth logic in their work, and provide them with practical tools for this purpose. Potential applications include novel designs for responsive surfaces, new fabrication processes, and unique spatial structures in future architectural work.

summary Physarum Polycephalum is a widespread eukaryotic microbe capable of producing effective networks between food particles to solve spatial planning problems. This paper investigates a previous algorithm for simulating Physarum Polycephalum. An open-source tool named Physarealm is developed for simulation in Rhino's graphical algorithm editor, Grasshopper. The tool adopts a previous stigmergic multi-agent algorithm for simulation and expands its boundary into three dimensions. In addition, this tool adds some custom rules, thus giving the designer more creative control over the produced results. Two research projects have applied this tool in the design process. The first project mainly takes advantage of the tool's path-planning ability, while the second one utilizes its aesthetic values, demonstrating the potential of the tool for further applications.

summary Abstract: This paper searches for an alternative design method of integrating traditional material craft and computational design. It begins by analyzing Chinese philosophical view of nature, and proposes a natural design built method. The paper demonstrates the idea with two bamboo structure projects. In China, bamboo is closely linked to culture values and traditional craftsmanship. The projects research on the formation logic of bamboo system, and employs computational design method to activate the system formation. The projects strive to investigate computational design with unique eastern characteristics, to find out how it can help to reinvent its traditional values, and to search for a unification of formation logic and material sensibility.

summary The use of digital design and fabrication technology for the integration of joints into timber plate structures has been the subject of recent research in the field of architectural geometry. While most of research has been focused on joint geometries, assembly sequences, and the fabrication of smaller prototypes, there have been few implementations in buildings. This paper illustrates the challenges for such a process and offers our solutions for implementing it at a building scale through the example of a theater hall built from cross-laminated timber plates. The building achieves its column-free span of 20 meters with a plate thickness of only 45 mm through a form-active lightweight structure system. It combines prismatic and antiprismatic folded surfaces and a double-layered cross-section with integrated thermal insulation.

summary Algorithmic design allows architects to design using a programming-based approach. Current algorithmic design environments are based on existing computer-aided design applications or building information modeling applications, such as AutoCAD, Rhinoceros 3D, or Revit, which, due to their complexity, fail to give architects the immediate feedback they need to explore algorithmic design. In addition, they do not address the current trend of moving applications to the cloud to improve their availability. To address these problems, we propose a software architecture for an algorithmic design integrated development environment (IDE), based on web technologies, that is more interactive than competing algorithmic design IDEs. Besides providing an intuitive editing interface which facilitates programming tasks for architects, its performance can be an order of magnitude faster than current algorithmic design IDEs, thus supporting real-time feedback with more complex algorithmic design programs. Moreover, our solution also allows architects to export the generated model to their preferred computer-aided design applications. This results in an algorithmic design environment that is accessible from any computer, while offering an interactive editing environment that integrates into the architect’s workflow.

summary This work is the outcome of a multidisciplinary collaboration in the context of the VidiaLab (Laboratorio de Visualización Digital Avanzada). It proposes an application of interactive video mapping techniques as a form of experiencing the Fray Bentos industrial landscape, declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2015. An immersive environment was created by enriching a physical scale model of the site with projected digital images and information, providing new and attractive ways of interaction with the cultural heritage. Proposals for future work and educational applications of the developed tools are also discussed.

summary A great amount of information needs to be managed along the building life cycle in order to fulfil building codes, standards and regulations, client and user requirements. However, a lack of transparency in the information management and a lack of communication between stakeholders often bring to the adoption of solutions in the design process that do not meet the original requirements. Therefore, an ordered structure for information improves its storage, enhancing its visibility, traceability, usability and re-usability. In addition, for public works contracts and design contests, the use of specific electronic tools, such as building information electronic modelling tools, is often required for the information management. The paper presents the efforts devoted within the Italian building sector for proposing a standardized structure and developing tools for collecting, sharing and exchanging information between stakeholders involved in different stages of the building process. An enhanced use of information relying on the adoption of the standardized structure of information is presented, proposing dedicated applications for automating the process of information fruition.

summary The presented process enables users to design, fabricate and assemble spatial lattices comprised of linear stock materials such as round section timber, aluminum or acrylic dowels and complex 3D printed joints. The motivation for the development of this application is informed by the incredible availability of low cost 3D printers which enable anyone to produce small scale artifacts; deploying rapid prototyping to achieve larger scale artifacts than the machine's effective work envelope is a challenge for additive manufacturing; and the trend in the design computing world away highly technical specialized software towards general public applications.

summary The understanding of space relies on motion, as we experience space by crossing it in time, space’s fourth dimension. However, architects lack the necessary tools to incorporate people's motion into their design of space. As a consequence, architects fail to connect space with the motion of the people that inhabit their buildings, creating disorienting environments. Further, what if augmentation technology changes how we inhabit space and the static built environment does not fit people anymore? This paper explores the problem of developing a model from people's motion, to inform and augment the architecture design process in the early stages. As an outcome, I have designed a model based on data from human-space interaction obtained through field work. First, relevant behavior was identified and recorded. Second, a metric was extracted from the data and composed by speed, the 4th D dimension as time, and gestures. Third, the original behavior was rebuilt, producing a set of rules. The rules were combined to form the model of human-space interaction. This generalizable model provides a novel approach to designing space based on data from people. Moreover, this paper presents a means of incorporating inhabitants' behavior into digital design. Finally, the model contributes to the advancement of people's motion research for general applications, such as in transport engineering, robotics, and cognitive sciences.

summary Additive manufacturing techniques and materials have evolved rapidly during the last decade. Applications in architecture, engineering and construction are getting more attention as 3D printing is trying to find its place in the industry. Due to high material prices for metal 3d printing and in-homogenous material behaviour in printed plastic, 3D printing has not yet had a very significant impact at the scale of buildings. Limitations on scale, cost, and structural performance have also hindered the advancement of the technology and research up to this point. The research presented here takes a case study for the application of 3D printing at a furniture scale based on a novel custom optimisation approach for structural nodes. Through the concentration of non-standard geometry on the highly complex custom optimised nodes, 3D printers at industrial product scale could be used for the additive manufacture of the structural nodes. This research presents a design strategy with a digital process chain using parametric modeling, virtual prototyping, structural simulation, custom optimisation and additive CAD/CAM for a digital workflow from design to production. Consequently, the digital process chain for the development of structural nodes was closed in a holistic manner at a suitable scale.

summary Architecture is a discipline with a long history of engagement with representational techniques borrowed from artforms such as painting and drawing. Historically, these techniques enable artists to translate three-dimensional space into a two-dimensional medium, while architecture tends to work in reverse, using the latter to express yet-to-be-realized projects in the former. This investigation leads to specific methods of linear perspectival representation that manipulate our perception of spatial depth, such as trompe l’oeil and anamorphic projection. Referencing these methods, we introduce the concept of an optically illusive architecture. While referencing a wide range of visually deceptive effects, we focus on synthesizing two-dimensional patterns into three-dimensional objects for the purpose of producing a depthless reading of three-dimensional space. In this paper, we outline optically illusive architecture and look at the initial stages of a design experiment that attempts to bring the perception of flatness into a three-dimensional object. This is achieved by building a simple algorithm that reverses linear perspectival projection to produce two-dimensional effects through a three-dimensional physical object. We analyze the results by comparing the two- and three-dimensional projections against one another from varying points of view in space, and speculate on the possible applications for such a design.

summary In continuation of our previous research (Hussein, et al., 2017), this paper examines the kinetic transformable spatial-bar structures that can alter their forms from any free-form geometry to another, which can be named as Free-form transformable structures (FFTS). Since 1994, some precedents have been proposed FFTS for many applications such as controlling solar gain, providing interactive kinetic forms, and control the users' movement within architectural/urban spaces. This research includes a comparative analysis and a critical review of eight FFTS precedents, which revealed some design and technical considerations, issues, and design and evaluation challenges due to the FFTS ability to deliver infinite unpredictable form variations. Additionally, this research presents our novel algorithmic framework to design and evaluate the infinite form variations of FFTS and an actuated prototype that achieved the required movement. The findings of this study revealed some significant design and technical challenges and limitations that require further research work.

summary The imperative need for complex geometries in architecture is driving innovation towards an unconstrained fabrication freedom in building components. Fabrication constraints are a critical obstacle when material efficiency through complex, optimized topologies is sought. To address this constraint, this research investigates the use of 3D printed plastic formwork for fibre reinforced concrete at large scale. This novel construction method makes complex topologies and precise details possible for full-scale, load bearing structures. To demonstrate its potential applications, SkelETHon —a functional four-meter-long concrete canoe— was designed, built and raced in a regatta on the Rhine river (Figure 1).

summary Growing number of Building Information Modeling (BIM) applications have supported the automated assessment of building design and its quality in the early phase of design. For increasing the accuracy and fineness of assessment, rule interpretations require logical base and standardization of analysis process. Therefore, some government-funded research projects have focused on this rule-making process separated from the rule-checking process. Specifically, KBimLogic is a logic rule-based mechanism designed for the building permit related rules in Korea Building Act sentences. As a com-puter-readable definition of a rule, KBimCode has been developed to be executed in actual rule-checking software. The limitation of such code is the visibility to the rule experts who are usually non- or novice programmers. This paper describes much intuitive way of defining and generating KBimCode through KBim Visual Language. User can easily query the building element and method through the immanent connection with KBimLogic database. By using the KBim Visual Language, various types of rules written in design guideline, international standardization, and national acts can be easily interpreted into computer-readable formats such as KBimCode in order to proceed with the automated rule-checking.

summary Due to the irregular and variable environments in which most construction projects take place, the topic of on-site automation has previously been largely neglected in favor of off-site prefabrication. While prefabrication has certain obvious economic and schedule benefits, a number of potential applications would benefit from a fully autonomous robotic construction system capable of building without human supervision or intervention; for example, building in remote environments, or building structures whose form changes over time. Previous work using a swarm approach to robotic assembly generally neglected to consider forces acting on the structure, which is necessary to guarantee against failure during construction. In this paper we report on key findings for how distributed climbing robots can use local force measurements to assess aspects of global structural state. We then chart out a broader trajectory for the affordances of distributed on-site construction in the built environment and position our contributions within this research agenda. The principles explored in simulation are demonstrated in hardware, including solutions for force-sensing as well as a climbing robot.

summary This article aims at describing the creation process of an Augmented Reality (AR) application as a mean of expression: from production to exhibition. This study describes the development of an AR application presented at Expo SIGraDi 3D/20. A Moai miniature was scanned through digital photogrammetry techniques for acquisition of its shape and dimensions. The 3D model was generated and optimized to be viewed in AR. The process is replicable and provides an advance on documentation and development in AR applications based on digital photogrammetry.

summary This paper presents strategies for the creation of large-scale transformable structures. In particular we work to leverage material properties and novel construction techniques to induce transformation. We employ flexible biaxial braided geometries to create interconnected large-scale textile surfaces. These braided networks distribute load forces via their internal friction, allowing for uniform structural transformation without the need for complicated mechanical linkages or electromechanical actuation. The ultimate range of these structures has been simulated with computational tools and correlated with physical load testing. We present various applications and configurations of these transforming structures that demonstrate their utility and a new attitude toward the creation of lightweight morphable structures.

title Reconnoitring computational potentials of the vault-like forms: Thinking aloud on muqarnas tectonics

summary This study sheds light on a holistic understanding of muqarnas with its historical, philosophical and conceptual backgrounds on one hand and formal, structural and algorithmic principles on the other hand. The vault-like Islamic architectural element, muqarnas, is generally considered to be a non-structural decorative element. Various compositional approaches have been proposed to reveal the inner logic of these complex geometric elements. Each of these approaches uses different techniques such as measuring, unit-based decoding or three-dimensional interpretation of two-dimensional patterns. However, the reflections of the inner logic onto different contexts, such as the usage of different initial geometries, materials or performative concerns, were neglected. In this study, we offer a new schema to approach the performative aspects of muqarnas tectonics. This schema contains new sets of elements, properties and relations deriving partly from previous approaches and partly from the technique of folding. Thus, this study first reviews the previous approaches to analyse the geometric and constructional principles of muqarnas. Second, it explains the proposed scheme through a series of algorithmic form-finding experiments. In these experiments, we question whether ‘fold’, as one of the performative techniques of making three-dimensional forms, contributes to the analysis of muqarnas in both a conceptual and computational sense. We argue that encoding vault-like systems via geometric and algorithmic relations based on the logic of the ‘fold’ provides informative and intuitive feedback for form-finding, specifically in the earlier phases of design. While focusing on the performative potential of a specific fold operation, we introduced the concept of bifurcation to describe the generative characteristics of folding technique and the way of subdividing the form with respect to redistribution of the forces. Thus, in this decoding process, the bifurcated fold explains not only to demystify the formal logic of muqarnas but also to generate new forms without losing contextual conditions.

title Lumifoil and Tschumi: Virtual projections and architectural interventions

summary This article introduces the theoretical and technical framework for the design of a temporary rooftop canopy on the red generator—one of the buildings designed by Bernard Tschumi for the Florida International University School of Architecture. The project, Lumifoil, was designed using both top-down and bottom-up computational techniques, including surface modeling via projected geometries and scripted cellular subdivisions and assemblies. Lumifoil attempts to synthesize these two often-conflicting design approaches into a generative design process which leverages context, form, surface, and structure as affective and effective actors. Lumifoil is the result of a design methodology which is both active and reactive to existing conditions of the site and new opportunities afforded by the program. It is contextual in its top-down relationship to Tschumi’s existing building and theory, generative in how details emerge bottom-up through scripts which lack any reference to site, and emergent in the resulting synthetic processes and effects which are produced. Through this methodological development, the project both tracks and responds to popular architectural theory and design from the mid-1990s to today. The theoretical underpinnings of the project build upon the idea that the actual (the real-life physical manifestation of matter) and the virtual (the potential for an object to be) are two constantly shifting paradigms in which design processes can intervene to help develop an architectural solution from a range of possibilities. The technical aspect of the project includes the collaborative workflow between the architecture offices of OTA+ and studio MODO with Arup Engineers to resolve structural issues using parametric modeling tools and structural analysis software. The final project is entirely parametric and fabrication is completely automated.
