summary New technologies and uncontrolled open-data policies lead public to a new way of approaching the built environment. To enlarge the competences of the professionals that work within the cities, we believe that providing a deep and dynamic knowledge on the heritage and urban built environment is the more effective solution to offer a unique support to the needs. By providing a boosted geographical database with detailed information about the status of each building, we aim to support the professional by providing a neat vision about vacant buildings available citywide. We think this knowledge is an important asset in covering every kind of public requests: from flat to rent to an abandoned building to restore or to drive better investors. The city of Trento will be the pilot project to test these statements.We studied the phenomenon of pushing new constructions rather investing on the reuse of abandoned buildings with the consequences of unsustainable land use. To address the work we adopted a comprehensive approach across the fields of urbanism, ICT engineering and social sciences. We believe that sharing knowledge and know-hows with municipalities, agencies, and citizens is the way to support better market strategies as well as urban transformation policies.

keywords The paper discusses co-design, development, production, application of TreeHugger (see Figure 1). The co-design among community and trans-disciplinary participants with different expertise required scope of media mix, switching between analogue, digital and back again. This involves different degrees of physical and digital 'GIGA-Mapping' (Sevaldson, 2011, 2015), 'Grasshopper3d' (Davidson, 2017) scripting and mix of digital and analogue fabrication to address the real life world. The critical participation of this 'Time-Based Design' (Sevaldson, 2004, 2005) process is the interaction of the prototype with eco-systemic agency of the adjacent environment - the eco-systemic performance. The TreeHugger is a responsive solid wood insect hotel, generating habitats and edible landscaping (Creasy, 2004) on bio-tope in city centre of Prague. To extend the impact, the code was uploaded for communities to download, local-specifically edit and apply worldwide. Thus, the fusion of discussed processes is multi-scaled and multi-layered, utilised in emerging design field: Systemic Approach to Architectural Performance.

summary In emerging countries there is a need for rapid urban planning, since they are confronted by unprecedented wave of urbanization. This need is even bigger since usually there is no adequate number of professional educated urban planners in these countries. Therefore, we investigate in this paper how to develop a set of methods that allow to generate urban fabric semi-automatically. The challenge is to come up with a generative planning model that adapts to multiple boundary conditions.Through a modular design strategy generative methods are applied by students in an urban design studio in order to combine them into more complex planning strategies for small cities in the emerging country of Ethiopia. The modular approach allows to break down planning into sub-issues to better deal with the overarching problem. For testing the implemented generative urban design strategies various cities are generated at different locations in Ethiopia with various topographic situations. Their underlying design strategies and modular approach are discussed in this paper.

summary Design tools like Grasshopper are often used to either generate novel forms, to automate certain design processes or to incorporate scientific factors. However, any Grasshopper definition has certain assumptions about design and space built into it from its earliest genesis, when the initial algorithm is set out. Correspondingly, implicit theoretical positions are built into definitions, and therefore its results. Approaching parametric design as a question of architectural, landscape architectural or urban design theory allows the breaking down of traditional boundaries between the technical and the historical or theoretical, and the way parametric design, and urban design history & theory, can be conveyed in the teaching environment. Once the boundaries between software and history & theory are transgressed, Grasshopper can be a way of testing the principles embedded in historical designs and thus these two disciplines can be joined. In urban design, there is an inherent clash between an ideal model and existing urban geography or morphology, and also between formal (qualitative) and numerical (quantitative) aspects. If a model provides a necessary vision for future development, an existing topography then results from the continuous human and natural modifications of a territory. To explore this hypothesis, the “Urban Design Representation” subject in the Master of Urban Design program at the University of Cape Town taught in 2017 & 2018 was approached “parametrically” from these two opposite, albeit convergent, starting points: the conceptual/rational versus the physical/empiric representations of a territory. In this framework, Grasshopper was used to represent typical standards and parameters of modern urban planning (for example, Floor/Area Ratio, height and distance between buildings, site coverage, etc), and a typological approach was adopted to study and “decode” the relationship between public and private space, between the street, the block and topography, between solids and voids. This methodology permits a cross-comparison of different urban design models and the immediate evaluation of their formal outputs derived from parametric data.

summary Computational visual simulations are extremely useful and powerful tools for decision-making. The use of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) has become a common phenomenon due to real-time and interactive visual simulation tools in architectural and urban design studies and presentations. In this study, a demonstration is performed to integrate Structure from Motion (SfM) into VR and AR. A 3D modeling method is explored by SfM under realtime rendering as a solution for the modeling cost in large-scale VR. The study examines the application of camera parameters of SfM to realize an appropriate registration and tracking accuracy in marker-less AR to visualize full-scale design projects on a planned construction site. The proposed approach is applied to plural real architectural and urban design projects, and results indicate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

summary Form-Based Codes are legal regulations adopted by local government that allow specific urban forms to be achieved. Such codes have a significant impact on the performative potential of the urban environment. This paper explores the possibility of using a neuroevolution algorithm to elucidate the complex relationship between Form-based Codes and their performative potential. More specifically, Compositional Pattern Producing Networks (CPPN) are used to generate parameter fields, which then drive the generation of varied urban models. For evolving the CPPN networks, a neuroevolution algorithm is used, called Neuroevolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT). In order to test the feasibility of the proposed approach, an abstract experiment is described in which a population of urban models are evolved, optimising a set of performance criteria related to the vista and location of the residential units.

summary Security planning is a vital part of the operation and management phase in a building’s life cycle. Ideally, this will be addressed during the building design phase. However, reality often differs from this ideal. In the real world, information such as floor plans tend to insufficiently describe or imperfectly match physical buildings, and must be surveyed and re-worked during security planning. Because of this, security companies require two kinds of staff: those in the security business and those in charge of planning, including floor plan verification. This research focused on creating an efficient way to help staff in this work environment develop a system of security planning for buildings and facilities using a rule-based approach in a tailormade CAD system. In this research, we developed a new 3D CAD system for desktops and mobile devices, which specializes in security planning using a game-engine. To avoid errors during security planning, a rule-based check system was developed and integrated into the CAD system. The rule-set of this rule base was built from the security planning manual, including guidelines on equipment layout and wiring in various situations, which could then be used in the development of an automated check. This research describes the method of system development and final results.

summary Achieving energy efficient urban planning requires a multi-disciplinary planning approach. The huge increase in data from sensors and simulations does not help to reduce the burden of planners. On the contrary, unfamiliar multi-disciplinary data sets can bring planners into a hopeless tangle. This paper applies semi-supervised learning methods to address such planning data issues. A case study is used to demonstrate the proposed method with respect to three performance issues: solar heat gains, natural ventilation and daylight. The result shows that the method addressing both familiar and unfamiliar data has the ability to guide the planner during the planning process.

summary Participatory planning aims at engaging multiple stakeholders including citizens in various stages of planning projects. Adopting participatory design approach in the early stage of planning project facilitates the ideation process of citizens. We have implemented a participatory design study during the 2017 Beijing Design Week and have conducted an interactive design project called "Design your perfect Dashilar: You Place it!". Participants including local residents and visitors were asked to redesign the Yangmeizhu street, a historical street located in Dashilar area by rearranging the buildings of residential, commercial, administration, and cultural functionalities. Apart from using digital design tools, questionnaires, interviews, and sensor network were applied to collect personal preferences data. Computational approaches were used to extract features from designs and personal preferences. In this paper, we illustrate the implementation of the participatory design and the possible applications by combining with crowdsourcing. Participatory design data and citizens profiles with personal preferences were analysed and their correlations were computed. By using crowdsourcing and participatory design, this study shows that the digitalization of participatory design with data science perspective can indicate the implicit requirements, needs and design ideas of citizens.

summary This paper presents design research speculating on new planning approaches for informal urban sites that enables coordinated planning to operate within the realm of spontaneous, bottom-up redevelopment. In opposition to the /tabula rasa/ Modernist development, this project reacts to the dynamic metabolism of the village and engages with the rapid turnover of the built environment of the village as a mechanism through which to implement incremental redevelopment. A radical reorientation of the object of masterplanning, this replaces the singular image or document as the guiding authority with a collection of opportunistic adaptations, temporal sequences, and localized procedures. Enabling this approach is a computational approach that analyzes the morphology of the public space network to identify opportunities to address issues in the composition of the village. A multiagent system driven by weighted random walks through the circulation network conducts local analyses of the urban fabric while changes are made and proposes potential modifications to discrete areas. The model simulates the potential for such a planning tool to be used over a long time span and updated with empirically gathered data, having the benefit of flexibility and resilience in the face of the changing and unregulated conditions in the context of informal urbanism.

summary In the last decades, urban design has been influenced by its relationship with landscape. This has led to a new approach formalised and called Landscape Urbanism. Defining specific reading and analysis instruments together with proper design methods, capable of a transdisciplinary dialogue with geography, plant and biological world's languages, landscape urbanism can undoubtedly obtain more performing purposes than the ones achieved by traditional urban planning. Moreover, new digital tools are appearing, providing urbanism with new instruments for an advanced and interactive way to design cities in close relationship with landscape. The process starts with the acquisition of large quantity of data, like georeferenced maps in conjunction with relevant information about the territory, such as traffic and atmospheric pollution data, important buildings and monuments or significant landscape elements (rivers, mountains, etc.). All this information is combined onto multiple layers in order to be used by different design algorithms, connected by multi-dimensional arrays, whose reciprocal relations are dynamically controlled by architects and engineers. We will present here the case study of an ecological and regenerative infrastructure for the city of Bergamo designed on the basis of these principles, using a convenient combination of parametric tools.

summary Evidence based urban design and planning support benefits from providing designers with multi-source, multi-scale and multi-time information, which is both 'big' and 'small', and quantitative and qualitative. We are developing a platform, namely Informed Design Platform, that adopts a (big) data driven approach to derive insights and principles in order to adaptively design or re-design various forms of urban public spaces based on usage patterns and perceptions of the public. This platform is designed using a four step methodology of data collection, integration, analysis, and visualization. Multi-source data is integrated based on three analysis dimensions: place, time and people; and four analysis pillars: utilization, activity, opinion and sensing. This paper describes the aims, the design principles, and partial results of development of this platform.

summary This paper discusses parametricism in regards to urban planning and infrastructure. The objective is to bridge GIS data (using FLUX) and the parametric design process together into urban master planning. Creating a tool which generates the infrastructure and grid system automatically using specified manual user inputs, allowing for further generation of 3D forms from the block patterns. It also critically analyses the traditional master planning approach of grid system division in regards to topography, and how classical urban designers did not consider topographical constraints when a square grid system was employed to structure a city. The analysis of existing parametric master plans will also show that data driven planning has not put topography as a significant hierarchical. Through case studies using the developed tool, a clearer understanding of how topography can shape infrastructure can be understood. The analysis of topography is the main driving data iteration point which generates the infrastructure, grid, and division systems.

summary The densification of urban spaces is a major challenge for future cities. With new forms of online consultation, we observe a movement towards open government in urban planning. A stronger participation between a more diverse body of players in a networked environment, is unveiling various discrepancies in the understanding of projects by the different actors in planning, due to access to and the comprehension of planning information. To recognise and utilise the associated capabilities of current transformations, communication between the actors in planning and their sharing of knowledge is vitally important. Information visualisation is an essential form of communication, prompting this explorative paper in considering elements specific to games visualisation and their implications for urban planning. Based on a framework for information visualisation in games it was found that the specifications for actor groups in planning processes mirror the specifications specific to target audience groups in games.

summary The utilization of visual programming languages (VPL) as tools for generating complex simulations has seen a constant increase in application in architect planning phases. The major advantage of such languages is, that they enable the user to create programs without needing traditional software development skills. In the last few years the CDP // Collaborative Design Platform was developed that seamlessly connects physical models with analyses and simulations in real-time. To facilitate an easier creation, modification and user interaction with the individual simulations, a VPL and an accompanying IDE were conceptualized and developed. In the context of this paper the core requirements, the concept and prototypical implementation of these new components are described in detail.

summary City built-form guidelines act as durable constraints on building design decisions. Such guidelines directly impact energy, comfort and other performance conditions. Existing urban design and planning methods only consider a narrow range of potential design scenarios, with rudimentary performance criteria, resulting in suboptimal urban designs. Bibil is a software plugin for the Rhinoceros3D/Grasshopper3D CAD modeler that addresses this gap through the synthesis of design space exploration methods to help design teams optimize guidelines for environmental and energy performance criteria over the life cycle of the city. Bibil consists of three generative and data management modules. The first module simulates development scenarios from street and block information through time, the second designs appropriate architectural typology, and the third abstracts the typologies into a lightweight analysis model for detailed thermal load and energy simulation. State-of-the-art performance simulation is done via the Ladybug Analysis Tools Grasshopper3D plugin, and further bespoke analysis to explore the resulting design space is achieved with custom Python scripts.This paper first introduces relevant background for automated exploration of urban design guidelines. Then the paper surveys the state-of-the-art in design and performance simulation tools in the urban domain. Next the paper describes the beta version of the tool’s three modules and its application in a built form study to assess urban canyon performance in a major North American city. summary Sky view factor (SVF) is a well-known parameter in urban-climatic studies, but there is a lack of consensus on its effectiveness, especially with regard to the interpretation of changes in urban air temperatures. This led the authors to develop the new concept of the partial sky view factor (SVFp), which showed promise in a previous study. The objective of this study is to save the time associated with manual methods of calculating SVF and SVFp by developing a Rhino-Grasshopper component to quantify them via the hemispheric projection of a 3D model. In addition, a different approach, in terms of a hemispheric projection to calculate SVF, will be introduced by another component, and the pros and cons of each approach are considered. We will name these methods 'Ray Method' and 'Geometrical Method' respectively. The Ray Method has achieved a good balance between accuracy, processing time and urban scale and complexity compared to the Geometrical Method.

title Augmented Urban Experiences: Technologically Enhanced Design Research Methods for Revealing Hidden Qualities of the Built Environment

summary The built environment is a complex juxtaposition of static matter and dynamic flows, tangible objects and human experiences, physical realities and digital spaces. This paper offers an alternative understanding of those dichotomies by applying experimental design research strategies that combine objective quantification and subjective perception of urban contexts. The assumption is that layers of measurable datasets can be afforded with personal feedback to reveal "hidden" characteristics of cities. Drawing on studies from data and cognitive sciences, the proposed method allows us to analyze, quantify and visualize the individual experience of the built environment in relation to different urban qualities. By operating in between the scientific domain and the design realm, four design research experiments are presented. Leveraging augmenting and sensing technologies, these studies investigate: (1) urban attractors and user attention, employing eye-tracking technologies during walking; (2) urban proxemics and sensory experience, applying proximity sensors and EEG scanners in varying contexts; (3) urban mood and spatial perception, using mobile applications to merge tangible qualities and subjective feelings; and (4) urban vibe and paced dynamics, combining vibration sensing and observational data for studying city beats. This work demonstrates that, by adopting a multisensory and multidisciplinary approach, it is possible to gain a more human-centered, and perhaps novel understanding of the built environment. A lexicon of experimented urban situations may become a reference for studying different typologies of environments from the user experience, and provide a framework to support creative intuition for the development of more engaging, pleasant, and responsive spaces and places.

summary Reciprocal Frame Structures (RF) have broad application potentials. Flexible to using small available materials, they span large areas, including varied curvature and doubly-curved forms. Although not many buildings using RF have been constructed to date, records indicate RF efficiencies where timber was widely used in structures predating modern construction. For reasons of adaptability and economy, advances in computation and fabrication precipitated increase in research into RF structures as a contemporary architectural typology. One can observe that linear timber such as rods and bars feature in extensive RF research. However, interest in planar RF has only recently emerged in research. Hence one can argue that planar RF provides depth to explore new design possibilities. This paper contributes to the growing knowledge of planar RF by presenting a design project that demonstrates an approach in notching systems to explore design and structural performance. The design project, the developed design workflow, fabrication, assembly and evaluation are discussed in this paper.

summary The paper introduces the methodology related to the topic of citizen-driven urban design and revises the idea of on-site participation of end-users, which could prospectively lead to customisation of architectural and urban space in a full-scale. The research in the first phase addresses the engagement of information technologies used for idea sketching in participatory design workshop related to local urban issues in the city of Chur in Switzerland by means of the Skity tool, the sketching on-line platform running on all devices. Skity allows user, which can be individual citizens or a community, to sketch, build, and adapt their ideas for the improvement of an urban locality. The participant is the expert of the locality because he or she lives in this place every day. The content of this paper is focused on the participatory design research project conducted as a study at the ETH Zürich and the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft HTW in Chur in collaboration with Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore, mainly concentrated on the first step of the methodological approach introduced here.
