summary How do we know what we are looking at while viewing inside Building Information Modelling (BIM) models? Current architectural software typically provides disconnected methods of aiding spatial cognition. There is a strong history of navigation tools developed for controlling our exploration and movement in BIM models, a study by Ruby Darken and John Sibert (1993) found these tools had a strong influence on people's behaviour and understanding of digital space. People perceive and navigate space differently depending on their individual experience with a BIM model, designers and architects build up a detailed cognitive map during the design of a project, while other people have a less detailed comprehension of a project, having only been exposed to select views. This paper will outline key strategies to improve how people comprehend digital space, supporting people in understanding distance and size while inside BIM models. Three design research projects will be presented. The result of the projects define three strategies; Architectural wayshowing, interior-aware transitions, and distance confirmation. Architectural wayshowing needs to be implemented during the design phase, while the remaining two need to be introduced into BIM editing and viewing software.

summary One of the problems in teaching students how to design kinetic architecture is the difficulty of helping them grasp concepts like motion, physical computing and fabrication, concepts not generally dealt with in conventional architectural projects. In this paper, we introduce a pedagogical method for better utilizing prototyping and explore the role prototyping plays in learning and conceptualizing design ideas. Our method is based on building the learner’s sensory experience through iteration and focusing on the process as well as the product. Specifically, our research attempts to address the following questions: How can architecture students anticipate and feel motion while they design kinetic prototypes? How do their prototypes enable them to explore design ideas? As a case study, we applied our methodology in an 8-week workshop in a fabrication laboratory in Cairo, Egypt. The workshop was open to young architects and students who had completed at least four semesters of study at the university. We describe the pedagogical approach we developed to build the sensory experience of making motion, and demonstrate the basic setting and stages of the workshop. We show how a cyclical learning process, based on perception and action -- copying and iteration -- contributed to the students’ learning experience and enabled them to create and improvise on their own.

summary The emergence of computational design and fabrication tools has escalated the potentials of architectural ornamentation to become innovative, beautiful, and highly sustainable. Historically, ornament has been known to express character and reveal relationships between materiality, technological advances, and societal evolution. But ornament rapidly declined in the late 1800s in large part due to mechanization and modernist ideals of uniform, unadorned façade components. However, ornamentation in architecture has recently reappeared—a development that can be linked closely to advancements in computational design and digital fabrication. While these advancements offer the ability to create expressive architecture, their potential contribution to the improvement of sustainable architecture has largely been overlooked (Augusti-Juan and Habert 2017). This paper provides a brief revisitation to the history of ornament and investigates the impact of computation and automation on the production of contemporary ornament. The paper also attempts to catalog examples of how designers have used computational technologies to address the growing criticality of environmental concerns. Moreover, the paper presents the Waste Ornament project, a research platform that critically examines how we can leverage technology to augment the visual and sustainable performance of facade ornamentation to reduce energy use in buildings. Three sub-projects are identified as territories for further research into sustainable ornamentation, ranging from material sourcing, to high-performance buildings, to the development of a systematic upcycling process that transforms old facades into new ones. While the examples are not exhaustive, they attempt to interlace the general ideas of waste and ornament by addressing particular issues that converge at building envelopes.

summary Current advancements in information technology and mechanical components offer incredible new possibilities for innovation in architecture. Many aspects of our physical environment are becoming integrated with information systems, a phenomenon that has been referred to as the "Internet of Things." The implications and applications of this technology are far-reaching, and students who are learning about design in today's environment have a bewildering array of new tools available for their exploration. This paper reviews some of the central concepts of contemporary data-driven design, and describes how these concepts can be used in a pedagogical framework to encourage student innovation. The authors provide details about their work with students in IDR Studios, and highlight some of the innovative design solutions created by students using information-based toolsets. This research provides a pedagogical framework for helping design students to engage with new technological resources as they work to develop the architectural intelligence.

summary GrowMorph is an ongoing research project that addresses the logic of bacterial cellular growth and its potential uses in architecture and design. While natural forms have always been an inspiration for human creativity, contemporary technology and scientific knowledge can allow us to advance the principle of biomimesis in striking new directions. By examining various patterns of bacterial growth, including their parametric logic, their use of responsive membranes and scaffolding structures, and their environmental fitness, this research creates new algorithmic design and construction models that can be applied through digital fabrication. Based on data from confocal microscopy, simulations were created using programming language Processing to model the environmental responses and morphology of the bacteria's growth. To demonstrate the utility of the results, the simulations created in this research were used to design an organically shaped pavilion and to suggest a new digital knitting process for material construction. The results from the study can inspire designers to make use of bacterial growth logic in their work, and provide them with practical tools for this purpose. Potential applications include novel designs for responsive surfaces, new fabrication processes, and unique spatial structures in future architectural work.

summary It is fairly important for architects and urban designers to understand how different people interact with the environment. However, traditional investigation methods for studying environmental behavior are quite limited in their coverage of samples and regions, which are not sufficient to delve into the behavioral differences of people. Only recently, the development of indoor positioning systems (IPS) and data-mining techniques has made it possible to collect full-time, full-coverage data for behavioral difference research and individualized identification. In our research, the Wi-Fi IPS system is chosen among the various IPS systems as the data source due to its extensive applicability and acceptable cost. In this paper, we analyzed a 60-day anonymized dataset from a ski resort, collected by a Wi-Fi IPS system with 110 Wi-Fi access points. Combining this with mobile phone data and questionnaires, we revealed some interesting characteristics of tourists from different origins through spatial-temporal behavioral data, and further conducted individual labeling through supervised learning. Through this case study, temporal-spatial behavioral data from an IPS system exhibited great potential in revealing individual characteristics besides exploring group differences, shedding light on the prospect of architectural space personalization.

summary The advent of artificial intelligence, specifically neural networks, has marked a significant turning point in the field of computation. During such transformative times, we are often faced with a dearth of appropriate vocabulary, which forces us to rely on existing terms, regardless of their inadequacy. This paper argues that the term “interpolation,” typically used in deep learning (DL), is a prime example of this phenomenon. It is not uncommon for beginners to misunderstand its meaning, as DL pioneer Francois Chollet (2017) has noted. This misreading is especially true in the discipline of architecture, and this study aims to demonstrate how the meaning of “interpolation” has evolved in the second digital turn. We begin by illustrating, using 2D data, the difference between linear interpolation in the context of topological figures and its use in DL algorithms. We then demonstrate how 3DGANs can be employed to interpolate across different topologies in complex 3D space, highlighting the distinction between linear and manifold interpolation. In both 2D and 3D examples, our results indicate that the process does not involve continuous morphing but instead resembles the piecing together of a jigsaw puzzle to form many parts of a larger ambient space. Our study reveals how previous architectural research on DL has employed the term “interpolation” without clarifying the crucial differences from its use in the first digital turn. We demonstrate the new possibilities that manifold interpolation offers for architecture, which extend well beyond parametric variations of the same topology.

As a direct consequence to this claim, designers are challenged to rethink architecture and develop new ways of confronting with materials. A potential answer to this problem is the exploration of computational logics for architectural design and fabrication inspired by the observation of biological formations. This work explores how the biological model of bone microstructure can be applied to a larger scale architecture that is structurally responsive, by means of computational design and Additive Manufacturing.

summary This paper discusses New York based architecture practice - SHoP's project delivery strategies, to demonstrate an avant-garde methodology in pursuing architect-led project environments where optimised outcomes are achieved with digital workflows. The paper elaborates on how today's Chinese architecture adopts global digital trends while certain barriers are impeding development of computationally integrated project delivery modes. Thirdly, the paper indicates the emergence of a new generation of digital architects in China, showcasing their practices to argue for the regional applicability of SHoP's working mode. The paper concludes by summarising the disadvantages of the current Chinese architectural system, advocating the necessity of a systematic digitalisation, and discussing the Western potential in China's modernising architecture.

title Encoding bamboo’s nature for freeform structure design

summary Bamboo is a construction material that is renewable, environmentally friendly and widely available. It has long been used in various projects, ranging from temporary, easily assembled and rectilinear structures to complex freeform pavilions. Design with bamboo has never been easy to architects and engineers due to its irregular shape and round section. This prompts the need to develop a new design process that can accommodate those properties that hinder bamboo to be used by designers. In this article, we take a close look at freeform structure design and specifically demonstrate how systematically and algorithmically parametric modelling can be used to tackle bamboo material irregularities and bamboo jointing challenges. A two-stage optimization process is proposed to support a fabricable freeform structure design through encoding material properties and freeform shape optimization. The approach approximates the given freeform shape using a finite set of unique bamboo elements while maintaining the aesthetic design intention. By limiting the number of bamboo elements, it will provide insight to both designers and engineers on the efficiency and cost benefits of producing required structure elements for the final assembly.

summary As a traditional design media, drawing usually has limitations in dealing with non-Euclidean geometrical problem, and therefore is highly challenged by the digital tools in contemporary architecture. This paper offers an explanation of the working mechanism of spherical perspective, an alternative projection instrument, to explore the potential of drawing in digital design scenario. Firstly, the paper reviews how architects notated nonorthogonal geometry by introducing perspective projection into the drawing system of Stereotomy in history. Then based on the conclusion from historical research, the paper develops a design tool, which would be able to translate geometry from orthogonal projection system to spherical one to generate non-Euclidean form. In the end, the paper brings further discussions about the formal and spatial effects brought by this new tool, and its potential and difficulty to be developed into professional design and representation media for architectural practice.

title Revisiting Parquet Deformations from a computational perspective: A novel method for design and analysis

summary Parquet Deformation is an architectural studio exercise introduced by William Huff in 1960s. It aims to improve students’ reasoning of spatiotemporal variation by utilizing sequential shapeshifting of patterns. This article examines the outcomes of this educational research from a perspective of design computing with a purpose to remark its pedagogical significance. A multilayered reading about the exercise will reveal its historical, theoretical, and artistic backgrounds. Then the common structural elements and different construction approaches are explained along with a novel design and analysis method. The proposed method embeds variations of two-dimensional pattern deformations on a third dimension. It enables various analyses such as the measurement of regularity and locating the attractor points. This study is expected to exemplify how computational thinking and new digital tools change the way designers would approach to such systematic compositions.

summary In the case of designers, architects and arts, tools are part of a repertoire of cognitive, symbolic, and semiotic artifacts with which each explores and learn about design problems. Nonetheless, when using digital fabrication tools, a dichotomy between what is ideated and what is made appears as an evident problem since many of the perceptual aspects of sensing and thinking about new things in the making are neglected. It is argued that this establishes a dichotomy between what is ideated and what is executed as an outcome from that idea. How designers can think, learn and augment their creativity by using digital tools in a more relational, exploratory, interactive and creative way? Furthermore, how can we teach design using contemporary fabrication tools beyond its representational capabilities? This paper explores the richness of using digital fabrication tools through the lens of shapes grammars as a design paradigm in order to extend computational making including digital fabrication tools, gestures and material behavior as crucial actors of the design process. Through the use of discrete heuristics - that is, the elaboration of deictic rules for computation with physical objects, materials and fabrication tools in a precise yet perceptual way- this paper shows experiments inside a third year design studio to overcome the hylomorphism present in the digital design and make dichotomy.

summary In 1952 the Italian Olivetti Company opened a study laboratory on electronic calculators in New Canaan, USA; in 1955 it created an electronic research laboratory in Pisa and two years later, co-founded a company to produce electronic conductors. In 1959 it presented ELEA 9003 and in 1965 the P101, respectively the first full transistorized computer and the first desktop computer. This paper aims to investigate how the Olivetti Company accomplished in such a brief period of time a pioneer vision in the field of computing. By one hand it seeks to highlight the forerunner idea of Adriano Olivetti (1901-1960) for an integrated awareness of what computing could become and on the other hand, how that wakefulness fostered an innovative agenda among architects, designers, filmmakers and scientists for the invention of the computer as an artifact expression of an epoch. This successful endeavor anticipated what would become the concept of personal computing. Moreover the paper underlines how the early commercial development of Olivetti and IBM computing flourished in the context of the Universal Exhibitions of Brussels and New York.

summary This paper proposes and examines a new way of cooperation between human workers and machine intelligence in architectural scale construction. For the transfer of construction information between the physical and digital world, mature technologies such as Radio Frequency IDentifier (RFID), and emerging technologies like Augmented Reality (AR) are used in parallel to supplement each other. Dynamic data flow is implemented to synchronize digital and physical models by following the ID signatures of individual building parts. The contributions of this paper includes the demonstration of current technological limitations, and the proposal of a hybrid system between human and computer, which is tested in order to explore the possibilities of digitally enhanced construction methods.

summary Computer-aided design has found its role in the undergraduate education of architects, and presently design by coding is also gradually finding further prominence in accord with the increasing demand by students who wish to learn more about this topic. This subject is included in an integrated manner in some studio courses on architecture design in some schools, or it is taught separately in elsewhere. In terms of the separate course on coding, the principal difficulty is that actual applications of the method can rarely be included due to time limitations and the fact that it is conducted separately from the studio course on architecture. However, within the framework of the architectural education, in order to learn about the coding it is necessary to consider it along with the design process, and this versatile thinking can only be achieved by the application of the design. In this study, an elective undergraduate course is considered in the context of design and to yield a versatile thinking strategy while learning the language of visual programming. The course progressed under the theoretical framework of shape grammar from the design stage through to the digital fabrication process, and the experimental studies were carried out on the selected topic of Islamic pattern. A method was proposed to improve the productivity of such courses, and an evaluation of the results is presented.

summary In the past, there has been a rapid evolution in computational tools to represent and analyze architectural designs. Analysis tools can be used in all stages of the design process, but they are often only used in the final stages, where it might be too late to impact the design. This is due to the considerable time and effort typically needed to produce the analytical models required by the analysis tools. A possible solution would be to convert the digital architectural models into analytical ones, but unfortunately, this often results in errors and frequently the analytical models need to be built almost from scratch. These issues discourage architects from doing a performance-oriented exploration of their designs in the early stages of a project. To overcome these issues, we propose Algorithmic Design and Analysis, a method for analysis that is based on adapting and extending an algorithmic-based design representation so that the modeling operations can generate the elements of the analytical model containing solely the information required by the analysis tool. Using this method, the same algorithm that produces the digital architectural model can also automatically generate analytical models for different types of analysis. Using the proposed method, there is no information loss and architects do not need additional work to perform the analysis. This encourages architects to explore several design alternatives while taking into account the design’s performance. Moreover, when architects know the set of design variations they wish to analyze beforehand, they can easily automate the analysis process.

title Representing the Aesthetics of Richard Meier’s Houses Using Building Information Modeling

summary Beyond its widespread use for representing technical aspects and matters of building and construction science, Building information modeling (BIM) can be used to represent architectural relationships and rules drawn from aesthetic theory. This research suggests that BIM provides not only vocabulary but also syntactical tools that can be used to capture an architectural language. In a case study using Richard Meier’s language for single-family detached houses, a BIM template has been devised to represent the aesthetic concepts and relations therein. The template employs parameterized conceptual mass objects, syntactical rules, and a library of architectonic elements, such as walls, roofs, columns, windows, doors, and railings. It constrains any design produced using the template to a grammatically consistent expression or style. The template has been used as the starting point for modeling the Smith House, the Douglas House, and others created by the authors, demonstrating that the aesthetic template is general to many variations. Designing with the template to produce a unique but conforming design further illustrates the generality and expressiveness of the language. Having made the formal language explicit, in terms of syntactical rules and vocabulary, it becomes easier to vary the formal grammar and concrete vocabulary to produce variant languages and styles. Accordingly, this approach is not limited to a specific style, such as Richard Meier's. Future research can be conducted to demonstrate how designing with BIM can support stylistic change. Adoption of this approach in practice could improve the consistency of architectural designs and their coherence to defined styles, potentially increasing the general level of aesthetic expression in our built environment.

summary This paper presents a method for translating physical interaction with design objects into parametric relationships. A framework of the method is created to automate the generation of parametric equations as modeling constraints. The prototypes developed for this work link digital models with their physical counterparts to create a hybrid and tangible interface that enables user interaction. The prototypes investigate linear and non-linear types of object relationships for creating parametric models. The results demonstrate a novel approach in architectural design that assists users in creating complex geometric relationships through intuitive interaction.
