summary Nowadays , we are able to produce geometric models of historical buildings at different scales of detail, using photos and measurements. This is true when you are observing something that is still under your eyes. We are faced more and more with lack of preservation actions and maintenance activities, policies framed without foresight, unexpected natural events, etc., that are forcing professionals and researchers to operate without usual data. In such cases, we need a consistent repository to collect and distribute data to produce information.Furthermore, we need to "give intelligence" to these repositories, in order to query them with respect to geometrical instances, topological issues, historical features, etc. This last aspect, (archives and databases connected with geometrical aspects), lead our digital model to a new dimension, the informative one (where spatial, temporal, historical and building parameters work together), that should always characterize speculative actions towards the constitution of a wealth of knowledge. We need to work on the efficiency of the process to reach effective methodologies of survey.

summary This research explores the development of seamless pneumatically actuated systems whose motion is controlled by the combination of differentially knitted textiles and standardized thin-walled silicone tubing. This work proposes a fundamental material strategy that addresses challenges ranging from soft robotics to pneumatic architecture. Research in soft robotics seeks to achieve complex motions through non-mechanical monolithic systems, comprised of highly articulated shapes molded with a combination of elastic and inelastic materials. Inflatables in architecture focus largely on the active structuring of static forms, as facade systems or as structured envelopes. An emerging use of pneumatic architecture proposes morphable, adaptive systems accomplished through differentiated mechanically interconnected components. In the research described in this paper, a wide array of capabilities in motion and geometric articulation are accomplished through the design of knitted sleeves that generate a series of actuated “elbows.” As opposed to molding silicone bladders, differentiation in motion is generated through the more facile ability of changing stitch structure, and shaping of the knitted textile sleeve, which constrains the standard silicone tubing. The relationship between knit differentiation, pneumatic pressure, and the resultant motion profile is studied initially with individual actuators, and ultimately in propositions for larger seamless assemblies. As opposed to a cellular study of individual components, this research proposes structures with multi-scalar articulation, from fiber and stitch to overall form, composed into seamless, massively deformable architectures.

summary One of the problems in teaching students how to design kinetic architecture is the difficulty of helping them grasp concepts like motion, physical computing and fabrication, concepts not generally dealt with in conventional architectural projects. In this paper, we introduce a pedagogical method for better utilizing prototyping and explore the role prototyping plays in learning and conceptualizing design ideas. Our method is based on building the learner’s sensory experience through iteration and focusing on the process as well as the product. Specifically, our research attempts to address the following questions: How can architecture students anticipate and feel motion while they design kinetic prototypes? How do their prototypes enable them to explore design ideas? As a case study, we applied our methodology in an 8-week workshop in a fabrication laboratory in Cairo, Egypt. The workshop was open to young architects and students who had completed at least four semesters of study at the university. We describe the pedagogical approach we developed to build the sensory experience of making motion, and demonstrate the basic setting and stages of the workshop. We show how a cyclical learning process, based on perception and action -- copying and iteration -- contributed to the students’ learning experience and enabled them to create and improvise on their own.

summary Computational visual simulations are extremely useful and powerful tools for decision-making. The use of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) has become a common phenomenon due to real-time and interactive visual simulation tools in architectural and urban design studies and presentations. In this study, a demonstration is performed to integrate Structure from Motion (SfM) into VR and AR. A 3D modeling method is explored by SfM under realtime rendering as a solution for the modeling cost in large-scale VR. The study examines the application of camera parameters of SfM to realize an appropriate registration and tracking accuracy in marker-less AR to visualize full-scale design projects on a planned construction site. The proposed approach is applied to plural real architectural and urban design projects, and results indicate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

keywords This paper documents the development and application of a set of computational tools under the name ZEBRA to support and facilitate the design, simulation and realization of two and three-dimensional moiré animation installation. Additionally to traditional two-dimensional moiré animations, the authors implemented the above tools to examine a novel approach which combines the depth of field and motion of the spectator to achieve a large-scale, analogue animation effect in three dimensions. The tools were established to aid the design of an interactive sculptural installation for a memorial in Cyprus which was completed in March 2017. ZEBRA is currently in beta testing and will be launched as a plugin for Grasshopper 3D in the near future.

summary The understanding of space relies on motion, as we experience space by crossing it in time, space’s fourth dimension. However, architects lack the necessary tools to incorporate people's motion into their design of space. As a consequence, architects fail to connect space with the motion of the people that inhabit their buildings, creating disorienting environments. Further, what if augmentation technology changes how we inhabit space and the static built environment does not fit people anymore? This paper explores the problem of developing a model from people's motion, to inform and augment the architecture design process in the early stages. As an outcome, I have designed a model based on data from human-space interaction obtained through field work. First, relevant behavior was identified and recorded. Second, a metric was extracted from the data and composed by speed, the 4th D dimension as time, and gestures. Third, the original behavior was rebuilt, producing a set of rules. The rules were combined to form the model of human-space interaction. This generalizable model provides a novel approach to designing space based on data from people. Moreover, this paper presents a means of incorporating inhabitants' behavior into digital design. Finally, the model contributes to the advancement of people's motion research for general applications, such as in transport engineering, robotics, and cognitive sciences.

summary With the rapid advances in technology, virtual reality(VR) re-emerged as an affordable technology providing new potentials for virtual learning environments(VLE). Within the scope of this study, firstly a general perspective on potentials of VR to create an appropriate VLE is put forward regarding the potentials related with learning modalities. Then, VR as a VLE in architectural education is discussed and utilization of VR is revisited considering the fundamentals of education as how to enhance skills regarding creativity, furnish students to adopt future skills and how VR can be used to enhance design understanding as well as space perception and spatial relations. It is deliberated that instead of mirroring the real spaces, allowing students to understand the virtuality with its own constituents will broaden the understanding of space, spatial relations, scale, motion, and time both in physical and virtual. The dichotomy between physical and virtual materiality, the potentials and pitfalls in the process of transformation from real/physical to virtual - virtual to real/physical are discussed in relation with the student projects designed in the scope of Digital Design Studio course in Middle East Technical University. It is also shown that VR stimulates different learning modalities especially kinesthetic modality and helping students to develop creativity and metacognition about space and spatial relations.

summary Current research, as a part of on-going PhD research, explores the possibilities of dynamic pattern inspired from biomimetic design and presents a structured framework for light to manage strategies. The experiment stresses the improvement of daylight performance through the design and motion of kinetic facades using various integrated software.The impact of kinetic motion of hexagonal pattern was studied by integrating triangle and triangle covering through blooming pyramids on south-facing skin to control the daylight distribution, using a parametric simulation technique. The simulation was carried out for a south oriented façade of an office room in Rome, Italy over three phases. The first optimized results represent the static base case, which were compared to the other two proposed dynamic models in this research. Results demonstrate that dynamic façade achieved a better daylighting performance in comparison to optimized static base case.

summary Cinematic space is ephemeral and fleeting. After capture on film, the physical space of cinema is erased as lights are dimmed, props are dismantled, old sets torn down and new ones erected. For the understanding and research of historic cinematic space this is inherently limiting. Can computational tools aid this research and allow for digital reconstruction of film sets and scenes? This paper initiates a line of study into restitution methods of cinematic space. Assessment of software-based photogrammetry methods to cinematic sequences leads to the development of a bespoke parametric linear perspective reconstruction tool.

summary This study investigates design opportunities fostered by fabrication processes, ex-ploring manual and robotic forming. It links handcraft and digital fabrication techniques by implementing a motion capture system. It suggests physical prototyping as a novel form of design research, operating in the dynamic field between human capabilities, machine skills, and material behavior. This paper presents a series of experimental case studies created in a seminar taught by the author at Graz University of Technology. In this course, students con-duct tactile experiments, forming panels by hand and by robot, guided by the material behav-ior and reaction. Thereby, they explore the creation of architectural form in a dynamic inter-play between human, machine and material. Movement and speed of hand forming proce-dures are recorded into digital data, and then converted into machine code, driving a 6-axis industrial robotic arm. By using the same set-up for manual and robotic forming, both pro-cesses are relatable.

summary Acoustics is typically considered only late in developed design or even post occupancy, if at all, for specification of finishes and furnishing, and typically with a remedial mindset. In this paper, the role of sound performance as a design driver in increasing the speech privacy of a semi-enclosed meeting space in an open plan interior is studied. Sound performance prediction is applied as an imperative input to inform the meeting space design. The design is the second iteration in an evolving series of meeting spaces, and therefore has benefited from both subjective experiments and objective measurements performed with the first meeting space prototype. This study promotes a design method that offers a strong relationship between the digital simulation of sound performance and design development. By improving the speech privacy of a meeting space by means of purely form, geometry and design decisions, the significance of architecture in tuning the sound performance of a space is investigated.

summary Algorithmic design allows architects to design using a programming-based approach. Current algorithmic design environments are based on existing computer-aided design applications or building information modeling applications, such as AutoCAD, Rhinoceros 3D, or Revit, which, due to their complexity, fail to give architects the immediate feedback they need to explore algorithmic design. In addition, they do not address the current trend of moving applications to the cloud to improve their availability. To address these problems, we propose a software architecture for an algorithmic design integrated development environment (IDE), based on web technologies, that is more interactive than competing algorithmic design IDEs. Besides providing an intuitive editing interface which facilitates programming tasks for architects, its performance can be an order of magnitude faster than current algorithmic design IDEs, thus supporting real-time feedback with more complex algorithmic design programs. Moreover, our solution also allows architects to export the generated model to their preferred computer-aided design applications. This results in an algorithmic design environment that is accessible from any computer, while offering an interactive editing environment that integrates into the architect’s workflow.

summary Digital fabrication has transformed the way buildings are constructed by applying methods such as friction-fit connection. This technique has been propagated by WikiHouse which aims to develop open building technologies to different environmental contexts. However, the indiscriminate use of the model may result in inefficiency of housing performance. This work, therefore, investigates solutions for adapting WikiHouses to the tropics, according to principles proposed by Armando de Holanda in ‘A Guide to Build in Northeast Brazil’. Nevertheless, difficulties related to certain adaptations were observed such as connections compatibility and design of large open spaces, especially because these systems depend on a maximum size of parts.

summary Mass customization (MC) and personal fabrication (PF) are current relevant topics in architecture offices practice and schools design research. Architects are adopting information based design and production techniques as a response to architectural century challenges. summary To ensure access to sunlight in urban planning, specialized software is available. Mainly used in the initial stages, these tools allow the study of the environmental performance of the proposal. However, neighborhood impact is seen as a secondary aspect, usually evaluated with GIS tools, simulating pre-existing or proposed situations. However, visual programming tools allow, data processing in addition to parametric modeling, streamlining the process of analysis of architectural and urban pre-existences and proposals. From a case study, we present a methodology that uses these tools to demonstrate the loss of daylight performance of open spaces due to urban densification.

summary This article discusses the Brazilian architecture professional devaluation, identifying factors that contribute to a process of disqualification. It provides the basis for possible reflections by architecture councils. Authors pointed out that the BIM evolution would lead to unexplored fields, such as standards to increase project quality. The study suggests the development of an instrument that certifies services, methodologies and teams positively positioned in the contemporary demands of the AEC sector. By incorporating existing standards, the technology is justified as the basis, allowing this quality to be extended to contractors, reinforcing the multidisciplinary character with its involved professional’s responsibility.

summary Algorithmic BIM combines BIM and Generative Design (GD), merging the potentialities of both approaches. In this paper we describe the design process of a set of parametric facades developed using Algorithmic-BIM, and how this approach was integrated into the design workflow of two architectural studios. We demonstrate how the integration of GD together with BIM influenced the whole design process and also the selection of the final solution. Some of the limitations found during the entire process are also addressed in the paper, such as tight deadlines and financial constraints. Finally, we explain the pros and cons of using this design method compared to a traditional BIM approach, and we discuss the implementation of this paradigm in a traditional design practice. This work was developed using Rosetta, an IDE for Generative Design that supports scripts using different programming languages and allows the generation and edition of 3D models in a variety of CAD and BIM applications. The result of this work is an information model of three parametric facades for a residential building, from which we can extract material quantities and construction performance tests.
