summary For several years great effort has been devoted to the study of Architectural Design Optimization (ADO). However, although in the recent years ADO has attracted much attention from academia, optimization methods and tools have had a limited influence on the architectural profession. The aim of the study is to reveal users' expectations from the optimization tools and define limitations preventing wide-spread adaptation of the optimization solvers in the architectural practice. The paper presents the results of the survey "Optimization in the architectural practice" conducted between December 2015 and February 2016 on 165 architectural trainees and practising architects from 34 countries. The results show that there is a need for an interactive multi-objective optimization tool, as 78% respondents declared that a multi-objective optimization is more necessary in their practice than a single objective one and 91% of them acknowledged the need for choice of promising solutions during optimization process. Finally, it has been found that daylight, structure and geometry are three top factors which architects are interested in optimizing.

summary In the past, there has been a rapid evolution in computational tools to represent and analyze architectural designs. Analysis tools can be used in all stages of the design process, but they are often only used in the final stages, where it might be too late to impact the design. This is due to the considerable time and effort typically needed to produce the analytical models required by the analysis tools. A possible solution would be to convert the digital architectural models into analytical ones, but unfortunately, this often results in errors and frequently the analytical models need to be built almost from scratch. These issues discourage architects from doing a performance-oriented exploration of their designs in the early stages of a project. To overcome these issues, we propose Algorithmic Design and Analysis, a method for analysis that is based on adapting and extending an algorithmic-based design representation so that the modeling operations can generate the elements of the analytical model containing solely the information required by the analysis tool. Using this method, the same algorithm that produces the digital architectural model can also automatically generate analytical models for different types of analysis. Using the proposed method, there is no information loss and architects do not need additional work to perform the analysis. This encourages architects to explore several design alternatives while taking into account the design’s performance. Moreover, when architects know the set of design variations they wish to analyze beforehand, they can easily automate the analysis process.

summary Nowadays , we are able to produce geometric models of historical buildings at different scales of detail, using photos and measurements. This is true when you are observing something that is still under your eyes. We are faced more and more with lack of preservation actions and maintenance activities, policies framed without foresight, unexpected natural events, etc., that are forcing professionals and researchers to operate without usual data. In such cases, we need a consistent repository to collect and distribute data to produce information.Furthermore, we need to "give intelligence" to these repositories, in order to query them with respect to geometrical instances, topological issues, historical features, etc. This last aspect, (archives and databases connected with geometrical aspects), lead our digital model to a new dimension, the informative one (where spatial, temporal, historical and building parameters work together), that should always characterize speculative actions towards the constitution of a wealth of knowledge. We need to work on the efficiency of the process to reach effective methodologies of survey.

summary Architecture is a profession that requires collaboration among professionals from various fields. Despite the important nature of these interdisciplinary collaborations, architecture students rarely obtain the opportunity to learn about the work areas of other stakeholders and the practice of working together. In all sectors there is a growing need for professionals who possess in-depth knowledge in their own disciplines and also develop an understanding about other related disciplines. In a setting of a student project competition, this article examines how students from various AEC fields collaborate using BIM as a common data environment and emphasizes several considerations for implementing interdisciplinary collaborations in curriculums of architecture schools in students’ perspective.

summary On nowadays social, technological and economic context everything changes constantly so there is the persistent need to adapt at all levels. This research defends that Architecture should do the same through the use of kinetic and interactive buildings, or elements in a building. These elements should allow the building to adapt to changing needs and conditions. This article describes the current state of an ongoing research that proposes the use of kinetic Rigid Origami foldable surfaces to be used as roofs for spaces with big spans and the practical contribution that the Design Studio Surfaces INPLAY has brought to it.

summary In a context where architectural education is undergoing great transformations due to the impact of digital technology, the authors present a design studio model that rather than teaching how to operate the tool en vogue focuses on the formulation of questions. Traditional pedagogic practices have privileged answers in knowledge production, but an alternative is proposed. A methodology was devised in which problem-finding is moved forward by an iterative process of experimental making. This was tested in Winter 2017 with results showing a diversity in questions raised, but also the premature discontinuation of several paths of inquiry. Only one completed all 6 planned iterations and benefited from the final, in which the building of a 1:1 prototype informed its research focus. The conclusions highlight the contribution of this model in preparing future practitioners with an attitude of inquiry and drive to experiment that will resist obsoleteness from rapid technological developments.

summary The built environment is a complex juxtaposition of static matter and dynamic flows, tangible objects and human experiences, physical realities and digital spaces. This paper offers an alternative understanding of those dichotomies by applying experimental design research strategies that combine objective quantification and subjective perception of urban contexts. The assumption is that layers of measurable datasets can be afforded with personal feedback to reveal "hidden" characteristics of cities. Drawing on studies from data and cognitive sciences, the proposed method allows us to analyze, quantify and visualize the individual experience of the built environment in relation to different urban qualities. By operating in between the scientific domain and the design realm, four design research experiments are presented. Leveraging augmenting and sensing technologies, these studies investigate: (1) urban attractors and user attention, employing eye-tracking technologies during walking; (2) urban proxemics and sensory experience, applying proximity sensors and EEG scanners in varying contexts; (3) urban mood and spatial perception, using mobile applications to merge tangible qualities and subjective feelings; and (4) urban vibe and paced dynamics, combining vibration sensing and observational data for studying city beats. This work demonstrates that, by adopting a multisensory and multidisciplinary approach, it is possible to gain a more human-centered, and perhaps novel understanding of the built environment. A lexicon of experimented urban situations may become a reference for studying different typologies of environments from the user experience, and provide a framework to support creative intuition for the development of more engaging, pleasant, and responsive spaces and places.

summary Every city has under utilized spaces that create a series of serious negative effects. Waiting for major interventions, those spaces can be reactivated and revitalized with soft temporary projects: micro interventions that light up the attention, give new meaning and add a new reading to abandoned spaces. We can call this kind of operations "plug-in design", inheriting the term from computer architecture: interventions which aim to involve the citizens and activate the environment, engage multiple catalyst processes and civil actions. Plug-in design interventions are by all meanings experimental, they seek for interaction with the users, locally and globally. Information Technology - with its parametric and site-specific capabilities and interactive features - can be instrumental to create such designs and generate a new consciousness of the existing environment. With this paper we will illustrate how two low-budget interventions have re-activated a forgotten public space. Parametric design with a specific script allowing site-specific design, materials and structure optimization and a series of interactive features, will be presented through Reciprocal 1.0 and Reciprocal 2.0 projects which have been built in 2016 in Italy by the nITro group.

summary Currently most professional modeling and computer graphics software packages embed a scripting language. This is an early report on collecting data about software applications and coding tools geared towards the educational environment, preparing a listing for further evaluation and analysis of platforms. An increase in the adoption of Python as the embedded scripting syntax in many established tools can already be recognized, therefore the creation of educational materials on Python for design and architectural education merits further attention. Other insights on the educational potential of the available tools might be gained by advancing the data collection and evaluation work.

summary Choice overload is experienced when designers use generative systems to explore a large number of alternatives. In an experiment, we studied the epistemic actions designers perform to reduce their cognitive load caused by possible choice overload during design exploration. The participants were asked to select alternatives among a large set of solutions in a simulated design environment. For data encoding, we adapted an epistemic action analysis method to understand which actions occurs in what phase of design. Most epistemic actions are observed during criteria applying phase. The most frequent actions were 'clustering and grouping' and 'talking and gestures to guide attention'. Ultimately our goal is to answer if a system can alleviate the possible cognitive overload when working with a large number of alternatives, if so how they would look when implemented.

summary Additive manufacturing techniques and materials have evolved rapidly during the last decade. Applications in architecture, engineering and construction are getting more attention as 3D printing is trying to find its place in the industry. Due to high material prices for metal 3d printing and in-homogenous material behaviour in printed plastic, 3D printing has not yet had a very significant impact at the scale of buildings. Limitations on scale, cost, and structural performance have also hindered the advancement of the technology and research up to this point. The research presented here takes a case study for the application of 3D printing at a furniture scale based on a novel custom optimisation approach for structural nodes. Through the concentration of non-standard geometry on the highly complex custom optimised nodes, 3D printers at industrial product scale could be used for the additive manufacture of the structural nodes. This research presents a design strategy with a digital process chain using parametric modeling, virtual prototyping, structural simulation, custom optimisation and additive CAD/CAM for a digital workflow from design to production. Consequently, the digital process chain for the development of structural nodes was closed in a holistic manner at a suitable scale.

summary Architecture is heading towards a future where data is collected, collated and presented in a dynamic platform. There is a potential for many standard processes in the industry to become automated, such as the site analysis process. Streamlining aspects of the design process allows architects to pay greater attention on creative design solutions for their buildings and less time engaging in complex, time consuming analytical programs. Urban Pinboard, a web-based GIS platform, promises to establish a bi-directional workflow between web data depositories and computational tools through the medium of a website. By doing so, the website allows users with minimal experience in computational processes to be engaged in the utilisation of these large datasets. Through the automation of these processes, relationships within the built environment industry can excel, leading towards performative driven designs.

summary To construct a building that meets the requirements of certification in terms of environmental friendliness, there must be a process that considers the certification criteria from the initial design phase. However, there are numerous complicated task performance procedures to analyse many required items in detail as well as perceive and apply the data requirements efficiently. Currently, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is gaining attention as a solution for environmental problems in architecture. BIM shows precisely how a virtual building is modelled in the real world, thereby providing an objective information and analysis through a simulation. However, the result values of BIM library or modelling may turn out differently as a result of the work environment of designers or users that is not standardized. Therefore, this study applies the modelled and extracted BIM data using the template and library established in the BIM add-in planning and design phase to review in advance the Green Standard for Energy and Environmental Design (G-SEED) assessment by item and manual input of users with the BIM-based (add-in) G-SEED assessment system, thereby providing support to enable users to establish specific strategies in designing green buildings.

summary This paper is situated in a specific research by design setting, where the realised work of architecture has been generated with digital tools operated by analogue minds of designers. It examines the relation- ship between the two entities, the designer and the tools, in an attempt to understand their specific roles better, trusting that this can lead to anew ways of enhancing the design process. Through revisiting the processes, methods, techniques and tools employed within various design-cycles of the project, authors present their own /designerly/ experience, pointing to both the potentials and limitations of the digital tools used. summary It is of great significance to establish the virtual visual/audio simulation in building environment or indoor auditorium, as this is also a key issue which has drawn attention from other research fields including computer-aided design, virtual reality and acoustic simulation. This paper introduces the architecture and realization of a seat selection system based on audio-visual integration technology and the subjective preference test based on the seat selection system. The visual/audio subjective evaluation experiments on Xiamen Concert Hall and Ferrara Opera House were carried out, the experiments show that visual-audio factors have impact on the visual-audio preference and subjective evaluation of concert halls and theatres. The combined effect of acoustic and non-acoustic parameters (such as visual factors) on hearing and the perception of acoustics is also discussed in the paper.

summary This paper presents the experience of the first phase of remodeling existing historical and colonial district in Bandung, Indonesia, including existing building façade, streetscape and street furniture. Braga Street is chosen as study case because it is a well-known historical street in Bandung with art deco style buildings constructed during Dutch colonial era. By remodeling it, it could help stakeholders to evaluate existing Braga street condition, to test any modification of buildings along the street and to determine specific regulation for the street. In this case, we use Unity3D and Oculus Rift DK2 for remodeling current situation. We gathered feedback from respondents using a questionnaire given after they experienced the model in VR. Many lessons learned from modeling process and respondents' feedback: higher frame rate to make seamless VR experience by having all components on a low poly model and provide smoother movement to prevent visual discomfort. This paper's conclusion gives suggestions for anyone who want to start architecture modeling in virtual reality for the very first time and how to optimize it.

summary In architectural education, the demand for creating forms with a non-Euclidean geometry, which can only be achieved by using the computer-aided design tools, is increasing. The teaching of this subject is a great challenge for both students and instructors, because of the intensive nature of architecture undergraduate programs. Therefore, for the creation of those forms with a non-Euclidean geometry, experimental work was carried out in an elective course based on the learning visual programming language. The creation of folding structures with form-finding by simulation was chosen as the subject of the design production which would be done as part of the content of the course. In this particular course, it was intended that all stages should be experienced, from the modeling in the virtual environment to the digital fabrication. Hence, in their early years of architectural education, the students were able to learn versatile thinking by experiencing, simultaneously, the use of simulation in the environment of visual programming language, the forming space by using folding structures, the material-based thinking and the creation of their designs suitable to the digital fabrication.

summary Acoustical design is one of the most challenging aspects of architecture. A complex system of competing influences (e.g., space geometry, size, proportion, material properties, surface detail, etc.) contribute to shaping the quality of the auditory experience. In particular, architectural surfaces affect the way that sound reflections propagate through space. By diffusing the reflected sound energy, surface designs can promote a more homogeneous auditory atmosphere by mitigating sharp and focused reflections. One of the challenges with designing an effective diffuser is the need to respond to a wide band of sound wavelengths, which requires the surface profile to precisely encode a range of detail sizes, depths and angles. Most of the available sound diffusers are designed to respond to a narrow band of frequencies. In this context, fractal-based surface designs can provide a unique opportunity for mitigating such limitations. A key principle of fractal geometry is its multilevel hierarchical order, which enables the same pattern to occur at different scales. This characteristic makes it a potential candidate for diffusing a wider band of sound wavelengths. However, predicting the reflection patterns of complicated fractal-based surface designs can be challenging using available acoustical software. These tools are often costly, complicated and are not designed for predicting early sound propagation paths. This research argues that writing customized algorithms provides a valuable, free and efficient alternative for addressing targeted acoustical design problems. The paper presents a methodology for designing and testing a customized algorithm for predicting sound diffusion patterns of fractal-based surfaces. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were used to develop the code and evaluate the results.
