summary Design tools like Grasshopper are often used to either generate novel forms, to automate certain design processes or to incorporate scientific factors. However, any Grasshopper definition has certain assumptions about design and space built into it from its earliest genesis, when the initial algorithm is set out. Correspondingly, implicit theoretical positions are built into definitions, and therefore its results. Approaching parametric design as a question of architectural, landscape architectural or urban design theory allows the breaking down of traditional boundaries between the technical and the historical or theoretical, and the way parametric design, and urban design history & theory, can be conveyed in the teaching environment. Once the boundaries between software and history & theory are transgressed, Grasshopper can be a way of testing the principles embedded in historical designs and thus these two disciplines can be joined. In urban design, there is an inherent clash between an ideal model and existing urban geography or morphology, and also between formal (qualitative) and numerical (quantitative) aspects. If a model provides a necessary vision for future development, an existing topography then results from the continuous human and natural modifications of a territory. To explore this hypothesis, the “Urban Design Representation” subject in the Master of Urban Design program at the University of Cape Town taught in 2017 & 2018 was approached “parametrically” from these two opposite, albeit convergent, starting points: the conceptual/rational versus the physical/empiric representations of a territory. In this framework, Grasshopper was used to represent typical standards and parameters of modern urban planning (for example, Floor/Area Ratio, height and distance between buildings, site coverage, etc), and a typological approach was adopted to study and “decode” the relationship between public and private space, between the street, the block and topography, between solids and voids. This methodology permits a cross-comparison of different urban design models and the immediate evaluation of their formal outputs derived from parametric data.

summary This work aims at providing a mathematical approach to the problem of allocating given rooms within a given predefined contour shape, while satisfying given adjacency and size constraints. This work is significant with respect to complex building structures, such as hospitals, schools, offices, etc., where we may require floor plans other than rectangular ones and adjacency constraints are defined by the frequency of journeys expected to be made by occupants of the building along different routes. In this paper, we present an algorithmic approach using graph theoretical tools for generating rectilinear floor plan layouts, while satisfying adjacency and size constraints.

summary A shape grammar is a collection of visually defined geometric rules that could be used to automate the generation of formal representations of designs for buildings, cities, products and more. We offer an extension of the shape grammar formalism based entirely on voxel space instead of vectors, which we used for the generation of schematic architectural designs. We describe a method using playability to increase human agency and designer control over the outcome of the generative phase of voxel-shape grammars. The method is presented with an implementation in the environment of Minecraft and employs three guidance mechanisms. To conclude we list a few considerations from our experience in the design of a playable, voxel-shape grammar and point to future work.

summary In this study, we introduce a new approach that incorporates form diversity into architectural design optimization, which will potentially accommodate designers' aesthetic judgment into the whole building optimization process. Form diversity is defined here as the level of difference in building geometric forms. We developed a form comparison algorithm to lead to a reasonable number of optimal design solutions of highly diverse forms. This allows for a post-optimization articulation of preferred solutions, and helps satisfy the aesthetic criterion in parallel to the measurable objectives. The methodology involves experimenting and prototyping. Experiments were done at different progress levels of the optimization tasks to test the feasibility of the system’s framework. A prototype framework was developed using parametric modeling, energy simulation, daylight simulation, Pareto optimization, and Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithms. The initial results demonstrate that the system has the capability to successfully work as desired with possible improvements. Comparison of results before and after shape comparison is discussed.

title Macro-scale designs through topological deformations in the built environment

summary Design studies are being done on contemporary master-plans which may be applied in many locations worldwide. Advances in information technology are becoming the base model of design studies, and these may be more effective than the efforts of humans in the field of architecture and urban design. However, urban morphology variables and constants must be considered while designing contemporary master-plans in the existing built environment. The aims of this study were to extend the use of computer software for different applications and to make a topological work in the regional context. Accordingly, a case study was made using the nCloth simulation tools to create non-Euclidean forms while protecting the road system, which is one of the constant parameters of urban morphology in the built environment.

summary Computer-aided design has found its role in the undergraduate education of architects, and presently design by coding is also gradually finding further prominence in accord with the increasing demand by students who wish to learn more about this topic. This subject is included in an integrated manner in some studio courses on architecture design in some schools, or it is taught separately in elsewhere. In terms of the separate course on coding, the principal difficulty is that actual applications of the method can rarely be included due to time limitations and the fact that it is conducted separately from the studio course on architecture. However, within the framework of the architectural education, in order to learn about the coding it is necessary to consider it along with the design process, and this versatile thinking can only be achieved by the application of the design. In this study, an elective undergraduate course is considered in the context of design and to yield a versatile thinking strategy while learning the language of visual programming. The course progressed under the theoretical framework of shape grammar from the design stage through to the digital fabrication process, and the experimental studies were carried out on the selected topic of Islamic pattern. A method was proposed to improve the productivity of such courses, and an evaluation of the results is presented.

summary Acoustics is typically considered only late in developed design or even post occupancy, if at all, for specification of finishes and furnishing, and typically with a remedial mindset. In this paper, the role of sound performance as a design driver in increasing the speech privacy of a semi-enclosed meeting space in an open plan interior is studied. Sound performance prediction is applied as an imperative input to inform the meeting space design. The design is the second iteration in an evolving series of meeting spaces, and therefore has benefited from both subjective experiments and objective measurements performed with the first meeting space prototype. This study promotes a design method that offers a strong relationship between the digital simulation of sound performance and design development. By improving the speech privacy of a meeting space by means of purely form, geometry and design decisions, the significance of architecture in tuning the sound performance of a space is investigated.

summary This study experiments a process of production of tactile representations of architectural elements of a nineteenth century mansion, house to a university museum: Museu do Doce, Pelotas, RS. The Museum uses the concept of Universal Design to guide its direct and/or mediated communication solutions. The house is distinguished by ceilings of ornamental stuccoes, evidently perceived only by the sense of sight. To describe them, a set of representations is being produced, using 3D scanning and digital fabrication technologies, using formal decomposition, and different scales, to construct a narrative to be understood by touching.

summary Modeling tools are evolving the process of architectural design from the use ordinary digital tool into a role of creator of complex shapes, through coding configurations. These procedures are becoming the structural ground of the architectural shape, going beyond their sole tools role. The increasing in importance of such codes implies a major level of awareness for their use, which is worth of a deeper analysis. The system of relations among parts in an architectural design picks a single configuration among infinite others, because it is produced by a design process which find its fulfillment in the final portray. Through the spreading of digital design tools, such final configuration becomes a step in a clearly reproducible process. The project is achieved through a series of starting conditions, which undergo a parametric process, that produces the final result. An identical parametric process can be applied under slightly different starting conditions and produce completely different results. These results are connected with the code which produced them, but is the authorship still property of the original author?

summary The following paper proposes a way of reading and systematizing 3d representations of cities in video games. These representations are the result of a complex design problem not solely limited to 3d graphical representations. In fact, every 3d city is a designed artefact, an outcome of a design process that shares many common points with the architectural design process. Four main characteristics of 3d cities in videogames have been identified and described, namely: interaction/gameplay, narrative, architectural and urban representations, and graphical representations. The study of 3d cities in video games can also let us reflect on and improve our real cities. This piece of writing is part of a larger project that intends to investigate aspects of video games that can bring innovative approaches and theories into architecture and related fields. A further aim of the work is to raise interest and awareness on the topic and generate further discussions.

summary Hygroscopically Actuated Granular Materials are a new class of designed granular materials in architecture. Granular materials are large numbers of particles that are only in loose contact with each other. If the individual particle in such a granular material is defined in its geometry and material make-up, one can speak of a designed granular material. In recent years these designed granular materials have been explored as architectural construction systems. Since the particles are not bound to each other, granular materials are rapidly reconfigurable and recyclable. Yet one of the biggest assets of designed granular materials is the fact that their overall behavior can be designed by altering the geometry or material make-up of the individual composing particles. Up until now mainly non-actuated granular materials have been investigated. These are designed granular materials in which the geometry of the particle stays the same over time. The proposed Hygroscopically Actuated Granular Materials are systems consisting of time-variable particle geometries. Their potential lies in the fact that one and the same granular system can be designed to display different mechanical behaviors over the course of time. The research presented here encompasses three case studies, which complement each other both with regard to the development of the particle system and the applied construction processes. All three cases are described both with regard to the methods used and the eventual outcome aiming at a potential design system for Hygroscopically Actuated Granular Materials. To conclude, these results are compared and directions of further research are indicated.

summary Despite his controversial political background, the leading architect of the Italian Rationalist Movement, Giuseppe Terragni, has attracted the attention of a large group of architectural scholars. He has often been acknowledged as an enigmatic figure whose architecture oscillated between classicism and modernism. This work offers formal generative analyses of the Mambretti Tomb and the Danteum, which are seen as the ‘quintessence’ of Terragni’s architecture. It provides a formal generation of these two projects in the form of parametric shape grammar. In doing so, this paper aims at unfolding the generative process of both projects in order to gain a deeper understanding into the ways that formal construction of Terragni’s architecture expresses meaning.

summary Researchers attempt to offer new design tools and technologies to support design process facilitating alternative visualization and representation techniques. This paper describes a comparison study that took place in the Department of Architecture, at the Istanbul Technical University between 2016-2017. We compare when architects designed mass volumes of buildings in an marker-based mobile Augmented Reality (AR) application with that of when they used a collaborative 3D Virtual World. The massing strategy in the AR environment was an additive approach that is to collaboratively design the small parts to make the whole. Alignment and arrangement of the parts were not the main concerns of the designers in AR, instead the functional development of the design proposal, bodily engagements with the design representation, framing and re-framing of the given context and parameters become the discussion topics.

summary The concept of entropy, which can be used to measure physical disorder, has been rediscovered by Shannon to measure the irregularity in information. Entropy measurements are made by considering one or more factors. Specific features such as color, shape, element type, height, material related with architectural compositions can be considered as factors and the amount of information carried by the building depending on one or more of these factors can be measured. In this study, it is questioned whether there is a relationship between entropy values of municipal building competition projects, which are measured in relation to the factors, and the building is considered successful by the competition jury. In order to conduct this examination, the entropy values of the projects, which respected to the same architectural program and won various awards in the project competitions were calculated. Before making comparisons, measurements were made according to solid-void ratios on the plan layout, the shapes of closed and discrete spaces, and the distribution of functions. A discussion was made on the usability of entropy method in the design phase, which gave solid and precise results according to the results of the comparisons.

summary This paper presents a design framework for free-form transformation of kinetic, spatial bar structures using computational design techniques. Spatial bar structures considered as deployable, transformable kinetic structures composed of straight, linear members, assembled in a three-dimensional configuration. They are often utilised in portable, mobile or transformable buildings. Transformable systems of spatial bar structures are mostly based on modification of primitive shapes (e.g. box, sphere, and cylinder). Each system is subdivided into multiple members having the same shape, the so-called kinetic blocks. Some diverse precedents made to develop other forms of transformation of these structures with some issues. This research project will investigate how a free-form transformation of spatial bar systems can be achieved, by redesigning the kinetic block in relation to architectural, technical parameters. In order to develop a physical prototype of the kinetic block, and assess its potential in enabling free-form transformation of a spatial bar system, a design framework incorporating parametric, algorithmic and kinetic design strategies is required. The proposed design workflow consists of three main phases: form-finding, stability validation and actuation.

summary This paper presents a research on adaptive kinetic structures using shape memory alloys as actuators. The target of the research is designing and building an efficient kinetic structural system that could be potentially applied at an architectural scale. The project is based on the study of tensegrity and pantograph structures as a starting point to develop multiple digital and physical models of different structural systems that can be controllably moved. The result of this design process is a performative prototype that is controllable through a web-based interface. The main contribution of this project is not any of the presented parts by themselves but the integration of all of them in the creation of a new adaptive system that allows us to envision a novel way of designing, building and experiencing architecture in a dynamic and efficient way.

summary Security planning is a vital part of the operation and management phase in a building’s life cycle. Ideally, this will be addressed during the building design phase. However, reality often differs from this ideal. In the real world, information such as floor plans tend to insufficiently describe or imperfectly match physical buildings, and must be surveyed and re-worked during security planning. Because of this, security companies require two kinds of staff: those in the security business and those in charge of planning, including floor plan verification. This research focused on creating an efficient way to help staff in this work environment develop a system of security planning for buildings and facilities using a rule-based approach in a tailormade CAD system. In this research, we developed a new 3D CAD system for desktops and mobile devices, which specializes in security planning using a game-engine. To avoid errors during security planning, a rule-based check system was developed and integrated into the CAD system. The rule-set of this rule base was built from the security planning manual, including guidelines on equipment layout and wiring in various situations, which could then be used in the development of an automated check. This research describes the method of system development and final results.

summary This paper uses a Space Syntax approach - a computational and mathematical method using graph-based measurements - to undertake a comparative assessment of the visibility properties of three architectural plans with unusual spatial requirements. Specifically, the method is used to compare the spatio-visual properties of an idealised plan for a residential aged-care facility with the actual plans used for two facilities. The purpose of this analysis is to begin to examine the ways in which syntactical values and isovist properties can be used to capture spatial and social characteristics of plans designed for the physical and cognitive needs of an ageing populace. The application of this approach seeks to support a better understanding of the relationship between spaces and their social properties in the design of aged-care facilities.
