summary Hydroassemblies is a research thesis that investigates the architectural potential of a unit-based modular system that can recursively grow in space guided by hydrodynamic principles in order to generate intricate tectonic assemblies, integrating the roles of spatial articulator, water collector/distributor and plant cultivation substrate to foster a symbiotic relation with the urban environment. By implementing principles of circulatory systems in biology, the authors developed a system that grows through recursive formation of loops and articulates its tectonic via a continuous, interconnected branching network. The founding process improves upon a combinatorial algorithm of discrete parts, considering how iterative interactions at the local level have a feedback impact on the growth process at the whole system scale. The paper explores how features, spatial and perceptive qualities, affordances and opportunities emerge at the global scale of the formation from the interplay of local behavioral principles and environmental conditions. The provided implementation is a proof of concept of the production of complex qualities by means of massive quantities of simple elements and interactions.

summary This paper presents a live and tested solution that enables home buyers to choose and customise their future homes in a web browser. It allows future owners and residents to configure and visualise their home in 3D but also keep it affordable by displaying the construction costs back to users in real-time. The proposed solution is analysed in the context of current housing market, excising web and BIM technologies and compared to currently available solutions. Additionally, we have been tracking visitor behaviour by using web analytics and can draw some conclusions about its performance.

summary This paper presents the experience of the first phase of remodeling existing historical and colonial district in Bandung, Indonesia, including existing building façade, streetscape and street furniture. Braga Street is chosen as study case because it is a well-known historical street in Bandung with art deco style buildings constructed during Dutch colonial era. By remodeling it, it could help stakeholders to evaluate existing Braga street condition, to test any modification of buildings along the street and to determine specific regulation for the street. In this case, we use Unity3D and Oculus Rift DK2 for remodeling current situation. We gathered feedback from respondents using a questionnaire given after they experienced the model in VR. Many lessons learned from modeling process and respondents' feedback: higher frame rate to make seamless VR experience by having all components on a low poly model and provide smoother movement to prevent visual discomfort. This paper's conclusion gives suggestions for anyone who want to start architecture modeling in virtual reality for the very first time and how to optimize it.

title Augmented Urban Experiences: Technologically Enhanced Design Research Methods for Revealing Hidden Qualities of the Built Environment

summary The built environment is a complex juxtaposition of static matter and dynamic flows, tangible objects and human experiences, physical realities and digital spaces. This paper offers an alternative understanding of those dichotomies by applying experimental design research strategies that combine objective quantification and subjective perception of urban contexts. The assumption is that layers of measurable datasets can be afforded with personal feedback to reveal "hidden" characteristics of cities. Drawing on studies from data and cognitive sciences, the proposed method allows us to analyze, quantify and visualize the individual experience of the built environment in relation to different urban qualities. By operating in between the scientific domain and the design realm, four design research experiments are presented. Leveraging augmenting and sensing technologies, these studies investigate: (1) urban attractors and user attention, employing eye-tracking technologies during walking; (2) urban proxemics and sensory experience, applying proximity sensors and EEG scanners in varying contexts; (3) urban mood and spatial perception, using mobile applications to merge tangible qualities and subjective feelings; and (4) urban vibe and paced dynamics, combining vibration sensing and observational data for studying city beats. This work demonstrates that, by adopting a multisensory and multidisciplinary approach, it is possible to gain a more human-centered, and perhaps novel understanding of the built environment. A lexicon of experimented urban situations may become a reference for studying different typologies of environments from the user experience, and provide a framework to support creative intuition for the development of more engaging, pleasant, and responsive spaces and places.

summary This work is the outcome of a multidisciplinary collaboration in the context of the VidiaLab (Laboratorio de Visualización Digital Avanzada). It proposes an application of interactive video mapping techniques as a form of experiencing the Fray Bentos industrial landscape, declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2015. An immersive environment was created by enriching a physical scale model of the site with projected digital images and information, providing new and attractive ways of interaction with the cultural heritage. Proposals for future work and educational applications of the developed tools are also discussed.

title From representational to parametric and algorithmic interactions: A panorama of Digital Architectural Design teaching in Latin America

summary This study focuses on the context of graphic representation technologies and digital design on Architectural teaching in Latin America. From categories proposed by Oxman and Kotnik and through a mapping study framed by a systematic review in CumInCAD database, it is presented a panorama of the state-of-art of the digital design on Architectural teaching in the region, between 2006 and 2015. The results suggest a context of coexistence of representational interaction and parametric interaction, as well as a transition from one to another and the emergence of the first experiments in algorithmic interaction. As this mapping shows an ongoing movement toward Digital Architectural Design in Latin America in the last decade, and points out its dynamics in space in time, it could contribute to strengthen a crowdthinking network on this issue in the region and with other continents.

summary Museums exhibit a growing development in the world, promoting buildings with significant expressions. Nevertheless, the relation of the building and its environmental performance is fundamental in the conception of new buildings. The problem originates in the early stages of design, where it is not possible to evaluate it environmentally. The methodology uses three art museum buildings in the humid subtropical climate of Brazil, whose geometries are completely different. After analyzing and relating its performance to its environmental and geometric characteristics a parametric modeling tool is proposed and the digital manufacture as a product of the process has been carried out.

summary The integration of building performance feedback in the design process is increasingly considered as a key aspect of the decision support framework that drives current high performance architecture, from early conception to fabrication. Although on other aspects of building performance there has been significant recent development on BPS integration in computational design, the integration of CFD is still largely unexplored, despite its significance in numerous design problems. This paper reviews the current state of advancement of integrated CFD simulation tools in computational design frameworks by evaluating three different integration approaches, each representing a different level of integration of CFD solvers within the commonly used computational design frameworks today. The objective of the study is neither to provide an extensive evaluation of all available CFD frameworks nor to assess the specific performance of the problem at hand, but rather to evaluate the potential and limitations of each integration approach from the perspective of the computational design user.

summary The increased need for optimization in design processes has led BIM software users to customize their projects by the use of programming and external applications. This paper presents the state of art of Revit plug-ins by means of an explorative, quantitative study of current repositories and the proposition of a categorization system to identify to which purposes the tools are being developed. Then, through a questionnaire to AEC professionals, assessment on the use and necessity of the tools is made by comparing the user experience with the proposed state of art categories.

summary Architects rely on the graphic language of words and art to bridge intention and design, just as it has always been. Yet, passing an idea or concept from mental imagery to design practice through 2D, 3D, and 4D design filters is especially challenging in BIM technology. Severe limitations hinder or even preclude BIMs use in certain complex design tasks, as identified in the Anti-Box, "The anti-box celebrates the death of the ninety-degree angle- in fact, every angle." (de Graaf 2017). Compatibility and constraints determine the most appropriate uses of BIM software, from designing mundane shopping mall developments to complex architectural engineering feats that stagger the imagination. BIM's main benefit is in the middle when it is creatively employed by professional architects in multi-discipline collaborations, well versed in symbolic representation, of designs conceived of multivalent design factors: narrative, form, function, multi-sensory access, materiality, space, and environment.

summary This research informs of a series of experimental design practices for the understanding computational glitches in architecture which appears to be equivalently a 'given' as well as an 'informed'. 'Glitch-space' is introduced to navigate the discussion through a spatial interpretation of digital decay. Currently glitches are only explored as forms of 2D art. We however, look to reconnect the underlying data to its digital architectural spatial form. Our methodology a systematic iterative process of transformational change to explore design emergence on the base of computational glitches. A numerical data driven process is explored using decayed files which are turned into 3D formal expressions. In this context, stereoscopic techniques are experimented, helping understand further how glitch can be performed within a 3D virtual environment. Ultimately we explore digital architectural form existing solely in the digital realm that confidently expresses glitch in both its design process and aesthetic outcome. Thus, our research intends to bring a level of authenticity with the notion of 'glitch-space' by discussing 3D interpretations of glitch in an architectural form.

summary The use of ornament in public space has been contested throughout history, and attitudes towards the articulation of building surfaces have shifted over time. Antoine Picon has argued that the use of ornament to communicate meaning and identity is returning to a place of cultural prominence. Well-established digital design and fabrication technologies have given rise to projects that integrate performance and aesthetics through the exploitation of form, pattern and ornament. These techniques allow the designer to inscribe and overlay data generated through performance simulation and environmental analysis, and formal relationships and fabrication processes onto materials and spatial fields, creating novel configurations and effects. Operating at a scale between object and building, public art, sculpture and architectural ornament allow for a particular type of interdisciplinary experimentation and hybrid practice. Three recent public art proposals illustrate an approach that composites multiple datasets to generate new relationships between aesthetic, environmental and functional considerations in order to activate public space. The proposals presented here put forward a set of tactics that can be deployed towards embedding overlapping data in public spaces. These proposals use pattern to form and form to pattern workflows as a way to produce multiple potential readings through pareidolia. This paper presents an investigation into how contemporary digital design and fabrication processes can bridge between performance and perception, and how ornament and pattern might be deployed for both formal and performative purposes to help foster a more personalized relationship with the urban spaces we occupy.

summary Gesture-based natural interfaces necessitate research into gestures that are intuitive for designers and effective for natural interaction. Intuitive knowledge is significant for conceptual design as it reduces time taken to complete tasks and improves usability of products. In a previously conducted experiment, we elicited gestures for 3D CAD modeling tasks for conceptual architectural design. In this study, we present a preliminary analysis of intuitiveness scores of gestures and evaluators’ ratings to analyze which gestures were more intuitive and effective for CAD manipulation tasks. Results show that gestures with high intuitive scores were not necessarily rated as effective by evaluators and that bimanual symmetric gestures consistently scored high for both intuitiveness and effectiveness. Based on our findings we give recommendations for the design of gesture-based CAD modeling systems for single and multiple users.

summary In the current context, access to daily realities is becoming increasingly mediated and processed by maps, flooding us with spatial data that appears to be objective but needs to be questioned, or even disputed. On the other hand, there are some relevant aspects of the urban experience that elude the main maps provided by apps or big data visualizing projects. So this article points out alternative ways of mapping urban information in this context, by means of presenting and discussing the methodology and results of a mapping workshop carried out at a German university in 2017 with interdisciplinary groups of students. The aim was to provide new insights and readings of the contemporary city. We explored and invented the urban with a mix of creative research methods.

summary Building on the understanding of music and architecture as creators of spatial experience, this paper presents a novel way of unfolding music’s spatial qualities in the physical world. Spaces That Perform Themselves arose as an innovative response to the current relationship between sound and space, where we build static spaces to contain dynamic sounds. What if we change the static parameter of spaces and start building dynamic spaces to contain dynamic sounds? This project combines architectural theories with musical mastery and computation to create an environment as kinetically undulant and emotionally varied as music itself. To achieve this, a multisensory kinetic room is built in order to augment our sonic perception through a cross-modal spatial choreography that combines sound, spatial movement, light, color and vibration. By breaking down boundaries between disciplines, the possibilities of a new type of architectural typology that morphs responsively with a musical piece can be explored. As a result, spatial and musical composition can exist as one synchronous entity. Spaces That Perform Themselves seeks to contribute a novel perspective to the discourse on leveraging today’s technology to provide a setting to enrich and augment the way we relate with the built environment. This project’s objective is to enhance our perception and challenge models of thinking by presenting a post-humanistic phenomenological encounter of the world.

summary The paper discusses the intersection of two main agendas for Chilean governments that are BIM (Building Information Modeling) and BEAM (Building Environmental Assessment Methods). It shows the state-of-the-art in both fields in Chile as well as in the world, it discusses some previous efforts of integration; it found some new opportunities for collaboration and finally proposes a new framework that brings together BIM and BEAM. The development of the method includes BIM Models, databases and spread sheets for building energy Certification, it finally provides a semi-automatic environment where architects model their design in BIM and this Information is used as an input to the certification process. Potentials and risk of this method are discussed.

summary The work compiles several academic and Research initiatives, and aims to establish a right link between two agendas that governments, AEC industry and academia normally handle separated, this is BIM (Building Information Modeling) and Wood. By running several literature reviews, interviews and software tests, the state-of-the-art was reached in both fields; several cases linking BIM and wood are shown and discussed. It can be concluded that both fields have several commons processes and also that many cases have used just a few BIM tools, disregarding a big potential of these methodologies.

summary The relationship between clay manufacturing and architectural design has a long trajectory that has been explored since the early 2000s. From a 3D printing or assembly perspective, using clay in combination with automated processes in architecture to achieve computational design solutions is well established. (Yuan, Leach & Menges, 2018). Craft-based clay art, however, still lacks effective computational design integration. With the improvement of Augmented Reality (AR) technologies (Driscoll et al., 2017) and the appearance of digital platforms, new opportunities to integrate clay manufacturing and computational design have emerged. The concept of digitally transferring crafting skills, using holographic guidance and machine learning, could make clay crafting accessible to more workers while creating the potential to share and exchange digital designs via an open-source manufacturing platform. In this context, this research project explores the potential of integrating computational design and clay crafting using AR. Moreover, it introduces a platform that enables AR guidance and the digital transfer of fabrication skills, allowing even amateur users with no prior making experience to produce complex clay components.
