summary We present an auto-parameterisation tool, implemented in Python, that takes in a semantic model, in CityGML format, and outputs a parametric model. The parametric model is then used for design optimisation of solar availability and urban ventilation potential. We demonstrate the tool by parameterising a CityGML model regarding building height, orientation and position and then integrate the parametric model into an optimisation process. For example, the tool parameterises the orientation of a design by assigning each building an orientation parameter. The parameter takes in a normalised value from an optimisation algorithm, maps the normalised value to a rotation value and rotates the buildings. The solar and ventilation performances of the rotated design is then evaluated. Based on the evaluation results, the optimisation algorithm then searches through the parameter values to achieve the optimal performances. The demonstrations show that the tool eliminates the need to set up a parametric model manually, thus making optimisation more accessible to designers.

summary We present a workflow to automatically generate semantic 3D city models from conceptual massing models. In the workflow, the massing design is exported as a Collada file. The auto-conversion method, implemented as a Python library, identifies city objects by analysing the relationships between the geometries in the Collada file. For example, if the analysis shows that a closed poly surface satisfies certain geometrical relationships, it is automatically converted to a building. The advantage of this workflow is that no extra modelling effort is required, provided the designers are consistent in the geometrical relationships while modelling their massing design. We will demonstrate the feasibility of the workflow using three examples of increasing complexity. With the success of the demonstrations, we envision the utoconversion of massing models into semantic models will facilitate the sharing of city models between domain-specific experts and enhance communications in the urban design process.

summary The presence of web2.0 and traceable mobile devices creates new opportunities for urban designers to understand cities through an analysis of user-generated data. The emergence of “big data” has resulted in a large amount of information documenting daily events, perceptions, thoughts, and emotions of citizens, all annotated with the location and time that they were recorded. This data presents an unprecedented opportunity to gauge public opinion about the topic of interest. Natural language processing with social media is a novel tool complementary to traditional survey methods. In this paper, we validate these methods using tourism data from Trip-Advisor in Andorra. “Natural language processing” (NLP) detects patterns within written languages, enabling researchers to infer sentiment by parsing sentences from social media. We applied sentiment analysis to reviews of tourist attractions and restaurants. We found that there were distinct geographic regions in Andorra where amenities were reviewed as either uniformly positive or negative. For example, correlating negative reviews of parking availability with land use data revealed a shortage of parking associated with a known traffic congestion issue, validating our methods. We believe that the application of NLP to social media data can be a complementary tool for urban decision making.

summary Direct solar access and daylight requirements contribute significantly when it comes to shaping the layout and appearance of contemporary cities. Urban planning regulations in Estonia set the minimum amount of direct solar access that existing housing has the right to receive and new premises are required to get when new developments are built. The solar envelope and solar collection methods are used to define the volume and shape of new buildings that allow the due solar rights to the surrounding buildings, in the case of the former, and the portion of the own façades that receive the required direct solar access, in the case of the latter. These methods have been developed over a period of several decades, and present-day CAAD and environmental analysis software permits the generation of solar envelopes and solar collection isosurfaces, although they suffer from limitations. This paper describes an advanced method for generating solar collection isosurfaces and presents evidence that it is significantly more efficient than the existing method for regulation in Estonia’s urban environments.

summary The ongoing rate of urbanization in China is the motivator behind this paper. As a response to the observed monotonous housing developments in Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) and elsewhere our method exploits Cellular Automata (CA) combined with fitness evaluation algorithms to explore speculatively the potential of existing developments and respective building regulations for increased density and diversity through an automated design algorithm. The well-known Game of Life CA is extended from its original 2-dimensional functionality into the realm of three dimensions and enriched with the opportunity of resizing the involved cells according to their function. Moreover our method integrates an earlier technique of constrcuctivists namely the “social condenser” as a means of diversifying functional distribution within the Cellular Automata as well as solar radiation as requested by the existing building regulation. The method achieves a densification of the development from 31% to 39% ratio of footprint to occupied volume whilst obeying the solar radiation rule and offering a more diverse functional occupation. This proof of concept demonstrates a solid approach to the automated design of housing developments at an urban scale with a ,yet limited, evaluation procedure including solar radiation which can be extended to other performance criteria in future work.

summary Computational visual simulations are extremely useful and powerful tools for decision-making. The use of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) has become a common phenomenon due to real-time and interactive visual simulation tools in architectural and urban design studies and presentations. In this study, a demonstration is performed to integrate Structure from Motion (SfM) into VR and AR. A 3D modeling method is explored by SfM under realtime rendering as a solution for the modeling cost in large-scale VR. The study examines the application of camera parameters of SfM to realize an appropriate registration and tracking accuracy in marker-less AR to visualize full-scale design projects on a planned construction site. The proposed approach is applied to plural real architectural and urban design projects, and results indicate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

summary The built environment is a complex juxtaposition of static matter and dynamic flows, tangible objects and human experiences, physical realities and digital spaces. This paper offers an alternative understanding of those dichotomies by applying experimental design research strategies that combine objective quantification and subjective perception of urban contexts. The assumption is that layers of measurable datasets can be afforded with personal feedback to reveal "hidden" characteristics of cities. Drawing on studies from data and cognitive sciences, the proposed method allows us to analyze, quantify and visualize the individual experience of the built environment in relation to different urban qualities. By operating in between the scientific domain and the design realm, four design research experiments are presented. Leveraging augmenting and sensing technologies, these studies investigate: (1) urban attractors and user attention, employing eye-tracking technologies during walking; (2) urban proxemics and sensory experience, applying proximity sensors and EEG scanners in varying contexts; (3) urban mood and spatial perception, using mobile applications to merge tangible qualities and subjective feelings; and (4) urban vibe and paced dynamics, combining vibration sensing and observational data for studying city beats. This work demonstrates that, by adopting a multisensory and multidisciplinary approach, it is possible to gain a more human-centered, and perhaps novel understanding of the built environment. A lexicon of experimented urban situations may become a reference for studying different typologies of environments from the user experience, and provide a framework to support creative intuition for the development of more engaging, pleasant, and responsive spaces and places.

summary Recently there has been a significant growth on the usage of personal fitness applications running on smart phones or fitness devices. These applications record millions of GPS points generated from the paths of runners. This data can be analyzed to comprehend behavior of runners within a specific location. In this study, using data generated from several sources such as Endomondo and Strava and other complementary data such as climate data, population data etc., we aim to find out the factors affecting running behavior in urban settings. For this purpose, visualizations of running activities are plotted with different variables by using BIG-DID, a software tool we developed as part of this study. Additionally, an evaluation of the tools used or can be used for data analysis and visualizations discussed. Finally, a linear regression model is introduced, which will be further developed in later stages of this study.

summary This article discusses the methodology and results of the Maslow’s Palace workshops project, which engages with current debates surrounding the democratisation of digital urban design technology and stakeholder decision making, through the implementation of a speculative oriented approach to serious gaming. The research explores how serious games might be used to help marginalised communities consider past, future and present community experiences, reconcile dissimilar assumptions, generate social capital building and design responses and prime participants for further long-term design engagement processes through a new approach called Speculative Participatory Serious Urban Gaming. Empirical material for this research was gathered from a range of case study workshops prepared with three landfill-based communities and external partners throughout 2017. Results show the approach helped participants develop shared norms, values and collective understandings of sensitive topics and develop ideas for future action through ‘collective tinkering.

summary New technologies and uncontrolled open-data policies lead public to a new way of approaching the built environment. To enlarge the competences of the professionals that work within the cities, we believe that providing a deep and dynamic knowledge on the heritage and urban built environment is the more effective solution to offer a unique support to the needs. By providing a boosted geographical database with detailed information about the status of each building, we aim to support the professional by providing a neat vision about vacant buildings available citywide. We think this knowledge is an important asset in covering every kind of public requests: from flat to rent to an abandoned building to restore or to drive better investors. The city of Trento will be the pilot project to test these statements.We studied the phenomenon of pushing new constructions rather investing on the reuse of abandoned buildings with the consequences of unsustainable land use. To address the work we adopted a comprehensive approach across the fields of urbanism, ICT engineering and social sciences. We believe that sharing knowledge and know-hows with municipalities, agencies, and citizens is the way to support better market strategies as well as urban transformation policies.

summary To ensure access to sunlight in urban planning, specialized software is available. Mainly used in the initial stages, these tools allow the study of the environmental performance of the proposal. However, neighborhood impact is seen as a secondary aspect, usually evaluated with GIS tools, simulating pre-existing or proposed situations. However, visual programming tools allow, data processing in addition to parametric modeling, streamlining the process of analysis of architectural and urban pre-existences and proposals. From a case study, we present a methodology that uses these tools to demonstrate the loss of daylight performance of open spaces due to urban densification.

summary Beginning from a provocation in Auguste Blanqui’s Eternity by the Stars, this paper reports on a new methodology of digital collage for urban design. The research is situated relative to the current discourses surrounding both voxelization and point-cloud data structures in order to motivate the concept of a recombinant approach to design in existing cities. Building on these sources, and with reference to recent developments in mesh shape composition techniques, the paper presents the resulting software implementation “Point-Cloud-Paint”: a tool that enables collage-based combinatorial experimentation with urban point-cloud data.

summary Hydroassemblies is a research thesis that investigates the architectural potential of a unit-based modular system that can recursively grow in space guided by hydrodynamic principles in order to generate intricate tectonic assemblies, integrating the roles of spatial articulator, water collector/distributor and plant cultivation substrate to foster a symbiotic relation with the urban environment. By implementing principles of circulatory systems in biology, the authors developed a system that grows through recursive formation of loops and articulates its tectonic via a continuous, interconnected branching network. The founding process improves upon a combinatorial algorithm of discrete parts, considering how iterative interactions at the local level have a feedback impact on the growth process at the whole system scale. The paper explores how features, spatial and perceptive qualities, affordances and opportunities emerge at the global scale of the formation from the interplay of local behavioral principles and environmental conditions. The provided implementation is a proof of concept of the production of complex qualities by means of massive quantities of simple elements and interactions.

summary In this study we show how Call Detail Record (CDR) can be used to better understand the travel patterns of visitors. We show how Origin-Destination (OD) Interactive Maps can provide transportation information through CDR. We then use aggregation of CDR to show the differences between the travel patterns of visitors from different countries and of different lengths of stay. We also show that visitors move differently during event periods and non-event periods, reflecting the importance of real-time data available by CDR. From CDR, we can gain more detailed and complete information about how tourists move compared to traditional surveys, which can be used to aid smarter transportation systems and urban resource planning.

summary Modern design of urban forms is venturing towards performative, site-specific architecture that are formed according to the attributes of its urban context. Parametric modelling techniques offer designers the ability to embed generative mechanisms into the design process to allow performance based design. This paper focuses on the development of a synthesis model that generates an Urban Form schema using computational design principles. The design system illustrates a rule-based systematic approach to urban form generation and is a precursor to the automatic exploration of urban forms based on design analytics and evaluation of urban metrics. The role of the architect begins to shift from the designer of objects to the designer of processes with urban planning following a trajectory of data-generated and contextual specific design.

summary City environment is very much determined by the design of its streets and in particular by the design of its cross section. This paper shows a street cross section design interface where designs are controlled by an ontology and a parametric design system. The system keeps its semantic structure through the ontology and provides a design interface that understands the computer interaction needed by the urban designer. Real time visual analytics are used to support the design decision process, allowing designers to objectively compare designs and measure the differences between them, in order to make informed decisions.

summary The use of daylight for the inhabitants health and comfort purposes and for the energy efficiency of buildings influences significantly the shape and outlook of urban environments. The solar envelope and solar collection surface are methods to define the massing of buildings for direct solar access requirements. They have been recently improved to be used in the design of buildings in relation to the Estonian daylight standard. Nevertheless the solar collection method can be applied only to single buildings with simple shape. The present research investigates the direct solar access performance of building clusters with multiple layouts in different urban areas in the city of Tallinn. Result show that different patterns perform in significant different ways whereas the same cluster types have the best and the least performances in all the cases.

summary In emerging countries there is a need for rapid urban planning, since they are confronted by unprecedented wave of urbanization. This need is even bigger since usually there is no adequate number of professional educated urban planners in these countries. Therefore, we investigate in this paper how to develop a set of methods that allow to generate urban fabric semi-automatically. The challenge is to come up with a generative planning model that adapts to multiple boundary conditions.Through a modular design strategy generative methods are applied by students in an urban design studio in order to combine them into more complex planning strategies for small cities in the emerging country of Ethiopia. The modular approach allows to break down planning into sub-issues to better deal with the overarching problem. For testing the implemented generative urban design strategies various cities are generated at different locations in Ethiopia with various topographic situations. Their underlying design strategies and modular approach are discussed in this paper.
