summary The construction industry faces numerous challenges related to productivity, sustainability, and meeting global demands (Hatoum and Nassereddine 2020; Carra et al. 2018; Barbosa, Woetzel, and Mischke 2017; Bock 2015; Linner 2013). In response, the automation of design and construction has emerged as a promising solution. In the past three decades, researchers and innovators in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) fields have made significant strides in automating various aspects of building construction, utilizing computational design and robotic fabrication processes (Dubor et al. 2019). However, synthesizing innovation in automation encounters several obstacles. First, there is a lack of an established venue for information sharing, making it difficult to build upon the knowledge of peers. First, the absence of a well-established platform for information sharing hinders the ability to effectively capitalize on the knowledge of peers. Consequently, much of the research remains isolated, impeding the rapid dissemination of knowledge within the field (Mahbub 2015). Second, the absence of a standardized and unified process for automating design and construction leads to the individual development of standards, workflows, and terminologies. This lack of standardization presents a significant obstacle to research and learning within the field. Lastly, insufficient training materials hinder the acquisition of skills necessary to effectively utilize automation. Traditional in-person robotics training is resource-intensive, expensive, and designed for specific platforms (Peterson et al. 2021; Thomas 2013).

summary One of the problems in teaching students how to design kinetic architecture is the difficulty of helping them grasp concepts like motion, physical computing and fabrication, concepts not generally dealt with in conventional architectural projects. In this paper, we introduce a pedagogical method for better utilizing prototyping and explore the role prototyping plays in learning and conceptualizing design ideas. Our method is based on building the learner’s sensory experience through iteration and focusing on the process as well as the product. Specifically, our research attempts to address the following questions: How can architecture students anticipate and feel motion while they design kinetic prototypes? How do their prototypes enable them to explore design ideas? As a case study, we applied our methodology in an 8-week workshop in a fabrication laboratory in Cairo, Egypt. The workshop was open to young architects and students who had completed at least four semesters of study at the university. We describe the pedagogical approach we developed to build the sensory experience of making motion, and demonstrate the basic setting and stages of the workshop. We show how a cyclical learning process, based on perception and action -- copying and iteration -- contributed to the students’ learning experience and enabled them to create and improvise on their own.

summary Several research projects (Gramazio et al. 2014; Willmann et al. 2015; Helm et al. 2017; Adel et al. 2018; Adel Ahmadian 2020) have investigated the use of automated assembly technologies (e.g., industrial robotic arms) for the fabrication of nonstandard timber structures. Building on these projects, we present a novel and transferable process for the robotic fabrication of bespoke timber subassemblies made of off-the-shelf standard timber elements. A nonstandard timber structure (Figure 2), consisting of four bespoke subassemblies: three vertical supports and a Zollinger (Allen 1999) roof structure, acts as the case study for the research and validates the feasibility of the proposed process.

summary The construction sector is responsible for a big share of the global energy, resource demand and greenhouse gas emissions. As such, buildings and their designers are key players for carbon mitigation actions. Current research in digital fabrication is beginning to reveal its potential to improve the sustainability of the construction sector. To evaluate the environmental performance of buildings, life cycle assessment (LCA) is commonly employed. Recent research developments have successfully linked LCA to CAD and BIM tools for a faster evaluation of environmental impacts. However, these are only partially applicable to digital fabrication, because of differences in the design process. In contrast to conventional construction, in digital fabrication the geometry is the consequence of the definition of functional, structural and fabrication parameters during design. Therefore, this paper presents an LCA-based method for design-integrated environmental assessment of digitally fabricated building elements. The method is divided into four levels of detail following the degree of available information during the design process. Finally, the method is applied to the case study "Mesh Mould", a digitally fabricated complex concrete wall that does not require any formwork. The results prove the applicability of the method and highlight the environmental benefits digital fabrication can provide.

summary The built environment is a complex juxtaposition of static matter and dynamic flows, tangible objects and human experiences, physical realities and digital spaces. This paper offers an alternative understanding of those dichotomies by applying experimental design research strategies that combine objective quantification and subjective perception of urban contexts. The assumption is that layers of measurable datasets can be afforded with personal feedback to reveal "hidden" characteristics of cities. Drawing on studies from data and cognitive sciences, the proposed method allows us to analyze, quantify and visualize the individual experience of the built environment in relation to different urban qualities. By operating in between the scientific domain and the design realm, four design research experiments are presented. Leveraging augmenting and sensing technologies, these studies investigate: (1) urban attractors and user attention, employing eye-tracking technologies during walking; (2) urban proxemics and sensory experience, applying proximity sensors and EEG scanners in varying contexts; (3) urban mood and spatial perception, using mobile applications to merge tangible qualities and subjective feelings; and (4) urban vibe and paced dynamics, combining vibration sensing and observational data for studying city beats. This work demonstrates that, by adopting a multisensory and multidisciplinary approach, it is possible to gain a more human-centered, and perhaps novel understanding of the built environment. A lexicon of experimented urban situations may become a reference for studying different typologies of environments from the user experience, and provide a framework to support creative intuition for the development of more engaging, pleasant, and responsive spaces and places.

summary Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) as an integrated field between architecture and sociology has created practical guidelines for evaluating indoor human behavior within a built environment. This research builds on recent attempts to integrate datafication and machine learning into POE practices that may one day assist Building Information Modeling (BIM) and multi-agent modeling. This research is based on two premises: 1) that the proliferation of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology allows us to collect a building user’s data cost-effectively and 2) that the growing application of machine learning algorithms allows us to process, analyze and synthesize data efficiently. This study illustrates that the mobile platform HalO can serve as a generic tool for datafication and automation of data analysis of the movement of a building user. In this research, the iOS mobile application HalO, combined with BLE beacons enable building providers (architects, developers, engineers and facility managers etc.) to collect the user’s indoor location data. Triangulation was used to pinpoint the user’s indoor positions, and k-means clustering was applied to classify users into different gathering groups. Through four research procedures—Design Intention Analysis, Data Collection, Data Storage and Data Analysis—the visualized and classified data helps building providers to better evaluate building performance, optimize building operations and improve the accuracy of simulations.

summary The imperative need for complex geometries in architecture is driving innovation towards an unconstrained fabrication freedom in building components. Fabrication constraints are a critical obstacle when material efficiency through complex, optimized topologies is sought. To address this constraint, this research investigates the use of 3D printed plastic formwork for fibre reinforced concrete at large scale. This novel construction method makes complex topologies and precise details possible for full-scale, load bearing structures. To demonstrate its potential applications, SkelETHon —a functional four-meter-long concrete canoe— was designed, built and raced in a regatta on the Rhine river (Figure 1).

summary Thousands of online virtual experiments are being developed by hundreds of National Virtual Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers run by top universities in China. According to an analysis on the existing VR technologies accessible in market and the conditions of domestic universities, a "bounded adoption" strategy was raised by Tongji University, when it dealing with a daily teaching context. It puts the manpower and financial resources into the design of virtual experiments, so-called 'contents building', rather than equipment purchasing as before. After three new experiments built, an evaluation on their contributions to learning performance is conducted immediately, which tries to understand whether the strategy works and how to move on. As one of these experiments, learning a historic Chinese temple in an online way is compared with other four learning methods from traditional ways to hybrid ways. The result indicates that the VR technologies applied with the "bounded adoption" strategy have a positive coherence to high learning performance, especially in form oriented recognition task, which plays a key role in architectural education. Meanwhile, the current design of virtual task involving building process has to be improved.

summary This paper presents Opossum, a new optimization plug-in for Grasshopper, a visual data-flow modelling software popular among architects. Opossum is the first publicly available, model-based optimization tool aimed at architectural design optimization and especially applicable to problems that involve time-intensive simulations of for example day-lighting and building energy. The paper details Opossum's design and implementation and compares its performance to four single-objective and one multi-objective solver. The test problem is time-intensive and simulation-based: optimizing a screened façade for daylight and glare. Opossum outperforms the other single-objective solvers and finds the most accurate approximation of the Pareto front.

summary This paper explores the process of digital materialization through robotic fabrication techniques by presenting three wooden projects. The analysis of the case studies is oriented to underline the impact that computation had on architectural construction due to its methodological and instrumental innovations over the last decades. The absorption of computing and digital fabrication logics within the discipline is explored from either an architectural point of view and from the improvements related to automation of the constructive process. On the one hand the case studies are caught because of the desire to expand material complexity and, on the other hand because of the integration with other technological systems. The narrative allows gathering pros and cons in three different investigative macro areas: material culture, methodological oversights, and operative setbacks coming from digital machine and communicational constraints. This analytical investigation helps the definition of a new pathway for future researches, looking forward the assimilation of digital materiality learning in building construction.

summary Analyzing the success rate of the building process, it emerges that it is an industrial sector that lacks efficiency. Nevertheless, during decades the trend was to compare and bring into contact manufacturing management procedures vis-?-vis the building industry. But, whilst a manufacturing product is essentially a standard object produced in a controlled environment, a building is a prototype in itself. To bridge this gap research on Artificial Intelligence was conducted, so as to move from the traditional trial-and-error process to the simulation approach, defining in a virtual environment results of design and management choices before the real application, thus mitigating risks. To attain these results, a prototype was developed based on the Hybrid Actor Agent approach. The Agents, governed by their rules, behaviors and goals, define actions while Actors manage communication among them. The Network intertwined among these Agent/Actor systems is capable of stratifying knowledge based on the success rate of the choices made. summary This paper proposes and examines a new way of cooperation between human workers and machine intelligence in architectural scale construction. For the transfer of construction information between the physical and digital world, mature technologies such as Radio Frequency IDentifier (RFID), and emerging technologies like Augmented Reality (AR) are used in parallel to supplement each other. Dynamic data flow is implemented to synchronize digital and physical models by following the ID signatures of individual building parts. The contributions of this paper includes the demonstration of current technological limitations, and the proposal of a hybrid system between human and computer, which is tested in order to explore the possibilities of digitally enhanced construction methods.

summary The gradual rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and its increasing visibility among many research disciplines affected Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAAD). Architectural deep learning (DL) approaches are being developed and published on a regular basis, such as retrieval (Sharma et al. 2017) or design style manipulation (Newton 2019; Silvestre et al. 2016). However, there seems to be no method to evaluate highly constrained spatial configurations for specific architectural domains (such as housing or office buildings) based on basic architectural principles and everyday practices. This paper introduces an automatic constraint-based consistency checker to evaluate the coherency of semantic spatial configurations of housing construction using a small set of design principles to evaluate our DL approaches. The consistency checker informs about the overall performance of a spatial configuration followed by whether it is open/closed and the constraints it didn't satisfy. This paper deals with the relation of spaces processed as mathematically formalized graphs contrary to existing model checking software like Solibri.

summary This paper demonstrates a workflow converting terrestrial laser scan (TLS) data into an interactive virtual reality (VR) platform. A VR exhibition prototype of Lincoln Cathedral was created to validate the established workflow in terms of the technical and visual performance, usability, and functionality. It combined TLS data and storytelling to produce a shareable platform, inviting opportunities for public engagement, and to facilitate custodians with the tools to maintain the building’s heritage. The paper discusses the use of open sourcesoftware and suggests future work.

summary New technologies and uncontrolled open-data policies lead public to a new way of approaching the built environment. To enlarge the competences of the professionals that work within the cities, we believe that providing a deep and dynamic knowledge on the heritage and urban built environment is the more effective solution to offer a unique support to the needs. By providing a boosted geographical database with detailed information about the status of each building, we aim to support the professional by providing a neat vision about vacant buildings available citywide. We think this knowledge is an important asset in covering every kind of public requests: from flat to rent to an abandoned building to restore or to drive better investors. The city of Trento will be the pilot project to test these statements.We studied the phenomenon of pushing new constructions rather investing on the reuse of abandoned buildings with the consequences of unsustainable land use. To address the work we adopted a comprehensive approach across the fields of urbanism, ICT engineering and social sciences. We believe that sharing knowledge and know-hows with municipalities, agencies, and citizens is the way to support better market strategies as well as urban transformation policies.

summary Digital fabrication has transformed the way buildings are constructed by applying methods such as friction-fit connection. This technique has been propagated by WikiHouse which aims to develop open building technologies to different environmental contexts. However, the indiscriminate use of the model may result in inefficiency of housing performance. This work, therefore, investigates solutions for adapting WikiHouses to the tropics, according to principles proposed by Armando de Holanda in ‘A Guide to Build in Northeast Brazil’. Nevertheless, difficulties related to certain adaptations were observed such as connections compatibility and design of large open spaces, especially because these systems depend on a maximum size of parts.

summary This paper presents the research development for a base structural module for the Casa Nordeste project. Casa Nordeste is a compact housing experiment that will participate in the Solar Decathlon Latin America competition. It consists of a modular building that houses living, cooking, and sanitizing space. Developments presented are based on digital design and fabrication principles and processes, through algorithms that allow its customization. In this sense, discussions begin with a brief theoretical discussion about the concepts that underline the project: evolutionary housing; digital technologies that improve design and construction; open source construction and generative design systems. The paper finalizes by presenting and discussing developments of three different design aspects of the structural module: (a) geometry of the frames, (b) its modulation, and (c) fittings and joining mechanisms.

summary The paper presents research on how Building Information Modelling (BIM) can be applied comprehensively throughout the design of an architectural project. A practical method based on BIM models that help to deal with multidisciplinary issues by integrating the design information from different sources, collaborators and project stages is formulated by adopting existing available tools. The ‘Tiantian Square’ building project in Wuhan, China combines a subway station with a commercial hug. According to the project’s size and complexity, our study focuses on the multiple cooperation of professionals from different backgrounds, including the departments of architectural design, structure (civil engineering), HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning), water supply and drainage, and electrics and sustainable design. Our paper presents how the BIM model bridges between various simulation platforms through our technical system and management, including steps of transformation, simplification, analysis, reaction and improvement. Our research has helped to improve the overall efficiency and quality of the project. We generated a successful analysis-design approach for the initial design stages, which does not require in-depth analysis. It is a practical method to immediately evaluate the performance for each design alternative and provide guidelines for design modification. Finally, we discuss how the coordination of different department becomes a crucial factor as we look forward to a more open, communicative and inter-relational design and development process.
