summary Reciprocal Frame Structures (RF) have broad application potentials. Flexible to using small available materials, they span large areas, including varied curvature and doubly-curved forms. Although not many buildings using RF have been constructed to date, records indicate RF efficiencies where timber was widely used in structures predating modern construction. For reasons of adaptability and economy, advances in computation and fabrication precipitated increase in research into RF structures as a contemporary architectural typology. One can observe that linear timber such as rods and bars feature in extensive RF research. However, interest in planar RF has only recently emerged in research. Hence one can argue that planar RF provides depth to explore new design possibilities. This paper contributes to the growing knowledge of planar RF by presenting a design project that demonstrates an approach in notching systems to explore design and structural performance. The design project, the developed design workflow, fabrication, assembly and evaluation are discussed in this paper.

summary Adaptive lighting technologies and control of lighting by users provide new possibilities for lighting design in the context of knowledge work environments. In our research project, we study innovation supporting knowledge work environments and their features, such as lighting. In this paper, we present and reflect the design of a pilot intervention, where the use of adaptive lighting was tested. We discuss how different forms of data and knowledge can be applied as a rationale for adaptive lighting behaviour which as an ambient feature in office environment supports knowledge workers' well-being and supports different working situations. In addition, we present the data-based evaluation methods with which we could gain feedback from users' experiences and their way of using the lighting and the pilot office environment. The potential of this kind of real-world data for future design processes is discussed.

title Non-Linear Matters: Auxetic Surfaces

summary Auxetic structures exhibiting non-linear buckling are a prevalent research topic in the material sciences due to the ability to tune their reversible actuation, porosity, and negative Poisson’s ratio. However, the research is limited to feature sizes at scales below 10 mm2, and to date, there are no available efficient design and prototyping methods for architectural designers. Our study develops design principles and workflow methods to transform standard materials into auxetic surfaces at an architectural scale. The auxetic behavior is accomplished through buckling and hinging by subtracting from a homogeneous material to create perforated patterns. The form of the perforations, including shape, scale, and spacing, determines the behavior of multiple compliant "hinges" generating novel patterns that include scaling and tweening transformations. An analytical method was introduced to generate hinge designs in four-fold symmetric structures that approximate non-linear buckling. The digital workflow integrates a parametric geometry model with non-linear finite element analysis (FEA) and physical prototypes to rapidly and accurately design and fabricate auxetic materials. A robotic 6-axis waterjet allowed for rapid production while maintaining needed tolerances. Fabrication methods allowed for spatially complex shaping, thus broadening the design scope of transformative auxetic material systems by including graphical and topographical biases. The work culminated in a large-scale fully actuated and digitally controlled installation. It was comprised of auxetic surfaces that displayed different degrees of porosity, contracting and expanding while actuated electromechanically. The results provide a promising application for the rapid design of non-linear auxetic materials at scales complimentary to architectural products.

summary Acoustical design is one of the most challenging aspects of architecture. A complex system of competing influences (e.g., space geometry, size, proportion, material properties, surface detail, etc.) contribute to shaping the quality of the auditory experience. In particular, architectural surfaces affect the way that sound reflections propagate through space. By diffusing the reflected sound energy, surface designs can promote a more homogeneous auditory atmosphere by mitigating sharp and focused reflections. One of the challenges with designing an effective diffuser is the need to respond to a wide band of sound wavelengths, which requires the surface profile to precisely encode a range of detail sizes, depths and angles. Most of the available sound diffusers are designed to respond to a narrow band of frequencies. In this context, fractal-based surface designs can provide a unique opportunity for mitigating such limitations. A key principle of fractal geometry is its multilevel hierarchical order, which enables the same pattern to occur at different scales. This characteristic makes it a potential candidate for diffusing a wider band of sound wavelengths. However, predicting the reflection patterns of complicated fractal-based surface designs can be challenging using available acoustical software. These tools are often costly, complicated and are not designed for predicting early sound propagation paths. This research argues that writing customized algorithms provides a valuable, free and efficient alternative for addressing targeted acoustical design problems. The paper presents a methodology for designing and testing a customized algorithm for predicting sound diffusion patterns of fractal-based surfaces. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were used to develop the code and evaluate the results.

summary Today, 98% of megaprojects face cost overruns or delays. The average cost increase is 80% and the average slippage is 20 months behind schedule (McKinsey 2015). It is becoming increasingly challenging to efficiently support the scale, complexity and ambition of these projects. Simultaneously, project data is being captured at growing rates. We continue to capture more data on a project than ever before. Total data captured back in 2009 in the construction industry reached over 51 petabytes, or 51 million gigabytes (Mckinsey 2016). It is becoming increasingly necessary to develop new ways to leverage our project data to better manage the complexity on our projects and allow the many stakeholders to make better more informed decisions. This paper focuses on utilizing advances in data mining, data analytics and data visualization as means to extract project information from massive datasets in a timely fashion to assist in making key informed decisions for project delivery. As part of this paper, we present an innovative new use of these technologies as applied to a large-scale infrastructural megaproject, to deliver a set of over 4,000 construction documents in a six-month period that has the potential to dramatically transform our industry and the way we deliver projects in the future. This paper describes a framework used to measure production performance as part of any project’s set of project controls for accelerated project delivery.

summary Recently there has been a significant growth on the usage of personal fitness applications running on smart phones or fitness devices. These applications record millions of GPS points generated from the paths of runners. This data can be analyzed to comprehend behavior of runners within a specific location. In this study, using data generated from several sources such as Endomondo and Strava and other complementary data such as climate data, population data etc., we aim to find out the factors affecting running behavior in urban settings. For this purpose, visualizations of running activities are plotted with different variables by using BIG-DID, a software tool we developed as part of this study. Additionally, an evaluation of the tools used or can be used for data analysis and visualizations discussed. Finally, a linear regression model is introduced, which will be further developed in later stages of this study.

summary Design space catalogs, which present a collection of different options for selection by human designers, have become commonplace in architecture. Increasingly, these catalogs are rapidly generated using parametric models and informed by simulations that describe energy usage, structural efficiency, daylight availability, views, acoustic properties, and other aspects of building performance. However, by conceiving of computational methods as a means for fostering interactive, collaborative, guided, expert-dependent design processes, many opportunities remain to improve upon the originally static archetype of the design space catalog. This paper presents developments in the areas of interaction, automation, simplification, and visualization that seek to improve on the current catalog model while also describing a vision for effective computer-aided, performance-based design processes in the future.

summary The research presented in this paper seeks to examine how architecture and computational tools can be used to communicate on multiple levels by incorporating a series of qualitative and quantitative measures as criteria for a spatial and architectural design. Air is taken as a material that has the capacity to create boundaries, yet unless under extreme conditions often remains invisible. Varying in qualities such as temperature, humidity and pollution, the status of air is highly local to a particular context. The research explores how rendering air visible through an architectural intervention made of networked sentient prototypes can be used in the reation of a responsive outdoor public space. Although humans' ability to perceive and respond to stimuli is highly advanced, it is nevertheless limited in its spectrum. Within the urban context specifically, the information, material and flux being produced is becoming ever more complex and incomprehensible. While computational tools, sensors and data are increasingly accessible, advancements in the fields of cognitive sciences and biometrics are unraveling how the mind and body works. These developments are explored in tandem and applied through a proposed methodology. The project aims to negotiate the similarities and differences between humans and machines with respect to the urban environment. The hypothesis is that doing so will create a rich output, irreducible to a singular reading while heightening user experience and emphasizing a sense of place.

summary Analyzing the results of multi-objective optimization and building performance simulation can be a very tedious process that requires navigating between different software and tools. There is a clear scarcity in visualization tools that combine methods for big data analysis and design decision support tools that integrate detailed information for each design and parameter. Having a single visualization tool that provides methods to both visualize and analyze a large amount of data, understand the relation between objectives and variables, and having the ability to compare and analyze the preferred designs thoroughly can support the process of design decision making. In this paper, previous attempts to develop better data visualization tools for both integrated building simulation and optimization outputs were analyzed, then guidelines and a visualization tool prototype that can be effective in decision making and analyzing multi-objective optimizations results was presented.

summary The understanding of space relies on motion, as we experience space by crossing it in time, space’s fourth dimension. However, architects lack the necessary tools to incorporate people's motion into their design of space. As a consequence, architects fail to connect space with the motion of the people that inhabit their buildings, creating disorienting environments. Further, what if augmentation technology changes how we inhabit space and the static built environment does not fit people anymore? This paper explores the problem of developing a model from people's motion, to inform and augment the architecture design process in the early stages. As an outcome, I have designed a model based on data from human-space interaction obtained through field work. First, relevant behavior was identified and recorded. Second, a metric was extracted from the data and composed by speed, the 4th D dimension as time, and gestures. Third, the original behavior was rebuilt, producing a set of rules. The rules were combined to form the model of human-space interaction. This generalizable model provides a novel approach to designing space based on data from people. Moreover, this paper presents a means of incorporating inhabitants' behavior into digital design. Finally, the model contributes to the advancement of people's motion research for general applications, such as in transport engineering, robotics, and cognitive sciences.

summary The aim of this paper is to expose the preliminary results of a research about local landscape perception for students in a rural school. The proposed methodology implies an analysis and elaboration of landscape maps, regarding the use of new technologies in order to understand them. This work was done through remote visualization tools to determinate landscape parameters and other necessary inputs to evaluate the incidence of digital tools on students perception. Digital photographs, drone flights and interactive platforms are also applied as innovative tools to navigate and understand landscape from different scales and approaches.

summary Researchers attempt to offer new design tools and technologies to support design process facilitating alternative visualization and representation techniques. This paper describes a comparison study that took place in the Department of Architecture, at the Istanbul Technical University between 2016-2017. We compare when architects designed mass volumes of buildings in an marker-based mobile Augmented Reality (AR) application with that of when they used a collaborative 3D Virtual World. The massing strategy in the AR environment was an additive approach that is to collaboratively design the small parts to make the whole. Alignment and arrangement of the parts were not the main concerns of the designers in AR, instead the functional development of the design proposal, bodily engagements with the design representation, framing and re-framing of the given context and parameters become the discussion topics.

summary In South Korea, the changing paradigm of family composition toward single-person households and nuclear families has caused the decrease in number of students, which has led to the need for change in the qualitative, rather than quantitative, management of spaces and facilities on university campuses. In particular, since 2005, the merging of universities have accelerated, which has brought up the need for a system that facilitates the management of integrated university systems. Accordingly, universities now require efficient system operation based on three-dimensional and data visualization, unlike the document-based management of facilities and spaces in the past. Users lack a sense of responsibility for public facilities, causing difficulties such as energy waste and frequent movement, as well as damage and theft of goods. This study aims to form an AR-based interface using the ANPR algorithm, a computer vision technique, and the position-based data of the GPS. It also aims to build a campus space management system to overcome the limitations of current systems and to effectively and systematically manage integrated building data. In addition, for module test verification, the prototype is applied to actual campus spaces, and additional demands for campus space management in the AR application are identified and organized.

summary Parametric associative logic can describe complex design scenarios but are typically non-trivial and time consuming to develop. Optimization is being widely applied in many fields to find high-performing solutions to objective design needs, and this is being extended further to include user input to satisfy subjective preferences. However, whilst conventional optimization approaches can set good parameters for a model, they cannot currently improve the underlying logic defined by the associative topology of the model, leaving it limited to predefined domain of designs. This work looks at the application of Cartesian Genetic Programming (CGP) as a method for allowing the automatic generation, combination and modification of valid parametric models, including topology. This has value as it allows for a much greater range of solutions, and potentially computational "creativity," as it can develop unique and surprising solutions. However, the application of a genome-based definition and evolutionary optimization, respectively, to describe parametric models and develop better models for a problem, introduce many unknowns into the model generation process. This paper explains CGP as applied to parametric design and investigates the difference between using mating, mutating and both strategies together as a way of combining aspects of parent models, under selection by a genetic algorithm under random, objective and user (Interactive GA) preferences. We look into how this effects the resultant overiterated interaction in relation to both the geometry and the parametric model.

summary The change of the building morphology directly affects the surrounding environment, while the evaluation of these environment data becomes the main basis for the genetic iterations of the building morphology. Indeed, due to the complexity of the outdoor natural ventilation, multiple factors in the site could be the main reasons for the change of air flow. Thus, the architect is suggested to take the wind environment as the main morphology generation factor in the early stage of the building design. Based on the research results of 2017 DigitalFUTURE Wind Tunnel Visualization Workshop, a novel self-form-finding method in design infancy has been proposed. This method uses Arduino to carry out the dynamic design of the building model, which can not only connect the sensor to monitor the wind environment data, but also contribute the building model to correlate with the wind environment data in real time. The integration of the Arduino platform and the physical wind tunnel can create the possibility of continuous and real-time physical changes, data collection and wind environment simulation, using quantitative environmental factors to control building morphology, and finally achieve the harmony among the building, environment and human.

summary In this study, an Augmented Reality (AR) system is developed to be used for visualizing design projects of buildings. In such design projects, it is desirable to enable design stakeholders visualizing the outcomes of different design options to reduce the resistance and hesitation towards new design challenges. The research proposes an outdoor mark-er-less AR using Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) for the AR tracking. Our proposed system performs reconstruction and localization steps in real-time, as opposed to similar methods in which the reconstruction step is done offline. A case study has been performed for a de-sign scenario of buildings. The case study verified the performance of visualization and tracking.

summary This paper proposes a novel design space model that can be used in applications of generative space planning in architecture. The model is based on a novel data structure that allows fast subdivision and merge operations on planar regions in a floor plan. It is controlled by a relatively small set of input parameters and evaluated for performance using a set of congestion metrics, which allows it to be optimized by a metaheuristic such as a genetic algorithm (GA). The paper also presents a set of guidelines and methods for analyzing and visualizing the quality of the model through low-resolution sampling of the design space. The model and analysis methods are demonstrated through an application in the design of an exhibit hall layout. The paper concludes by speculating on the potential of such models to disrupt the architectural profession by allowing designers to break free of common "heuristics" or rules of thumb and explore a wider range of design options than would be possible using traditional methods.

summary This paper discusses about soundscape notation possibilities and structures a methodology for representing urban sounds based on game engine technology. Recently, new forms of sound visualization and auralization techniques have emerged within the research fields of Soundscape and Noise Pollution studies. The development of digital media, such as game engines, introduced new forms of audiovisual 3d representations, combining geometry and sound in a structured interactive computational space. This paper addresses these novel methods of representation and reflects upon their contribution for soundscape studies through an ongoing study case.

summary BIM technology is currently being implemented in the construction industry, though it is still underdeveloped in relation to Facility Management (FC) of extant buildings. There is a strong potential for future development due to the visualization and data analysis capabilities of this technology, amongst others (Becerik-Gerber, Jazizadeh, Li, & Calis, 2012). This research investigates how BIM can be implemented in existing buildings currently in operation. Using a public facility at the University of Bio-Bio as a case study, conclusions are drawn with respect the capabilities of BIM in order to optimize maintenance and operation of existing buildings.
