summary The use of "digital technology" - computer software, new material application, rapid prototyping, Computer Aided Manufacturing, Virtual Reality, collaborative design - is no longer a novel and innovative aspect of architectural design. In fact, many offices and architects use a varied mix of these technologies in their daily practice. We can observe that digital technology has become a mature part of architectural practice. In this paper, we want to outline an outstanding level of excellence in the use of digital technologies that enable certain widely acknowledged offices (for example Foster and Partners, UN Studio, BIG, and so on) to take their design work to high degree of quality and performance. We call this level and phenomenon "digital leadership." Digital leadership goes beyond technical digital skills. It is an integrated and holistic approach that makes no distinction between "architectural design" and "digital technology" and in fact creates a new blend of both. We propose that digital leadership has six key areas: Technological Ecologies; Creativity, Knowledge Processes, and Experimentation; Design and Research; Human Resources and Leadership; Collaborative and Explorative Environments and Impact of Digital Leadership. These are discussed in more detail in this paper.

Disciplines & Disruption initiates a dialog about the state of the discipline of architecture and the impact of technology in shaping or disrupting design, methods and cultural fronts. For the past 30 years, distinctive advancements in technologies have delivered unprecedented possibilities to architects and enabled new expressions, performance, materials, fabrication and construction processes. Simultaneously, digital technology has permeated the social fabric around architecture with broad influences ranging from digital preservation to design with the developing world. Driven by technological, data and material advances, architecture now witnesses the moment of disruption, whereby formerly distinct areas of operation become increasingly connected and accessible to architecture's sphere of concerns in ways never before possible. summary As the result of the demolishing decision of Humberto Perea was generated, a Seminar- Workshop on CG at Universidad del Norte with the purpose of evaluate his heritage´s modern movement in Barranquilla. The Seminar´s objective was to design a methodology for documenting the building through technologies: CG and mixed realities. The methodology contents two parts; First, the building incorporated into the context with previous to the demolition and with architectural survey. And second part was developed with the Seminar - Workshop and Immersive Virtual Reality. As conclusion was demonstrated that any heritage building can be documenting to be used by researchers.

summary Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality research in the architecture field show a variety of possible uses of systems to accompany designers, laymen and decision makers in their architectural design process. This article provides a survey of VR and AR devices among a corpus of papers selected from conferences and journals on CAAD (Computer Aided Architectural Design). A closer look at some specific research projects highlights their potentials and limits, which formalize milestones for future challenges to address. Identifying advantages and drawbacks of those devices gave us insights to propose an alternative type of system, CORAULIS, including both VR and SAR technologies, in order to support collaborative design to be implemented in a pedagogical environment.

summary It has been proposed that, after the internet age, we are now entering a new era of the '/Augmented Age/' (King, 2016). Physician Michio Kaku imagined the future of architects will be relying heavily on Augmented Reality technology (Kaku, 2015). Augmented reality technology is not a new technology and has been evolving rapidly. In the last three years, the technology has been applied in mainstream consumer devices (Coppens, 2017). This opened up possibilities in every aspect of our daily lives and it is expected that this will have a great impact on every field of consumer's technology in near future, including design and fabrication. What is the future of design and making? What kind of new digital fabrication paradigm will emerge from inevitable technological development? What kind of impact will this have on the built environment and industry? FlowMorph is a research project developed in the Bartlett School of Architecture, B-Pro AD with the collaboration of the authors and students as a 12 month MArch programme, we developed a unique design project trying to answer these questions which will be introduced in this paper.

summary This paper examines the potential of utilizing virtual mock-ups in end user involvement processes. To access if virtual mock-ups can optimize existing processes, current workflows using physical full-scale mock-ups on several projects are explored. Requirements regarding the traditional workflows are captured through a series of interviews and observational studies. The identified use hereof is then analyzed and consolidated into system requirements and visions of a potential virtual supplement. Based on the identified requirements, a live prototype is developed supporting multiuser experiences in interactive environments through multiple and various devices such as CAVEs, HMD´s and touch devices supporting multi touch co-creation. Finally, the prototype is tested together with end users in ongoing projects to validate the potential of virtual mock-ups and to further detail the requirements to such a system.

summary Security planning is a vital part of the operation and management phase in a building’s life cycle. Ideally, this will be addressed during the building design phase. However, reality often differs from this ideal. In the real world, information such as floor plans tend to insufficiently describe or imperfectly match physical buildings, and must be surveyed and re-worked during security planning. Because of this, security companies require two kinds of staff: those in the security business and those in charge of planning, including floor plan verification. This research focused on creating an efficient way to help staff in this work environment develop a system of security planning for buildings and facilities using a rule-based approach in a tailormade CAD system. In this research, we developed a new 3D CAD system for desktops and mobile devices, which specializes in security planning using a game-engine. To avoid errors during security planning, a rule-based check system was developed and integrated into the CAD system. The rule-set of this rule base was built from the security planning manual, including guidelines on equipment layout and wiring in various situations, which could then be used in the development of an automated check. This research describes the method of system development and final results.

summary This paper focus on the development and evaluation of a computer tool that enriches physical scale models of buildings, which are commonly used during architecture and civil engineering design processes. The main goal of this work is to enable designers, namely architects, to use the affordances of the physical scale models, by enhancing them with digital characteristics that can be easily changed, allowing an enriched interaction of the designer with such models. Our in-house developed Augmented Reality tool, referred to as ARch4models, augments the user experience with visual features and interactive capabilities, not possible to accomplish with physical models (see this video in https://goo.gl/5zbdTQ). The tool allows the coherent registration between the real and the digital in the same space. Satisfaction evaluation studies were conducted that have shown that ARch4models improves the building design process when compared with a traditional methodology employing solely physical scale models.

summary Additive manufacturing techniques and materials have evolved rapidly during the last decade. Applications in architecture, engineering and construction are getting more attention as 3D printing is trying to find its place in the industry. Due to high material prices for metal 3d printing and in-homogenous material behaviour in printed plastic, 3D printing has not yet had a very significant impact at the scale of buildings. Limitations on scale, cost, and structural performance have also hindered the advancement of the technology and research up to this point. The research presented here takes a case study for the application of 3D printing at a furniture scale based on a novel custom optimisation approach for structural nodes. Through the concentration of non-standard geometry on the highly complex custom optimised nodes, 3D printers at industrial product scale could be used for the additive manufacture of the structural nodes. This research presents a design strategy with a digital process chain using parametric modeling, virtual prototyping, structural simulation, custom optimisation and additive CAD/CAM for a digital workflow from design to production. Consequently, the digital process chain for the development of structural nodes was closed in a holistic manner at a suitable scale.

summary The paper presents research on how Building Information Modelling (BIM) can be applied comprehensively throughout the design of an architectural project. A practical method based on BIM models that help to deal with multidisciplinary issues by integrating the design information from different sources, collaborators and project stages is formulated by adopting existing available tools. The ‘Tiantian Square’ building project in Wuhan, China combines a subway station with a commercial hug. According to the project’s size and complexity, our study focuses on the multiple cooperation of professionals from different backgrounds, including the departments of architectural design, structure (civil engineering), HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning), water supply and drainage, and electrics and sustainable design. Our paper presents how the BIM model bridges between various simulation platforms through our technical system and management, including steps of transformation, simplification, analysis, reaction and improvement. Our research has helped to improve the overall efficiency and quality of the project. We generated a successful analysis-design approach for the initial design stages, which does not require in-depth analysis. It is a practical method to immediately evaluate the performance for each design alternative and provide guidelines for design modification. Finally, we discuss how the coordination of different department becomes a crucial factor as we look forward to a more open, communicative and inter-relational design and development process.

summary The paper explores the use of in-house developed self-reconfigurable modular robotic system in civil construction activities and investigates a concept where an arbitrary Civil Engineering structure or a daily use industrial product are self-assembled from a number of self-reconfigurable composite blocks. The system extends current range of modular robot systems (mDrs) where autonomous modules self-assemble into a wide variety of forms. However, contrary to conventional mDrs, MoleMOD has not mechatronic actuating parts permanently fixed to each individual module. The MoleMOD actuators are separable and operate inside the modules, tight them together or relocate them to required configuration. It significantly reduces number of expensive mechatronics parts and the environment the actuators operate. Although MoleMOD focuses on architecture, it can take over other mDrs tasks as research and rescue. This paper describes properties, advantages, foreseen applications, and basic design specifications of the second generation prototype.

Two lightweight 3D digitally knitted fabric canopy structures composed of responsive tubular and cellular components employ recycled textiles, photo-luminescent and solar active yarns that absorb and store UV energy, change color, and emit light. This environment offers spaces of respite, exchange, and engagement as a 150 x 75-foot misting system responds to visitors’ proximity, activating fabric stalactites that produce a refreshing micro-climate. Families of robotically prototyped and woven recycled spool chairs provide seating throughout the courtyard. The canopies are digitally fabricated with over 1,000,000 yards of high tech responsive yarn and are supported by three 40+ foot tensegrity towers and the surrounding matrix of courtyard walls. Material responses to sunlight as well as physical participation are integral parts of our exploratory approach to the 2017 YAP brief. The project is mathematically generated through form-finding simulations informed by the sun, site, materials, program, and the material morphology of knitted cellular components. Resisting a biomimetic approach, [Lumen] employs an analogic design process where complex material behavior and processes are integrated with personal engagement and diverse programs. The comprehensive installation was designed by Jenny Sabin Studio and fabricated by Shima Seiki WHOLEGARMENT, Jacobsson Carruthers, and Dazian with structural engineering by Arup and lighting by Focus Lighting.

title Robotic Formwork in the MARS Pavilion: Towards The Creation Of Programmable Matter

summary The proliferation of parametric tools has allowed for the design of previously impossible geometry, but the construction industry has failed to keep pace. We demonstrate the use of industrial robots to disrupt the ancient process of casting concrete and create an adjustable formwork capable of generating various cast components based on digital input, crafting a new approach to “programmable matter.” The resulting research delineates a novel methodology to facilitate otherwise cost-prohibitive, even impossible design. The MARS Pavilion employs this methodology in a building-sized proof of concept where manipulating fabric with industrial robots achieves previously unattainable precision while casting numerous connective concrete components to form a demountable lattice structure. The pavilion is the result of parametric form finding, in which a catenary structure ensures that the loads are acting primarily in compression. Every concrete component is unique, yet can be assembled together with a 1/16-inch tolerance. Expanding Culver & Sarafian’s previous investigations, industrial robot arms are sent coordinates to position fabric sleeves into which concrete is poured, facilitating a rapid digital-to-physical casting process. With this fabrication method, parametric variation in design is cost-competitive relative to other iterative casting techniques. This digital breakthrough necessitated analogue material studies of rapid-setting, high-strength concrete and flexible, integral reinforcing systems. The uniquely shaped components are coupled with uniform connectors designed to attach three limbs of concrete, forming a highly stable, compressive hex-grid shell structure. A finite element analysis (FEA) was a critical step in the structural engineering process to simulate various load scenarios on the pavilion and drive the shape of the connective elements to their optimal form.

summary This paper presents the outline and the achieved results of an experimental study developed to understand the differences on how close architecture spaces with distinct geometric characteristics at contour level, including rounded, curvilinear and sharp, rectilinear elements, are perceived and evaluated. In order to do so, eighteen virtual reality architecture spaces were evaluated by thirty-two test-subjects according to like/dislike aesthetic judgments. As expected, the tested subjects showed a higher level of preference for spaces with rounded, curvilinear contour elements. On another way, when the level of space curvature was high, considering the whole space surface and not only the contour of plan transitions, the level of preference decreased significantly. These results support the idea that rounded, curvilinear elements are interpreted as being more pleasant and preferred than sharp, rectilinear ones and create new knowledge on the how the levels of such preference are more accurate for moderate rather than radical curvature rates.

summary The integration of building performance feedback in the design process is increasingly considered as a key aspect of the decision support framework that drives current high performance architecture, from early conception to fabrication. Although on other aspects of building performance there has been significant recent development on BPS integration in computational design, the integration of CFD is still largely unexplored, despite its significance in numerous design problems. This paper reviews the current state of advancement of integrated CFD simulation tools in computational design frameworks by evaluating three different integration approaches, each representing a different level of integration of CFD solvers within the commonly used computational design frameworks today. The objective of the study is neither to provide an extensive evaluation of all available CFD frameworks nor to assess the specific performance of the problem at hand, but rather to evaluate the potential and limitations of each integration approach from the perspective of the computational design user.

summary With the use of the concept Central Activities Zone in the Shanghai City Master Plan (2017-2035) to replace the traditional concept of Central Business District, core areas such as Shanghai Lujiazui will be given more connotations in the future construction and development. In the context of todays continuous urbanization and high-speed capital flow, how to identify the development status and vitality characteristics is a prerequisite for creating a high-quality Central Activities Zone. Taking Shanghai Lujiazui sub-district etc. as an example, the vitality value of weekday and weekend as well as 19 indexes including density of functional facilities and building morphology is quantified by obtaining multi-source big data. Meanwhile, the correlation between various indexes and the vitality characteristics of the Central Activities Zone are tried to summarize in this paper. Finally, a neural network regression model is built to bridge the design scheme and vitality values to realize the prediction of the vitality of the Central Activities Zone. The data analysis method proposed in this paper is versatile and efficient, and can be well integrated into the urban big data platform and the City Information Modeling, and provides reliable reference suggestions for the real-time evaluation of future urban construction.

summary Architecture models are an essential component of the development process and enable a physical representation of virtual designs. In addition to the conventional methods of model production using the machining of models made of wood, metal, plastic or glass, a number of additive manufacturing processes are now available. These new processes enable the additive manufacturing of architectural models directly from CAAD or BIM data. However, the boundary conditions applicable to the ability to manufacture models with additive manufacturing processes must also be considered. Such conditions include the minimum wall thickness, which depends on the applied additive manufacturing process and the materials used. Moreover, the need for the removal of support structures after the additive manufacturing process must also be considered. In general, a change in the scale of these models is only possible at very high effort. In order to allow these restrictions to be adequately incorporated into the CAAD model, this contribution develops a parametrized CAAD model that allows such boundary conditions to be modified and adapted while complying with the scale. Usability of this new method is illustrated and explained in detail in a case study. In addition, this article addresses the additive manufacturing processes including subsequent post-processing.

summary The recent trend toward non-standard and free form architecture has generated a lot of debate among the Scientific Community. The reasons can be found in the renewed interest in organic shapes, in addition to recent and powerful capabilities of parametric platforms. In this regard, the Visual Programming Language (VPL) interface gives a high level of freedom and control for conceiving complex shapes. The geometric problems in identifying a suitable shape have been addressed by relying on the study of Origami. The control of variable geometry has required the use of algorithmic models that ensure fast changes and free control of the model, besides a physical one made of rigid cardboard to simulate its rigid-foldability. The aim is to present a prototype of an adaptive structure, with an acoustic application, to control sound quality and perception in spaces where this has a central role, such as theatres or concert halls.
