summary This paper presents a method for translating physical interaction with design objects into parametric relationships. A framework of the method is created to automate the generation of parametric equations as modeling constraints. The prototypes developed for this work link digital models with their physical counterparts to create a hybrid and tangible interface that enables user interaction. The prototypes investigate linear and non-linear types of object relationships for creating parametric models. The results demonstrate a novel approach in architectural design that assists users in creating complex geometric relationships through intuitive interaction.

summary Gesture-based natural interfaces necessitate research into gestures that are intuitive for designers and effective for natural interaction. Intuitive knowledge is significant for conceptual design as it reduces time taken to complete tasks and improves usability of products. In a previously conducted experiment, we elicited gestures for 3D CAD modeling tasks for conceptual architectural design. In this study, we present a preliminary analysis of intuitiveness scores of gestures and evaluators’ ratings to analyze which gestures were more intuitive and effective for CAD manipulation tasks. Results show that gestures with high intuitive scores were not necessarily rated as effective by evaluators and that bimanual symmetric gestures consistently scored high for both intuitiveness and effectiveness. Based on our findings we give recommendations for the design of gesture-based CAD modeling systems for single and multiple users.

title Representing the Aesthetics of Richard Meier’s Houses Using Building Information Modeling

summary Beyond its widespread use for representing technical aspects and matters of building and construction science, Building information modeling (BIM) can be used to represent architectural relationships and rules drawn from aesthetic theory. This research suggests that BIM provides not only vocabulary but also syntactical tools that can be used to capture an architectural language. In a case study using Richard Meier’s language for single-family detached houses, a BIM template has been devised to represent the aesthetic concepts and relations therein. The template employs parameterized conceptual mass objects, syntactical rules, and a library of architectonic elements, such as walls, roofs, columns, windows, doors, and railings. It constrains any design produced using the template to a grammatically consistent expression or style. The template has been used as the starting point for modeling the Smith House, the Douglas House, and others created by the authors, demonstrating that the aesthetic template is general to many variations. Designing with the template to produce a unique but conforming design further illustrates the generality and expressiveness of the language. Having made the formal language explicit, in terms of syntactical rules and vocabulary, it becomes easier to vary the formal grammar and concrete vocabulary to produce variant languages and styles. Accordingly, this approach is not limited to a specific style, such as Richard Meier's. Future research can be conducted to demonstrate how designing with BIM can support stylistic change. Adoption of this approach in practice could improve the consistency of architectural designs and their coherence to defined styles, potentially increasing the general level of aesthetic expression in our built environment.

summary Algorithmic design allows architects to design using a programming-based approach. Current algorithmic design environments are based on existing computer-aided design applications or building information modeling applications, such as AutoCAD, Rhinoceros 3D, or Revit, which, due to their complexity, fail to give architects the immediate feedback they need to explore algorithmic design. In addition, they do not address the current trend of moving applications to the cloud to improve their availability. To address these problems, we propose a software architecture for an algorithmic design integrated development environment (IDE), based on web technologies, that is more interactive than competing algorithmic design IDEs. Besides providing an intuitive editing interface which facilitates programming tasks for architects, its performance can be an order of magnitude faster than current algorithmic design IDEs, thus supporting real-time feedback with more complex algorithmic design programs. Moreover, our solution also allows architects to export the generated model to their preferred computer-aided design applications. This results in an algorithmic design environment that is accessible from any computer, while offering an interactive editing environment that integrates into the architect’s workflow.

title Assisted automation: Three learning experiences in architectural robotics

summary Fueled by long-standing dreams of both material efficiency and aesthetic liberation, robots have become part of mainstream architectural discourses, raising the question: How may we nurture an ethos of visual, tactile, and spatial exploration in technologies that epitomize the legacies of industrial automation—for example, the pursuit of managerial efficiency, control, and an ever-finer subdivision of labor? Reviewing and extending a growing body of research on architectural robotics pedagogy, and bridging a constructionist tradition of design education with recent studies of science and technology, this article offers both a conceptual framework and concrete strategies to incorporate robots into architectural design education in ways that foster a spirit of exploration and discovery, which is key to learning creative design. Through reflective accounts of three learning experiences, we introduce the notions “assisted automation” and “robotic embodiment” as devices to enrich current approaches to robot–human design, highlighting situated and embodied aspects of designing with robotic machines.

summary Design tools like Grasshopper are often used to either generate novel forms, to automate certain design processes or to incorporate scientific factors. However, any Grasshopper definition has certain assumptions about design and space built into it from its earliest genesis, when the initial algorithm is set out. Correspondingly, implicit theoretical positions are built into definitions, and therefore its results. Approaching parametric design as a question of architectural, landscape architectural or urban design theory allows the breaking down of traditional boundaries between the technical and the historical or theoretical, and the way parametric design, and urban design history & theory, can be conveyed in the teaching environment. Once the boundaries between software and history & theory are transgressed, Grasshopper can be a way of testing the principles embedded in historical designs and thus these two disciplines can be joined. In urban design, there is an inherent clash between an ideal model and existing urban geography or morphology, and also between formal (qualitative) and numerical (quantitative) aspects. If a model provides a necessary vision for future development, an existing topography then results from the continuous human and natural modifications of a territory. To explore this hypothesis, the “Urban Design Representation” subject in the Master of Urban Design program at the University of Cape Town taught in 2017 & 2018 was approached “parametrically” from these two opposite, albeit convergent, starting points: the conceptual/rational versus the physical/empiric representations of a territory. In this framework, Grasshopper was used to represent typical standards and parameters of modern urban planning (for example, Floor/Area Ratio, height and distance between buildings, site coverage, etc), and a typological approach was adopted to study and “decode” the relationship between public and private space, between the street, the block and topography, between solids and voids. This methodology permits a cross-comparison of different urban design models and the immediate evaluation of their formal outputs derived from parametric data.

summary This paper explores the pedagogical context for the inclusion of daylight and wind simulation as part of architectural design-studio teaching. The author describes both challenges as well as opportunities encountered by architecture students who applied high-end technology for optimizing environmental conditions during the conceptual design of a residential project within a thirteen week studio. Students located their projects in an inner urban context in a 'Temperate' climate zone, meaning that they had to account for hot conditions in summer while considering wind-chill factors in winter. Based on the studio experience, the paper scrutinizes how students tackled Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and daylight analysis on different scales of their project. The paper explores how the engagement with latest tools available to architecture students changes their ability to discuss building physics with engineers and question precedence typology. The author describes the pedagogical challenges when helping architecture students to overcome obstacles in communicating engineering aspects inherent to the design process.

summary This paper presents an algorithmic framework proposal for implementation of a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) in architectural design process. Different than the previous studies, we introduce a dynamic and extendible modular framework for multiple objectives. The objective modules with different fitness functions are connected simultaneously in the Rhino/Octopus interface, after multiplication with a constant value or a variable. In this study, we discuss the potentials and limitations of MOGA in 3D form generation, implications of MOGA in a case study and the qualitative and quantitative changes in relation to the change of constant value/ the impact ratio of competing objectives. The outcomes of the case study are investigated based on its potentiality in providing feedback in the earlier phases of decision processes in design.

title Generalised cyclidic nets for shape modelling in architecture

summary The aim of this article is to introduce a bottom-up methodology for the modelling of free-form shapes in architecture that meet fabrication constraints. To this day, two frameworks are commonly used for surface modelling in architecture: non-uniform rational basis spline modelling and mesh-based approaches. The authors propose an alternative framework called generalised cyclidic nets that automatically yield optimal geometrical properties for the envelope and the structural layout, like the covering with planar quadrilaterals or hexagons. This framework uses a base circular mesh and Dupin cyclides, which are natural objects of the geometry of circles in space, also known as Mo?bius geometry. This article illustrates how complex curved shapes can be generated from generalised cyclidic nets. It addresses the extension of cyclidic nets to arbitrary topologies with the implementation of a ‘hole-filling’ strategy and also demonstrates that this framework gives a simple method to generate corrugated shells.

title Computer utterances: Sequence and event in digital architecture

summary Barely a month before the end of World War II, a technical report begun circulating among allied scientists: the ‘First Draft of a Report on the EDVAC’, attributed to John von Neumann, described for the first time the design and implementation of the earliest stored-program computer. The ‘First Draft’ became the template followed by subsequent British and American computers, establishing the standard characteristics of most computing machines to date. This article looks at how the material and design choices described in this report influenced architecture, as it set up the technological matrix onto which a discipline relying on a tradition of drawn geometry would be eventually completely remediated. It consists of two parts: first, a theoretical section, analysing the repercussions for architecture of the type of computer laid out in the ‘First Draft’. Second, a description of a design experiment, a sort of information furniture, that tests and exemplifies some of the observations from the first section. This experiment examines the possibilities of an architecture that, moving beyond geometric representations, uses instead the programming of events as its rationale. The structure of this article reflects a methodology in which theoretical formulation and design experiments proceed in parallel. The theoretical investigation proposes concepts that can be tested and refined through design and conversely design work determines and encourages technical, critical and historical research. This relation is dialogical: theoretical investigation is not simply a rationalisation and explanation of earlier design work; inversely, the role of design is not just to illustrate previously formulated concepts. Both design and theorisation are interdependent but autonomous in their parallel development.

summary Recently, there are significant developments in artificial intelligence using advanced machine learning algorithms such as deep neural networks. These new methods can defeat human expert players in strategy-based board games such as Go and video games such as Breakout. This paper suggests a way to incorporate such advanced computing methods into architectural design through introducing a simple conceptual design project inspired by computational interpretations of wasps' collective constructions. At this stage, the paper's intent is not to introduce a practical and fully finished tool directly useful for architectural design. Instead, the paper proposes an example of a program that can potentially become a conceptual framework for incorporating such advanced methods into architectural design.

summary This paper presents an exploration of movement as a design material to evidence human-machine interaction in an architectural space. An autonomous robotic vehicle with environmental sensory capabilities interacts kinetically with people by recognizing their emotional states from their body postures. A drawing device installed in the vehicle leaves a trace on the floor as a material testimony to the mutual dynamics. The complex yet surprisingly intuitive choreographic interaction of the machine and its social and physical environment blurs the boundaries between drawing, machine, and performance. In general, the project conceptualizes movement as a design material, drawing as a performative action, and social interaction as a physical force, all of which can be enhanced or mediated by digital technologies to produce results with aesthetic value.

title A personal space in the Web. Bases, processes and evaluation of a collaborative digital design experience for significant learning

summary We live constantly networked, performing multiple activities in virtual spaces which are intertwined with physical space, shaping an augmented and symbiotic chronotope. Considering that personal space is an area surrounding individuals that provides a framework for developing activities wouldn’t it be necessary to count on a virtual personal space? This article presents the bases, processes, and results of a didactic experience which purpose was to imagine and design a personal space in the Web, representing its properties and characteristics through a transmedia narrative unfolded through diverse languages and media. Three cases are presented, selected because they propose different strategies to approach the problem. In order to perform a comparative analysis of the results, the categories were defined based on the triadic structure of Peirce’s Theory of Signs, which in turn were divided into sub-categories that incorporate the Principles of Design and Evaluation of Interface-Spaces.

summary In this paper, we report on the conceptual design processes of two teams of graduate students that emerged in an educational setting as the teams worked on two different but scope-wise similar problems by utilizing analogue tools and a computational tool for parametric modelling respectively. We describe the similarities and differences that we observed within each of the teams’ respective design processes and the nature of the solutions they generated for the respective problems as well as the similarities and differences that we discerned across the teams’ design processes. We discuss the implications of our findings for integration of digital technologies in architectural curriculum and development of digital technologies for supporting collaborative conceptual design processes in architecture.

title Reconnoitring computational potentials of the vault-like forms: Thinking aloud on muqarnas tectonics

summary This study sheds light on a holistic understanding of muqarnas with its historical, philosophical and conceptual backgrounds on one hand and formal, structural and algorithmic principles on the other hand. The vault-like Islamic architectural element, muqarnas, is generally considered to be a non-structural decorative element. Various compositional approaches have been proposed to reveal the inner logic of these complex geometric elements. Each of these approaches uses different techniques such as measuring, unit-based decoding or three-dimensional interpretation of two-dimensional patterns. However, the reflections of the inner logic onto different contexts, such as the usage of different initial geometries, materials or performative concerns, were neglected. In this study, we offer a new schema to approach the performative aspects of muqarnas tectonics. This schema contains new sets of elements, properties and relations deriving partly from previous approaches and partly from the technique of folding. Thus, this study first reviews the previous approaches to analyse the geometric and constructional principles of muqarnas. Second, it explains the proposed scheme through a series of algorithmic form-finding experiments. In these experiments, we question whether ‘fold’, as one of the performative techniques of making three-dimensional forms, contributes to the analysis of muqarnas in both a conceptual and computational sense. We argue that encoding vault-like systems via geometric and algorithmic relations based on the logic of the ‘fold’ provides informative and intuitive feedback for form-finding, specifically in the earlier phases of design. While focusing on the performative potential of a specific fold operation, we introduced the concept of bifurcation to describe the generative characteristics of folding technique and the way of subdividing the form with respect to redistribution of the forces. Thus, in this decoding process, the bifurcated fold explains not only to demystify the formal logic of muqarnas but also to generate new forms without losing contextual conditions.

summary In architectural education, the demand for creating forms with a non-Euclidean geometry, which can only be achieved by using the computer-aided design tools, is increasing. The teaching of this subject is a great challenge for both students and instructors, because of the intensive nature of architecture undergraduate programs. Therefore, for the creation of those forms with a non-Euclidean geometry, experimental work was carried out in an elective course based on the learning visual programming language. The creation of folding structures with form-finding by simulation was chosen as the subject of the design production which would be done as part of the content of the course. In this particular course, it was intended that all stages should be experienced, from the modeling in the virtual environment to the digital fabrication. Hence, in their early years of architectural education, the students were able to learn versatile thinking by experiencing, simultaneously, the use of simulation in the environment of visual programming language, the forming space by using folding structures, the material-based thinking and the creation of their designs suitable to the digital fabrication.

summary In the past, there has been a rapid evolution in computational tools to represent and analyze architectural designs. Analysis tools can be used in all stages of the design process, but they are often only used in the final stages, where it might be too late to impact the design. This is due to the considerable time and effort typically needed to produce the analytical models required by the analysis tools. A possible solution would be to convert the digital architectural models into analytical ones, but unfortunately, this often results in errors and frequently the analytical models need to be built almost from scratch. These issues discourage architects from doing a performance-oriented exploration of their designs in the early stages of a project. To overcome these issues, we propose Algorithmic Design and Analysis, a method for analysis that is based on adapting and extending an algorithmic-based design representation so that the modeling operations can generate the elements of the analytical model containing solely the information required by the analysis tool. Using this method, the same algorithm that produces the digital architectural model can also automatically generate analytical models for different types of analysis. Using the proposed method, there is no information loss and architects do not need additional work to perform the analysis. This encourages architects to explore several design alternatives while taking into account the design’s performance. Moreover, when architects know the set of design variations they wish to analyze beforehand, they can easily automate the analysis process.

summary Acoustical design is one of the most challenging aspects of architecture. A complex system of competing influences (e.g., space geometry, size, proportion, material properties, surface detail, etc.) contribute to shaping the quality of the auditory experience. In particular, architectural surfaces affect the way that sound reflections propagate through space. By diffusing the reflected sound energy, surface designs can promote a more homogeneous auditory atmosphere by mitigating sharp and focused reflections. One of the challenges with designing an effective diffuser is the need to respond to a wide band of sound wavelengths, which requires the surface profile to precisely encode a range of detail sizes, depths and angles. Most of the available sound diffusers are designed to respond to a narrow band of frequencies. In this context, fractal-based surface designs can provide a unique opportunity for mitigating such limitations. A key principle of fractal geometry is its multilevel hierarchical order, which enables the same pattern to occur at different scales. This characteristic makes it a potential candidate for diffusing a wider band of sound wavelengths. However, predicting the reflection patterns of complicated fractal-based surface designs can be challenging using available acoustical software. These tools are often costly, complicated and are not designed for predicting early sound propagation paths. This research argues that writing customized algorithms provides a valuable, free and efficient alternative for addressing targeted acoustical design problems. The paper presents a methodology for designing and testing a customized algorithm for predicting sound diffusion patterns of fractal-based surfaces. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were used to develop the code and evaluate the results.

summary The work presented in this paper investigates the potential of tangible interaction to setup algorithmic rules for creating computational models. The research proposes a workflow that allows designers to create complex geometric patterns through their physical interaction with design objects. The method aims to address the challenges of designers implementing algorithms for computational modeling. The experiments included in this work are prototype-based, which link a digital environment with an artifact - the physical representation of a digital model that is integrated with a Physical Computing System. The digital-physical workflow is tested through enabling users to physically setup the rules of a Cellular Automata algorithm. The experiments demonstrate the possibility of utilizing tangible interaction to setup the initial cell state and the rules of a CA algorithm to generate complex geometric patterns.
