summary The paper discusses 23 interviewed architects in practice about the role of traditional and digital sketching (human-computer interaction) in communication with the client. They were selected from 1995 to 2018 (the interval of graduation) from three different countries: the Czech Republic (CR), Slovakia (SR), Netherland (NR). To realize three blending areas that impact the approach to sketching: (I) Traditional hand and physical model studies (1995-2003). (II)Transition form - designing by hand and PC (2004–2017). (III) Mainly digital and remote forms of designing (2018–now). Interviews helped transform 31 “parameters of tools use” from the previous theoretical framework narrowed down into six main areas: (1) Implementation; (2)Affordability; (3)Timesaving; (4) Drawing support; (5) Representativeness; (6) Transportability. Paper discusses findings from interviewees: (A) Implementation issues are above time and price. (B) Strongly different understanding of what digital sketching is. From drawing in Google Slides by mouse to sketching in Metaverse. (C) Substantial reduction of traditional sketching (down to a total of 3% of the time) at the expense of growing responsibilities. (D) 80% of respondents do not recommend sketching in front of the client. Also, other interesting findings are further described in the discussion.

summary External shading structures are a well-established typology for reducing solar heat loads. A major disadvantage is their inflexible nature, blocking views from inside and desired solar radiation for seasons with less sunshine hours. An adaptive approach on the other end can accommodate dynamic environmental exchange and user control. Furthermore, kinetic movement has great potential to create expressive spatial structures. However, such typologies are inherently complex. This paper presents the design process for two novel adaptive façade typologies, conducted on an experimental level in an educational context. Moreover, we will discuss the conception of a suitable methodological framework, which we applied to engage the complexity of this design task. Thereby we will highlight the importance of employing various methods, combining analogue and computational models not in a linear sequence, but rather in an overlapping, iterative way to create an innovation friendly design setting. The Sun Shades project offers insight into the relationships between design potentials inherent in adaptable structures and the advantages and limitation of computational methods employed to tackle them.

summary This paper provides a theoretical discourse on ontological instruments in design by exploring the ways in which design and technology might help get us back to an understanding of our own humanity. The intent of this theoretical discourse is to illuminate the possibilities of what can be, by looking at history as a way to see the world with perspective and as a predictor of what may happen. Another objective is to demonstrate the proof of those possibilities through the presentation of two design research projects which actualize those ideas. The first project is a prototype for an interactive chair that explores the calming effects of conscious and synchronized breathing. The second project is a reinterpretation of the veil and explores the relationship between the individual and the public. Both projects are artistic and performative in character and are embedded in a theoretical discourse on ontological instruments and investigate the opportunities of interaction of the human body with the environment moderated by technology.

summary How do we know what we are looking at while viewing inside Building Information Modelling (BIM) models? Current architectural software typically provides disconnected methods of aiding spatial cognition. There is a strong history of navigation tools developed for controlling our exploration and movement in BIM models, a study by Ruby Darken and John Sibert (1993) found these tools had a strong influence on people's behaviour and understanding of digital space. People perceive and navigate space differently depending on their individual experience with a BIM model, designers and architects build up a detailed cognitive map during the design of a project, while other people have a less detailed comprehension of a project, having only been exposed to select views. This paper will outline key strategies to improve how people comprehend digital space, supporting people in understanding distance and size while inside BIM models. Three design research projects will be presented. The result of the projects define three strategies; Architectural wayshowing, interior-aware transitions, and distance confirmation. Architectural wayshowing needs to be implemented during the design phase, while the remaining two need to be introduced into BIM editing and viewing software.

summary Simple and common architectural elements can be combined to create complex spaces. Different spatial compositions of elements define different spatial boundaries, and each produces a unique local spatial experience to observers inside the space. Therefore an architectural style brings about a distinct spatial experience. While multiple representation methods are practiced in the field of architecture, there lacks a compelling way to capture and identify spatial experiences. Describing an observer’s spatial experiences quantitatively and efficiently is a challenge. In this paper, we propose a method that employs 3D isovist methods and a convolutional neural network (CNN) to achieve recognition of local spatial compositions. The case studies conducted validate that this methodology works well in capturing and identifying local spatial conditions, illustrates the pattern and frequency of their appearance in designs, and indicates peculiar spatial experiences embedded in an architectural style. The case study used small designs by Mies van der Rohe and Aldo van Eyck. The contribution of this paper is threefold. First, it introduces a sampling method based on 3D Isovist that generates a 2D image that can be used to represent a 3D space from a specific observation point. Second, it employs a CNN model to extract features from the sampled images, then classifies their corresponding space. Third, it demonstrates a few case studies where this space classification method is applied to different architectural styles.

summary The paper explores the use of in-house developed self-reconfigurable modular robotic system in civil construction activities and investigates a concept where an arbitrary Civil Engineering structure or a daily use industrial product are self-assembled from a number of self-reconfigurable composite blocks. The system extends current range of modular robot systems (mDrs) where autonomous modules self-assemble into a wide variety of forms. However, contrary to conventional mDrs, MoleMOD has not mechatronic actuating parts permanently fixed to each individual module. The MoleMOD actuators are separable and operate inside the modules, tight them together or relocate them to required configuration. It significantly reduces number of expensive mechatronics parts and the environment the actuators operate. Although MoleMOD focuses on architecture, it can take over other mDrs tasks as research and rescue. This paper describes properties, advantages, foreseen applications, and basic design specifications of the second generation prototype.

summary In the case of designers, architects and arts, tools are part of a repertoire of cognitive, symbolic, and semiotic artifacts with which each explores and learn about design problems. Nonetheless, when using digital fabrication tools, a dichotomy between what is ideated and what is made appears as an evident problem since many of the perceptual aspects of sensing and thinking about new things in the making are neglected. It is argued that this establishes a dichotomy between what is ideated and what is executed as an outcome from that idea. How designers can think, learn and augment their creativity by using digital tools in a more relational, exploratory, interactive and creative way? Furthermore, how can we teach design using contemporary fabrication tools beyond its representational capabilities? This paper explores the richness of using digital fabrication tools through the lens of shapes grammars as a design paradigm in order to extend computational making including digital fabrication tools, gestures and material behavior as crucial actors of the design process. Through the use of discrete heuristics - that is, the elaboration of deictic rules for computation with physical objects, materials and fabrication tools in a precise yet perceptual way- this paper shows experiments inside a third year design studio to overcome the hylomorphism present in the digital design and make dichotomy.

summary Literature suggests that despite the increasing range and variety of computational tools and technologies, they have not really been employed for designing as extensively as it might be. This is due in part to the numerous challenges and impediments limiting their effective usage such as the methodological, procedural, and substantive factors and limitations, and skepticism about their impact of usage on the design process and outcome. The gap in our understanding of how advanced computational tools could support the design activities and design decision-making has expanded considerably to become a new area of inquiry with considerable room for the expansion of knowledge. This research is a single-case study that has been pursued in two phases: literature review and survey followed by analysis and discussion of the empirical results. The empirical observations were compared to the theoretical propositions and with results of similar research to highlight the areas and the extent to what the IT tools' usage have influenced the outcome of the design process. summary We describe one of the three core use-pattern building blocks of a parametric approach to simulating use-patterns in buildings. Use-patterns are modeled as events which use specified descriptions of spaces, actors and activities which constitute them. The simulation system relies on three fundamental patterns of use - move, meet and do. The move pattern is considered in detail in this paper with specific reference to what we term the partial knowledge issue. Modeling decision making about how to move through the space (what path to take) depends on modeling the actor's partial access to knowledge. Visibility is used as an example of partial knowledge. The parametric approach described in the paper enables the clear separation of syntactical and semantic conditions which inform decisions and the coordination of decisions made by agents in a simulation of use-patterns. This approach contributes to extending the analytical capability of Building Information Models from the point of view of evaluating how a proposed building design may be used, given complex, interrelated patterns of use.

summary This paper reports on creative practice design research founded on the translation of complex polyrhythmic digital drumming into the spatial domain. We outline four exercises in the use of drumming improvisation as a methodology for the spatialization of polyrhythmic drum improvisation; as static Spatial Drum Notation and representation as 3D models, artefacts and in Virtual Environments and live drumming performance inside a VR CAVE. These creative exercises bring forward concepts of affordance of musico-spatial representations, a theoretical 'musico-perspectival hinge' and the continuum of performance, notation and representation.

summary This thesis research presents an integrated workflow for the design and fabrication of large-scale architectural envelopes using swarms of drones and inflatable structures as formworks. The work lies at the intersection of architecture, biology and robotics, incorporating generative design with digital fabrication techniques. The proposed approach aims to investigate the tectonic potential of computational systems which encode behavioral strategies inside an agent-based model. It is from local interactions taking place at the micro-scale of complex systems that a new set of architectural tendencies seem to emerge. The authors focused on the strategies developed by colonies of social spiders during the construction of three-dimensional webs. Their communication system and the characteristics of the material structure have been then modelled and translated in a digital environment. A physical fabrication process, in which the simulated agents become drones in a real world environment, was concurrently developed. The goal was to investigate the architectural possibilities given by an autonomous aerial machine depositing fibrous material over inflatable formworks and its potential usefulness in specific sites where overall conditions don't allow traditional construction techniques.

title Assisted automation: Three learning experiences in architectural robotics

summary Fueled by long-standing dreams of both material efficiency and aesthetic liberation, robots have become part of mainstream architectural discourses, raising the question: How may we nurture an ethos of visual, tactile, and spatial exploration in technologies that epitomize the legacies of industrial automation—for example, the pursuit of managerial efficiency, control, and an ever-finer subdivision of labor? Reviewing and extending a growing body of research on architectural robotics pedagogy, and bridging a constructionist tradition of design education with recent studies of science and technology, this article offers both a conceptual framework and concrete strategies to incorporate robots into architectural design education in ways that foster a spirit of exploration and discovery, which is key to learning creative design. Through reflective accounts of three learning experiences, we introduce the notions “assisted automation” and “robotic embodiment” as devices to enrich current approaches to robot–human design, highlighting situated and embodied aspects of designing with robotic machines.

summary The emergence of media infused facades and new human computer interfaces have been of great interest in architecture in the recent decades. Most of the emerging examples are geared towards a multi-dimensional graphical output and most commonly stimulate our sense of sight. This paper explores recent developments in soft robotics and material sciences, developed at the Material Dynamics Lab at NJIT, that will allow the human computer interfaces to engage its users by captivating a multitude of senses simultaneously. Furthermore, this paper will contemplate future trajectories for the novel material strategies to improve human-computer or human-robot interaction, that one day may lead to truly robotic architectures.

summary There has been significant research into large-scale 3D printing processes with industrial robots. These were initially used to extrude in a layered manner. In recent years, research has aimed to make use of six degrees of freedom instead of three. These so called "spatial extrusion" methods are based on a toolhead, mounted on a robot arm, that extrudes a material along a non horizontal spatial vector. This method is more time efficient but up to now has suffered from a number of limiting geometrical and structural constraints. This limited the formal possibilities to highly repetitive truss-like patterns. This paper presents a generalised approach to spatial extrusion based on the notion of discreteness. It explores how discrete computational design methods offer increased control over the organisation of toolpaths, without compromising design intent while maintaining structural integrity. The research argues that, compared to continuous methods, discrete methods are easier to prototype, compute and manufacture. A discrete approach to spatial printing uses a single toolpath fragment as basic unit for computation. This paper will describe a method based on a voxel space. The voxel contains geometrical information, toolpath fragments, that is subsequently assembled into a continuous, kilometers long path. The path can be designed in response to different criteria, such as structural performance, material behaviour or aesthetics. This approach is similar to the design of meta-materials - synthetic composite materials with a programmed performance that is not found in natural materials. Formal differentiation and structural performance is achieved, not through continuous variation, but through the recombination of discrete toolpath fragments. Combining voxel-based modelling with notions of meta-materials and discrete design opens this domain to large-scale 3D printing. Please write your abstract here by clicking this paragraph.

summary Most recent developments in the design of free form shells pursue new approaches in digital fabrication based on material properties and construction-aware design. In this research we proposed an alternative approach based on implementation of expanded polystyrene (EPS), a non-standard material for shells, in the process of industrial robot fabrication that enables fast and precise cutting of building elements. Main motivation for using EPS as a building material was driven by numerous advantages when compared to commonly used materials such as: recycleability, cost-efficiency, high earthquake resistance, durability and short assembly time. We describe case specific fabrication approach based on numerous production constraints (size of the panels, limited robot workspace, in situ conditions) that directly design the process.

summary In modern architecture, construction processes are based on top down planning, yet in nature but also in vernacular architecture, the shape of shelters/nests is the result of evolutionary material processes which takes place without any global coordination or plan. This work presents a framework for exploring how self-organizing structures can be achieved in a bottom up fashion by implementing a swarm of simple robots(bristle bots). The robots are used as a hardware platform and operate in a modular 2D arena filled with differently shaped passive building blocks. The robots push around blocks and their behaviour can be programmed mechanically by changing the geometry of their body. Through physical experimentation and video analysis the relationships between the properties of the emergent patterns (size, temporal stability) and the geometry of the robot/parts are studied. This work couples a set of agent based design tools with a robust robotic system and a set of analysis tools for generating and actualising emergent 2D structures.

summary This paper proposes a design and fabrication approach based on the conceptualization of architectural formations as spatial assemblies of discrete building blocks to be aggregated through custom robotic procedures. Such strategy attempts to create synergies between different technological methods and to define a new and open design space where discrete design, serial prototyping and robotic assembly can be exploited to create complex reconfigurable structures. With the aim to allow users to explore the field of discrete geometries for architectural application without need for prior programming knowledge, we developed a software framework for representing and designing with discrete elements, different digital fabrication techniques integrated with conventional production processes for serial prototyping of repetitive units, and custom robotic fabrication routines, allowing a direct translation from aggregated geometry to assembly toolpath. Together these methods aim at creating a more direct connection between design and fabrication, relying on the idea of discrete elements assembly and on the parallel between modular design and modularized robot code generation.

title Robotic Formwork in the MARS Pavilion: Towards The Creation Of Programmable Matter

summary The proliferation of parametric tools has allowed for the design of previously impossible geometry, but the construction industry has failed to keep pace. We demonstrate the use of industrial robots to disrupt the ancient process of casting concrete and create an adjustable formwork capable of generating various cast components based on digital input, crafting a new approach to “programmable matter.” The resulting research delineates a novel methodology to facilitate otherwise cost-prohibitive, even impossible design. The MARS Pavilion employs this methodology in a building-sized proof of concept where manipulating fabric with industrial robots achieves previously unattainable precision while casting numerous connective concrete components to form a demountable lattice structure. The pavilion is the result of parametric form finding, in which a catenary structure ensures that the loads are acting primarily in compression. Every concrete component is unique, yet can be assembled together with a 1/16-inch tolerance. Expanding Culver & Sarafian’s previous investigations, industrial robot arms are sent coordinates to position fabric sleeves into which concrete is poured, facilitating a rapid digital-to-physical casting process. With this fabrication method, parametric variation in design is cost-competitive relative to other iterative casting techniques. This digital breakthrough necessitated analogue material studies of rapid-setting, high-strength concrete and flexible, integral reinforcing systems. The uniquely shaped components are coupled with uniform connectors designed to attach three limbs of concrete, forming a highly stable, compressive hex-grid shell structure. A finite element analysis (FEA) was a critical step in the structural engineering process to simulate various load scenarios on the pavilion and drive the shape of the connective elements to their optimal form.
