summary MAS can be utilized to analyse macro rules of whole system by simulating a number of active agents. However, simply based on the parameter of specific environment quality and incomplete statistical setting of individual, models of pedestrian traffic in realistic open space have often been imperfect, because the behaviour of people cannot be rationally reflected to the complex characteristic of space. Space Syntax Theory breaks down the space into components and measures each with the straight sight-line of individuals, which can help analyse and quantify pedestrian flow in complicated real-life environment. In this situation, we make an attempt to combine these two in our research, in order to simulate the moving of pedestrian closer to reality. In this paper, Gulou Square, an urban open space close to centre of the city with a large flow of people, is selected as the study site. The results after plenty of simulations and contrast tests can be concluded that with the assistance of Space Syntax Theory, MAS can be more functional solving the problems in sophisticated real-life environment.

summary The objective of this research project is to simulate and evaluate the effect of movement velocity and cognitive abilities on the visual perception of three groups of urban users: pedestrians, cyclists and car drivers.The simulation and analysis is based on the 3D Dynamic Visual Analysis (DVA) (Fisher-Gewirtzman, 2017). This visibility analysis model was developed in the Rhinoceros and Grasshopper software environments and is based on the conceptual model presented in Fisher-Gewirtzman (2016): a 3D Line of Sight (LOS) visibility analysis, taking into account the integrated effect of the 3D geometry of the environment and the variant elements of the view (such as the sky, trees and vegetation, buildings and building types, roads, water etc.). In this paper, the current advancement of the existing model considers the visual perception of human users employing three types of movement in the urban environment--pedestrians, cyclists and drivers--is explored.We expect this research project to exemplify the contribution of such a quantification and evaluation model to evaluating existing urban structures, and for supporting future human perception-based urban design processes.

summary The understanding of space relies on motion, as we experience space by crossing it in time, space’s fourth dimension. However, architects lack the necessary tools to incorporate people's motion into their design of space. As a consequence, architects fail to connect space with the motion of the people that inhabit their buildings, creating disorienting environments. Further, what if augmentation technology changes how we inhabit space and the static built environment does not fit people anymore? This paper explores the problem of developing a model from people's motion, to inform and augment the architecture design process in the early stages. As an outcome, I have designed a model based on data from human-space interaction obtained through field work. First, relevant behavior was identified and recorded. Second, a metric was extracted from the data and composed by speed, the 4th D dimension as time, and gestures. Third, the original behavior was rebuilt, producing a set of rules. The rules were combined to form the model of human-space interaction. This generalizable model provides a novel approach to designing space based on data from people. Moreover, this paper presents a means of incorporating inhabitants' behavior into digital design. Finally, the model contributes to the advancement of people's motion research for general applications, such as in transport engineering, robotics, and cognitive sciences.

summary City built-form guidelines act as durable constraints on building design decisions. Such guidelines directly impact energy, comfort and other performance conditions. Existing urban design and planning methods only consider a narrow range of potential design scenarios, with rudimentary performance criteria, resulting in suboptimal urban designs. Bibil is a software plugin for the Rhinoceros3D/Grasshopper3D CAD modeler that addresses this gap through the synthesis of design space exploration methods to help design teams optimize guidelines for environmental and energy performance criteria over the life cycle of the city. Bibil consists of three generative and data management modules. The first module simulates development scenarios from street and block information through time, the second designs appropriate architectural typology, and the third abstracts the typologies into a lightweight analysis model for detailed thermal load and energy simulation. State-of-the-art performance simulation is done via the Ladybug Analysis Tools Grasshopper3D plugin, and further bespoke analysis to explore the resulting design space is achieved with custom Python scripts.This paper first introduces relevant background for automated exploration of urban design guidelines. Then the paper surveys the state-of-the-art in design and performance simulation tools in the urban domain. Next the paper describes the beta version of the tool’s three modules and its application in a built form study to assess urban canyon performance in a major North American city. Bibil enables the exploration of a broader range of potential design scenarios, for a broader range of performance criteria, over a longer period of time.

summary Traditional design paradigms take into account phases as the process were subdivided rigidly in boxes to which pertain specific building entities, actors and LODs. In reality the process of design, a building f.i., it is not so much organized in series, nor designers deal with just a specific LOD. The process is intertwined and actors mix various type entities with different accuracy. To manage these problems, we need a new paradigm and new tools able to take immediately into account satisfied/unsatisfied constraints, to trig on consequences of choices made as far as it is possible and to link fluently and bidirectionally a 2nd layer of building abstraction (BIM) with a 3rd one of knowledge abstraction. An on-the-fly link has been established between BIM and a swarm of agent-based simulations.

summary In this paper, we further develop and test a walkability evaluation method developed by the first author to understand two neighborhoods in Brussels. This method introduced alternative strategies and tools for enabling the evaluation of walkability and discussed how a structured collection of human experiences could lead to a social construct of walkability. In this study, following this method, we made a field survey with architecture students to measure the walkability of the two referenced neighborhoods. In addition, considering the close links of walkability with the physical layout and configuration, we made a Space Syntax analysis (visual integration and axial connectivity) and compared this with the walkability ratings made by the students. As a result, we found moderate to high correlations between the experiential evaluation of the students and the Space Syntax results. Besides establishing links between subjective and computational surveys, this study led to the conception of a web-based platform with a mobile app which integrates location-based experiential and computational evaluations of walkability.

summary Architects and designers should be familiar with the city developmental process to know about all the city aspects if they are hidden the whole time. This matter shows the importance of studying the urban sections to find out the city critical points. The method is the space syntax in one view which is the consideration of urban network analysis and it would be presented by graphs and maps by a computational description of the selected places. The main target of the space syntax establishment is to study the urban network issue by clarifying the most logical routes in the urban road network. This study has the aim to implement the space syntax as a method to determine urban network problems in order to achieve the new suggestions to increase the urban network integration. summary We describe one of the three core use-pattern building blocks of a parametric approach to simulating use-patterns in buildings. Use-patterns are modeled as events which use specified descriptions of spaces, actors and activities which constitute them. The simulation system relies on three fundamental patterns of use - move, meet and do. The move pattern is considered in detail in this paper with specific reference to what we term the partial knowledge issue. Modeling decision making about how to move through the space (what path to take) depends on modeling the actor's partial access to knowledge. Visibility is used as an example of partial knowledge. The parametric approach described in the paper enables the clear separation of syntactical and semantic conditions which inform decisions and the coordination of decisions made by agents in a simulation of use-patterns. This approach contributes to extending the analytical capability of Building Information Models from the point of view of evaluating how a proposed building design may be used, given complex, interrelated patterns of use.

summary This study focuses on generating geometric design alternatives for an airport roof structure with an evolutionary design method based on optimizing solar heat gain and daylight levels. The method incorporates a parametric 3D model of the building, a multi objective genetic algorithm that was linked with the model to iteratively test for various geometric solutions, a custom module that was developed to simulate solar conditions, and external energy simulation environments that was used to validate the outcomes. The integral outcome was achieved through an iterative workflow of many software tools, and the study is significant in dealing with several space typologies at the same time, taking real-life constraints such as applicability, ease of operation, construction loads into consideration, and satisfying design and aesthetic requirements of the architectural design team.

summary The use of ornament in public space has been contested throughout history, and attitudes towards the articulation of building surfaces have shifted over time. Antoine Picon has argued that the use of ornament to communicate meaning and identity is returning to a place of cultural prominence. Well-established digital design and fabrication technologies have given rise to projects that integrate performance and aesthetics through the exploitation of form, pattern and ornament. These techniques allow the designer to inscribe and overlay data generated through performance simulation and environmental analysis, and formal relationships and fabrication processes onto materials and spatial fields, creating novel configurations and effects. Operating at a scale between object and building, public art, sculpture and architectural ornament allow for a particular type of interdisciplinary experimentation and hybrid practice. Three recent public art proposals illustrate an approach that composites multiple datasets to generate new relationships between aesthetic, environmental and functional considerations in order to activate public space. The proposals presented here put forward a set of tactics that can be deployed towards embedding overlapping data in public spaces. These proposals use pattern to form and form to pattern workflows as a way to produce multiple potential readings through pareidolia. This paper presents an investigation into how contemporary digital design and fabrication processes can bridge between performance and perception, and how ornament and pattern might be deployed for both formal and performative purposes to help foster a more personalized relationship with the urban spaces we occupy.

summary The hi-resolution imaging of public urban space for both promotional and surveillance purposes is now undertaken by a range of ubiquitous visioning technology such as Internet webcams, drones (UAV's) and high-altitude aircraft cameras. The ability to control and manipulate these types of images is a growing concern in an increasingly 'envisioned' environment. One approach is to disrupt or modify the 'emission signatures' of urban surfaces, which requires an understanding of the digital algorithms used to assemble and transmit image content into grids of visual data. Recent scaled tests show that Fraunhofer diffraction algorithms can interfere with the smooth transmission of image data. When these algorithmic patterns are physically constructed into a building façade, they create natural disruption glitches in the camera's successful transmission of visual data. The paper details how the quantum of visual aberration in the digital portrayal of the city can be determined by algorithm-based façade patterning.

Recently, new forms of sound visualization and auralization techniques have emerged within the research fields of Soundscape and Noise Pollution studies. The development of digital media, such as game engines, introduced new forms of audiovisual 3d representations, combining geometry and sound in a structured interactive computational space. summary This paper presents design research speculating on new planning approaches for informal urban sites that enables coordinated planning to operate within the realm of spontaneous, bottom-up redevelopment. In opposition to the /tabula rasa/ Modernist development, this project reacts to the dynamic metabolism of the village and engages with the rapid turnover of the built environment of the village as a mechanism through which to implement incremental redevelopment. A radical reorientation of the object of masterplanning, this replaces the singular image or document as the guiding authority with a collection of opportunistic adaptations, temporal sequences, and localized procedures. Enabling this approach is a computational approach that analyzes the morphology of the public space network to identify opportunities to address issues in the composition of the village. A multiagent system driven by weighted random walks through the circulation network conducts local analyses of the urban fabric while changes are made and proposes potential modifications to discrete areas. The model simulates the potential for such a planning tool to be used over a long time span and updated with empirically gathered data, having the benefit of flexibility and resilience in the face of the changing and unregulated conditions in the context of informal urbanism.

summary In this paper we review the research on multi-agent space planning (MASP) during the period of 2008-2017. By MASP, we refer to space planning (SP) methods based on online mobile agents that map local perceptions to actions in the environment, generating spatial representation. We group two precedents and sixteen recent MASP prototypes into three categories: (1) agents as moving spatial units, (2) agents that occupy a space, and (3) agents that partition a space. In order to compare the prototypes, we identify the occurrence of features in terms of representation, objectives, and control procedures. Upon analysis of occurrences and correlations of features in the types, we present gaps and challenges for future MASP research. We point to the limits of current systems to solve spatial conflicts and to incorporate architectural knowledge. Finally, we suggest that behavioral learning offers a promising path for robust and autonomous MASP systems in the architectural domain.

summary Computational visual simulations are extremely useful and powerful tools for decision-making. The use of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) has become a common phenomenon due to real-time and interactive visual simulation tools in architectural and urban design studies and presentations. In this study, a demonstration is performed to integrate Structure from Motion (SfM) into VR and AR. A 3D modeling method is explored by SfM under realtime rendering as a solution for the modeling cost in large-scale VR. The study examines the application of camera parameters of SfM to realize an appropriate registration and tracking accuracy in marker-less AR to visualize full-scale design projects on a planned construction site. The proposed approach is applied to plural real architectural and urban design projects, and results indicate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

summary The concept of Embodied Computation is to leverage the combination of abstract computational and material artifact as a method for exploration in the design process. A common approach for the integration of the two realms is to use computational simulation based on the geometric form of the artifact for the prediction of material behavior. This leads to the integration of a geometric model abstraction of the physical artifact into the control software of the actuated device and can produce deviations between the state of the physical construct and the computational state. Here an alternative approach of a soft, actuated, active bending structure is explored. Six fluidic actuators are combined with a six degree of freedom (DOF) sensor for posture feedback. Instead of relying on simulated kinematics to reach a particular posture, the sensor-enabled posture feedback guides a simplex search algorithm to find combinations of pressures in the six actuators that minimize the combined tilting angles for the goal of a level tower top. Rather than simulating the structure computationally, the model is shifted to one of feedback and control, and the structure operates as a physical equation solver returning an x-y-z tilting angle for every set of actuation pressures. Therefore the computational model of the search process is independent of the physical configuration of the structure itself and robust to changes in the environment or the structure itself. This has the future potential for more robust control of non-determined structures and constructs with heterogeneous DOF common in architecture where modeling behavior is difficult.

summary This Master Thesis research investigates the concept of 'integrated tectonics' as a new way of thinking sustainability in architecture, intended as an ecology of different, integrated factors which take part in a seamless design-to-fabrication process. In particular, this new paradigm is applied to the design of a pavilion made of a fiber-reinforced (FRP) sandwich shell integrating multiple systems and performances. A differential growth algorithm mimicking cellular tissue development modulates performance across the surface through ornamental features in the form of corrugated patterns. Iterative feedback simulations allow the exploration of the mutual relations connecting morphogenesis and performance distribution patterns at the architectural scale. Problems connected to simulation inaccuracies and difficult software integration are discussed. A 1:2 scale prototype of a shell portion was fabricated to test material properties and production feasibility.

summary Planning for resilience and enabling positive design outcomes requires combinatory methods of working with data, in order to assist decision-makers develop evidence-based methodologies and easily communicated scenarios. The staggering rise of technology integration and data-aided analysis tools in urban planning, not only facilitates our understanding of socio-economic flux, but attempts to actively involve users as a way of creating environments that are more responsive and appropriate to their needs. This paper aims to contribute to the discourse on user involvement in design-oriented fields, in our case, urban planning, by analyzing two different approaches of participatory design.

summary The capacity to respond dynamically to changes in external and internal environments open new possibilities in the interaction between buildings, humans and the environment. The development of dynamic envelopes requires the integration of various systems- geometric, structural, and electronic-responsive and their interaction. The paper reports the results from the "Dynamic Cloud Project" and presents a design and fabrication methodology to integrate kinetic behaviour with material constraints; the simulation of responses by connecting components with programmable input and behaviour. The paper presents a modular, component-driven systems construction based on a carrier-component surface geometry called responsive carrier-component envelope (RCCE) and describes the modelling, fabrication and assembly of such envelopes. The protocols developed in the project are reported in the paper and highlight the opportunities and consequences of how local components relate to the whole carrier envelope with multiple constraints and scale considerations. The results of the prototyping and experimentation with this project are reported in the paper. The paper also discusses future applications of the research and outlines new possibilities and design opportunities in prototyping responsive carrier-component envelopes.

summary We present initial experiments of Web-based Parametric Building Information Modeling (WP-BIM) towards collaborative design, modeling, simulation, and optimization. A new framework that integrates Web-based information technology (WebGL graphics, networking, and Web browsers), and design computing technology (visual programming) into parametric BIM is prototyped for the experiments. The integration of Web technology is going to enable online collaborative and user participatory design. Connected through the Web platform, a BIM model, visual programming-based user interfaces for parametric changes, and an optimization algorithm, which may reside in different servers or local computers in different geographical locations, have the potential to be integrated and working together to resolve design optimization problems, especially if combined with cloud-based performance simulation tools. After future development, this may allow architects, engineers, clients, etc. to collaboratively work on a project with up-to-date building data and different design and simulation tools.
