title Distribution of Carbon Storage and Potential Strategies to Enhance Carbon Sequestration Capacity in Singapore: A Study Based on Machine Learning Simulation and Geospatial Analysis

summary The expansion of urbanization leads to significant changes in land use, consequently affecting carbon storage. This research aims to investigate the carbon loss due to land use alterations and proposes strategies for mitigation. Utilizing existing land use data from 2017 and 2022, along with simulated data for 2025 generated by an ANN model and Cellular Automata, we identified changes in land use. These changes were then correlated with variations in carbon storage, both gains and losses. Our findings reveal a significant loss of 36,859 metric tons of carbon storage from 2017 to 2022. The projection for 2025 estimates a further reduction, reaching a total loss of 83,409 metric tons. By employing the LISA method, we identified that low-carbon storage zones are concentrated in the southeast region of the research site. By overlaying these zones with areas of carbon storage loss, we pinpointed regions severely affected by carbon depletion. Consequently, we propose that mitigation strategies should be imperatively implemented in these identified areas to counteract the trend of carbon storage loss. This approach offers urban planners a solution to identify areas experiencing carbon storage decline. Moreover, our research methodology provides a novel framework for scholars studying similar carbon issues.

summary New technologies and uncontrolled open-data policies lead public to a new way of approaching the built environment. To enlarge the competences of the professionals that work within the cities, we believe that providing a deep and dynamic knowledge on the heritage and urban built environment is the more effective solution to offer a unique support to the needs. By providing a boosted geographical database with detailed information about the status of each building, we aim to support the professional by providing a neat vision about vacant buildings available citywide. We think this knowledge is an important asset in covering every kind of public requests: from flat to rent to an abandoned building to restore or to drive better investors. The city of Trento will be the pilot project to test these statements.We studied the phenomenon of pushing new constructions rather investing on the reuse of abandoned buildings with the consequences of unsustainable land use. To address the work we adopted a comprehensive approach across the fields of urbanism, ICT engineering and social sciences. We believe that sharing knowledge and know-hows with municipalities, agencies, and citizens is the way to support better market strategies as well as urban transformation policies.

summary The presence of web2.0 and traceable mobile devices creates new opportunities for urban designers to understand cities through an analysis of user-generated data. The emergence of “big data” has resulted in a large amount of information documenting daily events, perceptions, thoughts, and emotions of citizens, all annotated with the location and time that they were recorded. This data presents an unprecedented opportunity to gauge public opinion about the topic of interest. Natural language processing with social media is a novel tool complementary to traditional survey methods. In this paper, we validate these methods using tourism data from Trip-Advisor in Andorra. “Natural language processing” (NLP) detects patterns within written languages, enabling researchers to infer sentiment by parsing sentences from social media. We applied sentiment analysis to reviews of tourist attractions and restaurants. We found that there were distinct geographic regions in Andorra where amenities were reviewed as either uniformly positive or negative. For example, correlating negative reviews of parking availability with land use data revealed a shortage of parking associated with a known traffic congestion issue, validating our methods. We believe that the application of NLP to social media data can be a complementary tool for urban decision making.

summary The rise in robotics is not only changing fabrication research in architecture but increasingly providing opportunities for animating the materiality of architecture, offering responsive, performative and adaptive design possibilities for the built environment. A fundamental challenge with robotics is its suitability to safe, and comfortable use in proximity to the human body. Here we present the preliminary results of the Roamniture Project, a hybrid approach to developing kinetic architecture based on a combination of rigid and soft body dynamics.

summary Beyond its widespread use for representing technical aspects and matters of building and construction science, Building information modeling (BIM) can be used to represent architectural relationships and rules drawn from aesthetic theory. This research suggests that BIM provides not only vocabulary but also syntactical tools that can be used to capture an architectural language. In a case study using Richard Meier’s language for single-family detached houses, a BIM template has been devised to represent the aesthetic concepts and relations therein. The template employs parameterized conceptual mass objects, syntactical rules, and a library of architectonic elements, such as walls, roofs, columns, windows, doors, and railings. It constrains any design produced using the template to a grammatically consistent expression or style. The template has been used as the starting point for modeling the Smith House, the Douglas House, and others created by the authors, demonstrating that the aesthetic template is general to many variations. Designing with the template to produce a unique but conforming design further illustrates the generality and expressiveness of the language. Having made the formal language explicit, in terms of syntactical rules and vocabulary, it becomes easier to vary the formal grammar and concrete vocabulary to produce variant languages and styles. Accordingly, this approach is not limited to a specific style, such as Richard Meier's. Future research can be conducted to demonstrate how designing with BIM can support stylistic change. Adoption of this approach in practice could improve the consistency of architectural designs and their coherence to defined styles, potentially increasing the general level of aesthetic expression in our built environment.

summary This paper describes an experience in a Graduate course Architecture and Urbanism that used computational tools to analyze urban quality – considering form, uses, density and spatial configuration (based on visual and fields) – in different urban areas in the city of Joăo Pessoa. Understanding that the city is a problem in organized complexity, different aspects condition the quality of use of spaces and reveal urban dynamics. Urban analysis aided by computational tools revealed successful in characterizing different problems and potentialities that can lay the foundation for interventions with more urban quality.

summary This paper demonstrates a workflow converting terrestrial laser scan (TLS) data into an interactive virtual reality (VR) platform. A VR exhibition prototype of Lincoln Cathedral was created to validate the established workflow in terms of the technical and visual performance, usability, and functionality. It combined TLS data and storytelling to produce a shareable platform, inviting opportunities for public engagement, and to facilitate custodians with the tools to maintain the building’s heritage. The paper discusses the use of open sourcesoftware and suggests future work.

summary Contemporary architecture is considered a dynamic system, capable of adapting to different needs, from environmental to functional ones. The term 'Adaptable Architecture' describes an architecture from which specific components can be changed in relation to external stimuli. This change could be executed by the building system itself, transformed manually or it could be any other ability to be transformed by external forces (Leliveld et al.2017). Adaptability concept is therefore linked to motion and to recent advances in kinetic architecture. In our research we are studying the rules that we can use to design a kinetic architecture using origami. Parametric design allows us to digitally simulate the movement of origami structures, we are testing algorithmic modeling to generate doubly curvature surfaces starting from a designed surface and not from the process. Our main goal is to study the relationship between geometry, motion and shape. We are interested, in particular, in complex surface manufacture using origami technique to design a kinetic and reactive ceiling.

summary Engineers and architects are now turning to use computational aids in order to analyze and solve complex design problems. Most of these problems can be handled by techniques that exploit Evolutionary Computation (EC). However existing EC techniques are slow [8] and hard to understand, thus disengaging the user. Swarm Intelligence (SI) relies on social interaction, of which humans have a natural understanding, as opposed to the more abstract concept of evolutionary change. The main aim of this research is to introduce a new solver Silvereye, which implements Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) in the Grasshopper framework, as the algorithm is hypothesized to be fast and intuitive. The second objective is to test if SI is able to solve complex design problems faster than ECbased solvers. Experimental results on a complex, single-objective high-dimensional benchmark problem of roof geometry optimization provide statistically significant evidence of computational inexpensiveness of the introduced tool.

summary Cities are continuously produced through entropic processes that mediate between complex networked systems and the immediacy urban life. Emergent media technologies inform new relationships between information and matter, code and space to redefine new urban ecosystems. Modes of perceiving, experiencing and inhabiting cities are radically changing along with a radical transformation of the tools that we use to design. Cities as complex and systemic organisms require approaches that engage new multi-scalar strategies to connect the physical layer with the system of networked ecologies. This paper aims at investigating emerging and novel forms of reading and producing urban spaces reimagining the physical city through intelligent and mediated processes. Through data agency and responsive urban processes, the design methodology explored the materialization of a temporary pneumatic structure and membrane that tested material performance through fabrication and sensing practices through the pneuSENSE project developed in July 2016 in New York at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during the 'HyperCities' IaaC- Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia - Global Summer School.

summary Computational tools mainly support authoring single-state models, which fall short in enabling designers to work with multiple solutions side-byside. This is a natural design behaviour commonly observed when designers use other media or improvise digital tools to explore alternatives. In this paper we attempt to formalize a method that aims to help designers to create multiple design alternatives derived from a base parametric model and its controllers. The goal is to change alternative designs such that each alternative can respond to changes as their internal structures allow. We present five assumptions on the tools that this can be achieved and also a parametric design pattern to be used in similar situations. Despite the complexity of the models, we can demonstrate the possibility of working with multiple solutions in architectural design.

title Towards a Genome for Zero Carbon Retrofit of UK Housing

summary The United Kingdom has some of the worst insulated housing stock in Northern Europe. This is in part due to the age of housing in the UK, with over 90% being built before 1990 [McCrone 2017, Piddington 2020]. Moreover, 85% of current UK housing will still be in use in 2050 by which stage their Government are targeting Net Carbon Zero [Eyre 2019]. Domestic energy use accounts for around 25% of UK carbon emissions. The UK will need to retrofit 20 million dwellings in order to meet this target. If this delivery were evenly spread, it would equate to over 2,000 retrofit completions each day. Government-funded initiatives are stimulating the market, with upwards of 60,000 social housing retrofits planned for 2023, but it is clear that a system must be developed to enable the design and implementation of housing-stock improvement at a large scale.This paper charts the 20-year development of a digital approach to the design for low-carbon domestic retrofit by architects Constructive Thinking Studio Limited and thence documents the emergence of a collaborative approach to retrofit patterns on a National scale. The author has led the Research and Development stream of this practice, developing a Building Information Modelling methodology and integrated Energy Modelling techniques to optimise design for housing retrofit [Georgiadou 2019, Ben 2020], and then inform a growing palette of details and a database of validated solutions [Moorhouse 2013] that can grow and be used to predict options for future projects [D’Angelo 2022]. The data is augmented by monitoring energy and environmental performance, enabling a growing body of knowledge that can be aligned with existing big data to simulate the benefits of nationwide stock improvement. The paper outlines incremental case studies and collaborative methods pivotal in developing this work The proposed outcome of the work is a Retrofit Genome that is available at a national level.

summary The chosen theme, Resilience Design, evidences the researchers’ concern about issues related to our reality of climate change and natural disasters, associated with the states of vulnerability and risk, having wide effects on society and the way we inhabit territories. These matters are fundamental and highly relevant for the disciplines and in the fields of design and architecture, as they are also important for collaborative work with areas emerging from the arts and human sciences. Thinking about Resilience Design is to set ourselves on new scenarios of reflection and action which, supported by transdisciplinary thinking and collaborative design, allow us to develop a new approach towards our territories and their demands, one that is more contextualized and adjusted to their current and future requirements, a starting point to establish the key elements to drive change in our cities and society. In this sense, technology and digital development, parametric design, the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), in addition to work done with Building Information Modelling (BIM), among many others, have been delivering an enormous amount of tools and possibilities of interaction with living in society, leading to a substantive change in the way of understanding and relating to the built environment and the territories where buildings are sit. This demands a strong commitment to Social Responsibility from our disciplines, besides the necessary landing of cutting-edge technological and digital research and development onto our diverse realities, in order for them to be put at the service of communities in vulnerable environments or with a marked condition of risk, which are subject to constant processes of resilience. Working on Resilience Design allows to support research and productive processes, plus the appearance of new technologies in interdisciplinary contexts, which greatest value is to impact the processes of teaching and professional practice in the different areas related to human habitation. The new professionals will have to take action and immerse themselves into these new scenarios of change and constant adjustment.

summary The increasing number of crowd disasters has awakened the need to evaluate the evacuation performance of buildings. However, the information available in building design guidance documents is insufficient to efficiently address safety requirements and official metrics do not take into consideration crucial factors for the success of emergency evacuations, namely the people's dynamics. Although modeling human behavior is not trivial, the recent approach of Agent-Based modeling has been facilitating this task, thus being a suitable tool for evacuation simulations. Nevertheless, the potentialities of this approach are still quite unexplored. Although Agent-Based modeling is already being applied in security analysis tests, its use in combination with Generative Design (GD) is still very limited. In this work, we show how a combination of both approaches improves the safety of buildings.

summary Several research projects (Gramazio et al. 2014; Willmann et al. 2015; Helm et al. 2017; Adel et al. 2018; Adel Ahmadian 2020) have investigated the use of automated assembly technologies (e.g., industrial robotic arms) for the fabrication of nonstandard timber structures. Building on these projects, we present a novel and transferable process for the robotic fabrication of bespoke timber subassemblies made of off-the-shelf standard timber elements. A nonstandard timber structure (Figure 2), consisting of four bespoke subassemblies: three vertical supports and a Zollinger (Allen 1999) roof structure, acts as the case study for the research and validates the feasibility of the proposed process.

summary This paper presents the experience of the first phase of remodeling existing historical and colonial district in Bandung, Indonesia, including existing building façade, streetscape and street furniture. Braga Street is chosen as study case because it is a well-known historical street in Bandung with art deco style buildings constructed during Dutch colonial era. By remodeling it, it could help stakeholders to evaluate existing Braga street condition, to test any modification of buildings along the street and to determine specific regulation for the street. In this case, we use Unity3D and Oculus Rift DK2 for remodeling current situation. We gathered feedback from respondents using a questionnaire given after they experienced the model in VR. Many lessons learned from modeling process and respondents' feedback: higher frame rate to make seamless VR experience by having all components on a low poly model and provide smoother movement to prevent visual discomfort. This paper's conclusion gives suggestions for anyone who want to start architecture modeling in virtual reality for the very first time and how to optimize it.

title Macro-scale designs through topological deformations in the built environment

summary Design studies are being done on contemporary master-plans which may be applied in many locations worldwide. Advances in information technology are becoming the base model of design studies, and these may be more effective than the efforts of humans in the field of architecture and urban design. However, urban morphology variables and constants must be considered while designing contemporary master-plans in the existing built environment. The aims of this study were to extend the use of computer software for different applications and to make a topological work in the regional context. Accordingly, a case study was made using the nCloth simulation tools to create non-Euclidean forms while protecting the road system, which is one of the constant parameters of urban morphology in the built environment.

summary In architectural education, the demand for creating forms with a non-Euclidean geometry, which can only be achieved by using the computer-aided design tools, is increasing. The teaching of this subject is a great challenge for both students and instructors, because of the intensive nature of architecture undergraduate programs. Therefore, for the creation of those forms with a non-Euclidean geometry, experimental work was carried out in an elective course based on the learning visual programming language. The creation of folding structures with form-finding by simulation was chosen as the subject of the design production which would be done as part of the content of the course. In this particular course, it was intended that all stages should be experienced, from the modeling in the virtual environment to the digital fabrication. Hence, in their early years of architectural education, the students were able to learn versatile thinking by experiencing, simultaneously, the use of simulation in the environment of visual programming language, the forming space by using folding structures, the material-based thinking and the creation of their designs suitable to the digital fabrication.
