summary Today’s generative design tools and large screen displays present opportunities for designers to explore large number of design alternatives. Besides numerous studies in design, the act of exploring design space is yet to be integrated in the design of new digital media. To understand how designer’s search patterns will uncover when provided with a gallery of large numbers of design solutions, we conducted a lab experiment with nine designers. Particularly the study explored how designers used spatial structuring of their work environment to make informed design decisions. The results of the study present intuitions for development of next generation front-end gallery interfaces for managing a large set of design variations while enabling simultaneous editing of design parameters.

summary The day is not far off when autonomous, artificially intelligent agents will be employed in creative industries such as architecture and design. Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming ubiquitous, and it has absorbed many capabilities once thought beyond its reach. As such, it is critical that we reflect on the relationship between AI and design. Design is often tasked with pushing the envelope in the quest for novel meaning and experience. Designers can’t always rely upon existing models to judge their work. Operating like this requires a curious and open mind, a willingness to eschew reward and occasionally break the rules, and a desire to explore for the sake of exploring. These behaviors fly in the face of traditional implementations of computation and raise difficult questions about the autonomy and subjectivity of artificially intelligent machines. This paper proposes computational play as a field of research that covers how and why designers roam as freely as they do, what the creative potential of such exploration might be, and how such techniques might responsibly be implemented in computational machines. The work argues that autotelism, defined as internal motivation, is an essential aspect of play and outlines how it can be incorporated in a computational framework. The work also demonstrates a proof-of-concept in the form of an autonomous drawing machine that is able to plot a drawing, view the drawing, and make decisions based on what it sees, bringing computational vision and computational drawing together into a cyclical process that permits the use of autotelic play behavior.

summary Choice overload is experienced when designers use generative systems to explore a large number of alternatives. In an experiment, we studied the epistemic actions designers perform to reduce their cognitive load caused by possible choice overload during design exploration. The participants were asked to select alternatives among a large set of solutions in a simulated design environment. For data encoding, we adapted an epistemic action analysis method to understand which actions occurs in what phase of design. Most epistemic actions are observed during criteria applying phase. The most frequent actions were 'clustering and grouping' and 'talking and gestures to guide attention'. Ultimately our goal is to answer if a system can alleviate the possible cognitive overload when working with a large number of alternatives, if so how they would look when implemented.

summary How do we know what we are looking at while viewing inside Building Information Modelling (BIM) models? Current architectural software typically provides disconnected methods of aiding spatial cognition. There is a strong history of navigation tools developed for controlling our exploration and movement in BIM models, a study by Ruby Darken and John Sibert (1993) found these tools had a strong influence on people's behaviour and understanding of digital space. People perceive and navigate space differently depending on their individual experience with a BIM model, designers and architects build up a detailed cognitive map during the design of a project, while other people have a less detailed comprehension of a project, having only been exposed to select views. This paper will outline key strategies to improve how people comprehend digital space, supporting people in understanding distance and size while inside BIM models. Three design research projects will be presented. The result of the projects define three strategies; Architectural wayshowing, interior-aware transitions, and distance confirmation. Architectural wayshowing needs to be implemented during the design phase, while the remaining two need to be introduced into BIM editing and viewing software.

summary Hygroscopically Actuated Granular Materials are a new class of designed granular materials in architecture. Granular materials are large numbers of particles that are only in loose contact with each other. If the individual particle in such a granular material is defined in its geometry and material make-up, one can speak of a designed granular material. In recent years these designed granular materials have been explored as architectural construction systems. Since the particles are not bound to each other, granular materials are rapidly reconfigurable and recyclable. Yet one of the biggest assets of designed granular materials is the fact that their overall behavior can be designed by altering the geometry or material make-up of the individual composing particles. Up until now mainly non-actuated granular materials have been investigated. These are designed granular materials in which the geometry of the particle stays the same over time. The proposed Hygroscopically Actuated Granular Materials are systems consisting of time-variable particle geometries. Their potential lies in the fact that one and the same granular system can be designed to display different mechanical behaviors over the course of time. The research presented here encompasses three case studies, which complement each other both with regard to the development of the particle system and the applied construction processes. All three cases are described both with regard to the methods used and the eventual outcome aiming at a potential design system for Hygroscopically Actuated Granular Materials. To conclude, these results are compared and directions of further research are indicated.

summary There has been significant research into large-scale 3D printing processes with industrial robots. These were initially used to extrude in a layered manner. In recent years, research has aimed to make use of six degrees of freedom instead of three. These so called "spatial extrusion" methods are based on a toolhead, mounted on a robot arm, that extrudes a material along a non horizontal spatial vector. This method is more time efficient but up to now has suffered from a number of limiting geometrical and structural constraints. This limited the formal possibilities to highly repetitive truss-like patterns. This paper presents a generalised approach to spatial extrusion based on the notion of discreteness. It explores how discrete computational design methods offer increased control over the organisation of toolpaths, without compromising design intent while maintaining structural integrity. The research argues that, compared to continuous methods, discrete methods are easier to prototype, compute and manufacture. A discrete approach to spatial printing uses a single toolpath fragment as basic unit for computation. This paper will describe a method based on a voxel space. The voxel contains geometrical information, toolpath fragments, that is subsequently assembled into a continuous, kilometers long path. The path can be designed in response to different criteria, such as structural performance, material behaviour or aesthetics. This approach is similar to the design of meta-materials - synthetic composite materials with a programmed performance that is not found in natural materials. Formal differentiation and structural performance is achieved, not through continuous variation, but through the recombination of discrete toolpath fragments. summary When designing interactive architectural systems and environments, the ability to gather user feedback in real time provides valuable insight into how the system is received and ultimately performs. However, physically testing or simulating user behavior with an interactive system outside of the actual context of use can be challenging due to time constraints and assumptions that do not reflect accurate social, behavioral, or environmental conditions. Employing evidence based, user-centered design practices from the field of human–computer interaction (HCI) coupled with emerging architectural design methodologies creates new opportunities for achieving optimal system performance and design usability for interactive architectural systems. This paper presents a methodology for developing a mixed reality computational workflow combining 3D depth sensing and virtual reality (VR) to enable iterative user-centered design. Using an interactive museum installation as a case study, user pointcloud data is observed via VR at full scale and in real time for a new design feedback experience. Through this method, the designer is able to virtually position him/herself among the museum installation visitors in order to observe their actual behaviors in context and iteratively make modifications instantaneously. In essence, the designer and user effectively share the same prototypical design space in different realities. Experimental deployment and preliminary results of the shared reality workflow are presented to demonstrate the viability of the method for the museum installation case study and for future interactive architectural design applications. Contributions to computational design, technical challenges, and ethical considerations are discussed for future work.

summary In the case of designers, architects and arts, tools are part of a repertoire of cognitive, symbolic, and semiotic artifacts with which each explores and learn about design problems. Nonetheless, when using digital fabrication tools, a dichotomy between what is ideated and what is made appears as an evident problem since many of the perceptual aspects of sensing and thinking about new things in the making are neglected. It is argued that this establishes a dichotomy between what is ideated and what is executed as an outcome from that idea. How designers can think, learn and augment their creativity by using digital tools in a more relational, exploratory, interactive and creative way? Furthermore, how can we teach design using contemporary fabrication tools beyond its representational capabilities? This paper explores the richness of using digital fabrication tools through the lens of shapes grammars as a design paradigm in order to extend computational making including digital fabrication tools, gestures and material behavior as crucial actors of the design process. Through the use of discrete heuristics - that is, the elaboration of deictic rules for computation with physical objects, materials and fabrication tools in a precise yet perceptual way- this paper shows experiments inside a third year design studio to overcome the hylomorphism present in the digital design and make dichotomy.

summary We introduce tangible immersion—virtual reality coupled with tangible interaction—to foster interdisciplinary collaboration in a critical yet creative design process. Integrating tangible, embodied interaction with geospatial modeling and immersive virtual environments (IVE) can make 3D modeling fast and natural, while enhancing it with realistic graphics and quantitative analytics. We have developed Tangible Landscape, a technology that links a physical model with a geographic information system and 3D-modeling platform through a real-time cycle of interaction, 3D scanning, geospatial computation, and 3D rendering. With this technology, landscape architects, other professionals, and the public can collaboratively explore design alternatives through an iterative process of intuitive ideation, geocomputational analysis, realistic rendering, and critical analysis. This is demonstrated with a test case for interdisciplinary problem-solving, in which a landscape architect and geoscientist use Tangible Landscape to collaboratively design landforms, hydrologic systems, planting, and a trail network for a brownfield site. Using this tangible immersive environment they rapidly explored alternative scenarios. We discuss how the participants used real-time analytics to collaboratively assess trade-offs between environmental and experiential factors, balancing landscape complexity, biodiversity, remediation capacity, and aesthetics. Together they explored how the relationship between landforms and natural processes affected the performance of the designed landscape. Technologies that couple tangible geospatial modeling with IVEs have the potential to transform the design process by breaking down disciplinary boundaries, but may also offer new ways to imagine space and democratize design.

summary This paper presents the development of a prototype for a new sensing device for anonymously evaluating space utilization, which includes usage factors such as occupancy levels, congregation and circulation patterns. This work builds on existing methods and technology for measuring building performance, human comfort and occupant experience in post-occupancy evaluations as well as pre-design strategic planning. The ability to collect data related to utilization and occupant experience has increased significantly due to the greater accessibility of sensor systems in recent years. As a result, designers are exploring new methods to empirically verify spatial properties that have traditionally been considered more qualitative in nature. With this premise, this study challenges current strategies that rely heavily on manual data collection and survey reports. The proposed sensing device is designed to supplement the traditional manual method with a new layer of automated, unbiased data that is capable of capturing environmental and social qualities of a given space. In a controlled experiment, the authors found that the data collected from the sensing device can be extrapolated to show how layout, spatial interventions or other design factors affect circulation, congregation, productivity, and occupancy in an office setting. In the future, this sensing device could provide designers with real-time feedback about how their designs influence occupants’ experiences, and thus allow the designers to base what are currently intuition-based decisions on reliable data and evidence.

summary This research builds upon a previous body of work focused on the relationship between surface geometry and heat transfer coefficients in thermal mass passive systems. It argues for the design of passive systems with higher fidelity to multivariable space between performance and perception. Rooted in the combination of form and matter, the intention is to instrumentalize design principles for the choreography of thermal gradients between buildings and their environment from experiential, spatial and topological perspectives (Figure 1). Our work is built upon the premise that complex geometries can be used to improve both the aesthetic and thermodynamic performance of passive building systems (Cupkova and Azel 2015) by actuating thermal performance through geometric parameters primarily due to convection. Currently, the engineering-oriented approach to the design of thermal mass relies on averaged thermal calculations (Holman 2002), which do not adequately describe the nuanced differences that can be produced by complex three-dimensional geometries of passive thermal mass systems. Using a combination of computational fluid dynamic simulations with physically measured data, we investigate the relationship of heat transfer coefficients related to parameters of surface geometry. Our measured results suggest that we can deliberately and significantly delay heat absorption re-radiation purely by changing the geometric surface pattern over the same thermal mass. The goal of this work is to offer designers a more robust rule set for understanding approximate thermal lag behaviors of complex geometric systems, with a focus on the design of geometric properties rather than complex thermal calculations.

summary We describe one of the three core use-pattern building blocks of a parametric approach to simulating use-patterns in buildings. Use-patterns are modeled as events which use specified descriptions of spaces, actors and activities which constitute them. The simulation system relies on three fundamental patterns of use - move, meet and do. The move pattern is considered in detail in this paper with specific reference to what we term the partial knowledge issue. Modeling decision making about how to move through the space (what path to take) depends on modeling the actor's partial access to knowledge. Visibility is used as an example of partial knowledge. The parametric approach described in the paper enables the clear separation of syntactical and semantic conditions which inform decisions and the coordination of decisions made by agents in a simulation of use-patterns. This approach contributes to extending the analytical capability of Building Information Models from the point of view of evaluating how a proposed building design may be used, given complex, interrelated patterns of use.

summary We now witness an upsurge in mainstream generative design tools fortified by simulation that speed up the concealed linear synthesis of optimized design alternatives. In pursuit of optimality, these tools saturate local machines or cloud servers with analysis and design iteration data, only to discard it once the procedure has concluded. Largely absent, however, are tools for an active, adaptive relationship with design exploration and the reuse of corresponding design data and metadata. In Pattern Making and Pattern Learning, we propose that these characteristics are mutually beneficial. This paper presents a series of revisions to the optimization framework for routine design synthesis that examine a potential symbiosis between the production of large datasets (big data) and non-routine practices of making in design. Our engagement with iterative design exercises is twofold: as a supply of computer-generated design information to foster user intuition and explore the design space on non-objective terms, and as a supply of human-generated design information to learn artifacts of user preference in the interest of design software personalization. These concepts are applied to the generation of functionally graded patterning in chair design, combining methods of physical production with programmable sheet material behavior through a custom interactive synthesis framework.

summary The expanding role of computational models in the process of design is producing exponential growth in parameter spaces. As designers, we must create and implement new methods for searching these parameter spaces, considering not only quantitative optimization metrics but also qualitative features. This paper proposes a methodology that leverages the pattern modeling properties of artificial neural networks to capture designers' inexplicit selection criteria and create user-selection-based fitness functions for a genetic solver. Through emulation of learned selection patterns, fitness functions based on trained networks provide a method for qualitative evaluation of designs in the context of a given population. The application of genetic solvers for the generation of new populations based on the trained network selections creates emergent high-density clusters in the parameter space, allowing for the identification of solutions that satisfy the designer’s inexplicit criteria. The results of an initial user study show that even with small numbers of training objects, a search tool with this configuration can begin to emulate the design criteria of the user who trained it.

summary In architectural education and practice, we don’t come in physical contact with what we make until the later stages of the design process. This vision-oriented approach to design is something deeply rooted in architectural practice: from Alberti’s window to the screens of our computers, design has traditionally been more of a visual and less of a hands-on process. The vision of the presented study is that if we want to understand the way we make in order to improve tools for computational design and making, we need to understand how our ability to make things is enhanced by both our visual and tactile mechanisms. Bringing the notion of active touch from psychology into the design studio, I design and execute a series of experiments investigating how seeing, touching, or seeing and touching exhibit different sensory competencies, and how these competencies are expressed through the process of making. The subjects of the experiment are asked to tactilely, visually, or tactilely and visually observe a three-dimensional object, create descriptions of its composition, and to remake it based on their experience of it using plastic materials. After the execution of the experiment, I analyze twenty-one reproductions of the original object; I point to ways in which touch can detect scale and proportions more accurately than vision, while vision can detect spatial components more efficiently than touch; I then propose ways in which this series of experiments can lead to the creation of new design and making tools.

summary Despite the advancement of digital design and fabrication technologies, design practices still follow Alberti’s hylomorphic model of separating the design phase from the construction phase. This separation hinders creativity and flexibility in reacting to surprises that may arise during the construction phase. These surprises often come as a result of a mismatch between the sophistication allowed by the digital technologies and the designer’s experience using them. These technologies and expertise depend on one human sense, vision, ignoring other senses that could be shaped and used in design and learning. Moreover, pedagogical approaches in the design studio have not yet fully integrated digital technologies as design companions; rather, they have been used primarily as tools for representation and materialization. This research introduces a multisensory computational model for human-machine making and learning. The model is based on a recursive process of embodied, situated, multisensory interaction between the learner, the machines and the thing-in-the-making. This approach depends heavily on computational making, abstracting, and describing the making process. To demonstrate its effectiveness, I present a case study from a course I taught at MIT in which students built full-scale, lightweight structures with embedded electronics. This model creates a loop between design and construction that develops students’ sensory experience and spatial reasoning skills while at the same time enabling them to use digital technologies as design companions. The paper shows that making can be used to teach design while enabling the students to make judgments on their own and to improvise.

summary Researchers attempt to offer new design tools and technologies to support design process facilitating alternative visualization and representation techniques. This paper describes a comparison study that took place in the Department of Architecture, at the Istanbul Technical University between 2016-2017. We compare when architects designed mass volumes of buildings in an marker-based mobile Augmented Reality (AR) application with that of when they used a collaborative 3D Virtual World. The massing strategy in the AR environment was an additive approach that is to collaboratively design the small parts to make the whole. Alignment and arrangement of the parts were not the main concerns of the designers in AR, instead the functional development of the design proposal, bodily engagements with the design representation, framing and re-framing of the given context and parameters become the discussion topics.

summary MAS can be utilized to analyse macro rules of whole system by simulating a number of active agents. However, simply based on the parameter of specific environment quality and incomplete statistical setting of individual, models of pedestrian traffic in realistic open space have often been imperfect, because the behaviour of people cannot be rationally reflected to the complex characteristic of space. Space Syntax Theory breaks down the space into components and measures each with the straight sight-line of individuals, which can help analyse and quantify pedestrian flow in complicated real-life environment. In this situation, we make an attempt to combine these two in our research, in order to simulate the moving of pedestrian closer to reality. In this paper, Gulou Square, an urban open space close to centre of the city with a large flow of people, is selected as the study site. The results after plenty of simulations and contrast tests can be concluded that with the assistance of Space Syntax Theory, MAS can be more functional solving the problems in sophisticated real-life environment.

summary GrowMorph is an ongoing research project that addresses the logic of bacterial cellular growth and its potential uses in architecture and design. While natural forms have always been an inspiration for human creativity, contemporary technology and scientific knowledge can allow us to advance the principle of biomimesis in striking new directions. By examining various patterns of bacterial growth, including their parametric logic, their use of responsive membranes and scaffolding structures, and their environmental fitness, this research creates new algorithmic design and construction models that can be applied through digital fabrication. Based on data from confocal microscopy, simulations were created using programming language Processing to model the environmental responses and morphology of the bacteria's growth. To demonstrate the utility of the results, the simulations created in this research were used to design an organically shaped pavilion and to suggest a new digital knitting process for material construction. The results from the study can inspire designers to make use of bacterial growth logic in their work, and provide them with practical tools for this purpose. Potential applications include novel designs for responsive surfaces, new fabrication processes, and unique spatial structures in future architectural work.

summary The growing consciousness regarding ecologically conscious architecture mandates a deeper understanding of the strategies that may be adopted by designers towards achieving this goal. With the advent of building information modelling (BIM) and the associated paradigm shift in the design process, it has become increasingly possible to make informed decisions earlier on in the design process. Despite this advancement, the architectural realm continues to lack computational resources that are capable of providing formal guidelines, through a generative process, that serve as a starting point for sustainable design. Towards overcoming this limitation, this paper will describe a computational tool that generates buildable performance envelopes in response to aspects of a site that are influential in designing sustainably: climate and context. These envelopes are created in a generative manner through the utilization of a voxel (three-dimensional pixel) matrix, which continually updates itself based on formal elements created by the user. Facilitating the process of making ecologically conscious design decisions at the earliest stages of design, which is the primary goal of this tool, more substantially increases the achieved energy optimization. Illustrative building designs presented in the paper resulting from the testing of this tool in contrasting climate zones, such as Miami, Florida (ASHRAE Zone 01) and Aspen, Colorado (ASHRAE Zone 07), confirms the assertion that the performance envelopes generated with this tool serve only as a guideline for optimized sustainable design, and not as the final form of the building itself.
