summary Within the field of digitally fabricated housing, the paper outlines a theoretical model for a housing system that combines complete off-site prefabrication with parametric assemblies. The paper then presents some insights on the application of snap-fit joints to the wall assemblies entirely fabricated using agricultural residue panels. Mechanical characterization of the material was performed through axial tension, compression and 4-point bending tests. Guidelines of plastics snap-fit design were applied to the joint design within the elastic limits of the material. Three different full scale wall typology prototypes were built using this jointing technique. The results show that while snap-fits can be a promising solution encouraging self-build in low-cost housing, the brittle nature of the specific agricultural residue panel material necessitates further joint enhancements.

title Macro-scale designs through topological deformations in the built environment

summary Design studies are being done on contemporary master-plans which may be applied in many locations worldwide. Advances in information technology are becoming the base model of design studies, and these may be more effective than the efforts of humans in the field of architecture and urban design. However, urban morphology variables and constants must be considered while designing contemporary master-plans in the existing built environment. The aims of this study were to extend the use of computer software for different applications and to make a topological work in the regional context. Accordingly, a case study was made using the nCloth simulation tools to create non-Euclidean forms while protecting the road system, which is one of the constant parameters of urban morphology in the built environment.

title Augmented Urban Experiences: Technologically Enhanced Design Research Methods for Revealing Hidden Qualities of the Built Environment

summary The built environment is a complex juxtaposition of static matter and dynamic flows, tangible objects and human experiences, physical realities and digital spaces. This paper offers an alternative understanding of those dichotomies by applying experimental design research strategies that combine objective quantification and subjective perception of urban contexts. The assumption is that layers of measurable datasets can be afforded with personal feedback to reveal "hidden" characteristics of cities. Drawing on studies from data and cognitive sciences, the proposed method allows us to analyze, quantify and visualize the individual experience of the built environment in relation to different urban qualities. By operating in between the scientific domain and the design realm, four design research experiments are presented. Leveraging augmenting and sensing technologies, these studies investigate: (1) urban attractors and user attention, employing eye-tracking technologies during walking; (2) urban proxemics and sensory experience, applying proximity sensors and EEG scanners in varying contexts; (3) urban mood and spatial perception, using mobile applications to merge tangible qualities and subjective feelings; and (4) urban vibe and paced dynamics, combining vibration sensing and observational data for studying city beats. This work demonstrates that, by adopting a multisensory and multidisciplinary approach, it is possible to gain a more human-centered, and perhaps novel understanding of the built environment. A lexicon of experimented urban situations may become a reference for studying different typologies of environments from the user experience, and provide a framework to support creative intuition for the development of more engaging, pleasant, and responsive spaces and places.

summary Every city has under utilized spaces that create a series of serious negative effects. Waiting for major interventions, those spaces can be reactivated and revitalized with soft temporary projects: micro interventions that light up the attention, give new meaning and add a new reading to abandoned spaces. We can call this kind of operations "plug-in design", inheriting the term from computer architecture: interventions which aim to involve the citizens and activate the environment, engage multiple catalyst processes and civil actions. Plug-in design interventions are by all meanings experimental, they seek for interaction with the users, locally and globally. Information Technology - with its parametric and site-specific capabilities and interactive features - can be instrumental to create such designs and generate a new consciousness of the existing environment. With this paper we will illustrate how two low-budget interventions have re-activated a forgotten public space. Parametric design with a specific script allowing site-specific design, materials and structure optimization and a series of interactive features, will be presented through Reciprocal 1.0 and Reciprocal 2.0 projects which have been built in 2016 in Italy by the nITro group.

summary Driven by technology, this multidisciplinary research focuses on the implementation of a photomechanical material into a reactive wearable that aims to protect the body from the ultraviolet radiation deriving from the sun. In this framework, the wearable becomes an active, supplemental skin that not only protects the human body but also augments its functions, such as movement and respiration. The embedded knowledge enables the smart material to sense and exchange data with the environment in order to passively actuate a system that regulates the relation between the body and its surroundings in an attempt to maintain equilibrium. The design strategy is defined by 4 sequential steps: a) The definition of the technical problem, b) the analysis of the human body, c) the design of the reactive material system, as well as d) the digital simulations and the digital fabrication of the system. The aforementioned design strategies allow for accuracy as well as high performance optimization and predictability in such complex design tasks, enabling the creation of customized products, designed for individuals.

summary This article discusses the methodology and results of the Maslow’s Palace workshops project, which engages with current debates surrounding the democratisation of digital urban design technology and stakeholder decision making, through the implementation of a speculative oriented approach to serious gaming. The research explores how serious games might be used to help marginalised communities consider past, future and present community experiences, reconcile dissimilar assumptions, generate social capital building and design responses and prime participants for further long-term design engagement processes through a new approach called Speculative Participatory Serious Urban Gaming. Empirical material for this research was gathered from a range of case study workshops prepared with three landfill-based communities and external partners throughout 2017. Results show the approach helped participants develop shared norms, values and collective understandings of sensitive topics and develop ideas for future action through ‘collective tinkering.

summary New technologies and uncontrolled open-data policies lead public to a new way of approaching the built environment. To enlarge the competences of the professionals that work within the cities, we believe that providing a deep and dynamic knowledge on the heritage and urban built environment is the more effective solution to offer a unique support to the needs. By providing a boosted geographical database with detailed information about the status of each building, we aim to support the professional by providing a neat vision about vacant buildings available citywide. We think this knowledge is an important asset in covering every kind of public requests: from flat to rent to an abandoned building to restore or to drive better investors. The city of Trento will be the pilot project to test these statements.We studied the phenomenon of pushing new constructions rather investing on the reuse of abandoned buildings with the consequences of unsustainable land use. To address the work we adopted a comprehensive approach across the fields of urbanism, ICT engineering and social sciences. We believe that sharing knowledge and know-hows with municipalities, agencies, and citizens is the way to support better market strategies as well as urban transformation policies.

summary This paper presents the development of a prototype for a new sensing device for anonymously evaluating space utilization, which includes usage factors such as occupancy levels, congregation and circulation patterns. This work builds on existing methods and technology for measuring building performance, human comfort and occupant experience in post-occupancy evaluations as well as pre-design strategic planning. The ability to collect data related to utilization and occupant experience has increased significantly due to the greater accessibility of sensor systems in recent years. As a result, designers are exploring new methods to empirically verify spatial properties that have traditionally been considered more qualitative in nature. With this premise, this study challenges current strategies that rely heavily on manual data collection and survey reports. The proposed sensing device is designed to supplement the traditional manual method with a new layer of automated, unbiased data that is capable of capturing environmental and social qualities of a given space. In a controlled experiment, the authors found that the data collected from the sensing device can be extrapolated to show how layout, spatial interventions or other design factors affect circulation, congregation, productivity, and occupancy in an office setting. In the future, this sensing device could provide designers with real-time feedback about how their designs influence occupants’ experiences, and thus allow the designers to base what are currently intuition-based decisions on reliable data and evidence.

summary This article presents the level of adoption of BIM in Chile referring to recent studies carried out in the country, demonstrating that there has not been a significant increase in the use of this methodology by the industry. According to the analysis of international cases on educational frameworks, the authors argue that the development of a national education strategy for BIM with a focus on defining BIM capabilities required to assume the national mandate 2020, along with promoting collaborative work environments and active learning methodologies would be very beneficial.

summary This article discusses the Brazilian architecture professional devaluation, identifying factors that contribute to a process of disqualification. It provides the basis for possible reflections by architecture councils. Authors pointed out that the BIM evolution would lead to unexplored fields, such as standards to increase project quality. The study suggests the development of an instrument that certifies services, methodologies and teams positively positioned in the contemporary demands of the AEC sector. By incorporating existing standards, the technology is justified as the basis, allowing this quality to be extended to contractors, reinforcing the multidisciplinary character with its involved professional’s responsibility.

summary Fueled by long-standing dreams of both material efficiency and aesthetic liberation, robots have become part of mainstream architectural discourses, raising the question: How may we nurture an ethos of visual, tactile, and spatial exploration in technologies that epitomize the legacies of industrial automation—for example, the pursuit of managerial efficiency, control, and an ever-finer subdivision of labor? Reviewing and extending a growing body of research on architectural robotics pedagogy, and bridging a constructionist tradition of design education with recent studies of science and technology, this article offers both a conceptual framework and concrete strategies to incorporate robots into architectural design education in ways that foster a spirit of exploration and discovery, which is key to learning creative design. Through reflective accounts of three learning experiences, we introduce the notions “assisted automation” and “robotic embodiment” as devices to enrich current approaches to robot–human design, highlighting situated and embodied aspects of designing with robotic machines.

summary The restoration of ancient machinery involves a number of aspects, including manufacturing procedure, materials, and scales. Portions that cannot be confirmed should be regarded as variable parameters of the reconstructed design, and therefore, there is no single result. The goal of reconstruction is to establish a prototype of ancient machinery with its mechanical engineering techniques and crafts. The problem of this study is how digital fabrication tools used in architectural design can be applied to the reconstruction of ancient machinery with the water-powered armillary and celestial tower as an example. The objective was to synthesize results that comply with historical records in a systematic, modularized, and parameterized manner and consider the feasibility of using modern digital fabrication and materials. With the procedure, we can reduce the difficulty of ancient machinery reconstruction and provide a reference for the reconstruction designs of ancient mechanical technology and crafts, and mass production made of different materials and scales in the future.

summary This article describes an augmented reality exposition of three Brazilian World Expo pavilions. The study of Expo pavilions allow us to perceive several historic and cultural narratives embodied in those designs. The selected pavilions were from 1939 New York World’s Fair (by Oscar Niemeyer and Lucio Costa), 1958 Brussels World’s Fair (by Sergio Bernardes) and 1970 Osaka Expo ’70 (by Paulo Mendes da Rocha). The exposition is going to be held at the main campus of UFRJ, using Layar technology with minor adaptations to show the models in natural scale along with their corresponding information, discussing locative media opportunities regarding Architecture and Virtual Heritage.

summary The term Building Information Model emerged in 1992. It has evolved over time and has its meaning currently associated with an object-oriented modeling technology and an associated set of processes to produce, communicate and analyze building models. Its origin is related to several other, older terms. This paper registers the evolution of BIM and related definitions over time by means of a systematic literature review. We present a list of BIM-related terms and their meanings, organized by date of emergence, and charts showing which ones are most used over time, contributing to better understanding of the meaning of BIM.

Looking into Nature's lessons, this paper presents a Nature-based design methodology conducted during Kine[SIS]tem'17 Shading Systems International Summer School, held by the ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, Portugal, between 19th - 30th June 2017. The methodology encompasses two main stages, one before and other during the Summer School. From a pre-definition of context constrains, a nature based design strategy, to a planning of the manufacture and construction still during the phase of development of the design, conducted the Summer School participants through a defined biomimetic process that achieved the construction of 1:1 scale prototype.

summary This paper provides a theoretical discourse on ontological instruments in design by exploring the ways in which design and technology might help get us back to an understanding of our own humanity. The intent of this theoretical discourse is to illuminate the possibilities of what can be, by looking at history as a way to see the world with perspective and as a predictor of what may happen. Another objective is to demonstrate the proof of those possibilities through the presentation of two design research projects which actualize those ideas. The first project is a prototype for an interactive chair that explores the calming effects of conscious and synchronized breathing. The second project is a reinterpretation of the veil and explores the relationship between the individual and the public. Both projects are artistic and performative in character and are embedded in a theoretical discourse on ontological instruments and investigate the opportunities of interaction of the human body with the environment moderated by technology.

summary This project intends to introduce the maker culture into traditional education. The goal is to make technology teaching available in elementary education in a fast, cheap and egalitarian way, seeking to democratize its access and use it to integrate maker culture's principles into traditional school. For that several existing makerspaces and fab labs programs’ were studied to identify the core activities and equipments to support this proposal. Its contribution is an adaptable modular system with a demountable construction platform to foster customized spaces. The system is manufactured to enable the expansion and retraction of the structure allowing its future reuse.

summary The consequences of automation technology on industry are currently widely discussed in terms of future tasks, work organisation and working environments. Even though various novel education programmes specialise in digital fabrication, relatively little has been written on concepts for a deeper integration of digital technologies in the architectural curriculum. This paper gives an overview of interdisciplinary educational approaches and digital project development techniques and describes a teaching method featuring intensive collaboration with research and industry, an iterative teaching method employing digital production of large-scale prototypes and a moderated self-learning process. We describe two examples of teaching initiatives in particular that were undertaken at TU Munich and ETH Zurich and analyse their results in terms of physical outcomes, teaching accomplishments, resource efficiency and connection to research. We discuss the relationship between necessary teaching intensity, project size and complexity of digital fabrication equipment and conclude by giving an outlook for future initiatives.

summary Internet of Things, pervasive nets, Knowledge ‘on tap’, Big Data, Wearable devices and the ‘Third wave’ of AI are disruptive technologies that are upsetting our globalised world as far as it can be foreseen from now. So academicians, professionals, researchers, innovation factories... are warmly invited to further shake up and boost our innovative and beloved CAAD world with new ideas, paradigms and points of view. Will our fine buildings and design traditions survive? Or, will they ‘simply’ be hybridized and enhanced by methods, techniques and CAAD tools? Obviously computation is needed to match the evergrowing performance requirements, but this is not enough to answer all these questions we have to deal with the essence of problems: improve design solutions for a better life. As life is not a matter of single individuals, we need to increase collaboration and to improve knowledge sharing. This means taking care of human beings, and involves a humanistic approach, and the long history of humankind ... from humans to thinking to technology ... and vice versa. A circle of human beings as eternal as our city.
