summary Association rule mining is one of several approaches in game design for discovering correlations among user-generated content items. This paper aims to aid the digital heritage field by analysing user preferences in interactive environments designed for participatory cultural heritage making. Textual and diagrammatic explication of the feedback mechanism introduces the universalization of the knowledge gained in this research that is supported with the outcome of a workshop which offered two gamified interactive environments. Three key pleasures of cyberspace in digital heritage are extended from immersion to meaningful experience and to transformation. User-generated content engenders meaningful correlations that help improve and evaluate digital heritage applications. Qualitative findings explicate the relationship of ‘The Museum of Gamers’ with the authenticity issue. This paper is among the first to investigate the association rule finding methods in relation to indexical authenticity in digital heritage.

summary New technologies and uncontrolled open-data policies lead public to a new way of approaching the built environment. To enlarge the competences of the professionals that work within the cities, we believe that providing a deep and dynamic knowledge on the heritage and urban built environment is the more effective solution to offer a unique support to the needs. By providing a boosted geographical database with detailed information about the status of each building, we aim to support the professional by providing a neat vision about vacant buildings available citywide. We think this knowledge is an important asset in covering every kind of public requests: from flat to rent to an abandoned building to restore or to drive better investors. The city of Trento will be the pilot project to test these statements.We studied the phenomenon of pushing new constructions rather investing on the reuse of abandoned buildings with the consequences of unsustainable land use. To address the work we adopted a comprehensive approach across the fields of urbanism, ICT engineering and social sciences. We believe that sharing knowledge and know-hows with municipalities, agencies, and citizens is the way to support better market strategies as well as urban transformation policies.

summary In the last few years, building renovation has gained an unprecedented relevance in Portugal, yet it is an asymmetric and urban phenomenon for the study of which, in space and in time, traditional statistic tools have limitations. Using computational tools, it is possible to generate maps that correlate building permits georeferenced data and their processing time. Using Lisbon City Hall database of planning applications and georeferenced vector information, two approaches are developed to represent the internal dynamic of renewal of the city between 2010 and 2016. These maps can be useful to improve the accessibility of planning information to citizens.

summary Cities are continuously produced through entropic processes that mediate between complex networked systems and the immediacy urban life. Emergent media technologies inform new relationships between information and matter, code and space to redefine new urban ecosystems. Modes of perceiving, experiencing and inhabiting cities are radically changing along with a radical transformation of the tools that we use to design. Cities as complex and systemic organisms require approaches that engage new multi-scalar strategies to connect the physical layer with the system of networked ecologies. This paper aims at investigating emerging and novel forms of reading and producing urban spaces reimagining the physical city through intelligent and mediated processes. Through data agency and responsive urban processes, the design methodology explored the materialization of a temporary pneumatic structure and membrane that tested material performance through fabrication and sensing practices through the pneuSENSE project developed in July 2016 in New York at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during the 'HyperCities' IaaC- Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia - Global Summer School.

summary The paper discusses 23 interviewed architects in practice about the role of traditional and digital sketching (human-computer interaction) in communication with the client. They were selected from 1995 to 2018 (the interval of graduation) from three different countries: the Czech Republic (CR), Slovakia (SR), Netherland (NR). To realize three blending areas that impact the approach to sketching: (I) Traditional hand and physical model studies (1995-2003). (II)Transition form - designing by hand and PC (2004–2017). (III) Mainly digital and remote forms of designing (2018–now). Interviews helped transform 31 “parameters of tools use” from the previous theoretical framework narrowed down into six main areas: (1) Implementation; (2)Affordability; (3)Timesaving; (4) Drawing support; (5) Representativeness; (6) Transportability. Paper discusses findings from interviewees: (A) Implementation issues are above time and price. (B) Strongly different understanding of what digital sketching is. From drawing in Google Slides by mouse to sketching in Metaverse. (C) Substantial reduction of traditional sketching (down to a total of 3% of the time) at the expense of growing responsibilities. (D) 80% of respondents do not recommend sketching in front of the client. Also, other interesting findings are further described in the discussion.

summary This paper focuses on the realization of three-dimensionally interwoven concrete structures and their design process. The output is part of an ongoing research in developing an innovative strategy for the use of robotics in construction. The robotic fabrication techniques described in this paper are coupled with the computational methods dealing with geometry rationalization and material constraints among others. By revisiting the traditional bar bending techniques, this research aims to develop a novel approach by the reduction of mechanical parts for retaining control over the desired geometrical output. This is achieved by devising a robotic tool-path, developed in KUKA|prc with Python scripting, where fundamental material properties, including tolerances and spring-back values, are integrated in the bending motion methods via a series of mathematical calculations in accord with physical tests. This research serves to demonstrate that robotic integration while efficient in manufacturing it also retains valid alignment with the architectural design sensibility.

summary With the rapid advances in technology, virtual reality(VR) re-emerged as an affordable technology providing new potentials for virtual learning environments(VLE). Within the scope of this study, firstly a general perspective on potentials of VR to create an appropriate VLE is put forward regarding the potentials related with learning modalities. Then, VR as a VLE in architectural education is discussed and utilization of VR is revisited considering the fundamentals of education as how to enhance skills regarding creativity, furnish students to adopt future skills and how VR can be used to enhance design understanding as well as space perception and spatial relations. It is deliberated that instead of mirroring the real spaces, allowing students to understand the virtuality with its own constituents will broaden the understanding of space, spatial relations, scale, motion, and time both in physical and virtual. The dichotomy between physical and virtual materiality, the potentials and pitfalls in the process of transformation from real/physical to virtual - virtual to real/physical are discussed in relation with the student projects designed in the scope of Digital Design Studio course in Middle East Technical University. It is also shown that VR stimulates different learning modalities especially kinesthetic modality and helping students to develop creativity and metacognition about space and spatial relations.

summary The paper presents research on how Building Information Modelling (BIM) can be applied comprehensively throughout the design of an architectural project. A practical method based on BIM models that help to deal with multidisciplinary issues by integrating the design information from different sources, collaborators and project stages is formulated by adopting existing available tools. The ‘Tiantian Square’ building project in Wuhan, China combines a subway station with a commercial hug. According to the project’s size and complexity, our study focuses on the multiple cooperation of professionals from different backgrounds, including the departments of architectural design, structure (civil engineering), HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning), water supply and drainage, and electrics and sustainable design. Our paper presents how the BIM model bridges between various simulation platforms through our technical system and management, including steps of transformation, simplification, analysis, reaction and improvement. Our research has helped to improve the overall efficiency and quality of the project. We generated a successful analysis-design approach for the initial design stages, which does not require in-depth analysis. It is a practical method to immediately evaluate the performance for each design alternative and provide guidelines for design modification. Finally, we discuss how the coordination of different department becomes a crucial factor as we look forward to a more open, communicative and inter-relational design and development process.

summary This research focuses on the transformation from design to fabrication without CAD models. In contrast to the conventional "design - modeling - fabrication" workflow, which involves multiple software, we experimented with a method of programming the bespoke fabrication process, and consequently defining the artifact. Algebraic models are employed to specify the materialization process carried out by various CNC machines. We used the programming language Java to create machine instructions for 3D printers, milling machines, and robots. In this method, design and production are not two separated processes; rather we regarded them as two aspects of one whole activity. Proficiency in machines and materials could contribute to design innovation.

summary This paper presents a design framework for free-form transformation of kinetic, spatial bar structures using computational design techniques. Spatial bar structures considered as deployable, transformable kinetic structures composed of straight, linear members, assembled in a three-dimensional configuration. They are often utilised in portable, mobile or transformable buildings. Transformable systems of spatial bar structures are mostly based on modification of primitive shapes (e.g. box, sphere, and cylinder). Each system is subdivided into multiple members having the same shape, the so-called kinetic blocks. Some diverse precedents made to develop other forms of transformation of these structures with some issues. This research project will investigate how a free-form transformation of spatial bar systems can be achieved, by redesigning the kinetic block in relation to architectural, technical parameters. In order to develop a physical prototype of the kinetic block, and assess its potential in enabling free-form transformation of a spatial bar system, a design framework incorporating parametric, algorithmic and kinetic design strategies is required. The proposed design workflow consists of three main phases: form-finding, stability validation and actuation.

summary There has been significant research into large-scale 3D printing processes with industrial robots. These were initially used to extrude in a layered manner. In recent years, research has aimed to make use of six degrees of freedom instead of three. These so called "spatial extrusion" methods are based on a toolhead, mounted on a robot arm, that extrudes a material along a non horizontal spatial vector. This method is more time efficient but up to now has suffered from a number of limiting geometrical and structural constraints. This limited the formal possibilities to highly repetitive truss-like patterns. This paper presents a generalised approach to spatial extrusion based on the notion of discreteness. It explores how discrete computational design methods offer increased control over the organisation of toolpaths, without compromising design intent while maintaining structural integrity. The research argues that, compared to continuous methods, discrete methods are easier to prototype, compute and manufacture. A discrete approach to spatial printing uses a single toolpath fragment as basic unit for computation. This paper will describe a method based on a voxel space. The voxel contains geometrical information, toolpath fragments, that is subsequently assembled into a continuous, kilometers long path. The path can be designed in response to different criteria, such as structural performance, material behaviour or aesthetics. This approach is similar to the design of meta-materials - synthetic composite materials with a programmed performance that is not found in natural materials. Formal differentiation and structural performance is achieved, not through continuous variation, but through the recombination of discrete toolpath fragments. summary This paper presents progress in the development of practical applications for graph representations of meshes for a variety of problems relevant to generative architectural design (GAD). In previous work (Nejur and Steinfeld 2016), the authors demonstrated that while approaches to marrying mesh and graph representations drawn from computer graphics (CG) can be effective within the domains of applications for which they have been developed, they have not adequately addressed wider classes of problems in GAD. There, the authors asserted that a generalized framework for working with graph representations of meshes can effectively bring recent advances in mesh segmentation to bear on GAD problems, a utility demonstrated through the development of a plug-in for the visual programming environment Grasshopper. Here, we describe a number of implemented solutions to mesh segmentation and transformation problems, articulated as a series of additional features developed as a part of this same software. Included are problems of mesh segmentation approached through the creation of acyclic connected graphs (trees); problems of mesh transformations, such as those that unfold a segmented mesh in anticipation of fabrication; and problems of geometry generation in relation to a segmented mesh, as demonstrated through a generalized approach to mesh weaving. We present these features in the context of their potential applications in GAD and provide a limited set of examples for their use.

summary This paper is situated in a specific research by design setting, where the realised work of architecture has been generated with digital tools operated by analogue minds of designers. It examines the relation- ship between the two entities, the designer and the tools, in an attempt to understand their specific roles better, trusting that this can lead to anew ways of enhancing the design process. Through revisiting the processes, methods, techniques and tools employed within various design-cycles of the project, authors present their own /designerly/ experience, pointing to both the potentials and limitations of the digital tools used. The attention is drawn to the importance for a human designer to have a critical awareness of the true nature of the computational systems and the capacity of both to adapt to the given context, in order to be able to embrace them and use to their full potentials.

summary This paper presents strategies for the creation of large-scale transformable structures. In particular we work to leverage material properties and novel construction techniques to induce transformation. We employ flexible biaxial braided geometries to create interconnected large-scale textile surfaces. These braided networks distribute load forces via their internal friction, allowing for uniform structural transformation without the need for complicated mechanical linkages or electromechanical actuation. The ultimate range of these structures has been simulated with computational tools and correlated with physical load testing. We present various applications and configurations of these transforming structures that demonstrate their utility and a new attitude toward the creation of lightweight morphable structures.

title Revisiting Parquet Deformations from a computational perspective: A novel method for design and analysis

summary Parquet Deformation is an architectural studio exercise introduced by William Huff in 1960s. It aims to improve students’ reasoning of spatiotemporal variation by utilizing sequential shapeshifting of patterns. This article examines the outcomes of this educational research from a perspective of design computing with a purpose to remark its pedagogical significance. A multilayered reading about the exercise will reveal its historical, theoretical, and artistic backgrounds. Then the common structural elements and different construction approaches are explained along with a novel design and analysis method. The proposed method embeds variations of two-dimensional pattern deformations on a third dimension. It enables various analyses such as the measurement of regularity and locating the attractor points. This study is expected to exemplify how computational thinking and new digital tools change the way designers would approach to such systematic compositions.

summary In an attempt to design shape-morphing multifunctional objects, this thesis uses programmable matter to design self-organizing multi-agent systems capable of morphing from one shape into another. The research looks at various precedents of self-assembly and modular robotics to design and prototype passive agents that could be cheaply mass-produced. Intelligence will be embedded into these agents on a material level, designing different local interactions to perform different global goals. The initial exploratory study looks at various examples from nature like plankton and molecules. Magnetic actuation is chosen as the external actuation force between agents. The research uses simultaneous digital and physical investigations to understand and design the interactions between agents. The project offers a systemic investigation of the effect of shape, interparticle forces, and surface friction on the packing and reconfiguration of granular systems. The ability to change the system state from a gaseous, liquid, then solid state offers new possibilities in the field of material computation, where one can design a "material" and change its properties on demand.

summary This paper proposes and examines a new way of cooperation between human workers and machine intelligence in architectural scale construction. For the transfer of construction information between the physical and digital world, mature technologies such as Radio Frequency IDentifier (RFID), and emerging technologies like Augmented Reality (AR) are used in parallel to supplement each other. Dynamic data flow is implemented to synchronize digital and physical models by following the ID signatures of individual building parts. The contributions of this paper includes the demonstration of current technological limitations, and the proposal of a hybrid system between human and computer, which is tested in order to explore the possibilities of digitally enhanced construction methods.

summary The rise in robotics is not only changing fabrication research in architecture but increasingly providing opportunities for animating the materiality of architecture, offering responsive, performative and adaptive design possibilities for the built environment. A fundamental challenge with robotics is its suitability to safe, and comfortable use in proximity to the human body. Here we present the preliminary results of the Roamniture Project, a hybrid approach to developing kinetic architecture based on a combination of rigid and soft body dynamics.

title Building Information Modeling data interoperability for Cloud-based collaboration: Limitations and opportunities

summary Collaboration within Building Information Modeling process is mainly based on the manual transfer of document files in either vendor-specific formats or neutral format using Industry Foundation Classes. However, since the web enables Cloud-based Building Information Modeling services, it provides an opportunity to exchange data with web technologies. Alternative data sharing solutions include the federation of Building Information Modeling models and an interchange hub for data exchange in real time. These solutions face several challenges, are vendor locked, and integrate Building Information Modeling applications to a third new system. The main objective of this article is to investigate current limitations as well as opportunities of Cloud interoperability to outline a framework for a loosely coupled network-based Building Information Modeling data interoperability. This study explains that Cloud-Building Information Modeling data exchange needs to deploy major components of Cloud interoperability such as Cloud application programming interfaces, data transfer protocols, data formats, and standardization to redefine Building Information Modeling data flow in Cloud-based applications and to reshape collaboration process.

summary This paper presents the experience of the first phase of remodeling existing historical and colonial district in Bandung, Indonesia, including existing building façade, streetscape and street furniture. Braga Street is chosen as study case because it is a well-known historical street in Bandung with art deco style buildings constructed during Dutch colonial era. By remodeling it, it could help stakeholders to evaluate existing Braga street condition, to test any modification of buildings along the street and to determine specific regulation for the street. In this case, we use Unity3D and Oculus Rift DK2 for remodeling current situation. We gathered feedback from respondents using a questionnaire given after they experienced the model in VR. Many lessons learned from modeling process and respondents' feedback: higher frame rate to make seamless VR experience by having all components on a low poly model and provide smoother movement to prevent visual discomfort. This paper's conclusion gives suggestions for anyone who want to start architecture modeling in virtual reality for the very first time and how to optimize it.
