summary Recent developments in Additive Manufacturing are creating possibilities to make not only rapid prototypes, but directly manufactured customised components. This paper investigates the potential for combining standard building materials with customised nodes that are individually optimised in response to local load conditions in non-standard, irregular, or doubly curved frame structures. This research iteration uses as a vehicle for investigation the SmartNodes Pavilion, a temporary structure with 3D printed nodes built for the 2015 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture in Hong Kong. The pavilion is the most recent staged output of the SmartNodes Project. It builds on the findings in earlier iterations by introducing topologically constrained node forms that marry the principals of the evolved optimised node shape with topological constraints imposed to meet the printing challenges. The 4m high canopy scale prototype structure in this early design research iteration represents the node forms using plastic Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM).

summary With the use of the concept Central Activities Zone in the Shanghai City Master Plan (2017-2035) to replace the traditional concept of Central Business District, core areas such as Shanghai Lujiazui will be given more connotations in the future construction and development. In the context of todays continuous urbanization and high-speed capital flow, how to identify the development status and vitality characteristics is a prerequisite for creating a high-quality Central Activities Zone. Taking Shanghai Lujiazui sub-district etc. as an example, the vitality value of weekday and weekend as well as 19 indexes including density of functional facilities and building morphology is quantified by obtaining multi-source big data. Meanwhile, the correlation between various indexes and the vitality characteristics of the Central Activities Zone are tried to summarize in this paper. Finally, a neural network regression model is built to bridge the design scheme and vitality values to realize the prediction of the vitality of the Central Activities Zone. The data analysis method proposed in this paper is versatile and efficient, and can be well integrated into the urban big data platform and the City Information Modeling, and provides reliable reference suggestions for the real-time evaluation of future urban construction.

summary This paper presents design research speculating on new planning approaches for informal urban sites that enables coordinated planning to operate within the realm of spontaneous, bottom-up redevelopment. In opposition to the /tabula rasa/ Modernist development, this project reacts to the dynamic metabolism of the village and engages with the rapid turnover of the built environment of the village as a mechanism through which to implement incremental redevelopment. A radical reorientation of the object of masterplanning, this replaces the singular image or document as the guiding authority with a collection of opportunistic adaptations, temporal sequences, and localized procedures. Enabling this approach is a computational approach that analyzes the morphology of the public space network to identify opportunities to address issues in the composition of the village. A multiagent system driven by weighted random walks through the circulation network conducts local analyses of the urban fabric while changes are made and proposes potential modifications to discrete areas. The model simulates the potential for such a planning tool to be used over a long time span and updated with empirically gathered data, having the benefit of flexibility and resilience in the face of the changing and unregulated conditions in the context of informal urbanism.

summary This article reflects about creation, through the analysis of joints and furniture that are easily assembly and disassembly destined for young people in constant territorial displacement situations. Obtained by digital fabrication in the largest public network of free Fab Labs in the world, which is provided by the City Hall of São Paulo and the maker culture present in these units. Thus, are used, bibliographic and iconographic analysis and drawings for a better understanding of this furniture that had as reference for the analysis the following books: Nomadic Furniture volumes 1 and 2 written by Victor Papanek and James Hennessey.

summary Every city has under utilized spaces that create a series of serious negative effects. Waiting for major interventions, those spaces can be reactivated and revitalized with soft temporary projects: micro interventions that light up the attention, give new meaning and add a new reading to abandoned spaces. We can call this kind of operations "plug-in design", inheriting the term from computer architecture: interventions which aim to involve the citizens and activate the environment, engage multiple catalyst processes and civil actions. Plug-in design interventions are by all meanings experimental, they seek for interaction with the users, locally and globally. Information Technology - with its parametric and site-specific capabilities and interactive features - can be instrumental to create such designs and generate a new consciousness of the existing environment. With this paper we will illustrate how two low-budget interventions have re-activated a forgotten public space. Parametric design with a specific script allowing site-specific design, materials and structure optimization and a series of interactive features, will be presented through Reciprocal 1.0 and Reciprocal 2.0 projects which have been built in 2016 in Italy by the nITro group.

summary This paper demonstrates a workflow converting terrestrial laser scan (TLS) data into an interactive virtual reality (VR) platform. A VR exhibition prototype of Lincoln Cathedral was created to validate the established workflow in terms of the technical and visual performance, usability, and functionality. It combined TLS data and storytelling to produce a shareable platform, inviting opportunities for public engagement, and to facilitate custodians with the tools to maintain the building’s heritage. The paper discusses the use of open sourcesoftware and suggests future work.

summary New technologies and uncontrolled open-data policies lead public to a new way of approaching the built environment. To enlarge the competences of the professionals that work within the cities, we believe that providing a deep and dynamic knowledge on the heritage and urban built environment is the more effective solution to offer a unique support to the needs. By providing a boosted geographical database with detailed information about the status of each building, we aim to support the professional by providing a neat vision about vacant buildings available citywide. We think this knowledge is an important asset in covering every kind of public requests: from flat to rent to an abandoned building to restore or to drive better investors. The city of Trento will be the pilot project to test these statements.We studied the phenomenon of pushing new constructions rather investing on the reuse of abandoned buildings with the consequences of unsustainable land use. To address the work we adopted a comprehensive approach across the fields of urbanism, ICT engineering and social sciences. We believe that sharing knowledge and know-hows with municipalities, agencies, and citizens is the way to support better market strategies as well as urban transformation policies.

summary This paper introduces the theoretical considerations underlying the design of a digitally designed and Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) fabricated public installation project in the city of Austin, Texas. The project, The Creek Zipper, is an assemblage of exo?related units that symbolically reconnects two divided city neighborhoods, establishes a new relationship between the synthetic and natural, and inflates a two?dimensional graphic into a three?dimensional form. The project can be clearly read as a whole from a distance, but as one approaches, the legibility of each part begins to overwhelm the perception of the whole. As the form of the whole dissipates, the project gains a field?like presence, revealing different sets of discrete figures nested within the larger whole. The Creek Zipper addresses these multiple overlapping dichotomies that act as design generators and promote a dynamic expression of the project.

summary Digital fabrication has transformed the way buildings are constructed by applying methods such as friction-fit connection. This technique has been propagated by WikiHouse which aims to develop open building technologies to different environmental contexts. However, the indiscriminate use of the model may result in inefficiency of housing performance. This work, therefore, investigates solutions for adapting WikiHouses to the tropics, according to principles proposed by Armando de Holanda in ‘A Guide to Build in Northeast Brazil’. Nevertheless, difficulties related to certain adaptations were observed such as connections compatibility and design of large open spaces, especially because these systems depend on a maximum size of parts.

summary The research presented in this paper seeks to examine how architecture and computational tools can be used to communicate on multiple levels by incorporating a series of qualitative and quantitative measures as criteria for a spatial and architectural design. Air is taken as a material that has the capacity to create boundaries, yet unless under extreme conditions often remains invisible. Varying in qualities such as temperature, humidity and pollution, the status of air is highly local to a particular context. The research explores how rendering air visible through an architectural intervention made of networked sentient prototypes can be used in the reation of a responsive outdoor public space. Although humans' ability to perceive and respond to stimuli is highly advanced, it is nevertheless limited in its spectrum. Within the urban context specifically, the information, material and flux being produced is becoming ever more complex and incomprehensible. While computational tools, sensors and data are increasingly accessible, advancements in the fields of cognitive sciences and biometrics are unraveling how the mind and body works. These developments are explored in tandem and applied through a proposed methodology. The project aims to negotiate the similarities and differences between humans and machines with respect to the urban environment. The hypothesis is that doing so will create a rich output, irreducible to a singular reading while heightening user experience and emphasizing a sense of place.

summary The Modern Heritage in Aracaju is still a little researched subject and the available works need to be reviewed and expanded. This paper presents the first results of a work dedicated to the analysis and registration of the Modern Heritage as a resilient action to the losses suffered, so that this heritage will resist in time and persist in the memory, enabling future research and conservation actions. The case study was the Hora Oliveira residence, which was modeled using Revit © from the development of a template, in which information about original materials and pathologies present in the building were inserted.

summary The presence of web2.0 and traceable mobile devices creates new opportunities for urban designers to understand cities through an analysis of user-generated data. The emergence of “big data” has resulted in a large amount of information documenting daily events, perceptions, thoughts, and emotions of citizens, all annotated with the location and time that they were recorded. This data presents an unprecedented opportunity to gauge public opinion about the topic of interest. Natural language processing with social media is a novel tool complementary to traditional survey methods. In this paper, we validate these methods using tourism data from Trip-Advisor in Andorra. “Natural language processing” (NLP) detects patterns within written languages, enabling researchers to infer sentiment by parsing sentences from social media. We applied sentiment analysis to reviews of tourist attractions and restaurants. We found that there were distinct geographic regions in Andorra where amenities were reviewed as either uniformly positive or negative. For example, correlating negative reviews of parking availability with land use data revealed a shortage of parking associated with a known traffic congestion issue, validating our methods. We believe that the application of NLP to social media data can be a complementary tool for urban decision making.

summary A great amount of information needs to be managed along the building life cycle in order to fulfil building codes, standards and regulations, client and user requirements. However, a lack of transparency in the information management and a lack of communication between stakeholders often bring to the adoption of solutions in the design process that do not meet the original requirements. Therefore, an ordered structure for information improves its storage, enhancing its visibility, traceability, usability and re-usability. In addition, for public works contracts and design contests, the use of specific electronic tools, such as building information electronic modelling tools, is often required for the information management. The paper presents the efforts devoted within the Italian building sector for proposing a standardized structure and developing tools for collecting, sharing and exchanging information between stakeholders involved in different stages of the building process. An enhanced use of information relying on the adoption of the standardized structure of information is presented, proposing dedicated applications for automating the process of information fruition.

summary Direct solar access and daylight requirements contribute significantly when it comes to shaping the layout and appearance of contemporary cities. Urban planning regulations in Estonia set the minimum amount of direct solar access that existing housing has the right to receive and new premises are required to get when new developments are built. The solar envelope and solar collection methods are used to define the volume and shape of new buildings that allow the due solar rights to the surrounding buildings, in the case of the former, and the portion of the own façades that receive the required direct solar access, in the case of the latter. These methods have been developed over a period of several decades, and present-day CAAD and environmental analysis software permits the generation of solar envelopes and solar collection isosurfaces, although they suffer from limitations. This paper describes an advanced method for generating solar collection isosurfaces and presents evidence that it is significantly more efficient than the existing method for regulation in Estonia’s urban environments.

summary This paper provides a theoretical discourse on ontological instruments in design by exploring the ways in which design and technology might help get us back to an understanding of our own humanity. The intent of this theoretical discourse is to illuminate the possibilities of what can be, by looking at history as a way to see the world with perspective and as a predictor of what may happen. Another objective is to demonstrate the proof of those possibilities through the presentation of two design research projects which actualize those ideas. The first project is a prototype for an interactive chair that explores the calming effects of conscious and synchronized breathing. The second project is a reinterpretation of the veil and explores the relationship between the individual and the public. Both projects are artistic and performative in character and are embedded in a theoretical discourse on ontological instruments and investigate the opportunities of interaction of the human body with the environment moderated by technology.

summary The accelerated rate of urbanization in China is the motivator behind this paper. As a response to the observed monotonous housing developments in Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) and elsewhere our method exploits Cellular Automata (CA) combined with fitness evaluation algorithms to explore speculatively the potential of building regulations for increased density and diversity through an automated design algorithm. The well-known Game of Life CA is extended from its original 2-dimensional functionality into the realm of three dimensions and enriched with the possibility of resizing the involved cells according to their function. Moreover our method integrates the "social condenser" as a means of diversifying functional distribution within the Cellular Automata as well as solar radiation as requested by the existing building regulation. The method achieves a densification of the development from 31% to 39% ratio of footprint to occupied volume whilst obeying the solar radiation rule and offering a more diverse functional occupation. This proof of concept demonstrates a solid approach to the automated design of housing developments at an urban scale with a ,yet limited, evaluation procedure including solar radiation which can be extended to other performance criteria in future work.

summary The presented process enables users to design, fabricate and assemble spatial lattices comprised of linear stock materials such as round section timber, aluminum or acrylic dowels and complex 3D printed joints. The motivation for the development of this application is informed by the incredible availability of low cost 3D printers which enable anyone to produce small scale artifacts; deploying rapid prototyping to achieve larger scale artifacts than the machine's effective work envelope is a challenge for additive manufacturing; and the trend in the design computing world away highly technical specialized software towards general public applications.
