summary The Modern Heritage in Aracaju is still a little researched subject and the available works need to be reviewed and expanded. This paper presents the first results of a work dedicated to the analysis and registration of the Modern Heritage as a resilient action to the losses suffered, so that this heritage will resist in time and persist in the memory, enabling future research and conservation actions. The case study was the Hora Oliveira residence, which was modeled using Revit © from the development of a template, in which information about original materials and pathologies present in the building were inserted.

summary The general objective of the research is to contribute to the critical conceptualization of experimental architectural practices in the context of the production suggested by Digital Materiality from a global perspective. Performance Oriented Architecture is the capacity that material systems have for Active, Responsive or Living Performance. These three lines of action, analyzed with antecedents, suggest efficient forms of symbiosis with the environment, starting from the application of Biomimetic research methodologies. Strategic possibilities for implementation are identified where technology, interdisciplinary and with creativity, offers access to Resilient Design solutions to adapt to the consequences of a design subordinated to the needs of industrialization.

summary In an attempt to design shape-morphing multifunctional objects, this thesis uses programmable matter to design self-organizing multi-agent systems capable of morphing from one shape into another. The research looks at various precedents of self-assembly and modular robotics to design and prototype passive agents that could be cheaply mass-produced. Intelligence will be embedded into these agents on a material level, designing different local interactions to perform different global goals. The initial exploratory study looks at various examples from nature like plankton and molecules. Magnetic actuation is chosen as the external actuation force between agents. The research uses simultaneous digital and physical investigations to understand and design the interactions between agents. The project offers a systemic investigation of the effect of shape, interparticle forces, and surface friction on the packing and reconfiguration of granular systems. The ability to change the system state from a gaseous, liquid, then solid state offers new possibilities in the field of material computation, where one can design a "material" and change its properties on demand.

summary The built environment is a complex juxtaposition of static matter and dynamic flows, tangible objects and human experiences, physical realities and digital spaces. This paper offers an alternative understanding of those dichotomies by applying experimental design research strategies that combine objective quantification and subjective perception of urban contexts. The assumption is that layers of measurable datasets can be afforded with personal feedback to reveal "hidden" characteristics of cities. Drawing on studies from data and cognitive sciences, the proposed method allows us to analyze, quantify and visualize the individual experience of the built environment in relation to different urban qualities. By operating in between the scientific domain and the design realm, four design research experiments are presented. Leveraging augmenting and sensing technologies, these studies investigate: (1) urban attractors and user attention, employing eye-tracking technologies during walking; (2) urban proxemics and sensory experience, applying proximity sensors and EEG scanners in varying contexts; (3) urban mood and spatial perception, using mobile applications to merge tangible qualities and subjective feelings; and (4) urban vibe and paced dynamics, combining vibration sensing and observational data for studying city beats. This work demonstrates that, by adopting a multisensory and multidisciplinary approach, it is possible to gain a more human-centered, and perhaps novel understanding of the built environment. A lexicon of experimented urban situations may become a reference for studying different typologies of environments from the user experience, and provide a framework to support creative intuition for the development of more engaging, pleasant, and responsive spaces and places.

summary This paper presents a research of the relationship between architecture and context applied to the development of a sensitive pavilion that receives data from live sensors, responds and adapts in real time, generating a biunivocal resilience between the architectural object and the context. The research is developed through the integration between morphogenesis processes, parametric-generative design, Arduino, sensors, input and output devices that connect data and matter, programming and digital fabrication.The result is a pavilion designed and fabricated digitally, that receives data of the environment in real time through sensors and that reacts through changes of color and movements.

summary This article aims to describe the ephemeral qualities that typography acquires in the digital context, caused by the polyvalence of the algorithmic code, which, from generative programming, allows the user to interact with the typographic object. These reflection are realized through the study of four projects: “Lettree” (2004), “Pyrographie” (2005), “Falling in Love” (2016) and “He liked Thick Word Soup” (2014). The observations were made by drawing a comparison between the concept of “matter” in the computational scenario proposed by the design philosopher Vilém Flusser (2015) and the quality of “fluidity” observed in the images created by digital generative programs.

summary New technologies and uncontrolled open-data policies lead public to a new way of approaching the built environment. To enlarge the competences of the professionals that work within the cities, we believe that providing a deep and dynamic knowledge on the heritage and urban built environment is the more effective solution to offer a unique support to the needs. By providing a boosted geographical database with detailed information about the status of each building, we aim to support the professional by providing a neat vision about vacant buildings available citywide. We think this knowledge is an important asset in covering every kind of public requests: from flat to rent to an abandoned building to restore or to drive better investors. The city of Trento will be the pilot project to test these statements.We studied the phenomenon of pushing new constructions rather investing on the reuse of abandoned buildings with the consequences of unsustainable land use. To address the work we adopted a comprehensive approach across the fields of urbanism, ICT engineering and social sciences. We believe that sharing knowledge and know-hows with municipalities, agencies, and citizens is the way to support better market strategies as well as urban transformation policies.

summary This paper presents the research and development of a concrete micro-architecture proposal, based on a useful design for an interstitial urban space.The typology is a hydration station in the doors of an urban park, the park Sarmiento of the city of Córdoba where many gymnasts converge. The space with inmotic technology is resilient, able to mutate to be more comfortable, and is able to offer water with use control to ration in case of urban emergency. Working with domotics allows us to optimize the management of resources and therefore increase the efficiency of the systems of use and control.

summary This article search to describe how correlation levels between subject, information system and represented phenomena define representational models which may be used to enhance phenomena understanding, with aid of resilience representational models. The main work aim is to identify how representational models can be used to enhance resilience behaviour of information systems. Only dynamic information systems seems to show fair resilient behaviour, especially when they approach cognitive process reproduction realized by subject. Resilience in “information systems” emulate thinking object and thinking process.

summary Approaches from complex systems science can support design decision-making by extracting important information about key dependencies from large, unstructured data sources. This paper presents an initial case study applying such approaches to city structure, by characterising low-level features and aggregate properties of artifact morphology in urban areas. First, shape analysis is used to describe microscale artifact clusters, analysed in aggregate to characterise macroscale homogeneity and heterogeneity. The characterisation is used to analyse real-world example cities, from both historic maps and present-day crowdsourced data, testing against two performance evaluation criteria. Next, the characterisation is used to generate simple artificial morphologies, suggesting directions for future development. Finally, results and extensions are discussed, including real-world applications for decision support.

summary Smart Growth is an urban design movement initiated by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States (Smart Growth America, 2019). The regulations of Smart Growth control urban morphologies such as building height, use, position, section configurations, façade configurations, and materials, which have an explicit association with energy performances. This research aims to analyze and visualize the impact of Smart Growth developments on environmental performances. This paper presents a parametric modeling and simulation framework for Smart Growth developments that can model the potential community development scenarios, simulate the environmental footprints of each parcel, and visualize the results of modeling and simulation. We implemented and examined the proposed framework through a case study of two Smart Growth regulations: Columbia Unified Development Code (UDC) in Missouri (City of Columbia Missouri, 2017) and Overland Park Downtown Form-based Code (FBC) in Kansas City (City of Overland Park, 2017, 2019). Last, we discuss the implementation results, the limitations of the proposed framework, and the future work. We anticipate that the proposed method can improve stakeholders' understanding of how Smart Growth developments are associated with potential environmental footprints from an expeditious and thorough exploration of what-if scenarios of the multiple development schemes.

summary This paper presents the experience of the first phase of remodeling existing historical and colonial district in Bandung, Indonesia, including existing building façade, streetscape and street furniture. Braga Street is chosen as study case because it is a well-known historical street in Bandung with art deco style buildings constructed during Dutch colonial era. By remodeling it, it could help stakeholders to evaluate existing Braga street condition, to test any modification of buildings along the street and to determine specific regulation for the street. In this case, we use Unity3D and Oculus Rift DK2 for remodeling current situation. We gathered feedback from respondents using a questionnaire given after they experienced the model in VR. Many lessons learned from modeling process and respondents' feedback: higher frame rate to make seamless VR experience by having all components on a low poly model and provide smoother movement to prevent visual discomfort. This paper's conclusion gives suggestions for anyone who want to start architecture modeling in virtual reality for the very first time and how to optimize it.

summary In architectural education, the demand for creating forms with a non-Euclidean geometry, which can only be achieved by using the computer-aided design tools, is increasing. The teaching of this subject is a great challenge for both students and instructors, because of the intensive nature of architecture undergraduate programs. Therefore, for the creation of those forms with a non-Euclidean geometry, experimental work was carried out in an elective course based on the learning visual programming language. The creation of folding structures with form-finding by simulation was chosen as the subject of the design production which would be done as part of the content of the course. In this particular course, it was intended that all stages should be experienced, from the modeling in the virtual environment to the digital fabrication. Hence, in their early years of architectural education, the students were able to learn versatile thinking by experiencing, simultaneously, the use of simulation in the environment of visual programming language, the forming space by using folding structures, the material-based thinking and the creation of their designs suitable to the digital fabrication.

summary Computer-aided design has found its role in the undergraduate education of architects, and presently design by coding is also gradually finding further prominence in accord with the increasing demand by students who wish to learn more about this topic. This subject is included in an integrated manner in some studio courses on architecture design in some schools, or it is taught separately in elsewhere. In terms of the separate course on coding, the principal difficulty is that actual applications of the method can rarely be included due to time limitations and the fact that it is conducted separately from the studio course on architecture. However, within the framework of the architectural education, in order to learn about the coding it is necessary to consider it along with the design process, and this versatile thinking can only be achieved by the application of the design. In this study, an elective undergraduate course is considered in the context of design and to yield a versatile thinking strategy while learning the language of visual programming. The course progressed under the theoretical framework of shape grammar from the design stage through to the digital fabrication process, and the experimental studies were carried out on the selected topic of Islamic pattern. A method was proposed to improve the productivity of such courses, and an evaluation of the results is presented.

summary In the past, there has been a rapid evolution in computational tools to represent and analyze architectural designs. Analysis tools can be used in all stages of the design process, but they are often only used in the final stages, where it might be too late to impact the design. This is due to the considerable time and effort typically needed to produce the analytical models required by the analysis tools. A possible solution would be to convert the digital architectural models into analytical ones, but unfortunately, this often results in errors and frequently the analytical models need to be built almost from scratch. These issues discourage architects from doing a performance-oriented exploration of their designs in the early stages of a project. To overcome these issues, we propose Algorithmic Design and Analysis, a method for analysis that is based on adapting and extending an algorithmic-based design representation so that the modeling operations can generate the elements of the analytical model containing solely the information required by the analysis tool. Using this method, the same algorithm that produces the digital architectural model can also automatically generate analytical models for different types of analysis. Using the proposed method, there is no information loss and architects do not need additional work to perform the analysis. This encourages architects to explore several design alternatives while taking into account the design’s performance. Moreover, when architects know the set of design variations they wish to analyze beforehand, they can easily automate the analysis process.

summary Acoustics is typically considered only late in developed design or even post occupancy, if at all, for specification of finishes and furnishing, and typically with a remedial mindset. In this paper, the role of sound performance as a design driver in increasing the speech privacy of a semi-enclosed meeting space in an open plan interior is studied. Sound performance prediction is applied as an imperative input to inform the meeting space design. The design is the second iteration in an evolving series of meeting spaces, and therefore has benefited from both subjective experiments and objective measurements performed with the first meeting space prototype. This study promotes a design method that offers a strong relationship between the digital simulation of sound performance and design development. By improving the speech privacy of a meeting space by means of purely form, geometry and design decisions, the significance of architecture in tuning the sound performance of a space is investigated.

summary The challenges on the ways of producing and teaching architecture, in the face of new digital technologies, led us to develop guidelines for updating didactic strategies in the area of teaching geometry and graphic representation in architecture courses. In order to do so, it is proposed to use the SWOT matrix as a way to cross-check what is being discussed. summary Please write your aToday, in a moment when digital technologies are taking command of many architectural design and construction processes, it is important to examine the place and role of traditional ones. Designed by Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura in collaboration with Cecil Balmond, the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2005 reflects the potential of combining those two different approaches in the production of innovative buildings. For inquiring this argument, this paper investigates the development of this project from its conception to construction with a double goal: to uncover the relationship between analogical and digital processes, and to understand the architects' role in a geographically distributed workflow, which involved the use of computational design and robotic fabrication technologies. To support this examination, the authors designed and fabricated a 1:3 scale prototype of part of the Pavilion, which also served to check and reflect on the technological evolution since then, which is setting different conditions for design development and collaboration.bstract here by clicking this paragraph.

summary In this article, we present crowdsourcing as a design delivery method for publicly funded buildings, and compare it to the traditional Request for Proposals (RFP). We explore the potential of crowdsourcing through the use of an online design competition for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, IL, which the authors administered at Arcbazar.com, a crowdsourcing platform. Competition procedures have been applied in architectural practice since antiquity, from the Parthenon and the Hagia Sophia to thousands of seminal buildings around the globe. However, with the advent of digital technologies and outreach to a more interconnected world, crowdsourcing allows even the most mundane design challenges to go through the fair competition protocol. We argue that crowdsourcing can help democratize architectural design acquisition by giving a level playing field to designers, and produce a more just, competitive, and creative design product.
