summary This research was put together by four Master's students from KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture, who are self-motivated to investigate the possibilities of collective methods for designing within the Urban context. This paper is divided into two parts, the first being a scholarly investigation into learning from the collective mentality shift, and movements; discovering the added values of operating immersion/eversion from the virtual worlds to the physical one and analyzing key factors for engaging the public on online communities. Following, the paper brings to light the challenges the future of urban planning faces during today's digital shift and the solutions possible through the introduction of digital platforms as support to urban planning structures. The second part is the complementation of the first, as the research team showcases the findings by testing out the learned concepts and conducting on-field social experiments. The paper concludes with an analysis of the results, and future directions to the research project.

summary Studying interactions in museums often omits to consider the complexity of the space and the visitors' behaviors. Visitors' walking paths do not provide enough insight of their user experience (UX) since they are distant from the experiential realities. Videogrammetry can convey such dimensions of an environmental experience. Because of limitations of real-time playback, a twofold approach is suggested: "immersive videos" combined with "photogrammetric models". A granular optimal experience assessment method using retrospection interviews is also applied providing a finer evaluation of the perceived experience through time. This method permits to characterize museum interactive installations, according to the perceived challenges and skills of the interaction's task, based this time on immersive retrospection. This paper proposes the "Immersive retrospection" by "Immersive video-photogrammetry" as a UX assessment tool of interactions in museums. A hybrid virtual environment was used in this study, allowing social VR without the use of headsets, through a life-sized projection of interactive 3D content. The study showed that Immersive video-photogrammetry facilitates the recall of memories and allows a deepened self-observation analysis.

summary Within the field of digitally fabricated housing, the paper outlines a theoretical model for a housing system that combines complete off-site prefabrication with parametric assemblies. The paper then presents some insights on the application of snap-fit joints to the wall assemblies entirely fabricated using agricultural residue panels. Mechanical characterization of the material was performed through axial tension, compression and 4-point bending tests. Guidelines of plastics snap-fit design were applied to the joint design within the elastic limits of the material. Three different full scale wall typology prototypes were built using this jointing technique. The results show that while snap-fits can be a promising solution encouraging self-build in low-cost housing, the brittle nature of the specific agricultural residue panel material necessitates further joint enhancements.

summary Since some time already, digital reconstructions in architecture, urbanism and archaeology are gradually switching from describing built heritage as a collection of static and unchangeable entities towards more compound and explicit presentation and knowledge management techniques. This includes for instance data management and multimedia systems, immersive environments or semantic information modelling such as GIS (Geospatial Information Systems), BIM (Building Information Modeling) or HBIM (Historic Building Information Modeling). Graphical user interfaces, interaction and usability have become an essential part of produced reconstructions. This shift in terms of dissemination of an architectural and urban heritage that is supposed to increase the social awareness and participation should be structured in a way that enables recipients originating from different backgrounds to grasp information pertaining to almost any knowledge domain, allowing for self-exploration and interpretation of presented knowledge. This paper discusses important nodes of the reconstruction process in the spirit of informative modelling that are characteristic for any possible approach towards conscious heritage representations.

summary Research into self-assembly systems has been growing in recent years, focusing on the design and engineering of materials to react to environmental factors, which trigger a chain of reactions promoting the components to build themselves. This paper attempts to expand this field with the design and testing of a full-scale structure that could be dropped high above the ground, self-assemble in the air in a matter of seconds, and form an inhabitable space on the ground. This system uses spline-based fiberglass rods, folded in specific configurations and connected with parachute surfaces as the main material system, enabling the global aerial performance. A series of drop tests were conducted from a 100? crane to investigate the unfolding sequence, the release mechanisms, and the parachute configurations, leading to its successful aerial assembly.

summary This work presents the development of an applied research related to the installation of rainwater drainage systems in areas of economic and social vulnerability in São Paulo City, Brazil. It is also relevant for us to encourage participatory processes that involve the local community in problem-solving activities, while allowing appropriation of the technology applied. In this case, we are employing light prefabrication based on high performance microconcrete, molded in formwork produced with the aid of digital manufacturing. Our main purpose is to promote urban improvements in precarious settlements along with local economic development, made possible by self-management and community production.

summary Digital fabrication has transformed the way buildings are constructed by applying methods such as friction-fit connection. This technique has been propagated by WikiHouse which aims to develop open building technologies to different environmental contexts. However, the indiscriminate use of the model may result in inefficiency of housing performance. This work, therefore, investigates solutions for adapting WikiHouses to the tropics, according to principles proposed by Armando de Holanda in ‘A Guide to Build in Northeast Brazil’. Nevertheless, difficulties related to certain adaptations were observed such as connections compatibility and design of large open spaces, especially because these systems depend on a maximum size of parts.

summary Building on the understanding of music and architecture as creators of spatial experience, this paper presents a novel way of unfolding music’s spatial qualities in the physical world. Spaces That Perform Themselves arose as an innovative response to the current relationship between sound and space, where we build static spaces to contain dynamic sounds. What if we change the static parameter of spaces and start building dynamic spaces to contain dynamic sounds? This project combines architectural theories with musical mastery and computation to create an environment as kinetically undulant and emotionally varied as music itself. To achieve this, a multisensory kinetic room is built in order to augment our sonic perception through a cross-modal spatial choreography that combines sound, spatial movement, light, color and vibration. By breaking down boundaries between disciplines, the possibilities of a new type of architectural typology that morphs responsively with a musical piece can be explored. As a result, spatial and musical composition can exist as one synchronous entity. Spaces That Perform Themselves seeks to contribute a novel perspective to the discourse on leveraging today’s technology to provide a setting to enrich and augment the way we relate with the built environment. This project’s objective is to enhance our perception and challenge models of thinking by presenting a post-humanistic phenomenological encounter of the world.

summary This talk will present a series of projects from the Digital Design Build Studio. The Studio explores the relation between computation, materiality, tectonics and structure at an architectural scale. The research presented in the talk will have a focus on an investigation on polymers. The talk will also use these explorations to discuss a model of operation for architecture schools in the context of a profession that has been disrupted by digital technology. Talking about some projects in more detail will illustrate the findings of the experimentation with different polymers. The discussion will also highlight the social aspect of these interventions and illustrate how coalitions between non-profit organizations, developers, industry and municipalities may benefit and impact their communities.

summary This article discusses the methodology and results of the Maslow’s Palace workshops project, which engages with current debates surrounding the democratisation of digital urban design technology and stakeholder decision making, through the implementation of a speculative oriented approach to serious gaming. The research explores how serious games might be used to help marginalised communities consider past, future and present community experiences, reconcile dissimilar assumptions, generate social capital building and design responses and prime participants for further long-term design engagement processes through a new approach called Speculative Participatory Serious Urban Gaming. Empirical material for this research was gathered from a range of case study workshops prepared with three landfill-based communities and external partners throughout 2017. Results show the approach helped participants develop shared norms, values and collective understandings of sensitive topics and develop ideas for future action through ‘collective tinkering.

summary This paper presents the development of a prototype for a new sensing device for anonymously evaluating space utilization, which includes usage factors such as occupancy levels, congregation and circulation patterns. This work builds on existing methods and technology for measuring building performance, human comfort and occupant experience in post-occupancy evaluations as well as pre-design strategic planning. The ability to collect data related to utilization and occupant experience has increased significantly due to the greater accessibility of sensor systems in recent years. As a result, designers are exploring new methods to empirically verify spatial properties that have traditionally been considered more qualitative in nature. With this premise, this study challenges current strategies that rely heavily on manual data collection and survey reports. The proposed sensing device is designed to supplement the traditional manual method with a new layer of automated, unbiased data that is capable of capturing environmental and social qualities of a given space. In a controlled experiment, the authors found that the data collected from the sensing device can be extrapolated to show how layout, spatial interventions or other design factors affect circulation, congregation, productivity, and occupancy in an office setting. In the future, this sensing device could provide designers with real-time feedback about how their designs influence occupants’ experiences, and thus allow the designers to base what are currently intuition-based decisions on reliable data and evidence.

summary As computational design matures, the discipline is in a position to address an increasing number of cultural dimensions: social, political, and ethical. This paper examines the gender gap in computational design and proposes an agenda to achieve gender equality. Data from architectural publications and the CumInCAD database provide metrics for measuring the segregation between feminist and computational discourse. Examples of feminist theory establish possible entry points within computational design to bridge the gaps in gender equity and representation. Specifically, the authors re-examine 1990s networked feminism in relation to the computational culture of today. The paper concludes with a proposed definition of Computational Feminism as a social, political, and ethical discourse. This definition appropriates Donna Haraway’s cyborg as its symbolic instrument of equality.

summary In this paper, we further develop and test a walkability evaluation method developed by the first author to understand two neighborhoods in Brussels. This method introduced alternative strategies and tools for enabling the evaluation of walkability and discussed how a structured collection of human experiences could lead to a social construct of walkability. In this study, following this method, we made a field survey with architecture students to measure the walkability of the two referenced neighborhoods. In addition, considering the close links of walkability with the physical layout and configuration, we made a Space Syntax analysis (visual integration and axial connectivity) and compared this with the walkability ratings made by the students. As a result, we found moderate to high correlations between the experiential evaluation of the students and the Space Syntax results. Besides establishing links between subjective and computational surveys, this study led to the conception of a web-based platform with a mobile app which integrates location-based experiential and computational evaluations of walkability.

summary In an attempt to design shape-morphing multifunctional objects, this thesis uses programmable matter to design self-organizing multi-agent systems capable of morphing from one shape into another. The research looks at various precedents of self-assembly and modular robotics to design and prototype passive agents that could be cheaply mass-produced. Intelligence will be embedded into these agents on a material level, designing different local interactions to perform different global goals. The initial exploratory study looks at various examples from nature like plankton and molecules. Magnetic actuation is chosen as the external actuation force between agents. The research uses simultaneous digital and physical investigations to understand and design the interactions between agents. The project offers a systemic investigation of the effect of shape, interparticle forces, and surface friction on the packing and reconfiguration of granular systems. The ability to change the system state from a gaseous, liquid, then solid state offers new possibilities in the field of material computation, where one can design a "material" and change its properties on demand.

summary A city, defined as a unity of inhabitants with their environment and showing self-creating and self-maintaining properties, can be considered as an autopoietic system if we take into account its bottom-up processes with unpredictable behaviour of its components. Such a property can lead to self-creation of urban patterns. These processes are studied in well-known vernacular architectures and informal settlements around the world and they are able to adapt according to various conditions and forces. The main research objective is to establish a computational design-modelling framework for modelling autopoietic intricate characteristics of a city based on an adaptability, self-maintenance and self-generation of urban patterns with adequate visual representation.The paper introduces a modelling methodology that allows to combine planning tasks with inhabitants' interaction and data sources by using an interchange framework to model more complex urban dynamics. The research yields preliminary results tested in a simulation model of a redevelopment of Tanjong Pagar Waterfront, the container terminal in the city of Singapore being transformed into a new future centre as a conducted case study.

summary The consequences of automation technology on industry are currently widely discussed in terms of future tasks, work organisation and working environments. Even though various novel education programmes specialise in digital fabrication, relatively little has been written on concepts for a deeper integration of digital technologies in the architectural curriculum. This paper gives an overview of interdisciplinary educational approaches and digital project development techniques and describes a teaching method featuring intensive collaboration with research and industry, an iterative teaching method employing digital production of large-scale prototypes and a moderated self-learning process. We describe two examples of teaching initiatives in particular that were undertaken at TU Munich and ETH Zurich and analyse their results in terms of physical outcomes, teaching accomplishments, resource efficiency and connection to research. We discuss the relationship between necessary teaching intensity, project size and complexity of digital fabrication equipment and conclude by giving an outlook for future initiatives.

summary Self-supporting modular block systems of stone or masonry architecture are amongst ancient building techniques that survived unchanged for centuries. The control over geometry and structural performance of arches, domes and vaults continues to be exemplary and structural integrity is analysed through analogue and virtual simulation methods. With the advancement of computational tools and software development, finite and discrete element modeling have become efficient practices for analysing aspects for economy, tolerances and safety of stone masonry structures. This paper compares methods of structural simulation and analysis of an arch based on an interlocking wave joint assembly. As an extension of standard planar brick or stone modules, two specific geometry variations of catenary and sinusoidal curvature are investigated and simulated in a comparison of physical compression tests and finite element analysis methods. This is in order to test the stress performance and resilience provided by three-dimensional joints respectively through their capacity to resist vertical compression, as well as torsion and shear forces. The research reports on the threshold for maximum sinusoidal curvature evidenced by structural failure in physical modelling methods and finite element analysis.

summary Experimental investigation focused on the creation of a procedural method for the manufacturing of a material made by wicker fiber and reinforced by the fixation adhesive Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA), with the objective of increasing the natural plasticity of wicker and generate self-supporting parts which lack of an internal or external structure that may give them their final morphology. Furthermore, it aims to generate new knowledge that may improve the productive techniques and contribute to the sustainable micro-industrialization of the material.
