title Robotic Spatial Printing

summary There has been significant research into large-scale 3D printing processes with industrial robots. These were initially used to extrude in a layered manner. In recent years, research has aimed to make use of six degrees of freedom instead of three. These so called "spatial extrusion" methods are based on a toolhead, mounted on a robot arm, that extrudes a material along a non horizontal spatial vector. This method is more time efficient but up to now has suffered from a number of limiting geometrical and structural constraints. This limited the formal possibilities to highly repetitive truss-like patterns. This paper presents a generalised approach to spatial extrusion based on the notion of discreteness. It explores how discrete computational design methods offer increased control over the organisation of toolpaths, without compromising design intent while maintaining structural integrity. The research argues that, compared to continuous methods, discrete methods are easier to prototype, compute and manufacture. A discrete approach to spatial printing uses a single toolpath fragment as basic unit for computation. This paper will describe a method based on a voxel space. The voxel contains geometrical information, toolpath fragments, that is subsequently assembled into a continuous, kilometers long path. The path can be designed in response to different criteria, such as structural performance, material behaviour or aesthetics. This approach is similar to the design of meta-materials - synthetic composite materials with a programmed performance that is not found in natural materials. Formal differentiation and structural performance is achieved, not through continuous variation, but through the recombination of discrete toolpath fragments. summary GrowMorph is an ongoing research project that addresses the logic of bacterial cellular growth and its potential uses in architecture and design. While natural forms have always been an inspiration for human creativity, contemporary technology and scientific knowledge can allow us to advance the principle of biomimesis in striking new directions. By examining various patterns of bacterial growth, including their parametric logic, their use of responsive membranes and scaffolding structures, and their environmental fitness, this research creates new algorithmic design and construction models that can be applied through digital fabrication. Based on data from confocal microscopy, simulations were created using programming language Processing to model the environmental responses and morphology of the bacteria's growth. To demonstrate the utility of the results, the simulations created in this research were used to design an organically shaped pavilion and to suggest a new digital knitting process for material construction. The results from the study can inspire designers to make use of bacterial growth logic in their work, and provide them with practical tools for this purpose. Potential applications include novel designs for responsive surfaces, new fabrication processes, and unique spatial structures in future architectural work.

summary Contemporary Building Information Modeling (BIM) software provides basic component types such as bathtubs, desks, windows and walls that are available in many varieties of kinds and ready for drag-and-drop into a design project. However, the software is unlikely to provide higher level constructs such as bathrooms or offices as types, and these spatial concepts are largely unframed in the ontology of the building system. This paper looks at these spatial concepts left unframed in BIM as important fabric in the design process, examines how they are represented typologically in conventional design resources such as Neufert Architects' Data, and discusses strategies for embedding them in BIM. Together with abundant published cases of architectural designs, the examples of spatial forms in these resources play a role of Big Data. The paper then demonstrates a prototype of parametric office building typology embedded in BIM and illustrates how such a tool helps an architect to study volumetric layout on a given site. The approach tested leads to an idea of BIM imbued with a massive taxonomic library of preassembled spatial types and takes us a step closer to a symbiotic or synthetic architectural design process.

summary Todays design researchers are beginning to develop a process-based approach to biomimicry. Instead of merely looking at static natural structures for inspiration, we are learning to draw from the underlying organic processes that lead to the creation of those structures. This paradigm shift points us in the direction of adaptive fabrication systems that can grow through processes of self-assembly and can reconfigure themselves to meet the contours of local environments. In this study we examined the structural growth patterns of bacterial biofilms as a basis for a new kind of artificial, self-assembling module. This demonstration of bio-inspired design shows how contemporary technology allows us to harness the lessons of evolution in new and innovative ways. By exploring the dynamic assembly of complex structural formations in nature, we are able to derive new resource-efficient approaches to adaptable designs that are suited to changing environments. Ultimately we aspire to produce fully synthetic analogues that follow similar patterns of self-assembly to those found in bacterial biofilm colonies. Designers have only just begun to explore the tremendous wealth of natural form-creation processes that can now be replicated with computer-aided design and fabrication; this project shows just one example of what the future might hold.

summary This paper will discuss and investigate the issues with the concept of 'glitch' in architecture. There are currently two definitions that sit in a symbiotic relationship with each other; Moradi's (2004) and Menkman's (2011). This paper will explore the implications of these two approaches, while investigating the possibility of a third, unique definition (the encoded transform), and what effect they have on the possibility for a 'glitch architecture'. The paper will then focus on the glitches' capacity to be disruptive within the design process. In the context of architecture, it has been previously argued that the inclusion of glitches within a design process can easily create a process that does not 'converge' to a desired design outcome, but instead shifts haphazardly within a set of family resemblances (Austin & Perin 2015). Further to this, it will be revealed that this 'divergent' quality of glitches is due to the encoded nature of architectural production.

title Lumifoil and Tschumi: Virtual projections and architectural interventions

summary This article introduces the theoretical and technical framework for the design of a temporary rooftop canopy on the red generator—one of the buildings designed by Bernard Tschumi for the Florida International University School of Architecture. The project, Lumifoil, was designed using both top-down and bottom-up computational techniques, including surface modeling via projected geometries and scripted cellular subdivisions and assemblies. Lumifoil attempts to synthesize these two often-conflicting design approaches into a generative design process which leverages context, form, surface, and structure as affective and effective actors. Lumifoil is the result of a design methodology which is both active and reactive to existing conditions of the site and new opportunities afforded by the program. It is contextual in its top-down relationship to Tschumi’s existing building and theory, generative in how details emerge bottom-up through scripts which lack any reference to site, and emergent in the resulting synthetic processes and effects which are produced. Through this methodological development, the project both tracks and responds to popular architectural theory and design from the mid-1990s to today. The theoretical underpinnings of the project build upon the idea that the actual (the real-life physical manifestation of matter) and the virtual (the potential for an object to be) are two constantly shifting paradigms in which design processes can intervene to help develop an architectural solution from a range of possibilities. The technical aspect of the project includes the collaborative workflow between the architecture offices of OTA+ and studio MODO with Arup Engineers to resolve structural issues using parametric modeling tools and structural analysis software. The final project is entirely parametric and fabrication is completely automated.

summary Considering the outdoor environment at the initial stage of design process plays a significant role on future building performance. Augmented Reality (AR) technology applied in this research can integrate real world building morphology information and virtual world ventilation information seamlessly that rapidly and directly provides designers information for observation and evaluation. During the case study of "2017 Shanghai DigitalFUTURE" summer workshop, a research on augmented reality technology based wind environment visualization was carried on. The achievement with an application software not only showed the geometric information of the real world objects (such as buildings), but also the virtual wind environment has displayed. Thus, these two kinds of information can complement and superimpose each other. This AR technology based software brings multiple synthetic together, which can (1) visualize the air flow around buildings that provides designers rapid and direct information for evaluation; (2) deal with wind-environment-related data quantitatively and present in an intuitive, easy-to-interpret graphical way; and (3) be further developed as a visualization system based on built-in environments in the future, which contributes to rapid evaluation of a series of programs at the beginning of the building design.

summary In architectural education, the demand for creating forms with a non-Euclidean geometry, which can only be achieved by using the computer-aided design tools, is increasing. The teaching of this subject is a great challenge for both students and instructors, because of the intensive nature of architecture undergraduate programs. Therefore, for the creation of those forms with a non-Euclidean geometry, experimental work was carried out in an elective course based on the learning visual programming language. The creation of folding structures with form-finding by simulation was chosen as the subject of the design production which would be done as part of the content of the course. In this particular course, it was intended that all stages should be experienced, from the modeling in the virtual environment to the digital fabrication. Hence, in their early years of architectural education, the students were able to learn versatile thinking by experiencing, simultaneously, the use of simulation in the environment of visual programming language, the forming space by using folding structures, the material-based thinking and the creation of their designs suitable to the digital fabrication.

summary This paper presents the development of a prototype for a new sensing device for anonymously evaluating space utilization, which includes usage factors such as occupancy levels, congregation and circulation patterns. This work builds on existing methods and technology for measuring building performance, human comfort and occupant experience in post-occupancy evaluations as well as pre-design strategic planning. The ability to collect data related to utilization and occupant experience has increased significantly due to the greater accessibility of sensor systems in recent years. As a result, designers are exploring new methods to empirically verify spatial properties that have traditionally been considered more qualitative in nature. With this premise, this study challenges current strategies that rely heavily on manual data collection and survey reports. The proposed sensing device is designed to supplement the traditional manual method with a new layer of automated, unbiased data that is capable of capturing environmental and social qualities of a given space. In a controlled experiment, the authors found that the data collected from the sensing device can be extrapolated to show how layout, spatial interventions or other design factors affect circulation, congregation, productivity, and occupancy in an office setting. In the future, this sensing device could provide designers with real-time feedback about how their designs influence occupants’ experiences, and thus allow the designers to base what are currently intuition-based decisions on reliable data and evidence.

summary This paper introduces the theoretical considerations underlying the design of a digitally designed and Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) fabricated public installation project in the city of Austin, Texas. The project, The Creek Zipper, is an assemblage of exo?related units that symbolically reconnects two divided city neighborhoods, establishes a new relationship between the synthetic and natural, and inflates a two?dimensional graphic into a three?dimensional form. The project can be clearly read as a whole from a distance, but as one approaches, the legibility of each part begins to overwhelm the perception of the whole. As the form of the whole dissipates, the project gains a field?like presence, revealing different sets of discrete figures nested within the larger whole. The Creek Zipper addresses these multiple overlapping dichotomies that act as design generators and promote a dynamic expression of the project.

This analysis, aims to legitimate, and expose the advantages and limits of a potential union between the molecular world and the design of the habitable space.

summary This project applies techniques in machine learning, specifically generative adversarial networks (or GANs), to produce synthetic images intended to capture the predominant visual properties of urban places. We propose that imaging cities in this manner represents the first computational approach to documenting the Genius Loci of a city (Norberg-Schulz, 1980), which is understood to include those forms, textures, colors, and qualities of light that exemplify a particular urban location and that set it apart from similar places. Presented here are methods for the collection of urban image data, for the necessary processing and formatting of this data, and for the training of two known computational statistical models (StyleGAN (Karras et al., 2018) and Pix2Pix (Isola et al., 2016)) that identify visual patterns distinct to a given site and that reproduce these patterns to generate new images. These methods have been applied to image nine distinct urban contexts across six cities in the US and Europe, the results of which are presented here. While the product of this work is not a tool for the design of cities or building forms, but rather a method for the synthetic imaging of existing places, we nevertheless seek to situate the work in terms of computer-assisted design (CAD). In this regard, the project is demonstrative of a new approach to CAD tools. In contrast with existing tools that seek to capture the explicit intention of their user (Aish, Glynn, Sheil 2017), in applying computational statistical methods to the production of images that speak to the implicit qualities that constitute a place, this project demonstrates the unique advantages offered by such methods in capturing and expressing the tacit.

summary Beyond its widespread use for representing technical aspects and matters of building and construction science, Building information modeling (BIM) can be used to represent architectural relationships and rules drawn from aesthetic theory. This research suggests that BIM provides not only vocabulary but also syntactical tools that can be used to capture an architectural language. In a case study using Richard Meier’s language for single-family detached houses, a BIM template has been devised to represent the aesthetic concepts and relations therein. The template employs parameterized conceptual mass objects, syntactical rules, and a library of architectonic elements, such as walls, roofs, columns, windows, doors, and railings. It constrains any design produced using the template to a grammatically consistent expression or style. The template has been used as the starting point for modeling the Smith House, the Douglas House, and others created by the authors, demonstrating that the aesthetic template is general to many variations. Designing with the template to produce a unique but conforming design further illustrates the generality and expressiveness of the language. Having made the formal language explicit, in terms of syntactical rules and vocabulary, it becomes easier to vary the formal grammar and concrete vocabulary to produce variant languages and styles. Accordingly, this approach is not limited to a specific style, such as Richard Meier's. Future research can be conducted to demonstrate how designing with BIM can support stylistic change. Adoption of this approach in practice could improve the consistency of architectural designs and their coherence to defined styles, potentially increasing the general level of aesthetic expression in our built environment.

summary Architecture has always relied on mathematics to achieve proportioned aesthetics, structural performance, and reasonable construction. Computational tools have now given architects the means to design and build spatial concepts that would have been inconceivable even ten years ago. Against this background the paper discusses an educational approach that focuses on the early integration of computational principles, regarding the definition of geometry as well as material and fabrication parameters to inform the architectural design. Three case studies illustrate the interdisciplinary approach, conceived and carried out jointly by the Department of Architecture and the Department of Mathematics.

summary In architectural education and practice, we don’t come in physical contact with what we make until the later stages of the design process. This vision-oriented approach to design is something deeply rooted in architectural practice: from Alberti’s window to the screens of our computers, design has traditionally been more of a visual and less of a hands-on process. The vision of the presented study is that if we want to understand the way we make in order to improve tools for computational design and making, we need to understand how our ability to make things is enhanced by both our visual and tactile mechanisms. Bringing the notion of active touch from psychology into the design studio, I design and execute a series of experiments investigating how seeing, touching, or seeing and touching exhibit different sensory competencies, and how these competencies are expressed through the process of making. The subjects of the experiment are asked to tactilely, visually, or tactilely and visually observe a three-dimensional object, create descriptions of its composition, and to remake it based on their experience of it using plastic materials. After the execution of the experiment, I analyze twenty-one reproductions of the original object; I point to ways in which touch can detect scale and proportions more accurately than vision, while vision can detect spatial components more efficiently than touch; I then propose ways in which this series of experiments can lead to the creation of new design and making tools.

summary The concept of entropy, which can be used to measure physical disorder, has been rediscovered by Shannon to measure the irregularity in information. Entropy measurements are made by considering one or more factors. Specific features such as color, shape, element type, height, material related with architectural compositions can be considered as factors and the amount of information carried by the building depending on one or more of these factors can be measured. In this study, it is questioned whether there is a relationship between entropy values of municipal building competition projects, which are measured in relation to the factors, and the building is considered successful by the competition jury. In order to conduct this examination, the entropy values of the projects, which respected to the same architectural program and won various awards in the project competitions were calculated. Before making comparisons, measurements were made according to solid-void ratios on the plan layout, the shapes of closed and discrete spaces, and the distribution of functions. A discussion was made on the usability of entropy method in the design phase, which gave solid and precise results according to the results of the comparisons.

summary The goal of this paper is to advance the research on bending-active structures by investigating the system’s inherent structural characteristics and introducing an alternative approach to their design and fabrication. With this project, the authors propose the use of sandwich-structured composites to improve the load-bearing behavior of bending-active shells. By combining digital form-finding and form-conversion processes, it becomes possible to discretize a double-curved shell geometry into an assembly of single-curved sandwich strips. Due to the clever use of bending in the construction process, these strips can be made out of inexpensive and flat sheet materials. The assembly itself takes advantage of two fundamentally different structural states. When handled individually, the thin panels are characterized by their high flexibility, yet when cross-connected to a sandwich, they gain bending stiffness and increase the structure’s rigidity. To explain the possible impacts of this approach, the paper will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of bending-active structures in general and outline the potential of sandwich shells in particular. Furthermore, the authors will address the fundamental question of how to build a load-bearing system from flexible parts by using the practical example of the Studio One Research Pavilion. To illustrate this project in more detail, the authors will present the digital design process involved as well as demonstrate the technical feasibility of this approach through a built prototype in full scale. Finally, the authors will conclude with a critical discussion of the design approach proposed here and point out interesting topics for future research.

summary The design as a process is not a new topic in architecture, yet some theories are widely unexplored, such as the multi-stage decision-making (MD) process. This design method provides multiple solutions for one design problem and is characterized by design stages. By adding new building components in every stage, multiple solutions are created for each design solution from the previous stage. If the MD process is to be applied in architectural practice, fundamental and theoretical knowledge about it becomes necessary. This paper investigates the impact of sequence of design stages on the design solutions in the MD process. A basic case study provides the necessary data for comparing different sequences and gaining fundamental knowledge of the MD process. The study contains a parametric model for building generation, a parametric Life Cycle Assessment tool and an optimization mechanism based on Evolutionary Algorithms.

title Macro-scale designs through topological deformations in the built environment

summary Design studies are being done on contemporary master-plans which may be applied in many locations worldwide. Advances in information technology are becoming the base model of design studies, and these may be more effective than the efforts of humans in the field of architecture and urban design. However, urban morphology variables and constants must be considered while designing contemporary master-plans in the existing built environment. The aims of this study were to extend the use of computer software for different applications and to make a topological work in the regional context. Accordingly, a case study was made using the nCloth simulation tools to create non-Euclidean forms while protecting the road system, which is one of the constant parameters of urban morphology in the built environment.
