summary This paper proposes and examines a new way of cooperation between human workers and machine intelligence in architectural scale construction. For the transfer of construction information between the physical and digital world, mature technologies such as Radio Frequency IDentifier (RFID), and emerging technologies like Augmented Reality (AR) are used in parallel to supplement each other. Dynamic data flow is implemented to synchronize digital and physical models by following the ID signatures of individual building parts. The contributions of this paper includes the demonstration of current technological limitations, and the proposal of a hybrid system between human and computer, which is tested in order to explore the possibilities of digitally enhanced construction methods.

summary This research explores the development of seamless pneumatically actuated systems whose motion is controlled by the combination of differentially knitted textiles and standardized thin-walled silicone tubing. This work proposes a fundamental material strategy that addresses challenges ranging from soft robotics to pneumatic architecture. Research in soft robotics seeks to achieve complex motions through non-mechanical monolithic systems, comprised of highly articulated shapes molded with a combination of elastic and inelastic materials. Inflatables in architecture focus largely on the active structuring of static forms, as facade systems or as structured envelopes. An emerging use of pneumatic architecture proposes morphable, adaptive systems accomplished through differentiated mechanically interconnected components. In the research described in this paper, a wide array of capabilities in motion and geometric articulation are accomplished through the design of knitted sleeves that generate a series of actuated “elbows.” As opposed to molding silicone bladders, differentiation in motion is generated through the more facile ability of changing stitch structure, and shaping of the knitted textile sleeve, which constrains the standard silicone tubing. The relationship between knit differentiation, pneumatic pressure, and the resultant motion profile is studied initially with individual actuators, and ultimately in propositions for larger seamless assemblies. As opposed to a cellular study of individual components, this research proposes structures with multi-scalar articulation, from fiber and stitch to overall form, composed into seamless, massively deformable architectures.

summary The gradual rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and its increasing visibility among many research disciplines affected Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAAD). Architectural deep learning (DL) approaches are being developed and published on a regular basis, such as retrieval (Sharma et al. 2017) or design style manipulation (Newton 2019; Silvestre et al. 2016). However, there seems to be no method to evaluate highly constrained spatial configurations for specific architectural domains (such as housing or office buildings) based on basic architectural principles and everyday practices. This paper introduces an automatic constraint-based consistency checker to evaluate the coherency of semantic spatial configurations of housing construction using a small set of design principles to evaluate our DL approaches. The consistency checker informs about the overall performance of a spatial configuration followed by whether it is open/closed and the constraints it didn't satisfy. This paper deals with the relation of spaces processed as mathematically formalized graphs contrary to existing model checking software like Solibri.

summary Parametric design is an emerging research issue in the design domain. However, discussions about the creative process in parametric design are limited. What is more, despite the passing of 57 years of parametric design's existence we still do not know what parametric design is. Is it a simple tool, which is useful in some kind of optimization of the architectural form, or it is a medium, which helps architects develop unexpected solutions, and perhaps this is already a new design paradigm? The presented paper will contain general considerations relating to the nature of parametric design, the history of which starts in 1960, when D.T. summary Digital fabrication has transformed the way buildings are constructed by applying methods such as friction-fit connection. This technique has been propagated by WikiHouse which aims to develop open building technologies to different environmental contexts. However, the indiscriminate use of the model may result in inefficiency of housing performance. This work, therefore, investigates solutions for adapting WikiHouses to the tropics, according to principles proposed by Armando de Holanda in ‘A Guide to Build in Northeast Brazil’. Nevertheless, difficulties related to certain adaptations were observed such as connections compatibility and design of large open spaces, especially because these systems depend on a maximum size of parts.

summary Mass customization (MC) and personal fabrication (PF) are current relevant topics in architecture offices practice and schools design research. Architects are adopting information based design and production techniques as a response to architectural century challenges. However, is not clear how various authors used and transformed the concept in practice, research and industry after three decades since the MC term was introduced by Davis (1987). Therefore, is essential to map the most relevant works in the field in relation to production and design control. The paper presents some of the results of the ongoing study through an evolving map that aims to visualize relationships, layering complexity and revealing difference.

The co-design among community and trans-disciplinary participants with different expertise required scope of media mix, switching between analogue, digital and back again. This involves different degrees of physical and digital 'GIGA-Mapping' (Sevaldson, 2011, 2015), 'Grasshopper3d' (Davidson, 2017) scripting and mix of digital and analogue fabrication to address the real life world. The critical participation of this 'Time-Based Design' (Sevaldson, 2004, 2005) process is the interaction of the prototype with eco-systemic agency of the adjacent environment - the eco-systemic performance. The TreeHugger is a responsive solid wood insect hotel, generating habitats and edible landscaping (Creasy, 2004) on bio-tope in city centre of Prague. To extend the impact, the code was uploaded for communities to download, local-specifically edit and apply worldwide. Thus, the fusion of discussed processes is multi-scaled and multi-layered, utilised in emerging design field: Systemic Approach to Architectural Performance.

summary Direct solar access and daylight requirements contribute significantly when it comes to shaping the layout and appearance of contemporary cities. Urban planning regulations in Estonia set the minimum amount of direct solar access that existing housing has the right to receive and new premises are required to get when new developments are built. The solar envelope and solar collection methods are used to define the volume and shape of new buildings that allow the due solar rights to the surrounding buildings, in the case of the former, and the portion of the own façades that receive the required direct solar access, in the case of the latter. These methods have been developed over a period of several decades, and present-day CAAD and environmental analysis software permits the generation of solar envelopes and solar collection isosurfaces, although they suffer from limitations. This paper describes an advanced method for generating solar collection isosurfaces and presents evidence that it is significantly more efficient than the existing method for regulation in Estonia’s urban environments.

summary The emergence of media infused facades and new human computer interfaces have been of great interest in architecture in the recent decades. Most of the emerging examples are geared towards a multi-dimensional graphical output and most commonly stimulate our sense of sight. This paper explores recent developments in soft robotics and material sciences, developed at the Material Dynamics Lab at NJIT, that will allow the human computer interfaces to engage its users by captivating a multitude of senses simultaneously. Furthermore, this paper will contemplate future trajectories for the novel material strategies to improve human-computer or human-robot interaction, that one day may lead to truly robotic architectures.

summary Cities are continuously produced through entropic processes that mediate between complex networked systems and the immediacy urban life. Emergent media technologies inform new relationships between information and matter, code and space to redefine new urban ecosystems. Modes of perceiving, experiencing and inhabiting cities are radically changing along with a radical transformation of the tools that we use to design. Cities as complex and systemic organisms require approaches that engage new multi-scalar strategies to connect the physical layer with the system of networked ecologies. This paper aims at investigating emerging and novel forms of reading and producing urban spaces reimagining the physical city through intelligent and mediated processes. Through data agency and responsive urban processes, the design methodology explored the materialization of a temporary pneumatic structure and membrane that tested material performance through fabrication and sensing practices through the pneuSENSE project developed in July 2016 in New York at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during the 'HyperCities' IaaC- Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia - Global Summer School.

summary In emerging countries there is a need for rapid urban planning, since they are confronted by unprecedented wave of urbanization. This need is even bigger since usually there is no adequate number of professional educated urban planners in these countries. Therefore, we investigate in this paper how to develop a set of methods that allow to generate urban fabric semi-automatically. The challenge is to come up with a generative planning model that adapts to multiple boundary conditions.Through a modular design strategy generative methods are applied by students in an urban design studio in order to combine them into more complex planning strategies for small cities in the emerging country of Ethiopia. The modular approach allows to break down planning into sub-issues to better deal with the overarching problem. For testing the implemented generative urban design strategies various cities are generated at different locations in Ethiopia with various topographic situations. Their underlying design strategies and modular approach are discussed in this paper.

summary The accelerated rate of urbanization in China is the motivator behind this paper. As a response to the observed monotonous housing developments in Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) and elsewhere our method exploits Cellular Automata (CA) combined with fitness evaluation algorithms to explore speculatively the potential of building regulations for increased density and diversity through an automated design algorithm. The well-known Game of Life CA is extended from its original 2-dimensional functionality into the realm of three dimensions and enriched with the possibility of resizing the involved cells according to their function. Moreover our method integrates the "social condenser" as a means of diversifying functional distribution within the Cellular Automata as well as solar radiation as requested by the existing building regulation. The method achieves a densification of the development from 31% to 39% ratio of footprint to occupied volume whilst obeying the solar radiation rule and offering a more diverse functional occupation. This proof of concept demonstrates a solid approach to the automated design of housing developments at an urban scale with a ,yet limited, evaluation procedure including solar radiation which can be extended to other performance criteria in future work.

summary Within the field of digitally fabricated housing, the paper outlines a theoretical model for a housing system that combines complete off-site prefabrication with parametric assemblies. The paper then presents some insights on the application of snap-fit joints to the wall assemblies entirely fabricated using agricultural residue panels. Mechanical characterization of the material was performed through axial tension, compression and 4-point bending tests. Guidelines of plastics snap-fit design were applied to the joint design within the elastic limits of the material. Three different full scale wall typology prototypes were built using this jointing technique. The results show that while snap-fits can be a promising solution encouraging self-build in low-cost housing, the brittle nature of the specific agricultural residue panel material necessitates further joint enhancements.

summary This paper presents the research development for a base structural module for the Casa Nordeste project. Casa Nordeste is a compact housing experiment that will participate in the Solar Decathlon Latin America competition. It consists of a modular building that houses living, cooking, and sanitizing space. Developments presented are based on digital design and fabrication principles and processes, through algorithms that allow its customization. In this sense, discussions begin with a brief theoretical discussion about the concepts that underline the project: evolutionary housing; digital technologies that improve design and construction; open source construction and generative design systems. The paper finalizes by presenting and discussing developments of three different design aspects of the structural module: (a) geometry of the frames, (b) its modulation, and (c) fittings and joining mechanisms.

summary This paper explores the pedagogical context for the inclusion of daylight and wind simulation as part of architectural design-studio teaching. The author describes both challenges as well as opportunities encountered by architecture students who applied high-end technology for optimizing environmental conditions during the conceptual design of a residential project within a thirteen week studio. Students located their projects in an inner urban context in a 'Temperate' climate zone, meaning that they had to account for hot conditions in summer while considering wind-chill factors in winter. Based on the studio experience, the paper scrutinizes how students tackled Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and daylight analysis on different scales of their project. The paper explores how the engagement with latest tools available to architecture students changes their ability to discuss building physics with engineers and question precedence typology. The author describes the pedagogical challenges when helping architecture students to overcome obstacles in communicating engineering aspects inherent to the design process.

summary This paper aims to present a dynamic multi objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) framework for the purpose of generating 3D mass models in the context of housing design. The proposed MOGA framework contains static and dynamic modules such as regulations, environmental condition analysis as static, behavioral models, designer-specified goals, domain-specific goals based on building types as dynamic modules. Moreover comparison of two algorithmic approaches, implementation of a single and multiple objective genetic algorithms are compared in terms of variety and usability of the generated design solutions, fitness approximation performances and the speed of the algorithms (running time). In the scope of this study, the potentials andlimitations of the proposed MOGA framework in 3D form generation, its advantages over single objective genetic algorithm are discussed, conducted with a case study.
