summary The built environment is a complex juxtaposition of static matter and dynamic flows, tangible objects and human experiences, physical realities and digital spaces. This paper offers an alternative understanding of those dichotomies by applying experimental design research strategies that combine objective quantification and subjective perception of urban contexts. The assumption is that layers of measurable datasets can be afforded with personal feedback to reveal "hidden" characteristics of cities. Drawing on studies from data and cognitive sciences, the proposed method allows us to analyze, quantify and visualize the individual experience of the built environment in relation to different urban qualities. By operating in between the scientific domain and the design realm, four design research experiments are presented. Leveraging augmenting and sensing technologies, these studies investigate: (1) urban attractors and user attention, employing eye-tracking technologies during walking; (2) urban proxemics and sensory experience, applying proximity sensors and EEG scanners in varying contexts; (3) urban mood and spatial perception, using mobile applications to merge tangible qualities and subjective feelings; and (4) urban vibe and paced dynamics, combining vibration sensing and observational data for studying city beats. This work demonstrates that, by adopting a multisensory and multidisciplinary approach, it is possible to gain a more human-centered, and perhaps novel understanding of the built environment. A lexicon of experimented urban situations may become a reference for studying different typologies of environments from the user experience, and provide a framework to support creative intuition for the development of more engaging, pleasant, and responsive spaces and places.

summary To ensure access to sunlight in urban planning, specialized software is available. Mainly used in the initial stages, these tools allow the study of the environmental performance of the proposal. However, neighborhood impact is seen as a secondary aspect, usually evaluated with GIS tools, simulating pre-existing or proposed situations. However, visual programming tools allow, data processing in addition to parametric modeling, streamlining the process of analysis of architectural and urban pre-existences and proposals. From a case study, we present a methodology that uses these tools to demonstrate the loss of daylight performance of open spaces due to urban densification.

summary A city, defined as a unity of inhabitants with their environment and showing self-creating and self-maintaining properties, can be considered as an autopoietic system if we take into account its bottom-up processes with unpredictable behaviour of its components. Such a property can lead to self-creation of urban patterns. These processes are studied in well-known vernacular architectures and informal settlements around the world and they are able to adapt according to various conditions and forces. The main research objective is to establish a computational design-modelling framework for modelling autopoietic intricate characteristics of a city based on an adaptability, self-maintenance and self-generation of urban patterns with adequate visual representation.The paper introduces a modelling methodology that allows to combine planning tasks with inhabitants' interaction and data sources by using an interchange framework to model more complex urban dynamics. The research yields preliminary results tested in a simulation model of a redevelopment of Tanjong Pagar Waterfront, the container terminal in the city of Singapore being transformed into a new future centre as a conducted case study.

summary Beginning from a provocation in Auguste Blanqui’s Eternity by the Stars, this paper reports on a new methodology of digital collage for urban design. The research is situated relative to the current discourses surrounding both voxelization and point-cloud data structures in order to motivate the concept of a recombinant approach to design in existing cities. Building on these sources, and with reference to recent developments in mesh shape composition techniques, the paper presents the resulting software implementation “Point-Cloud-Paint”: a tool that enables collage-based combinatorial experimentation with urban point-cloud data.

summary The growth of urban settlements is a phenomenon on the rise. It is expected that more than 70% of the people will live in urban settlements by 2050. To be able to tackle and embrace this growth, we need alternative tools that help us to face these challenges. On this framework, this proposal aims to raise the paradigm of how the information can be gathered and used to equilibrate urban systems in terms of planning concerning the distribution of resources. To achieve this goal, the exchange of data through an organic system of biochemical interaction network is proposed.

summary In the last decades, urban design has been influenced by its relationship with landscape. This has led to a new approach formalised and called Landscape Urbanism. Defining specific reading and analysis instruments together with proper design methods, capable of a transdisciplinary dialogue with geography, plant and biological world's languages, landscape urbanism can undoubtedly obtain more performing purposes than the ones achieved by traditional urban planning. Moreover, new digital tools are appearing, providing urbanism with new instruments for an advanced and interactive way to design cities in close relationship with landscape. The process starts with the acquisition of large quantity of data, like georeferenced maps in conjunction with relevant information about the territory, such as traffic and atmospheric pollution data, important buildings and monuments or significant landscape elements (rivers, mountains, etc.). All this information is combined onto multiple layers in order to be used by different design algorithms, connected by multi-dimensional arrays, whose reciprocal relations are dynamically controlled by architects and engineers. We will present here the case study of an ecological and regenerative infrastructure for the city of Bergamo designed on the basis of these principles, using a convenient combination of parametric tools.

summary The chosen theme, Resilience Design, evidences the researchers’ concern about issues related to our reality of climate change and natural disasters, associated with the states of vulnerability and risk, having wide effects on society and the way we inhabit territories. These matters are fundamental and highly relevant for the disciplines and in the fields of design and architecture, as they are also important for collaborative work with areas emerging from the arts and human sciences. Thinking about Resilience Design is to set ourselves on new scenarios of reflection and action which, supported by transdisciplinary thinking and collaborative design, allow us to develop a new approach towards our territories and their demands, one that is more contextualized and adjusted to their current and future requirements, a starting point to establish the key elements to drive change in our cities and society. In this sense, technology and digital development, parametric design, the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), in addition to work done with Building Information Modelling (BIM), among many others, have been delivering an enormous amount of tools and possibilities of interaction with living in society, leading to a substantive change in the way of understanding and relating to the built environment and the territories where buildings are sit. This demands a strong commitment to Social Responsibility from our disciplines, besides the necessary landing of cutting-edge technological and digital research and development onto our diverse realities, in order for them to be put at the service of communities in vulnerable environments or with a marked condition of risk, which are subject to constant processes of resilience. Working on Resilience Design allows to support research and productive processes, plus the appearance of new technologies in interdisciplinary contexts, which greatest value is to impact the processes of teaching and professional practice in the different areas related to human habitation. The new professionals will have to take action and immerse themselves into these new scenarios of change and constant adjustment.

summary In an attempt to design shape-morphing multifunctional objects, this thesis uses programmable matter to design self-organizing multi-agent systems capable of morphing from one shape into another. The research looks at various precedents of self-assembly and modular robotics to design and prototype passive agents that could be cheaply mass-produced. Intelligence will be embedded into these agents on a material level, designing different local interactions to perform different global goals. The initial exploratory study looks at various examples from nature like plankton and molecules. Magnetic actuation is chosen as the external actuation force between agents. The research uses simultaneous digital and physical investigations to understand and design the interactions between agents. The project offers a systemic investigation of the effect of shape, interparticle forces, and surface friction on the packing and reconfiguration of granular systems. The ability to change the system state from a gaseous, liquid, then solid state offers new possibilities in the field of material computation, where one can design a "material" and change its properties on demand.

summary In architectural education, the demand for creating forms with a non-Euclidean geometry, which can only be achieved by using the computer-aided design tools, is increasing. The teaching of this subject is a great challenge for both students and instructors, because of the intensive nature of architecture undergraduate programs. Therefore, for the creation of those forms with a non-Euclidean geometry, experimental work was carried out in an elective course based on the learning visual programming language. The creation of folding structures with form-finding by simulation was chosen as the subject of the design production which would be done as part of the content of the course. In this particular course, it was intended that all stages should be experienced, from the modeling in the virtual environment to the digital fabrication. Hence, in their early years of architectural education, the students were able to learn versatile thinking by experiencing, simultaneously, the use of simulation in the environment of visual programming language, the forming space by using folding structures, the material-based thinking and the creation of their designs suitable to the digital fabrication.

summary In the past, there has been a rapid evolution in computational tools to represent and analyze architectural designs. Analysis tools can be used in all stages of the design process, but they are often only used in the final stages, where it might be too late to impact the design. This is due to the considerable time and effort typically needed to produce the analytical models required by the analysis tools. A possible solution would be to convert the digital architectural models into analytical ones, but unfortunately, this often results in errors and frequently the analytical models need to be built almost from scratch. These issues discourage architects from doing a performance-oriented exploration of their designs in the early stages of a project. To overcome these issues, we propose Algorithmic Design and Analysis, a method for analysis that is based on adapting and extending an algorithmic-based design representation so that the modeling operations can generate the elements of the analytical model containing solely the information required by the analysis tool. Using this method, the same algorithm that produces the digital architectural model can also automatically generate analytical models for different types of analysis. Using the proposed method, there is no information loss and architects do not need additional work to perform the analysis. This encourages architects to explore several design alternatives while taking into account the design’s performance. Moreover, when architects know the set of design variations they wish to analyze beforehand, they can easily automate the analysis process.

summary Acoustics is typically considered only late in developed design or even post occupancy, if at all, for specification of finishes and furnishing, and typically with a remedial mindset. In this paper, the role of sound performance as a design driver in increasing the speech privacy of a semi-enclosed meeting space in an open plan interior is studied. Sound performance prediction is applied as an imperative input to inform the meeting space design. The design is the second iteration in an evolving series of meeting spaces, and therefore has benefited from both subjective experiments and objective measurements performed with the first meeting space prototype. This study promotes a design method that offers a strong relationship between the digital simulation of sound performance and design development. By improving the speech privacy of a meeting space by means of purely form, geometry and design decisions, the significance of architecture in tuning the sound performance of a space is investigated.

summary The challenges on the ways of producing and teaching architecture, in the face of new digital technologies, led us to develop guidelines for updating didactic strategies in the area of teaching geometry and graphic representation in architecture courses. In order to do so, it is proposed to use the SWOT matrix as a way to cross-check what is being discussed. To identify the factors of the matrix, in the research environment we identify Opportunities and Threats and, using as examples the works of the Sagrada Familia Temple and the Guggenheim Museum, we identify Strenghts and Weaknesses.

summary This article aims to present a Methodological Guide to add gamification elements to the Geodesign framework when planning the future of the city, using Geogames such Minecraft, with the participation of children in Tirol, in Brazil. The problematic tackled is related to the challenges that participants of a Geodesign workshop face when co-designing projects as alternative futures for the territory, such as losing engagement and involvement. To support the participants overcome these challenges we incorporate playfulness into the some of the Geodesign workshop phases enhancing geovisualization, collaboration and cognition.

summary In the last few years, building renovation has gained an unprecedented relevance in Portugal, yet it is an asymmetric and urban phenomenon for the study of which, in space and in time, traditional statistic tools have limitations. Using computational tools, it is possible to generate maps that correlate building permits georeferenced data and their processing time. Using Lisbon City Hall database of planning applications and georeferenced vector information, two approaches are developed to represent the internal dynamic of renewal of the city between 2010 and 2016. These maps can be useful to improve the accessibility of planning information to citizens.

summary This paper investigates through a review of the current literature on smart cities, reflecting different concepts across different political-social contexts, seeking to contribute to the establishment of a critical framework for smart cities development. The present work provides a review of the literature of 250 selected publications from four databases (Scielo, ScienceDirect, worldwide science, and Cumincad), covering the years from 2012 to 2018. Publications were categorised by the following steps: 3RC framework proposed by Kummitha and Crutzen (2017), the main political sectors of city planning, implementation strategies, computational techniques, and organisation rules. The information was analised graphically trying to identify tendencies along the time, and also, seeking to explore future possibilities for implementations in different political-social contexts. As a case of study, Australia and Brazil were compared using the proposed framework.

summary Clash Detection refers to the identification of geometrical overlaps within a Building Information Model (BIM). This paper seeks to extend the notion of overlapping to activities: Given a construction site within a building, we seek to find clashes between construction activities and occupant routines. Such a situation is often encountered in the context of refurbishments of complex buildings operating 24/7 (e.g. airports, train stations, hospitals, prisons). By finding the influence radii of adverse effects resulting from construction - i.e. dust, noise and vibrations, functions may be temporarily relocated in order to guarantee uninterrupted operation. Our tool CONVIS implements these simulation and scheduling aspects and seeks to provide a digital project plan for refurbishments in the said context.

summary This article describes an augmented reality exposition of three Brazilian World Expo pavilions. The study of Expo pavilions allow us to perceive several historic and cultural narratives embodied in those designs. The selected pavilions were from 1939 New York World’s Fair (by Oscar Niemeyer and Lucio Costa), 1958 Brussels World’s Fair (by Sergio Bernardes) and 1970 Osaka Expo ’70 (by Paulo Mendes da Rocha). The exposition is going to be held at the main campus of UFRJ, using Layar technology with minor adaptations to show the models in natural scale along with their corresponding information, discussing locative media opportunities regarding Architecture and Virtual Heritage.

summary Direct solar access and daylight requirements contribute significantly when it comes to shaping the layout and appearance of contemporary cities. Urban planning regulations in Estonia set the minimum amount of direct solar access that existing housing has the right to receive and new premises are required to get when new developments are built. The solar envelope and solar collection methods are used to define the volume and shape of new buildings that allow the due solar rights to the surrounding buildings, in the case of the former, and the portion of the own façades that receive the required direct solar access, in the case of the latter. These methods have been developed over a period of several decades, and present-day CAAD and environmental analysis software permits the generation of solar envelopes and solar collection isosurfaces, although they suffer from limitations. This paper describes an advanced method for generating solar collection isosurfaces and presents evidence that it is significantly more efficient than the existing method for regulation in Estonia’s urban environments.

summary In emerging countries there is a need for rapid urban planning, since they are confronted by unprecedented wave of urbanization. This need is even bigger since usually there is no adequate number of professional educated urban planners in these countries. Therefore, we investigate in this paper how to develop a set of methods that allow to generate urban fabric semi-automatically. The challenge is to come up with a generative planning model that adapts to multiple boundary conditions.Through a modular design strategy generative methods are applied by students in an urban design studio in order to combine them into more complex planning strategies for small cities in the emerging country of Ethiopia. The modular approach allows to break down planning into sub-issues to better deal with the overarching problem. For testing the implemented generative urban design strategies various cities are generated at different locations in Ethiopia with various topographic situations. Their underlying design strategies and modular approach are discussed in this paper.

summary The following paper proposes a way of reading and systematizing 3d representations of cities in video games. These representations are the result of a complex design problem not solely limited to 3d graphical representations. In fact, every 3d city is a designed artefact, an outcome of a design process that shares many common points with the architectural design process. Four main characteristics of 3d cities in videogames have been identified and described, namely: interaction/gameplay, narrative, architectural and urban representations, and graphical representations. The study of 3d cities in video games can also let us reflect on and improve our real cities. This piece of writing is part of a larger project that intends to investigate aspects of video games that can bring innovative approaches and theories into architecture and related fields. A further aim of the work is to raise interest and awareness on the topic and generate further discussions.
