summary Studying interactions in museums often omits to consider the complexity of the space and the visitors' behaviors. Visitors' walking paths do not provide enough insight of their user experience (UX) since they are distant from the experiential realities. Videogrammetry can convey such dimensions of an environmental experience. Because of limitations of real-time playback, a twofold approach is suggested: "immersive videos" combined with "photogrammetric models". A granular optimal experience assessment method using retrospection interviews is also applied providing a finer evaluation of the perceived experience through time. This method permits to characterize museum interactive installations, according to the perceived challenges and skills of the interaction's task, based this time on immersive retrospection. This paper proposes the "Immersive retrospection" by "Immersive video-photogrammetry" as a UX assessment tool of interactions in museums. A hybrid virtual environment was used in this study, allowing social VR without the use of headsets, through a life-sized projection of interactive 3D content. The study showed that Immersive video-photogrammetry facilitates the recall of memories and allows a deepened self-observation analysis.

summary The paper introduces the methodology related to the topic of citizen-driven urban design and revises the idea of on-site participation of end-users, which could prospectively lead to customisation of architectural and urban space in a full-scale. The research in the first phase addresses the engagement of information technologies used for idea sketching in participatory design workshop related to local urban issues in the city of Chur in Switzerland by means of the Skity tool, the sketching on-line platform running on all devices. Skity allows user, which can be individual citizens or a community, to sketch, build, and adapt their ideas for the improvement of an urban locality. The participant is the expert of the locality because he or she lives in this place every day. The content of this paper is focused on the participatory design research project conducted as a study at the ETH Zürich and the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft HTW in Chur in collaboration with Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore, mainly concentrated on the first step of the methodological approach introduced here.

summary This paper forms part of a broader inquiry regarding possible theoretical models for interpreting and understanding digital architectural design. Such models include hermeneutics, activity theory and design protocols. Starting by highlighting the limits of computational methods in an architectural context, it will be attempted to explore certain implications of the introduction of digital media in the design process. Certain elements from the field of hermeneutics will be introduced in order to understand the impact computational logic has on architectural culture especially in a pedagogical setting. It is argued that such an understanding is crucial in order to design effective strategies for architectural design education in the Information Age.

summary Urban dashboards visualize information about the measured performance, structure, patterns and trends of cities. This paper introduces a concept of urban dashboard as a platform for participation, research, and service development. We present and reflect the development process of the City Monitor, which is a test version of an urban dashboard for the pilot cities participating in the SenCity project. The paper describes and reflects on the concept, structure, and content of the City Monitor and its participatory and iterative development process, through a case study. The case study encompasses a pilot implementation of the dashboard concept in a context of a housing area in the Finnish city of Salo, where intelligent roadway lighting was tested.

summary This talk will present a series of projects from the Digital Design Build Studio. The Studio explores the relation between computation, materiality, tectonics and structure at an architectural scale. The research presented in the talk will have a focus on an investigation on polymers. The talk will also use these explorations to discuss a model of operation for architecture schools in the context of a profession that has been disrupted by digital technology. Talking about some projects in more detail will illustrate the findings of the experimentation with different polymers. The discussion will also highlight the social aspect of these interventions and illustrate how coalitions between non-profit organizations, developers, industry and municipalities may benefit and impact their communities.

title From representational to parametric and algorithmic interactions: A panorama of Digital Architectural Design teaching in Latin America

summary This study focuses on the context of graphic representation technologies and digital design on Architectural teaching in Latin America. From categories proposed by Oxman and Kotnik and through a mapping study framed by a systematic review in CumInCAD database, it is presented a panorama of the state-of-art of the digital design on Architectural teaching in the region, between 2006 and 2015. The results suggest a context of coexistence of representational interaction and parametric interaction, as well as a transition from one to another and the emergence of the first experiments in algorithmic interaction. As this mapping shows an ongoing movement toward Digital Architectural Design in Latin America in the last decade, and points out its dynamics in space in time, it could contribute to strengthen a crowdthinking network on this issue in the region and with other continents.

summary External shading structures are a well-established typology for reducing solar heat loads. A major disadvantage is their inflexible nature, blocking views from inside and desired solar radiation for seasons with less sunshine hours. An adaptive approach on the other end can accommodate dynamic environmental exchange and user control. Furthermore, kinetic movement has great potential to create expressive spatial structures. However, such typologies are inherently complex. This paper presents the design process for two novel adaptive façade typologies, conducted on an experimental level in an educational context. Moreover, we will discuss the conception of a suitable methodological framework, which we applied to engage the complexity of this design task. Thereby we will highlight the importance of employing various methods, combining analogue and computational models not in a linear sequence, but rather in an overlapping, iterative way to create an innovation friendly design setting. The Sun Shades project offers insight into the relationships between design potentials inherent in adaptable structures and the advantages and limitation of computational methods employed to tackle them.

summary The research presented in this paper seeks to examine how architecture and computational tools can be used to communicate on multiple levels by incorporating a series of qualitative and quantitative measures as criteria for a spatial and architectural design. Air is taken as a material that has the capacity to create boundaries, yet unless under extreme conditions often remains invisible. Varying in qualities such as temperature, humidity and pollution, the status of air is highly local to a particular context. The research explores how rendering air visible through an architectural intervention made of networked sentient prototypes can be used in the reation of a responsive outdoor public space. Although humans' ability to perceive and respond to stimuli is highly advanced, it is nevertheless limited in its spectrum. Within the urban context specifically, the information, material and flux being produced is becoming ever more complex and incomprehensible. While computational tools, sensors and data are increasingly accessible, advancements in the fields of cognitive sciences and biometrics are unraveling how the mind and body works. These developments are explored in tandem and applied through a proposed methodology. The project aims to negotiate the similarities and differences between humans and machines with respect to the urban environment. The hypothesis is that doing so will create a rich output, irreducible to a singular reading while heightening user experience and emphasizing a sense of place.

summary The presence of web2.0 and traceable mobile devices creates new opportunities for urban designers to understand cities through an analysis of user-generated data. The emergence of “big data” has resulted in a large amount of information documenting daily events, perceptions, thoughts, and emotions of citizens, all annotated with the location and time that they were recorded. This data presents an unprecedented opportunity to gauge public opinion about the topic of interest. Natural language processing with social media is a novel tool complementary to traditional survey methods. In this paper, we validate these methods using tourism data from Trip-Advisor in Andorra. “Natural language processing” (NLP) detects patterns within written languages, enabling researchers to infer sentiment by parsing sentences from social media. We applied sentiment analysis to reviews of tourist attractions and restaurants. We found that there were distinct geographic regions in Andorra where amenities were reviewed as either uniformly positive or negative. For example, correlating negative reviews of parking availability with land use data revealed a shortage of parking associated with a known traffic congestion issue, validating our methods. We believe that the application of NLP to social media data can be a complementary tool for urban decision making.

summary Engineers and architects are now turning to use computational aids in order to analyze and solve complex design problems. Most of these problems can be handled by techniques that exploit Evolutionary Computation (EC). However existing EC techniques are slow [8] and hard to understand, thus disengaging the user. Swarm Intelligence (SI) relies on social interaction, of which humans have a natural understanding, as opposed to the more abstract concept of evolutionary change. The main aim of this research is to introduce a new solver Silvereye, which implements Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) in the Grasshopper framework, as the algorithm is hypothesized to be fast and intuitive. The second objective is to test if SI is able to solve complex design problems faster than ECbased solvers. Experimental results on a complex, single-objective high-dimensional benchmark problem of roof geometry optimization provide statistically significant evidence of computational inexpensiveness of the introduced tool.

summary Since the rise of generative design, a morphogenetic process of designing has emerged where algorithms are used to explore potential permutations of a solution to find the best design option. Yet, on a subjective level, identifying what option is considered best has often proven to be difficult. Hence, the paper discusses a foundation research to investigate prototypically subjective judgments concern matters of value and preference defined by end users in generative modelled urban design outcome. To do so the paper will introduce and outline research findings in the field of Micro-Economics, in particular its subcategories 'Choice Modelling' as a method and 'Revealed Preferences' as a methodology to assess whether user preferences can be identified and engaged as 'preferred' design options. In the paper the research will outline in greater depth the theories behind Choice Modelling and Revealed Preferences, a field that studies the behaviour of individuals, and its relevance for urban design, in particular Computational Urbanism. The paper discusses how Choice Modelling can analyse design outcomes and conclude and speculate about its use in an applied context.

keywords The paper discusses co-design, development, production, application of TreeHugger (see Figure 1). The co-design among community and trans-disciplinary participants with different expertise required scope of media mix, switching between analogue, digital and back again. This involves different degrees of physical and digital 'GIGA-Mapping' (Sevaldson, 2011, 2015), 'Grasshopper3d' (Davidson, 2017) scripting and mix of digital and analogue fabrication to address the real life world. The critical participation of this 'Time-Based Design' (Sevaldson, 2004, 2005) process is the interaction of the prototype with eco-systemic agency of the adjacent environment - the eco-systemic performance. The TreeHugger is a responsive solid wood insect hotel, generating habitats and edible landscaping (Creasy, 2004) on bio-tope in city centre of Prague. To extend the impact, the code was uploaded for communities to download, local-specifically edit and apply worldwide. Thus, the fusion of discussed processes is multi-scaled and multi-layered, utilised in emerging design field: Systemic Approach to Architectural Performance.

summary This paper explores the pedagogical context for the inclusion of daylight and wind simulation as part of architectural design-studio teaching. The author describes both challenges as well as opportunities encountered by architecture students who applied high-end technology for optimizing environmental conditions during the conceptual design of a residential project within a thirteen week studio. Students located their projects in an inner urban context in a 'Temperate' climate zone, meaning that they had to account for hot conditions in summer while considering wind-chill factors in winter. Based on the studio experience, the paper scrutinizes how students tackled Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and daylight analysis on different scales of their project. The paper explores how the engagement with latest tools available to architecture students changes their ability to discuss building physics with engineers and question precedence typology. The author describes the pedagogical challenges when helping architecture students to overcome obstacles in communicating engineering aspects inherent to the design process.

summary Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) as an integrated field between architecture and sociology has created practical guidelines for evaluating indoor human behavior within a built environment. This research builds on recent attempts to integrate datafication and machine learning into POE practices that may one day assist Building Information Modeling (BIM) and multi-agent modeling. This research is based on two premises: 1) that the proliferation of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology allows us to collect a building user’s data cost-effectively and 2) that the growing application of machine learning algorithms allows us to process, analyze and synthesize data efficiently. This study illustrates that the mobile platform HalO can serve as a generic tool for datafication and automation of data analysis of the movement of a building user. In this research, the iOS mobile application HalO, combined with BLE beacons enable building providers (architects, developers, engineers and facility managers etc.) to collect the user’s indoor location data. Triangulation was used to pinpoint the user’s indoor positions, and k-means clustering was applied to classify users into different gathering groups. Through four research procedures—Design Intention Analysis, Data Collection, Data Storage and Data Analysis—the visualized and classified data helps building providers to better evaluate building performance, optimize building operations and improve the accuracy of simulations.

summary This paper presents a computational setup for public space quality attribute measurement that leverages GIS technologies, remote access and actual databases. The goal of this research study is to objectify public space qualities established by prior research and verify these in a specific context. In particular, this work uses liveliness as a quality criterion for public space and analyses its interrelationship to space descriptive attributes represented by the objective characteristics of the existing public spaces. summary When designing interactive architectural systems and environments, the ability to gather user feedback in real time provides valuable insight into how the system is received and ultimately performs. However, physically testing or simulating user behavior with an interactive system outside of the actual context of use can be challenging due to time constraints and assumptions that do not reflect accurate social, behavioral, or environmental conditions. Employing evidence based, user-centered design practices from the field of human–computer interaction (HCI) coupled with emerging architectural design methodologies creates new opportunities for achieving optimal system performance and design usability for interactive architectural systems. This paper presents a methodology for developing a mixed reality computational workflow combining 3D depth sensing and virtual reality (VR) to enable iterative user-centered design. Using an interactive museum installation as a case study, user pointcloud data is observed via VR at full scale and in real time for a new design feedback experience. Through this method, the designer is able to virtually position him/herself among the museum installation visitors in order to observe their actual behaviors in context and iteratively make modifications instantaneously. In essence, the designer and user effectively share the same prototypical design space in different realities. Experimental deployment and preliminary results of the shared reality workflow are presented to demonstrate the viability of the method for the museum installation case study and for future interactive architectural design applications. Contributions to computational design, technical challenges, and ethical considerations are discussed for future work.

summary Legal actions towards a mandatory environmental impact assessment (EIA) of buildings can be expected in the (near) future. Due to the complexity of EIA, software tools will become an indispensable aid in the architectural design process. Especially in early design, feedback on the environmental impact is needed, since early design decisions have a major influence on the final impact of the design. However, most existing EIA tools insufficiently take into account the architect's needs as a user and are especially not suitable for use in early design. Therefore, an evaluation framework with criteria for architect-friendliness of EIA tools, with a specific focus on early design, is developed based on a large-scale survey, interviews and a focus group with practising architects. This framework can be used to evaluate the architect-friendliness of existing EIA tools and as a guidance for the development of new architect-oriented tools.

summary This paper will address the possibility of a design based on social emergence in contrast with author based design in a realized project. It will discuss the process and its implications within the theory and technological framework of this experience, simultaneously legitimizing the possibility of applying design and digital fabrication technologies in the Latin American context, exposing advantages and disadvantages of the experiment, concluding with a couple scenarios, one in which design is marginalized to technique, and the other were it broadens its field of knowledge.

summary This research was put together by four Master's students from KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture, who are self-motivated to investigate the possibilities of collective methods for designing within the Urban context. This paper is divided into two parts, the first being a scholarly investigation into learning from the collective mentality shift, and movements; discovering the added values of operating immersion/eversion from the virtual worlds to the physical one and analyzing key factors for engaging the public on online communities. Following, the paper brings to light the challenges the future of urban planning faces during today's digital shift and the solutions possible through the introduction of digital platforms as support to urban planning structures. The second part is the complementation of the first, as the research team showcases the findings by testing out the learned concepts and conducting on-field social experiments. The paper concludes with an analysis of the results, and future directions to the research project.
