summary This paper provides a theoretical discourse on ontological instruments in design by exploring the ways in which design and technology might help get us back to an understanding of our own humanity. The intent of this theoretical discourse is to illuminate the possibilities of what can be, by looking at history as a way to see the world with perspective and as a predictor of what may happen. Another objective is to demonstrate the proof of those possibilities through the presentation of two design research projects which actualize those ideas. The first project is a prototype for an interactive chair that explores the calming effects of conscious and synchronized breathing. The second project is a reinterpretation of the veil and explores the relationship between the individual and the public. Both projects are artistic and performative in character and are embedded in a theoretical discourse on ontological instruments and investigate the opportunities of interaction of the human body with the environment moderated by technology.

summary The authors of the paper research the aspects of two approaches in human-computer collaboration to solve an urban scale problem: positioning a new cycling-pedestrian bridge in the city of Warsaw. The first approach is a machine-driven stochastic optimization combined with the shortest walk algorithm; the second one is a human-centered process involving an interactive table as a way of communication and data input. Both approaches were explored as part of a one-week student workshop. The article covers the undertaken techniques in detail and presents the outcomes of both studies. It concludes with a reflection on the necessity to inspire a discussion about the future of the architecture among apprentices of the profession: with all the potential threats and opportunities deriving from computer automation.

summary City built-form guidelines act as durable constraints on building design decisions. Such guidelines directly impact energy, comfort and other performance conditions. Existing urban design and planning methods only consider a narrow range of potential design scenarios, with rudimentary performance criteria, resulting in suboptimal urban designs. Bibil is a software plugin for the Rhinoceros3D/Grasshopper3D CAD modeler that addresses this gap through the synthesis of design space exploration methods to help design teams optimize guidelines for environmental and energy performance criteria over the life cycle of the city. Bibil consists of three generative and data management modules. The first module simulates development scenarios from street and block information through time, the second designs appropriate architectural typology, and the third abstracts the typologies into a lightweight analysis model for detailed thermal load and energy simulation. State-of-the-art performance simulation is done via the Ladybug Analysis Tools Grasshopper3D plugin, and further bespoke analysis to explore the resulting design space is achieved with custom Python scripts.This paper first introduces relevant background for automated exploration of urban design guidelines. Then the paper surveys the state-of-the-art in design and performance simulation tools in the urban domain. Next the paper describes the beta version of the tool’s three modules and its application in a built form study to assess urban canyon performance in a major North American city. Bibil enables the exploration of a broader range of potential design scenarios, for a broader range of performance criteria, over a longer period of time.

summary Acoustics is typically considered only late in developed design or even post occupancy, if at all, for specification of finishes and furnishing, and typically with a remedial mindset. In this paper, the role of sound performance as a design driver in increasing the speech privacy of a semi-enclosed meeting space in an open plan interior is studied. Sound performance prediction is applied as an imperative input to inform the meeting space design. The design is the second iteration in an evolving series of meeting spaces, and therefore has benefited from both subjective experiments and objective measurements performed with the first meeting space prototype. This study promotes a design method that offers a strong relationship between the digital simulation of sound performance and design development. By improving the speech privacy of a meeting space by means of purely form, geometry and design decisions, the significance of architecture in tuning the sound performance of a space is investigated.

title Reconnoitring computational potentials of the vault-like forms: Thinking aloud on muqarnas tectonics

summary This study sheds light on a holistic understanding of muqarnas with its historical, philosophical and conceptual backgrounds on one hand and formal, structural and algorithmic principles on the other hand. The vault-like Islamic architectural element, muqarnas, is generally considered to be a non-structural decorative element. Various compositional approaches have been proposed to reveal the inner logic of these complex geometric elements. Each of these approaches uses different techniques such as measuring, unit-based decoding or three-dimensional interpretation of two-dimensional patterns. However, the reflections of the inner logic onto different contexts, such as the usage of different initial geometries, materials or performative concerns, were neglected. In this study, we offer a new schema to approach the performative aspects of muqarnas tectonics. This schema contains new sets of elements, properties and relations deriving partly from previous approaches and partly from the technique of folding. Thus, this study first reviews the previous approaches to analyse the geometric and constructional principles of muqarnas. Second, it explains the proposed scheme through a series of algorithmic form-finding experiments. In these experiments, we question whether ‘fold’, as one of the performative techniques of making three-dimensional forms, contributes to the analysis of muqarnas in both a conceptual and computational sense. We argue that encoding vault-like systems via geometric and algorithmic relations based on the logic of the ‘fold’ provides informative and intuitive feedback for form-finding, specifically in the earlier phases of design. While focusing on the performative potential of a specific fold operation, we introduced the concept of bifurcation to describe the generative characteristics of folding technique and the way of subdividing the form with respect to redistribution of the forces. Thus, in this decoding process, the bifurcated fold explains not only to demystify the formal logic of muqarnas but also to generate new forms without losing contextual conditions.

summary The built environment is a complex juxtaposition of static matter and dynamic flows, tangible objects and human experiences, physical realities and digital spaces. This paper offers an alternative understanding of those dichotomies by applying experimental design research strategies that combine objective quantification and subjective perception of urban contexts. The assumption is that layers of measurable datasets can be afforded with personal feedback to reveal "hidden" characteristics of cities. Drawing on studies from data and cognitive sciences, the proposed method allows us to analyze, quantify and visualize the individual experience of the built environment in relation to different urban qualities. By operating in between the scientific domain and the design realm, four design research experiments are presented. Leveraging augmenting and sensing technologies, these studies investigate: (1) urban attractors and user attention, employing eye-tracking technologies during walking; (2) urban proxemics and sensory experience, applying proximity sensors and EEG scanners in varying contexts; (3) urban mood and spatial perception, using mobile applications to merge tangible qualities and subjective feelings; and (4) urban vibe and paced dynamics, combining vibration sensing and observational data for studying city beats. This work demonstrates that, by adopting a multisensory and multidisciplinary approach, it is possible to gain a more human-centered, and perhaps novel understanding of the built environment. A lexicon of experimented urban situations may become a reference for studying different typologies of environments from the user experience, and provide a framework to support creative intuition for the development of more engaging, pleasant, and responsive spaces and places.

summary Every city has under utilized spaces that create a series of serious negative effects. Waiting for major interventions, those spaces can be reactivated and revitalized with soft temporary projects: micro interventions that light up the attention, give new meaning and add a new reading to abandoned spaces. We can call this kind of operations "plug-in design", inheriting the term from computer architecture: interventions which aim to involve the citizens and activate the environment, engage multiple catalyst processes and civil actions. Plug-in design interventions are by all meanings experimental, they seek for interaction with the users, locally and globally. Information Technology - with its parametric and site-specific capabilities and interactive features - can be instrumental to create such designs and generate a new consciousness of the existing environment. With this paper we will illustrate how two low-budget interventions have re-activated a forgotten public space. Parametric design with a specific script allowing site-specific design, materials and structure optimization and a series of interactive features, will be presented through Reciprocal 1.0 and Reciprocal 2.0 projects which have been built in 2016 in Italy by the nITro group.

summary Driven by technology, this multidisciplinary research focuses on the implementation of a photomechanical material into a reactive wearable that aims to protect the body from the ultraviolet radiation deriving from the sun. In this framework, the wearable becomes an active, supplemental skin that not only protects the human body but also augments its functions, such as movement and respiration. The embedded knowledge enables the smart material to sense and exchange data with the environment in order to passively actuate a system that regulates the relation between the body and its surroundings in an attempt to maintain equilibrium. The design strategy is defined by 4 sequential steps: a) The definition of the technical problem, b) the analysis of the human body, c) the design of the reactive material system, as well as d) the digital simulations and the digital fabrication of the system. The aforementioned design strategies allow for accuracy as well as high performance optimization and predictability in such complex design tasks, enabling the creation of customized products, designed for individuals.

summary New technologies and uncontrolled open-data policies lead public to a new way of approaching the built environment. To enlarge the competences of the professionals that work within the cities, we believe that providing a deep and dynamic knowledge on the heritage and urban built environment is the more effective solution to offer a unique support to the needs. By providing a boosted geographical database with detailed information about the status of each building, we aim to support the professional by providing a neat vision about vacant buildings available citywide. We think this knowledge is an important asset in covering every kind of public requests: from flat to rent to an abandoned building to restore or to drive better investors. The city of Trento will be the pilot project to test these statements.We studied the phenomenon of pushing new constructions rather investing on the reuse of abandoned buildings with the consequences of unsustainable land use. To address the work we adopted a comprehensive approach across the fields of urbanism, ICT engineering and social sciences. We believe that sharing knowledge and know-hows with municipalities, agencies, and citizens is the way to support better market strategies as well as urban transformation policies.

summary This paper introduces the theoretical considerations underlying the design of a digitally designed and Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) fabricated public installation project in the city of Austin, Texas. The project, The Creek Zipper, is an assemblage of exo?related units that symbolically reconnects two divided city neighborhoods, establishes a new relationship between the synthetic and natural, and inflates a two?dimensional graphic into a three?dimensional form. The project can be clearly read as a whole from a distance, but as one approaches, the legibility of each part begins to overwhelm the perception of the whole. As the form of the whole dissipates, the project gains a field?like presence, revealing different sets of discrete figures nested within the larger whole. The Creek Zipper addresses these multiple overlapping dichotomies that act as design generators and promote a dynamic expression of the project.

summary This paper investigates through a review of the current literature on smart cities, reflecting different concepts across different political-social contexts, seeking to contribute to the establishment of a critical framework for smart cities development. The present work provides a review of the literature of 250 selected publications from four databases (Scielo, ScienceDirect, worldwide science, and Cumincad), covering the years from 2012 to 2018. Publications were categorised by the following steps: 3RC framework proposed by Kummitha and Crutzen (2017), the main political sectors of city planning, implementation strategies, computational techniques, and organisation rules. The information was analised graphically trying to identify tendencies along the time, and also, seeking to explore future possibilities for implementations in different political-social contexts. As a case of study, Australia and Brazil were compared using the proposed framework.

summary We present an auto-parameterisation tool, implemented in Python, that takes in a semantic model, in CityGML format, and outputs a parametric model. The parametric model is then used for design optimisation of solar availability and urban ventilation potential. We demonstrate the tool by parameterising a CityGML model regarding building height, orientation and position and then integrate the parametric model into an optimisation process. For example, the tool parameterises the orientation of a design by assigning each building an orientation parameter. The parameter takes in a normalised value from an optimisation algorithm, maps the normalised value to a rotation value and rotates the buildings. The solar and ventilation performances of the rotated design is then evaluated. Based on the evaluation results, the optimisation algorithm then searches through the parameter values to achieve the optimal performances. The demonstrations show that the tool eliminates the need to set up a parametric model manually, thus making optimisation more accessible to designers.

summary We present a workflow to automatically generate semantic 3D city models from conceptual massing models. In the workflow, the massing design is exported as a Collada file. The auto-conversion method, implemented as a Python library, identifies city objects by analysing the relationships between the geometries in the Collada file. For example, if the analysis shows that a closed poly surface satisfies certain geometrical relationships, it is automatically converted to a building. The advantage of this workflow is that no extra modelling effort is required, provided the designers are consistent in the geometrical relationships while modelling their massing design. We will demonstrate the feasibility of the workflow using three examples of increasing complexity. With the success of the demonstrations, we envision the utoconversion of massing models into semantic models will facilitate the sharing of city models between domain-specific experts and enhance communications in the urban design process.

summary The use of daylight for the inhabitants health and comfort purposes and for the energy efficiency of buildings influences significantly the shape and outlook of urban environments. The solar envelope and solar collection surface are methods to define the massing of buildings for direct solar access requirements. They have been recently improved to be used in the design of buildings in relation to the Estonian daylight standard. Nevertheless the solar collection method can be applied only to single buildings with simple shape. The present research investigates the direct solar access performance of building clusters with multiple layouts in different urban areas in the city of Tallinn. Result show that different patterns perform in significant different ways whereas the same cluster types have the best and the least performances in all the cases.

summary As the result of the demolishing decision of Humberto Perea was generated, a Seminar- Workshop on CG at Universidad del Norte with the purpose of evaluate his heritage´s modern movement in Barranquilla. The Seminar´s objective was to design a methodology for documenting the building through technologies: CG and mixed realities. The methodology contents two parts; First, the building incorporated into the context with previous to the demolition and with architectural survey. And second part was developed with the Seminar - Workshop and Immersive Virtual Reality. As conclusion was demonstrated that any heritage building can be documenting to be used by researchers.

summary Internet of Things, pervasive nets, Knowledge ‘on tap’, Big Data, Wearable devices and the ‘Third wave’ of AI are disruptive technologies that are upsetting our globalised world as far as it can be foreseen from now. So academicians, professionals, researchers, innovation factories... are warmly invited to further shake up and boost our innovative and beloved CAAD world with new ideas, paradigms and points of view. Will our fine buildings and design traditions survive? Or, will they ‘simply’ be hybridized and enhanced by methods, techniques and CAAD tools? Obviously computation is needed to match the evergrowing performance requirements, but this is not enough to answer all these questions we have to deal with the essence of problems: improve design solutions for a better life. As life is not a matter of single individuals, we need to increase collaboration and to improve knowledge sharing. This means taking care of human beings, and involves a humanistic approach, and the long history of humankind ... from humans to thinking to technology ... and vice versa. A circle of human beings as eternal as our city.

summary Internet of Things, pervasive nets, Knowledge ‘on tap’, Big Data, Wearable devices and the ‘Third wave’ of AI are disruptive technologies that are upsetting our globalised world as far as it can be foreseen from now. So academicians, professionals, researchers, innovation factories... are warmly invited to further shake up and boost our innovative and beloved CAAD world with new ideas, paradigms and points of view. Will our fine buildings and design traditions survive? Or, will they ‘simply’ be hybridized and enhanced by methods, techniques and CAAD tools? Obviously computation is needed to match the evergrowing performance requirements, but this is not enough to answer all these questions we have to deal with the essence of problems: improve design solutions for a better life. As life is not a matter of single individuals, we need to increase collaboration and to improve knowledge sharing. This means taking care of human beings, and involves a humanistic approach, and the long history of humankind ... from humans to thinking to technology ... and vice versa. A circle of human beings as eternal as our city.

summary Computational visual simulations are extremely useful and powerful tools for decision-making. The use of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) has become a common phenomenon due to real-time and interactive visual simulation tools in architectural and urban design studies and presentations. In this study, a demonstration is performed to integrate Structure from Motion (SfM) into VR and AR. A 3D modeling method is explored by SfM under realtime rendering as a solution for the modeling cost in large-scale VR. The study examines the application of camera parameters of SfM to realize an appropriate registration and tracking accuracy in marker-less AR to visualize full-scale design projects on a planned construction site. The proposed approach is applied to plural real architectural and urban design projects, and results indicate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

summary This paper presents the results from exploring the concept of ekphrastic expression as the foundation for a computation method to aid creative design. Ekphrasis or ekphrastic expression is the expression of a concept that is represented in one medium in another separate medium. The paper describes the concepts of ekphrastic expression and presents two implemented examples that demonstrate the method and produce new results. The first example involves the creation of new shapes through representing the shape designs in the evolutionary domain and introducing new operators within that domain beyond the standard evolutionary operators of crossover and mutation. The second example involves the creation of new genes to represent aspects of Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie House style. This generates a space of genomes beyond those that were there at the commencement of the process. New designs that could not be directly produced in the original domain are generated.

title Space and Motion: Data-Driven Model of 4D Pedestrian Behavior

summary The understanding of space relies on motion, as we experience space by crossing it in time, space’s fourth dimension. However, architects lack the necessary tools to incorporate people's motion into their design of space. As a consequence, architects fail to connect space with the motion of the people that inhabit their buildings, creating disorienting environments. Further, what if augmentation technology changes how we inhabit space and the static built environment does not fit people anymore? This paper explores the problem of developing a model from people's motion, to inform and augment the architecture design process in the early stages. As an outcome, I have designed a model based on data from human-space interaction obtained through field work. First, relevant behavior was identified and recorded. Second, a metric was extracted from the data and composed by speed, the 4th D dimension as time, and gestures. Third, the original behavior was rebuilt, producing a set of rules. The rules were combined to form the model of human-space interaction. This generalizable model provides a novel approach to designing space based on data from people. Moreover, this paper presents a means of incorporating inhabitants' behavior into digital design. Finally, the model contributes to the advancement of people's motion research for general applications, such as in transport engineering, robotics, and cognitive sciences.
