summary The inversion of knowledge structure in electronics prototyping platform has allowed designers and architects to design and build reasonably stable mechatronic systems to aid novel material production; these new and hacked computer numeric controlled (CNC) machines are used to explore emerging material constructs and facilitate generative design processes. This paper examines tool making and questions the agentive capacity of such tools in design processes through a case study of a bespoke CNC machine which uses vacuum thermoforming techniques. Through understanding the agentive capacity of CNC tools, the authors suggest that the knowledge structure of tool making is distinctly different from fabrication workflow. This paper proposes an alternative means of understanding the capacity of CNC tools in the design and making process.

summary We describe one of the three core use-pattern building blocks of a parametric approach to simulating use-patterns in buildings. Use-patterns are modeled as events which use specified descriptions of spaces, actors and activities which constitute them. The simulation system relies on three fundamental patterns of use - move, meet and do. The move pattern is considered in detail in this paper with specific reference to what we term the partial knowledge issue. Modeling decision making about how to move through the space (what path to take) depends on modeling the actor's partial access to knowledge. Visibility is used as an example of partial knowledge. The parametric approach described in the paper enables the clear separation of syntactical and semantic conditions which inform decisions and the coordination of decisions made by agents in a simulation of use-patterns. This approach contributes to extending the analytical capability of Building Information Models from the point of view of evaluating how a proposed building design may be used, given complex, interrelated patterns of use.

summary This research tries to reflect on the idea of digitally conscious design, from the inception to the manufacturing process of a prototype. A theoretical reflection on the topic is followed by the discussion about the results at two different universities (Alicante and Naples) where students have been proposed a similar assignment: a digitally conscious design of a lamp. In Alicante, the methodological approach was guided by the relation of the ideation process and the use of specific digital fabrication strategies; students were encouraged to develop and rework their designs taking into account the way in which they should be digitally fabricated. In Naples the teaching proposal involved a disciplinary approach; a deep understanding of the digital fabrication processes including the manufacturing limitations of the machinery employed involving a precise geometric control over the design. In both cases, students had to face a real study case of the design and production making use of digital tools. This comprehensive approach implied the consideration of the project as a process making students aware of the difficulties of getting their ideas materialised through digital fabrication and how their designs had to evolve in order to step over the problems encountered in the manufacturing process in different ways.

summary Literature suggests that despite the increasing range and variety of computational tools and technologies, they have not really been employed for designing as extensively as it might be. This is due in part to the numerous challenges and impediments limiting their effective usage such as the methodological, procedural, and substantive factors and limitations, and skepticism about their impact of usage on the design process and outcome. The gap in our understanding of how advanced computational tools could support the design activities and design decision-making has expanded considerably to become a new area of inquiry with considerable room for the expansion of knowledge. This research is a single-case study that has been pursued in two phases: literature review and survey followed by analysis and discussion of the empirical results. The empirical observations were compared to the theoretical propositions and with results of similar research to highlight the areas and the extent to what the IT tools' usage have influenced the outcome of the design process. title Lumifoil and Tschumi: Virtual projections and architectural interventions

summary This article introduces the theoretical and technical framework for the design of a temporary rooftop canopy on the red generator—one of the buildings designed by Bernard Tschumi for the Florida International University School of Architecture. The project, Lumifoil, was designed using both top-down and bottom-up computational techniques, including surface modeling via projected geometries and scripted cellular subdivisions and assemblies. Lumifoil attempts to synthesize these two often-conflicting design approaches into a generative design process which leverages context, form, surface, and structure as affective and effective actors. Lumifoil is the result of a design methodology which is both active and reactive to existing conditions of the site and new opportunities afforded by the program. It is contextual in its top-down relationship to Tschumi’s existing building and theory, generative in how details emerge bottom-up through scripts which lack any reference to site, and emergent in the resulting synthetic processes and effects which are produced. Through this methodological development, the project both tracks and responds to popular architectural theory and design from the mid-1990s to today. The theoretical underpinnings of the project build upon the idea that the actual (the real-life physical manifestation of matter) and the virtual (the potential for an object to be) are two constantly shifting paradigms in which design processes can intervene to help develop an architectural solution from a range of possibilities. The technical aspect of the project includes the collaborative workflow between the architecture offices of OTA+ and studio MODO with Arup Engineers to resolve structural issues using parametric modeling tools and structural analysis software. The final project is entirely parametric and fabrication is completely automated.

summary In this study we show how Call Detail Record (CDR) can be used to better understand the travel patterns of visitors. We show how Origin-Destination (OD) Interactive Maps can provide transportation information through CDR. We then use aggregation of CDR to show the differences between the travel patterns of visitors from different countries and of different lengths of stay. We also show that visitors move differently during event periods and non-event periods, reflecting the importance of real-time data available by CDR. From CDR, we can gain more detailed and complete information about how tourists move compared to traditional surveys, which can be used to aid smarter transportation systems and urban resource planning.

summary For several years great effort has been devoted to the study of Architectural Design Optimization (ADO). However, although in the recent years ADO has attracted much attention from academia, optimization methods and tools have had a limited influence on the architectural profession. The aim of the study is to reveal users' expectations from the optimization tools and define limitations preventing wide-spread adaptation of the optimization solvers in the architectural practice. The paper presents the results of the survey "Optimization in the architectural practice" conducted between December 2015 and February 2016 on 165 architectural trainees and practising architects from 34 countries. The results show that there is a need for an interactive multi-objective optimization tool, as 78% respondents declared that a multi-objective optimization is more necessary in their practice than a single objective one and 91% of them acknowledged the need for choice of promising solutions during optimization process. Finally, it has been found that daylight, structure and geometry are three top factors which architects are interested in optimizing.

summary Cities are continuously produced through entropic processes that mediate between complex networked systems and the immediacy urban life. Emergent media technologies inform new relationships between information and matter, code and space to redefine new urban ecosystems. Modes of perceiving, experiencing and inhabiting cities are radically changing along with a radical transformation of the tools that we use to design. Cities as complex and systemic organisms require approaches that engage new multi-scalar strategies to connect the physical layer with the system of networked ecologies. This paper aims at investigating emerging and novel forms of reading and producing urban spaces reimagining the physical city through intelligent and mediated processes. Through data agency and responsive urban processes, the design methodology explored the materialization of a temporary pneumatic structure and membrane that tested material performance through fabrication and sensing practices through the pneuSENSE project developed in July 2016 in New York at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during the 'HyperCities' IaaC- Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia - Global Summer School.

summary Despite the advancement of digital design and fabrication technologies, design practices still follow Alberti’s hylomorphic model of separating the design phase from the construction phase. This separation hinders creativity and flexibility in reacting to surprises that may arise during the construction phase. These surprises often come as a result of a mismatch between the sophistication allowed by the digital technologies and the designer’s experience using them. These technologies and expertise depend on one human sense, vision, ignoring other senses that could be shaped and used in design and learning. Moreover, pedagogical approaches in the design studio have not yet fully integrated digital technologies as design companions; rather, they have been used primarily as tools for representation and materialization. This research introduces a multisensory computational model for human-machine making and learning. The model is based on a recursive process of embodied, situated, multisensory interaction between the learner, the machines and the thing-in-the-making. This approach depends heavily on computational making, abstracting, and describing the making process. To demonstrate its effectiveness, I present a case study from a course I taught at MIT in which students built full-scale, lightweight structures with embedded electronics. This model creates a loop between design and construction that develops students’ sensory experience and spatial reasoning skills while at the same time enabling them to use digital technologies as design companions. The paper shows that making can be used to teach design while enabling the students to make judgments on their own and to improvise.

summary Design tools like Grasshopper are often used to either generate novel forms, to automate certain design processes or to incorporate scientific factors. However, any Grasshopper definition has certain assumptions about design and space built into it from its earliest genesis, when the initial algorithm is set out. Correspondingly, implicit theoretical positions are built into definitions, and therefore its results. Approaching parametric design as a question of architectural, landscape architectural or urban design theory allows the breaking down of traditional boundaries between the technical and the historical or theoretical, and the way parametric design, and urban design history & theory, can be conveyed in the teaching environment. Once the boundaries between software and history & theory are transgressed, Grasshopper can be a way of testing the principles embedded in historical designs and thus these two disciplines can be joined. In urban design, there is an inherent clash between an ideal model and existing urban geography or morphology, and also between formal (qualitative) and numerical (quantitative) aspects. If a model provides a necessary vision for future development, an existing topography then results from the continuous human and natural modifications of a territory. To explore this hypothesis, the “Urban Design Representation” subject in the Master of Urban Design program at the University of Cape Town taught in 2017 & 2018 was approached “parametrically” from these two opposite, albeit convergent, starting points: the conceptual/rational versus the physical/empiric representations of a territory. In this framework, Grasshopper was used to represent typical standards and parameters of modern urban planning (for example, Floor/Area Ratio, height and distance between buildings, site coverage, etc), and a typological approach was adopted to study and “decode” the relationship between public and private space, between the street, the block and topography, between solids and voids. This methodology permits a cross-comparison of different urban design models and the immediate evaluation of their formal outputs derived from parametric data.

summary Computational visual simulations are extremely useful and powerful tools for decision-making. The use of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) has become a common phenomenon due to real-time and interactive visual simulation tools in architectural and urban design studies and presentations. In this study, a demonstration is performed to integrate Structure from Motion (SfM) into VR and AR. A 3D modeling method is explored by SfM under realtime rendering as a solution for the modeling cost in large-scale VR. The study examines the application of camera parameters of SfM to realize an appropriate registration and tracking accuracy in marker-less AR to visualize full-scale design projects on a planned construction site. The proposed approach is applied to plural real architectural and urban design projects, and results indicate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

summary Architecture is heading towards a future where data is collected, collated and presented in a dynamic platform. There is a potential for many standard processes in the industry to become automated, such as the site analysis process. Streamlining aspects of the design process allows architects to pay greater attention on creative design solutions for their buildings and less time engaging in complex, time consuming analytical programs. Urban Pinboard, a web-based GIS platform, promises to establish a bi-directional workflow between web data depositories and computational tools through the medium of a website. By doing so, the website allows users with minimal experience in computational processes to be engaged in the utilisation of these large datasets. Through the automation of these processes, relationships within the built environment industry can excel, leading towards performative driven designs.

summary Current advancements in information technology and mechanical components offer incredible new possibilities for innovation in architecture. Many aspects of our physical environment are becoming integrated with information systems, a phenomenon that has been referred to as the "Internet of Things." The implications and applications of this technology are far-reaching, and students who are learning about design in today's environment have a bewildering array of new tools available for their exploration. This paper reviews some of the central concepts of contemporary data-driven design, and describes how these concepts can be used in a pedagogical framework to encourage student innovation. The authors provide details about their work with students in IDR Studios, and highlight some of the innovative design solutions created by students using information-based toolsets. This research provides a pedagogical framework for helping design students to engage with new technological resources as they work to develop the architectural intelligence.

summary This paper attempts to reconsider the role of advanced tools and their effective implementation in the field of Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) through the concept of sustainable construction. In parallel, the paper aims to discuss and find common ground for communication between industrial and experimental processes guided by sustainable criteria, an area of investigation that is currently in the forefront of the research work conducted in our robotic construction laboratory. Within this frame, an ongoing work into the design, analysis and automated construction of a timber structure in actual scale is exemplified and used as a pilot study for further discussion. Specifically, the structure consists of superimposed layers of timber elements that are robotically cut and assembled together, formulating the overall structural system. In order to achieve a robust, reliable and economically feasible solution and to control the automated construction process, a multi-objective design optimization process using evolutionary principles is applied. Our purpose is to investigate possibilities for sustainable construction considering minimization of cost and material waste, and in parallel, discussing issues related to the environmental impact and the feasibility of solutions to be realized in actual scale.

summary Reviewing the current research trends in robotic fabrication around the world, the trajectory promises new opportunities for innovation in Architecture and the possible redefinition of the role of the Architect in the industry itself. New entrepreneurial, innovative start-ups are popping up everywhere challenging the traditional model of the architect. However, it also poses new questions and challenges in the education of the architect today. What are the appropriate pedagogical methods to instill enthusiasm for new technologies, materials, and craft? How do we avoid the pure application of pre-set tools, such as the use of the laser cutter has become, which in many schools around the world has caused problems rather than solving problems? How do we teach students to invent their tools especially in a society that doesn't have a strong background in the making? The primary focus of this paper is on how architectural CAAD/ CAM education through the use of robotic fabrication can enhance student's understanding, passion and knowledge of materiality, technology, and craftsmanship. The paper is based on the pedagogical set-up and method of an M. Arch I studio that was taught by the author in fall 2016 with the focus on robotic fabrication, materiality, traditional timber construction systems, tool design and digital and physical craftsmanship.

summary Europe is facing an increasing demand for new construction, which is pushing the industry away from traditional construction technology towards prefabrication and Mass-Customization. However, prefabrication-based construction requires a more efficient, better informed decision making process due to the increased difficulty of on-site variations. Furthermore, the lack of means to navigate the whole spectrum of solutions for a given design problem using traditional tools, and the absence of the manufacturer's input in the early phases of the project can present significant challenges for the efficiency of the design and construction process. As a way to face these challenges, this paper presents an approach, realized as an Autodesk Dynamo-for-Revit package called Box Module Generator (BMG), which enables the exhaustive generation of configurations for a given building based on a construction scheme that utilizes Box Prefabricates. The output can be sorted, dissected and explored by users in various ways and the building geometry can be generated automatically in a Building Information Modeling environment. This makes it possible for the projects' stakeholders to browse thousands of potential design alternatives, which would otherwise be very hard to explore manually, or using traditional parametric modelers.

summary We now witness an upsurge in mainstream generative design tools fortified by simulation that speed up the concealed linear synthesis of optimized design alternatives. In pursuit of optimality, these tools saturate local machines or cloud servers with analysis and design iteration data, only to discard it once the procedure has concluded. Largely absent, however, are tools for an active, adaptive relationship with design exploration and the reuse of corresponding design data and metadata. In Pattern Making and Pattern Learning, we propose that these characteristics are mutually beneficial. This paper presents a series of revisions to the optimization framework for routine design synthesis that examine a potential symbiosis between the production of large datasets (big data) and non-routine practices of making in design. Our engagement with iterative design exercises is twofold: as a supply of computer-generated design information to foster user intuition and explore the design space on non-objective terms, and as a supply of human-generated design information to learn artifacts of user preference in the interest of design software personalization. These concepts are applied to the generation of functionally graded patterning in chair design, combining methods of physical production with programmable sheet material behavior through a custom interactive synthesis framework.

title Investigations in robotic-assisted design: Strategies for symbiotic agencies in material-directed generative design processes

summary The research described in this article utilises a phase-changing material, three-dimensional scanning technologies and a six-axis industrial robotic arms as vehicles to enable a novel framework where robotic technology is utilised as an ‘amplifier’ of the design process to realise geometries that derive from both constructive visions and architectural visions through iterative feedback loops between them. The robot in this scenario is not a fabrication tool but the enabler of an environment where the material, robotic and human agencies interact. This article describes the exploratory research for the development of a dialogic design process, sets the framework for its implementation, carries out an evaluation based on designer use and concludes with a set of observations. One of the main findings of this article is that a deeper collaboration that acknowledges the potential of these tools, in a learning-by-design method, can lead to new choreographies for architectural design and fabrication.

title Emergent order through swarm fluctuations - A framework for exploring self-organizing structures using swarm robotics

summary In modern architecture, construction processes are based on top down planning, yet in nature but also in vernacular architecture, the shape of shelters/nests is the result of evolutionary material processes which takes place without any global coordination or plan. This work presents a framework for exploring how self-organizing structures can be achieved in a bottom up fashion by implementing a swarm of simple robots(bristle bots). The robots are used as a hardware platform and operate in a modular 2D arena filled with differently shaped passive building blocks. The robots push around blocks and their behaviour can be programmed mechanically by changing the geometry of their body. Through physical experimentation and video analysis the relationships between the properties of the emergent patterns (size, temporal stability) and the geometry of the robot/parts are studied. This work couples a set of agent based design tools with a robust robotic system and a set of analysis tools for generating and actualising emergent 2D structures.
