summary The gradual rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and its increasing visibility among many research disciplines affected Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAAD). Architectural deep learning (DL) approaches are being developed and published on a regular basis, such as retrieval (Sharma et al. 2017) or design style manipulation (Newton 2019; Silvestre et al. 2016). However, there seems to be no method to evaluate highly constrained spatial configurations for specific architectural domains (such as housing or office buildings) based on basic architectural principles and everyday practices. This paper introduces an automatic constraint-based consistency checker to evaluate the coherency of semantic spatial configurations of housing construction using a small set of design principles to evaluate our DL approaches. The consistency checker informs about the overall performance of a spatial configuration followed by whether it is open/closed and the constraints it didn't satisfy. This paper deals with the relation of spaces processed as mathematically formalized graphs contrary to existing model checking software like Solibri.

summary Currently most professional modeling and computer graphics software packages embed a scripting language. This is an early report on collecting data about software applications and coding tools geared towards the educational environment, preparing a listing for further evaluation and analysis of platforms. An increase in the adoption of Python as the embedded scripting syntax in many established tools can already be recognized, therefore the creation of educational materials on Python for design and architectural education merits further attention. Other insights on the educational potential of the available tools might be gained by advancing the data collection and evaluation work.

summary A city, defined as a unity of inhabitants with their environment and showing self-creating and self-maintaining properties, can be considered as an autopoietic system if we take into account its bottom-up processes with unpredictable behaviour of its components. Such a property can lead to self-creation of urban patterns. These processes are studied in well-known vernacular architectures and informal settlements around the world and they are able to adapt according to various conditions and forces. The main research objective is to establish a computational design-modelling framework for modelling autopoietic intricate characteristics of a city based on an adaptability, self-maintenance and self-generation of urban patterns with adequate visual representation.The paper introduces a modelling methodology that allows to combine planning tasks with inhabitants' interaction and data sources by using an interchange framework to model more complex urban dynamics. The research yields preliminary results tested in a simulation model of a redevelopment of Tanjong Pagar Waterfront, the container terminal in the city of Singapore being transformed into a new future centre as a conducted case study.

summary Gridshells are highly efficient, lightweight structures which can span long distances with minimal use of material (Vassallo & Malek 2017). One of the most promising and novel categories of gridshells are bending-active (elastic) systems (Lienhard & Gengnagel 2018), which are composed of flexible members (Kuijenhoven & Hoogenboom 2012). Timber elastic gridshells can be site-sprung or sequentially erected (geodesic). While a lot of research focus is on the site-sprung ones, the methods for design of sequentially-erected geodesic gridshells remained underdeveloped (Cichocka 2020). The main objective of the paper is to introduce a method of generating regular geodesic grid patterns on free-form surfaces and to examine its applicability to design structurally feasible geodesic gridshells. We adopted differential geometry methods of generating regular bidirectional geodesic grids on free-form surfaces. Then, we compared the structural performance of the regular and the irregular grids of the same density on three free-form surfaces. The proposed method successfully produces the regular geodesic grid patterns on the free-form surfaces with varying curvature-richness. Our analysis shows that gridshells with regular grid configurations perform structurally better than those with irregular patterns. We conclude that the presented method can be readily used and can expand possibilities of application of geodesic gridshells.

summary This paper examines the current state of the conventional Design-Bid-Build project, wherein design intentions are manually translated to construction directives by subcontractors based on industry-specific details. This process exacerbates a dilemma in design and construction; that often the designer may be unaware of certain details that are involved in fabricating and assembling building components. Research for Knowledge Base for Architectural Detailing (KBAD) proposes a system that takes advantage of current CAD software and programming language, bringing together the information provided by and important to the design team with the data required by the subcontractor to accurately produce architectural components, during the design phases of a project. The trade of architectural precast concrete is used to demonstrate the potential of such a system. Solid modeling, visual scripting, and programming language techniques working towards KBAD are described. Possible variations of architectural precast concrete panels, detailed with window openings, reveals, and embed plates, are presented.

summary Modern design of urban forms is venturing towards performative, site-specific architecture that are formed according to the attributes of its urban context. Parametric modelling techniques offer designers the ability to embed generative mechanisms into the design process to allow performance based design. This paper focuses on the development of a synthesis model that generates an Urban Form schema using computational design principles. The design system illustrates a rule-based systematic approach to urban form generation and is a precursor to the automatic exploration of urban forms based on design analytics and evaluation of urban metrics. The role of the architect begins to shift from the designer of objects to the designer of processes with urban planning following a trajectory of data-generated and contextual specific design.

summary Recent developments in Additive Manufacturing are creating possibilities to make not only rapid prototypes, but directly manufactured customised components. This paper investigates the potential for combining standard building materials with customised nodes that are individually optimised in response to local load conditions in non-standard, irregular, or doubly curved frame structures. This research iteration uses as a vehicle for investigation the SmartNodes Pavilion, a temporary structure with 3D printed nodes built for the 2015 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture in Hong Kong. The pavilion is the most recent staged output of the SmartNodes Project. It builds on the findings in earlier iterations by introducing topologically constrained node forms that marry the principals of the evolved optimised node shape with topological constraints imposed to meet the printing challenges. The 4m high canopy scale prototype structure in this early design research iteration represents the node forms using plastic Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM).

summary The emergence of media infused facades and new human computer interfaces have been of great interest in architecture in the recent decades. Most of the emerging examples are geared towards a multi-dimensional graphical output and most commonly stimulate our sense of sight. This paper explores recent developments in soft robotics and material sciences, developed at the Material Dynamics Lab at NJIT, that will allow the human computer interfaces to engage its users by captivating a multitude of senses simultaneously. Furthermore, this paper will contemplate future trajectories for the novel material strategies to improve human-computer or human-robot interaction, that one day may lead to truly robotic architectures.

summary In emerging countries there is a need for rapid urban planning, since they are confronted by unprecedented wave of urbanization. This need is even bigger since usually there is no adequate number of professional educated urban planners in these countries. Therefore, we investigate in this paper how to develop a set of methods that allow to generate urban fabric semi-automatically. The challenge is to come up with a generative planning model that adapts to multiple boundary conditions.Through a modular design strategy generative methods are applied by students in an urban design studio in order to combine them into more complex planning strategies for small cities in the emerging country of Ethiopia. The modular approach allows to break down planning into sub-issues to better deal with the overarching problem. For testing the implemented generative urban design strategies various cities are generated at different locations in Ethiopia with various topographic situations. Their underlying design strategies and modular approach are discussed in this paper.

summary Nowadays , we are able to produce geometric models of historical buildings at different scales of detail, using photos and measurements. This is true when you are observing something that is still under your eyes. We are faced more and more with lack of preservation actions and maintenance activities, policies framed without foresight, unexpected natural events, etc., that are forcing professionals and researchers to operate without usual data. In such cases, we need a consistent repository to collect and distribute data to produce information.Furthermore, we need to "give intelligence" to these repositories, in order to query them with respect to geometrical instances, topological issues, historical features, etc. This last aspect, (archives and databases connected with geometrical aspects), lead our digital model to a new dimension, the informative one (where spatial, temporal, historical and building parameters work together), that should always characterize speculative actions towards the constitution of a wealth of knowledge. We need to work on the efficiency of the process to reach effective methodologies of survey.

summary The presented process enables users to design, fabricate and assemble spatial lattices comprised of linear stock materials such as round section timber, aluminum or acrylic dowels and complex 3D printed joints. The motivation for the development of this application is informed by the incredible availability of low cost 3D printers which enable anyone to produce small scale artifacts; deploying rapid prototyping to achieve larger scale artifacts than the machine's effective work envelope is a challenge for additive manufacturing; and the trend in the design computing world away highly technical specialized software towards general public applications.

summary The aim of the paper is to identify parameters that influence perceived urban density. Whilst it is standard for architects and planners to consider urban density, there is often no consideration of how individuals might perceive such density. We report the findings of a study in which participants rate photographs of urban scenes according to perceived urban density. The case study area is central Zurich, Switzerland. The images are analyzed according to six parameters: visibility, amount of buildings, street width, amount of sky, amount of green space, and amount of vehicles. We report the findings of where images were ranked along a scale from lowest to highest perceived urban density. Findings show that visibility alone is not enough to explain the rating of perceived urban density. The study is a first step towards reaching a definition of perceived urban density that can be applied to different urban contexts.

summary Until today, on-site robotic construction processes in landscape architecture have been limited to predefined and controlled environments like road building or mining pits. We are presently developing an autonomous walking excavator that paves the way for new and advanced on-site design strategies. The shift towards robotic construction in terrain modeling and landscape architecture demands an adaptive design approach, where the resulting topology is inherently linked to landscape performance and the local conditions of a site. This paper discusses the computational design tools that may help redefine how design and construction processes can be better adapted to real-time topological and sensory data. This approach will, in due time, revolutionize how designers think, act and play with contemporary landscapes robotically, and reimagine their intrinsic relationship to infrastructure.

summary In continuation of our previous research (Hussein, et al., 2017), this paper examines the kinetic transformable spatial-bar structures that can alter their forms from any free-form geometry to another, which can be named as Free-form transformable structures (FFTS). Since 1994, some precedents have been proposed FFTS for many applications such as controlling solar gain, providing interactive kinetic forms, and control the users' movement within architectural/urban spaces. This research includes a comparative analysis and a critical review of eight FFTS precedents, which revealed some design and technical considerations, issues, and design and evaluation challenges due to the FFTS ability to deliver infinite unpredictable form variations. Additionally, this research presents our novel algorithmic framework to design and evaluate the infinite form variations of FFTS and an actuated prototype that achieved the required movement. The findings of this study revealed some significant design and technical challenges and limitations that require further research work.

summary The densification of urban spaces is a major challenge for future cities. With new forms of online consultation, we observe a movement towards open government in urban planning. A stronger participation between a more diverse body of players in a networked environment, is unveiling various discrepancies in the understanding of projects by the different actors in planning, due to access to and the comprehension of planning information. To recognise and utilise the associated capabilities of current transformations, communication between the actors in planning and their sharing of knowledge is vitally important. Information visualisation is an essential form of communication, prompting this explorative paper in considering elements specific to games visualisation and their implications for urban planning. Based on a framework for information visualisation in games it was found that the specifications for actor groups in planning processes mirror the specifications specific to target audience groups in games.

summary The imperative need for complex geometries in architecture is driving innovation towards an unconstrained fabrication freedom in building components. Fabrication constraints are a critical obstacle when material efficiency through complex, optimized topologies is sought. To address this constraint, this research investigates the use of 3D printed plastic formwork for fibre reinforced concrete at large scale. This novel construction method makes complex topologies and precise details possible for full-scale, load bearing structures. To demonstrate its potential applications, SkelETHon —a functional four-meter-long concrete canoe— was designed, built and raced in a regatta on the Rhine river (Figure 1).

summary Architecture is heading towards a future where data is collected, collated and presented in a dynamic platform. There is a potential for many standard processes in the industry to become automated, such as the site analysis process. Streamlining aspects of the design process allows architects to pay greater attention on creative design solutions for their buildings and less time engaging in complex, time consuming analytical programs. Urban Pinboard, a web-based GIS platform, promises to establish a bi-directional workflow between web data depositories and computational tools through the medium of a website. By doing so, the website allows users with minimal experience in computational processes to be engaged in the utilisation of these large datasets. Through the automation of these processes, relationships within the built environment industry can excel, leading towards performative driven designs.

Antoine Picon has argued that the use of ornament to communicate meaning and identity is returning to a place of cultural prominence. Well-established digital design and fabrication technologies have given rise to projects that integrate performance and aesthetics through the exploitation of form, pattern and ornament. These techniques allow the designer to inscribe and overlay data generated through performance simulation and environmental analysis, and formal relationships and fabrication processes onto materials and spatial fields, creating novel configurations and effects. Operating at a scale between object and building, public art, sculpture and architectural ornament allow for a particular type of interdisciplinary experimentation and hybrid practice. Three recent public art proposals illustrate an approach that composites multiple datasets to generate new relationships between aesthetic, environmental and functional considerations in order to activate public space. The proposals presented here put forward a set of tactics that can be deployed towards embedding overlapping data in public spaces. These proposals use pattern to form and form to pattern workflows as a way to produce multiple potential readings through pareidolia. This paper presents an investigation into how contemporary digital design and fabrication processes can bridge between performance and perception, and how ornament and pattern might be deployed for both formal and performative purposes to help foster a more personalized relationship with the urban spaces we occupy.

summary The paper presents results of a research conducted in 2015 and 2016 at Lodz University of Technology. It proposes a purpose and context fit approach towards the automation of urban data generation based on GIS tools and New Urbanism typologies. First, background studies of methods applied in urban morphology analysis are revealed. Form-Based Code planning, and subsequently Transect-Based Code are taken into account. Then, selected examples from literature are described and discussed. Finally, the research study is presented and the outcomes compared with more traditional methodology.

summary Designers or Non-Designers are not able to effectively access, view, search, discover, collect, reuse, remix and share parametric design data (PDD) for either professional or educational purposes. PDD here refers to the meta-data of 3D models generated by visual dataflow modelling software packages used in CAD/CAM industry. This ineffectiveness is a direct consequence of the deliberately proprietary nature of most PDD file formats and the restricted use within their respective desktop-based software environments. This paper presents an initial software prototype capable of automating the process of decoding a commonly used PDD file format and then re-encoding it with new set of metrics to facilitate multiple PDD searchability, comparability and interoperability, via an integrated web interface querying a design data repository. All PDDs are conceptualized as genealogies of numerical or geometric transformations and explicitly encoded with a graph-based data structure. The goal is to eventually learn from its own big data and begin to artificially generate novel PDDs heterogeneously.
