summary In the past, there has been a rapid evolution in computational tools to represent and analyze architectural designs. Analysis tools can be used in all stages of the design process, but they are often only used in the final stages, where it might be too late to impact the design. This is due to the considerable time and effort typically needed to produce the analytical models required by the analysis tools. A possible solution would be to convert the digital architectural models into analytical ones, but unfortunately, this often results in errors and frequently the analytical models need to be built almost from scratch. These issues discourage architects from doing a performance-oriented exploration of their designs in the early stages of a project. To overcome these issues, we propose Algorithmic Design and Analysis, a method for analysis that is based on adapting and extending an algorithmic-based design representation so that the modeling operations can generate the elements of the analytical model containing solely the information required by the analysis tool. Using this method, the same algorithm that produces the digital architectural model can also automatically generate analytical models for different types of analysis. Using the proposed method, there is no information loss and architects do not need additional work to perform the analysis. This encourages architects to explore several design alternatives while taking into account the design’s performance. Moreover, when architects know the set of design variations they wish to analyze beforehand, they can easily automate the analysis process.

summary The application of different software, whether simple or complex, can each play a significant role in the design and decision-making on daylighting for a building. This paper, discusses the task to be accomplished, in real case studies, and how various lighting software programs are used to achieve the desired information. The message iterated throughout the paper is one that respects, and even suggests, the use of even the simplest software, that can guide and inform design decisions in daylighting. Daylighting can be complex since the position of the sun varies throughout the day and year as well as do the sky conditions for a particular location. Just because we now have the computing capacity to model every single minute of a day throughout a year, doesn't justify its task. Several projects; an architecture studio, a university office building, a school library and a gymnasium all present different tasks to be achieved. The daylighting problems, the objects and the software application and their outcomes are presented in this paper. Over a decade of projects has led to reflecting upon the importance of computing in daylighting, its staged approach and the result that it can achieve if properly applied.

summary This paper describes an experience in a Graduate course Architecture and Urbanism that used computational tools to analyze urban quality – considering form, uses, density and spatial configuration (based on visual and fields) – in different urban areas in the city of João Pessoa. Understanding that the city is a problem in organized complexity, different aspects condition the quality of use of spaces and reveal urban dynamics. Urban analysis aided by computational tools revealed successful in characterizing different problems and potentialities that can lay the foundation for interventions with more urban quality.

summary This article reflects about creation, through the analysis of joints and furniture that are easily assembly and disassembly destined for young people in constant territorial displacement situations. Obtained by digital fabrication in the largest public network of free Fab Labs in the world, which is provided by the City Hall of São Paulo and the maker culture present in these units. Thus, are used, bibliographic and iconographic analysis and drawings for a better understanding of this furniture that had as reference for the analysis the following books: Nomadic Furniture volumes 1 and 2 written by Victor Papanek and James Hennessey.

summary Currently most professional modeling and computer graphics software packages embed a scripting language. This is an early report on collecting data about software applications and coding tools geared towards the educational environment, preparing a listing for further evaluation and analysis of platforms. An increase in the adoption of Python as the embedded scripting syntax in many established tools can already be recognized, therefore the creation of educational materials on Python for design and architectural education merits further attention. Other insights on the educational potential of the available tools might be gained by advancing the data collection and evaluation work.

summary Driven by technology, this multidisciplinary research focuses on the implementation of a photomechanical material into a reactive wearable that aims to protect the body from the ultraviolet radiation deriving from the sun. In this framework, the wearable becomes an active, supplemental skin that not only protects the human body but also augments its functions, such as movement and respiration. The embedded knowledge enables the smart material to sense and exchange data with the environment in order to passively actuate a system that regulates the relation between the body and its surroundings in an attempt to maintain equilibrium. The design strategy is defined by 4 sequential steps: a) The definition of the technical problem, b) the analysis of the human body, c) the design of the reactive material system, as well as d) the digital simulations and the digital fabrication of the system. The aforementioned design strategies allow for accuracy as well as high performance optimization and predictability in such complex design tasks, enabling the creation of customized products, designed for individuals.

summary This article discusses the methodology and results of the Maslow’s Palace workshops project, which engages with current debates surrounding the democratisation of digital urban design technology and stakeholder decision making, through the implementation of a speculative oriented approach to serious gaming. The research explores how serious games might be used to help marginalised communities consider past, future and present community experiences, reconcile dissimilar assumptions, generate social capital building and design responses and prime participants for further long-term design engagement processes through a new approach called Speculative Participatory Serious Urban Gaming. Empirical material for this research was gathered from a range of case study workshops prepared with three landfill-based communities and external partners throughout 2017. Results show the approach helped participants develop shared norms, values and collective understandings of sensitive topics and develop ideas for future action through ‘collective tinkering.

summary This article presents the level of adoption of BIM in Chile referring to recent studies carried out in the country, demonstrating that there has not been a significant increase in the use of this methodology by the industry. According to the analysis of international cases on educational frameworks, the authors argue that the development of a national education strategy for BIM with a focus on defining BIM capabilities required to assume the national mandate 2020, along with promoting collaborative work environments and active learning methodologies would be very beneficial.

summary To ensure access to sunlight in urban planning, specialized software is available. Mainly used in the initial stages, these tools allow the study of the environmental performance of the proposal. However, neighborhood impact is seen as a secondary aspect, usually evaluated with GIS tools, simulating pre-existing or proposed situations. However, visual programming tools allow, data processing in addition to parametric modeling, streamlining the process of analysis of architectural and urban pre-existences and proposals. From a case study, we present a methodology that uses these tools to demonstrate the loss of daylight performance of open spaces due to urban densification.

summary The Modern Heritage in Aracaju is still a little researched subject and the available works need to be reviewed and expanded. This paper presents the first results of a work dedicated to the analysis and registration of the Modern Heritage as a resilient action to the losses suffered, so that this heritage will resist in time and persist in the memory, enabling future research and conservation actions. The case study was the Hora Oliveira residence, which was modeled using Revit © from the development of a template, in which information about original materials and pathologies present in the building were inserted.

summary Modeling tools are evolving the process of architectural design from the use ordinary digital tool into a role of creator of complex shapes, through coding configurations. These procedures are becoming the structural ground of the architectural shape, going beyond their sole tools role. The increasing in importance of such codes implies a major level of awareness for their use, which is worth of a deeper analysis. The system of relations among parts in an architectural design picks a single configuration among infinite others, because it is produced by a design process which find its fulfillment in the final portray. Through the spreading of digital design tools, such final configuration becomes a step in a clearly reproducible process. The project is achieved through a series of starting conditions, which undergo a parametric process, that produces the final result. An identical parametric process can be applied under slightly different starting conditions and produce completely different results. These results are connected with the code which produced them, but is the authorship still property of the original author?

summary This study aims at identifying the determinant factors that form the condition of urbanity in urban space. A set of urbanistic attributes, based on sampled parcels of the urban network, is used for a quanti-qualitative analysis. Calculations based on these attributes are used to identify the indicators that express the performative qualities of the place, thus allowing the evaluation of the correlation between the typological characteristics of form and the qualitative expression of the urban space. This methodology points to the attributes of the urban form that are most strongly related to the concept of urbanity and that positively influence the quality of urban spaces in the Brazilian context. Finally, we compare our observation with those available in the European literature, already well established in these matters.

summary Self-supporting modular block systems of stone or masonry architecture are amongst ancient building techniques that survived unchanged for centuries. The control over geometry and structural performance of arches, domes and vaults continues to be exemplary and structural integrity is analysed through analogue and virtual simulation methods. With the advancement of computational tools and software development, finite and discrete element modeling have become efficient practices for analysing aspects for economy, tolerances and safety of stone masonry structures. This paper compares methods of structural simulation and analysis of an arch based on an interlocking wave joint assembly. As an extension of standard planar brick or stone modules, two specific geometry variations of catenary and sinusoidal curvature are investigated and simulated in a comparison of physical compression tests and finite element analysis methods. This is in order to test the stress performance and resilience provided by three-dimensional joints respectively through their capacity to resist vertical compression, as well as torsion and shear forces. The research reports on the threshold for maximum sinusoidal curvature evidenced by structural failure in physical modelling methods and finite element analysis.

summary The present paper surveys a method of changing the adequacy level of variables in multicriteria analysis (MCA) using parametric modeling. The aim is to simulate if-then scenarios to support resilience designs. The case study is a MCA for Pampulha region, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The parametric model was developed in Grasshopper software, and defines, by knowledge-driven, a set of weight for an increased environmental quality which generates an index of suitability for each territorial unit. The if-then simulation changes the level of adequacy of 3 variables using a genetic algorithm, which calculates new distribution patterns for the MCA adequacy level.

summary The aim of this paper is to expose the preliminary results of a research about local landscape perception for students in a rural school. The proposed methodology implies an analysis and elaboration of landscape maps, regarding the use of new technologies in order to understand them. This work was done through remote visualization tools to determinate landscape parameters and other necessary inputs to evaluate the incidence of digital tools on students perception. Digital photographs, drone flights and interactive platforms are also applied as innovative tools to navigate and understand landscape from different scales and approaches.

summary The general objective of the research is to contribute to the critical conceptualization of experimental architectural practices in the context of the production suggested by Digital Materiality from a global perspective. summary This paper reports the results of a protocol study which explores behavior of designers while they design in pairs using sketching (analogue and remote) and 3D modeling tools (co-located and remote) in co-located and remote locations. The design protocol videos were collected, transcribed, segmented and coded with the customized coding scheme. The coded protocol data was examined to understand the changes of designers’ co-design process and their activities of making representation in four different settings. This paper discusses the impact of location and types of representation on collaborative design. The paper concludes that designers were able to adapt their collaboration and design strategies in accordance with the affordability of the used digital environments.
