summary Please write your aToday, in a moment when digital technologies are taking command of many architectural design and construction processes, it is important to examine the place and role of traditional ones. Designed by Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura in collaboration with Cecil Balmond, the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2005 reflects the potential of combining those two different approaches in the production of innovative buildings. For inquiring this argument, this paper investigates the development of this project from its conception to construction with a double goal: to uncover the relationship between analogical and digital processes, and to understand the architects' role in a geographically distributed workflow, which involved the use of computational design and robotic fabrication technologies. To support this examination, the authors designed and fabricated a 1:3 scale prototype of part of the Pavilion, which also served to check and reflect on the technological evolution since then, which is setting different conditions for design development and collaboration.bstract here by clicking this paragraph.

summary Virtual reality provides a heightened sense of immersion and spatial awareness that provides a unique opportunity for designers to perceive and evaluate scale and space. At the same time, traditional sketches and small-size physical models provide tactile feedback that allow designers to create, comprehend, and explore complex geometric relationships. Through the development of vSpline, a modeling application for virtual reality, we explore the potential for design within a virtual spatial environment to blur the boundaries between digital and physical stages of design, and seek to combine the best of both virtual and analog worlds. By using spline-based closed meshes created directly in three-dimensional space, our software provides the capabilities to design, modify, and save the information in the virtual world and seamlessly convert the data to evaluate the printing of 3D physical models. We identify and discuss important questions that arise regarding relationships of perception of scale, digital-to-physical domains, and new methods of input and manipulation within a 3D immersive space.

summary In this article, we present crowdsourcing as a design delivery method for publicly funded buildings, and compare it to the traditional Request for Proposals (RFP). We explore the potential of crowdsourcing through the use of an online design competition for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, IL, which the authors administered at Arcbazar.com, a crowdsourcing platform. Competition procedures have been applied in architectural practice since antiquity, from the Parthenon and the Hagia Sophia to thousands of seminal buildings around the globe. However, with the advent of digital technologies and outreach to a more interconnected world, crowdsourcing allows even the most mundane design challenges to go through the fair competition protocol. We argue that crowdsourcing can help democratize architectural design acquisition by giving a level playing field to designers, and produce a more just, competitive, and creative design product.

summary The advent of BIM in the AECO industry brings with it profound transformations in the design process. These changes are necessary to meet the requirements of the current project market and make the traditional design process into an integrated design process. Although the advantages obtained from this practice, new job functions and standardization of communication must be embraced to ensure its success. This work presents the conception of the integrated project in BIM with its practices related to the PDP and identifies the evolution of the norms of aid to the realization of projects in BIM in Brazil.

summary In the last few years, building renovation has gained an unprecedented relevance in Portugal, yet it is an asymmetric and urban phenomenon for the study of which, in space and in time, traditional statistic tools have limitations. Using computational tools, it is possible to generate maps that correlate building permits georeferenced data and their processing time. Using Lisbon City Hall database of planning applications and georeferenced vector information, two approaches are developed to represent the internal dynamic of renewal of the city between 2010 and 2016. These maps can be useful to improve the accessibility of planning information to citizens.

summary This paper describes the development of a structure named Tentacles, belonging to the “Tele-biosphere” a wider project that explores the communication between hybrid systems that are both natural and artificial. Tentacles uncharted geometry is alive in many senses introducing structural difficulties inexistent in traditional beam and column framework. The initial form required structural expertise that the authors formally don’t possess, together with cost and manufacture constrains. To overcome these difficulties, a strategy based on the analogy with vertebrate species was developed, using discs, vertebrae, spine, tendons and tentacles. Authors argue that to solve this problem it was necessary to regain material intuition, combining computation with analogic thinking.

summary This paper focus on the development and evaluation of a computer tool that enriches physical scale models of buildings, which are commonly used during architecture and civil engineering design processes. The main goal of this work is to enable designers, namely architects, to use the affordances of the physical scale models, by enhancing them with digital characteristics that can be easily changed, allowing an enriched interaction of the designer with such models. Our in-house developed Augmented Reality tool, referred to as ARch4models, augments the user experience with visual features and interactive capabilities, not possible to accomplish with physical models (see this video in https://goo.gl/5zbdTQ). The tool allows the coherent registration between the real and the digital in the same space. Satisfaction evaluation studies were conducted that have shown that ARch4models improves the building design process when compared with a traditional methodology employing solely physical scale models.

summary Recent developments in digital design and fabrication tools have led architects and researchers to renew the interest in stereotomy. This interest converges with a growing ecological and economical conscience that matches classic stereotomy raw material needs: compression resistance materials. However, material resources or prefabrication time are still major counterparts for the adoption of this construction system. This paper focuses in exploring techniques that profit from the interdependency between built form and fabrication technique, foraging methodologies that allow for stereotomic block creation with simpler resources. The premise is to explore faster, cheaper, more accessible ways to build stereotomic structures. The technique developed in this research explores alternatives to the traditional cutting of stone by expanding techniques for variable moulds to form solid voussoirs.

summary This project intends to introduce the maker culture into traditional education. The goal is to make technology teaching available in elementary education in a fast, cheap and egalitarian way, seeking to democratize its access and use it to integrate maker culture's principles into traditional school. For that several existing makerspaces and fab labs programs’ were studied to identify the core activities and equipments to support this proposal. Its contribution is an adaptable modular system with a demountable construction platform to foster customized spaces. The system is manufactured to enable the expansion and retraction of the structure allowing its future reuse.

summary The paper discusses 23 interviewed architects in practice about the role of traditional and digital sketching (human-computer interaction) in communication with the client. They were selected from 1995 to 2018 (the interval of graduation) from three different countries: the Czech Republic (CR), Slovakia (SR), Netherland (NR). To realize three blending areas that impact the approach to sketching: (I) Traditional hand and physical model studies (1995-2003). (II)Transition form - designing by hand and PC (2004–2017). (III) Mainly digital and remote forms of designing (2018–now). Interviews helped transform 31 “parameters of tools use” from the previous theoretical framework narrowed down into six main areas: (1) Implementation; (2)Affordability; (3)Timesaving; (4) Drawing support; (5) Representativeness; (6) Transportability. Paper discusses findings from interviewees: (A) Implementation issues are above time and price. (B) Strongly different understanding of what digital sketching is. From drawing in Google Slides by mouse to sketching in Metaverse. (C) Substantial reduction of traditional sketching (down to a total of 3% of the time) at the expense of growing responsibilities. (D) 80% of respondents do not recommend sketching in front of the client. Also, other interesting findings are further described in the discussion.

summary We present a proof of concept of parametric 3D models of fully associative geometry and milling tool paths for the robotic machining of traditional timber joints, using a visual robot-programming environment integrated into a popular CAD software. A representative sample of traditional timber joints was obtained from a field survey conducted in Valparaíso, Chile. Each specimen was theoretically validated in nearly half a hundred carpentry treatises and manuals corresponding to the historical period in which the surveyed buildings were built. Parametric robotic milling prototypes were experimentally validated in manufacturing process using two industrial robots with different spindles and cutting tools.

summary The development and the innovation of tools, techniques and digital applications represent a challenge for those who are in charge of architectural education to keep up with this development. This is because these techniques provide potentials that are not available in the traditional method of teaching. This raises an important question: can these tools and techniques help to achieve the targeted outcomes of education? This research paper discusses how to integrate both digital 3D models, of CAAD, and interactive applications for the development of architectural education curriculum. To test this, a case study has been conducted on the subject of building construction, for the second year at the faculty of engineering, specifically, the bearing walls construction system. In addition, this study has been divided into three parts. Through the first part, the scientific content of the curriculum, which tackles the bearing walls, has been prepared. The second part shows how to convert the scientific content into an interactive content in which the students learn through the experiment and the simulation of the traditional construction methods as the students a acquire construction skills and the ability to imagine different structural complexities. The third part includes the creation of both the application and the software containing the interactive curriculum. Workshop for the students has been held as a case study to test the effectiveness of this development and to recognize the pros and cons. The results confirmed the importance of integrating this applications into architectural education.

summary With the use of the concept Central Activities Zone in the Shanghai City Master Plan (2017-2035) to replace the traditional concept of Central Business District, core areas such as Shanghai Lujiazui will be given more connotations in the future construction and development. In the context of todays continuous urbanization and high-speed capital flow, how to identify the development status and vitality characteristics is a prerequisite for creating a high-quality Central Activities Zone. Taking Shanghai Lujiazui sub-district etc. as an example, the vitality value of weekday and weekend as well as 19 indexes including density of functional facilities and building morphology is quantified by obtaining multi-source big data. Meanwhile, the correlation between various indexes and the vitality characteristics of the Central Activities Zone are tried to summarize in this paper. Finally, a neural network regression model is built to bridge the design scheme and vitality values to realize the prediction of the vitality of the Central Activities Zone. The data analysis method proposed in this paper is versatile and efficient, and can be well integrated into the urban big data platform and the City Information Modeling, and provides reliable reference suggestions for the real-time evaluation of future urban construction.

summary Abstract: This paper searches for an alternative design method of integrating traditional material craft and computational design. It begins by analyzing Chinese philosophical view of nature, and proposes a natural design built method. The paper demonstrates the idea with two bamboo structure projects. In China, bamboo is closely linked to culture values and traditional craftsmanship. The projects research on the formation logic of bamboo system, and employs computational design method to activate the system formation. The projects strive to investigate computational design with unique eastern characteristics, to find out how it can help to reinvent its traditional values, and to search for a unification of formation logic and material sensibility.

summary Reviewing the current research trends in robotic fabrication around the world, the trajectory promises new opportunities for innovation in Architecture and the possible redefinition of the role of the Architect in the industry itself. New entrepreneurial, innovative start-ups are popping up everywhere challenging the traditional model of the architect. However, it also poses new questions and challenges in the education of the architect today. What are the appropriate pedagogical methods to instill enthusiasm for new technologies, materials, and craft? How do we avoid the pure application of pre-set tools, such as the use of the laser cutter has become, which in many schools around the world has caused problems rather than solving problems? How do we teach students to invent their tools especially in a society that doesn't have a strong background in the making? The primary focus of this paper is on how architectural CAAD/ CAM education through the use of robotic fabrication can enhance student's understanding, passion and knowledge of materiality, technology, and craftsmanship. The paper is based on the pedagogical set-up and method of an M. Arch I studio that was taught by the author in fall 2016 with the focus on robotic fabrication, materiality, traditional timber construction systems, tool design and digital and physical craftsmanship.

summary New possibilities of concrete constructions in architecture, the traditional formwork can be gradually replaced by the use of flexible textile. At the same time textile reinforcement combined with fabric formwork, introduces an innovative integrated solution in the fabrication of concrete. Based on a simple understanding of the textile weaving and knitting techniques, this project concentrates on the architectural production and the structural optimization of the textile as both concrete reinforcement and formwork. Furthermore, we present a robotic simulation of the process that develops using a series of computational experiments to research the sequence of weaving and/or knitting. Through the computational process and the design simulations, the research is firmly rooted in analog and digital exploration of material and its implementation in architecture, with particular emphasis on the convergence of robotics and computation. Note that the paper deals mainly with the software and weaving simulation as part of a larger research project, without dealing with the production of physical artefacts.

summary This paper proposes virtual spaces designed in Game Engines promote a form of inhabitant hyperactivity. Allowing quick navigation between distant spaces the Game Engine fosters an appreciation of movement over pause, which may be to the detriment of architectural visualisation. Based on the examination of these case studies, the paper concludes on a motion that breaking down the inherent 'stillness' of traditional RTVE's can be avoided by developing an environment that taps into data streaming and monitoring services to enhance the inhabitant experience.

summary Built on a Situated Computations framework, this project explores preservation, reconfiguration, and presentation of heritage through immersive virtual experiences, and machine learning for new understandings and possibilities (Noel 2020; 2017; Leach and Campo 2022; Leach 2021). Using the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival - hereinafter referred to as Carnival - as a case study, Carnival + AI is a series of immersive experiences in design, culture, and artificial intelligence (AI). These virtual spaces create new digital modes of engaging with cultural heritage and reimagined designs of traditional sculptures in the Carnival (Noel 2021). The project includes three virtual events that draw on real events in the Carnival: (1) the Virtual Gallery, which builds on dancing sculptures in the Carnival and showcases AI-generated designs; (2) Virtual J’ouvert built on J’ouvert in Carnival with AI-generated J’ouvert characters specific; and (3) Virtual Mas which builds on the masquerade.

summary Since the advent of industrialized processes in modern construction industries, the development of and relationship between computer-aided tools of design and computer-controlled tools of fabrication has steadily yielded new and innovative construction methodologies. Whilst industry has adopted many of these innovations for use by highly efficient machines and flexible processes, their operation is often highly dependent on industrial scales of production, and thus often inaccessible for small-scale, bespoke and affordable application. The prototype integrated joint milling methodology, case study and open-source software plugin ‘Dove’ presented in this paper, explores the efficacy of algorithmic processes in dynamically generating complex tooling paths and machine code for fabrication of bespoke dovetail and finger joints on a 6-axis industrial robot. The versatility, speed and precision of 6-axis robotic milling, allows us to liberate the efficiency, integrity and aesthetic of the dovetail and finger joint types from traditional application, and apply them to new architectures involving mass-customisation, complex form, and diverse materialities. In the development of full-immersion milling toolpaths and back-face filleting techniques that drastically reduce cutting times, tool path complexity and material waste, this study seeks to build upon past and current research by proposing a comparatively simple, efficient and more intuitive approach to robotically-fabricated integrated jointing for application at a variety of scales.
