summary A new method is proposed to improve diminished reality (DR) simulations to allow the demolition and removal of entire buildings in large-scale spaces. Our research goal was to obtain optical integrity by using a scientific and reliable simulation approach. Further, we tackled presumption of the texture of the background sky by applying deep learning. Our approach extracted the background sky using information from the actual sky obtained from a photographed image. This method comprised two steps: (1) detection of the sky area from the image through image segmentation and (2) creation of an image of the sky through image inpainting. The deep convolutional neural networks developed by us to train and predict images were evaluated to be feasible and effective.

summary This project applies techniques in machine learning, specifically generative adversarial networks (or GANs), to produce synthetic images intended to capture the predominant visual properties of urban places. We propose that imaging cities in this manner represents the first computational approach to documenting the Genius Loci of a city (Norberg-Schulz, 1980), which is understood to include those forms, textures, colors, and qualities of light that exemplify a particular urban location and that set it apart from similar places. Presented here are methods for the collection of urban image data, for the necessary processing and formatting of this data, and for the training of two known computational statistical models (StyleGAN (Karras et al., 2018) and Pix2Pix (Isola et al., 2016)) that identify visual patterns distinct to a given site and that reproduce these patterns to generate new images. These methods have been applied to image nine distinct urban contexts across six cities in the US and Europe, the results of which are presented here. While the product of this work is not a tool for the design of cities or building forms, but rather a method for the synthetic imaging of existing places, we nevertheless seek to situate the work in terms of computer-assisted design (CAD). In this regard, the project is demonstrative of a new approach to CAD tools. In contrast with existing tools that seek to capture the explicit intention of their user (Aish, Glynn, Sheil 2017), in applying computational statistical methods to the production of images that speak to the implicit qualities that constitute a place, this project demonstrates the unique advantages offered by such methods in capturing and expressing the tacit.

summary Urban vegetation has been used to tackle architectural and urban problems by reducing urban heat islands and improving the quality of urban landscapes and biodiversity. The green view index provides end users with a metric to intuitively understand the vegetation scenarios. This study integrates a green view index estimation method and augmented reality (AR) and diminished reality (DR) scenes of future architectural and urban design simulations. We developed the AR/DR system "PhotoAR+DR2016 (photogrammetry-based augmented and diminished reality)" that simultaneously measures the green view index and simulates building, urban, and planting designs with addition, demolition, and removal of the objects such as structures. The developed system enables real-time measurement of the green view index by appropriately reducing the image size and extracting the green area. Using the developed prototype system, the on-site verification can be conducted; in addition, the processing speed and the accuracy and inaccuracy rates can be measured, and the green view index can be sufficiently measured in real time.

summary The hi-resolution imaging of public urban space for both promotional and surveillance purposes is now undertaken by a range of ubiquitous visioning technology such as Internet webcams, drones (UAV's) and high-altitude aircraft cameras. The ability to control and manipulate these types of images is a growing concern in an increasingly 'envisioned' environment. One approach is to disrupt or modify the 'emission signatures' of urban surfaces, which requires an understanding of the digital algorithms used to assemble and transmit image content into grids of visual data. Recent scaled tests show that Fraunhofer diffraction algorithms can interfere with the smooth transmission of image data. When these algorithmic patterns are physically constructed into a building façade, they create natural disruption glitches in the camera's successful transmission of visual data. The paper details how the quantum of visual aberration in the digital portrayal of the city can be determined by algorithm-based façade patterning.

summary Patterns in nature, either the cells forming the skins of living organisms or the sand forming the dunes, are in a constant change. Given that, pattern cannot only be seen as an absolute image of a whole formed by units, but it can also be seen as a process, which is controlled by stimuli affecting the outcome both visually and functionally in the architectural context. In this paper, the changes on the bodies of color and form changing living organisms are implemented to the building envelope as a dynamic process of adapting to the environment in terms of interaction. The bio-system is implemented to the envelope in terms of morphological, functional, and behavioral properties of particular living organisms. The proposed model is discussed in terms of adapting its environment by sensing and responding.

summary This paper presents design research speculating on new planning approaches for informal urban sites that enables coordinated planning to operate within the realm of spontaneous, bottom-up redevelopment. In opposition to the /tabula rasa/ Modernist development, this project reacts to the dynamic metabolism of the village and engages with the rapid turnover of the built environment of the village as a mechanism through which to implement incremental redevelopment. A radical reorientation of the object of masterplanning, this replaces the singular image or document as the guiding authority with a collection of opportunistic adaptations, temporal sequences, and localized procedures. Enabling this approach is a computational approach that analyzes the morphology of the public space network to identify opportunities to address issues in the composition of the village. A multiagent system driven by weighted random walks through the circulation network conducts local analyses of the urban fabric while changes are made and proposes potential modifications to discrete areas. The model simulates the potential for such a planning tool to be used over a long time span and updated with empirically gathered data, having the benefit of flexibility and resilience in the face of the changing and unregulated conditions in the context of informal urbanism.

summary Simple and common architectural elements can be combined to create complex spaces. Different spatial compositions of elements define different spatial boundaries, and each produces a unique local spatial experience to observers inside the space. Therefore an architectural style brings about a distinct spatial experience. While multiple representation methods are practiced in the field of architecture, there lacks a compelling way to capture and identify spatial experiences. Describing an observer’s spatial experiences quantitatively and efficiently is a challenge. In this paper, we propose a method that employs 3D isovist methods and a convolutional neural network (CNN) to achieve recognition of local spatial compositions. The case studies conducted validate that this methodology works well in capturing and identifying local spatial conditions, illustrates the pattern and frequency of their appearance in designs, and indicates peculiar spatial experiences embedded in an architectural style. The case study used small designs by Mies van der Rohe and Aldo van Eyck. The contribution of this paper is threefold. First, it introduces a sampling method based on 3D Isovist that generates a 2D image that can be used to represent a 3D space from a specific observation point. Second, it employs a CNN model to extract features from the sampled images, then classifies their corresponding space. Third, it demonstrates a few case studies where this space classification method is applied to different architectural styles.

summary The fields of architecture and urban planning widely apply spatial analysis based on images. However, many features can influence the spatial conditions, not all of which can be explicitly defined. In this research, we propose a new deep learning framework for extracting spatial features without explicitly specifying them and use these features for spatial analysis and prediction. As a first step, we establish a deep convolution neural network (DCNN) learning problem with omnidirectional images that include depth images as well as ordinary RGB images. We then use these images as explanatory variables in a game engine to predict a subjects' preference regarding a virtual urban space. DCNNs learn the relationship between the evaluation result and the omnidirectional camera images and we confirm the prediction accuracy of the verification data.

summary Valuable cultural heritage may be permanently damaged as a consequence of different man-made influences, as well as natural erosion. In cases where no documentation is available about the original shape, an analysis of the typological group of similar objects is commonly used as a base for reconstruction. The interpretation of typology can be based on explicit method relied on relevant shape data.The aim of this paper is to propose a method which may be used in the virtual reconstruction of the damaged sculpture of St John Nepomuk in Petrovaradin, Serbia. Virtual reconstruction presented in this paper was based on parametric analysis of the typological group. The spatial characteristics of the sculptures were transformed into measurable parameters which were further used to determine the missing shape such that the reconstruction has the highest probability of representing the true shape of the damaged sculpture based on attributes the same typographical group. We propose three different ways based on how the most likely shape of the missing part may be computed: i) the reconstruction in which average values for each parameter are used; ii) the reconstruction in which average values are used for numerical parameters while spatial parameters were selected from the sculpture with the highest probability for these parameters; iii) the reconstruction in which all of the characteristics are inherited from one real sculpture, closest to the average shape.

summary Unprecedented growth of hybrid settlements causes deterioration to the indoor environmental quality. Due to their narrow street-networks and fully packed urban fabric, lower floors are subjected to severe overshadow condition, which has adverse effects on the health of the inhabitants. This paper aims to investigate techniques to mitigate the under-lit indoor environment for a group of buildings with variable heights and orientations, with regard to the urban façades parameters. It reflects an intervention in an existing hybrid settlements, within hot-desert climate, to alter façades configurations for daylight optimization, and ultimately recover the lost indoor quality of users in such contexts.

summary This paper presents the initial developments of a method to train an adaptive robotic system for subtractive manufacturing with timber, based on sensor feedback, machine-learning procedures and material explorations. The methods were evaluated in a series of tests where the trained networks were successfully used to predict fabrication parameters for simple cutting operations with chisels and gouges. The results suggest potential benefits for non-standard fabrication methods and a more effective use of material affordances.

summary The digital fabrication of monolithic shell structures is presenting some challenges related to the interface between computational design and fabrication techniques, such as the methods chosen for the suitable parametrization of the geometry based on materiality characteristics and construction constrains, the digital optimization criteria of variables, and the translation of the relevant code used for digital fabrication. Specifically, the translation from the digital to the physical when a definite materiality appears during the digital fabrication process proves to be a crucial step, which is typically approached as a linear and predetermined sequence. This often-difficult step offers the potential of embedding a certain level of interactivity between the fabricator and the materialized model during the fabrication process in order to allow for real time adjustments or corrections. This paper features monolithic shell construction processes that promote a simple interface of live interaction between the fabricator and the tool control during the digital fabrication process. The implementation of novel digital and physical methods will be explored, offering the possibility of being combined with automated fabrication actions controlled by real time inputs with virtual reality [VR] influenced by 3d scanning and 3d CAD programs, and the possibility of incorporating augmented reality [AR].

summary This research presents results of visual modeling strategies introduction, associated with spatial ideas, being all referred to the work done in the Architectural Design Studio 1-2 at the University of Chile. The applied project methodology seeks to lay the foundations of an incremental draft strategy, which allows a smooth transition between the analog conceptual stages to a digital inclusion of similar criteria of visual modeling in early stages of architectural design. That methodology allows to students to decode their concepts to digital shapes, using point, lines, and triangles as analog-digital translators for each proposal.

summary Form-Based Codes are legal regulations adopted by local government that allow specific urban forms to be achieved. Such codes have a significant impact on the performative potential of the urban environment. This paper explores the possibility of using a neuroevolution algorithm to elucidate the complex relationship between Form-based Codes and their performative potential. More specifically, Compositional Pattern Producing Networks (CPPN) are used to generate parameter fields, which then drive the generation of varied urban models. For evolving the CPPN networks, a neuroevolution algorithm is used, called Neuroevolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT). In order to test the feasibility of the proposed approach, an abstract experiment is described in which a population of urban models are evolved, optimising a set of performance criteria related to the vista and location of the residential units.

title Angiogenesis as a model for the generation of load-bearing networks

summary This research suggests an algorithm to generate structural networks based on discreet elements for given locations of support points and point loads. Previous research attempted to achieve this by using a computational growth simulation of venation systems, which form the structure of leaves. However, such networks always start from a single point and therefore cannot be used to form arches or beams. In order to generate networks that are based on two or three support points, an algorithm has been developed that is inspired instead by angiogenesis, the process by which vascular systems develop. The algorithm is based on a spring system with a variable network graph that connects the support points and is pulled upwards and split sideways into multiple veins by a given set of load points. The algorithm has been used to grow architectural structures. Different networks have been tested using finite element analysis and compared with both venation and column-and-beam structures. The angiogenesis networks as well as the venation network are shown to perform well and may be suitable as architectural structural systems.

summary In this paper, we present a method for generating fast conceptual urban design prototypes. We synthesize spatial configurations for street networks, parcels and building volumes. Therefore, we address the problem of implementing custom data structures for these configurations and how the generation process can be controlled and parameterized. We exemplify our method by the development of new components for Grasshopper/Rhino3D and their application in the scope of selected case studies. By means of these components, we show use case applications of the synthesis algorithms. In the conclusion, we reflect on the advantages of being able to generate fast urban design prototypes, but we also discuss the disadvantages of the concept and the usage of Grasshopper as a user interface.

summary Physarum Polycephalum is a widespread eukaryotic microbe capable of producing effective networks between food particles to solve spatial planning problems. This paper investigates a previous algorithm for simulating Physarum Polycephalum. An open-source tool named Physarealm is developed for simulation in Rhino's graphical algorithm editor, Grasshopper. The tool adopts a previous stigmergic multi-agent algorithm for simulation and expands its boundary into three dimensions. In addition, this tool adds some custom rules, thus giving the designer more creative control over the produced results. Two research projects have applied this tool in the design process. The first project mainly takes advantage of the tool's path-planning ability, while the second one utilizes its aesthetic values, demonstrating the potential of the tool for further applications.

summary The advent of artificial intelligence, specifically neural networks, has marked a significant turning point in the field of computation. During such transformative times, we are often faced with a dearth of appropriate vocabulary, which forces us to rely on existing terms, regardless of their inadequacy. This paper argues that the term “interpolation,” typically used in deep learning (DL), is a prime example of this phenomenon. It is not uncommon for beginners to misunderstand its meaning, as DL pioneer Francois Chollet (2017) has noted. This misreading is especially true in the discipline of architecture, and this study aims to demonstrate how the meaning of “interpolation” has evolved in the second digital turn. We begin by illustrating, using 2D data, the difference between linear interpolation in the context of topological figures and its use in DL algorithms. We then demonstrate how 3DGANs can be employed to interpolate across different topologies in complex 3D space, highlighting the distinction between linear and manifold interpolation. In both 2D and 3D examples, our results indicate that the process does not involve continuous morphing but instead resembles the piecing together of a jigsaw puzzle to form many parts of a larger ambient space. Our study reveals how previous architectural research on DL has employed the term “interpolation” without clarifying the crucial differences from its use in the first digital turn. We demonstrate the new possibilities that manifold interpolation offers for architecture, which extend well beyond parametric variations of the same topology.

summary This paper is concerned with the translation of analogue qualities of human emotions into digital readings. Human body postures are considered as one of the main behavioral conduits for non-verbal communication and emotional expressions (Shan et.al., 2007). This research is the first step towards identifying and detecting emotions through posture analysis of users moving through space; leading towards generating real time responses in the form of spatial configurations to users' emotions. Such spatial configurations would then help inhabitants reach certain emotional states that would enhance their life quality. In order to achieve this goal, we propose a methodology for developing a comprehensive shape grammar algorithm that could evaluate and predict bodily expressions of emotions. The importance of this study lies under the embodied interactions (Streech et.al., 2011) in space. As the circumfixed space impacts the embodied mind, the body impacts its surrounding including the architectural space.
