summary A city, defined as a unity of inhabitants with their environment and showing self-creating and self-maintaining properties, can be considered as an autopoietic system if we take into account its bottom-up processes with unpredictable behaviour of its components. Such a property can lead to self-creation of urban patterns. These processes are studied in well-known vernacular architectures and informal settlements around the world and they are able to adapt according to various conditions and forces. The main research objective is to establish a computational design-modelling framework for modelling autopoietic intricate characteristics of a city based on an adaptability, self-maintenance and self-generation of urban patterns with adequate visual representation.The paper introduces a modelling methodology that allows to combine planning tasks with inhabitants' interaction and data sources by using an interchange framework to model more complex urban dynamics. The research yields preliminary results tested in a simulation model of a redevelopment of Tanjong Pagar Waterfront, the container terminal in the city of Singapore being transformed into a new future centre as a conducted case study.

summary When working with parametric models, architects typically focus on using rather structuring them (Woodbury, 2010). As a result, increasing design complexity typically means a convoluted parametric model, amplifying known problems: 'hard to understand, modify, share and reuse' (Smith 2007; Davis 2011). This practice is in contrast with conventional software-programming where programmers are known to meticulously document and structure their code with versioning tool. In this paper, we argue that versioning tools could help to manage parametric modelling complexity, as it has been showing with software counterparts. Four key features of version control: committing, differentiating, branching, and merging, and how they could be implemented in a parametric design practice are discussed. Initial user test sessions with 5 student designers using GHShot Grasshopper version control plugin (Cristie and Joyce 2018, 2017) revealed that the plugin is useful to record and overview design progression, share model, and provide a fallback mechanism.

summary This paper presents a continuation of research on the prototyping of multi-agent systems for architectural design with a focus on generative design as a means to improve design exploration in the context of multiple objectives and complexity. The interactive design framework focuses on coupling force, environmental constraints and fabrication parameters as design drivers for the form finding of shell structures. The objective of the research is to enable designers to intuitively generate free form shells structures that are conditioned by multiple objectives for architectural exploration in early stages of design. The generated geometries are explored through reciprocal frames, and are evaluated in an automated fashion both on local and global levels in terms of their structural and environmental performance and constructability. The analytical results along with fabrication constraints are fed back into the generative design process in order to more rapidly and expansively design explore across complexly coupled objectives. The paper describes the framework and presents the application of this methodology for the design of fabrication aware shell structures in which environmental and structural trade offs drive the final set of design options.

summary Additive manufacturing techniques and materials have evolved rapidly during the last decade. Applications in architecture, engineering and construction are getting more attention as 3D printing is trying to find its place in the industry. Due to high material prices for metal 3d printing and in-homogenous material behaviour in printed plastic, 3D printing has not yet had a very significant impact at the scale of buildings. Limitations on scale, cost, and structural performance have also hindered the advancement of the technology and research up to this point. The research presented here takes a case study for the application of 3D printing at a furniture scale based on a novel custom optimisation approach for structural nodes. Through the concentration of non-standard geometry on the highly complex custom optimised nodes, 3D printers at industrial product scale could be used for the additive manufacture of the structural nodes. This research presents a design strategy with a digital process chain using parametric modeling, virtual prototyping, structural simulation, custom optimisation and additive CAD/CAM for a digital workflow from design to production. Consequently, the digital process chain for the development of structural nodes was closed in a holistic manner at a suitable scale.

summary BIM modelling systems and graph-based modelling systems have been widely used in the architecture design process recently. Based on the systems, an alternative approach to study the influence of perforated façade panels on the indoor illuminance by using a parametric performance analysis in a practical architectural project is proposed. The workflow we developed makes the modelling process faster, more accurate, and easier to modify. From the circulation of modelling-to-analysis process, the performance can be compared, feedback can be generated. Accordingly, optimized design can be concluded. This study suggests an analysis method to evaluate the indoor illuminance performance in the early design stages. The simulation is not a conventional typical in-depth one, but a practical method to immediately evaluate the performance for each design alternative and provide guidelines for design modification. Moreover, the first generation of digital modeling programs allow designers to conceive new forms, and allow these forms to be controled and realized. It reacts to the conference theme by presenting a protocol for a digital workflow in the early stage of the design development.

summary This paper presents a design framework for free-form transformation of kinetic, spatial bar structures using computational design techniques. Spatial bar structures considered as deployable, transformable kinetic structures composed of straight, linear members, assembled in a three-dimensional configuration. They are often utilised in portable, mobile or transformable buildings. Transformable systems of spatial bar structures are mostly based on modification of primitive shapes (e.g. box, sphere, and cylinder). Each system is subdivided into multiple members having the same shape, the so-called kinetic blocks. Some diverse precedents made to develop other forms of transformation of these structures with some issues. This research project will investigate how a free-form transformation of spatial bar systems can be achieved, by redesigning the kinetic block in relation to architectural, technical parameters. In order to develop a physical prototype of the kinetic block, and assess its potential in enabling free-form transformation of a spatial bar system, a design framework incorporating parametric, algorithmic and kinetic design strategies is required. The proposed design workflow consists of three main phases: form-finding, stability validation and actuation.

summary Most recent developments in the design of free form shells pursue new approaches in digital fabrication based on material properties and construction-aware design. In this research we proposed an alternative approach based on implementation of expanded polystyrene (EPS), a non-standard material for shells, in the process of industrial robot fabrication that enables fast and precise cutting of building elements. Main motivation for using EPS as a building material was driven by numerous advantages when compared to commonly used materials such as: recycleability, cost-efficiency, high earthquake resistance, durability and short assembly time. We describe case specific fabrication approach based on numerous production constraints (size of the panels, limited robot workspace, in situ conditions) that directly design the process.

summary Parametric associative logic can describe complex design scenarios but are typically non-trivial and time consuming to develop. Optimization is being widely applied in many fields to find high-performing solutions to objective design needs, and this is being extended further to include user input to satisfy subjective preferences. However, whilst conventional optimization approaches can set good parameters for a model, they cannot currently improve the underlying logic defined by the associative topology of the model, leaving it limited to predefined domain of designs. This work looks at the application of Cartesian Genetic Programming (CGP) as a method for allowing the automatic generation, combination and modification of valid parametric models, including topology. This has value as it allows for a much greater range of solutions, and potentially computational "creativity," as it can develop unique and surprising solutions. However, the application of a genome-based definition and evolutionary optimization, respectively, to describe parametric models and develop better models for a problem, introduce many unknowns into the model generation process. This paper explains CGP as applied to parametric design and investigates the difference between using mating, mutating and both strategies together as a way of combining aspects of parent models, under selection by a genetic algorithm under random, objective and user (Interactive GA) preferences. We look into how this effects the resultant overiterated interaction in relation to both the geometry and the parametric model.

title Topological interlocking in architecture: A new design method and computational tool for designing building floors

summary This article presents a framework for the design process of structural systems based on the notion of topological interlocking. A new design method and a computational tool for generating valid architectural topological interlocking geometries are discussed. In the heart of the method are an algorithm for automatically generating valid two-dimensional patterns and a set of procedures for creating several types of volumetric blocks based on the two-dimensional patterns. Additionally, the computational tool can convert custom sets of closed planar curves into structural elements based on the topological interlocking principle. The method is examined in a case study of a building floor. The article concludes with discussions on the potential advantages of using the method for architectural design, as well as on challenging aspects of further development of this method toward implementation in practice.

title Surveying design spaces with performance maps: A multivariate visualization method for parametric design and architectural design optimization

summary This article presents a method to visualize high-dimensional parametric design spaces with applications in computational design processes and interactive optimization. The method extends Star Coordinates using a triangulation-based interpolation with Barycentric Coordinates. It supports the understanding of design problems in architectural design optimization by allowing designers to move between a high-dimensional design space and a low-dimensional Performance Map. This Performance Map displays the characteristics of the fitness landscape, develops designers’ intuitions about the relationships between design parameters and performance, allows designers to examine promising design variants, and delineates promising areas for further design exploration.

summary Smart Growth is an urban design movement initiated by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States (Smart Growth America, 2019). The regulations of Smart Growth control urban morphologies such as building height, use, position, section configurations, façade configurations, and materials, which have an explicit association with energy performances. This research aims to analyze and visualize the impact of Smart Growth developments on environmental performances. This paper presents a parametric modeling and simulation framework for Smart Growth developments that can model the potential community development scenarios, simulate the environmental footprints of each parcel, and visualize the results of modeling and simulation. We implemented and examined the proposed framework through a case study of two Smart Growth regulations: Columbia Unified Development Code (UDC) in Missouri (City of Columbia Missouri, 2017) and Overland Park Downtown Form-based Code (FBC) in Kansas City (City of Overland Park, 2017, 2019). Last, we discuss the implementation results, the limitations of the proposed framework, and the future work. We anticipate that the proposed method can improve stakeholders' understanding of how Smart Growth developments are associated with potential environmental footprints from an expeditious and thorough exploration of what-if scenarios of the multiple development schemes.

summary The proliferation of parametric tools has allowed for the design of previously impossible geometry, but the construction industry has failed to keep pace. We demonstrate the use of industrial robots to disrupt the ancient process of casting concrete and create an adjustable formwork capable of generating various cast components based on digital input, crafting a new approach to “programmable matter.” The resulting research delineates a novel methodology to facilitate otherwise cost-prohibitive, even impossible design. The MARS Pavilion employs this methodology in a building-sized proof of concept where manipulating fabric with industrial robots achieves previously unattainable precision while casting numerous connective concrete components to form a demountable lattice structure. The pavilion is the result of parametric form finding, in which a catenary structure ensures that the loads are acting primarily in compression. Every concrete component is unique, yet can be assembled together with a 1/16-inch tolerance. Expanding Culver & Sarafian’s previous investigations, industrial robot arms are sent coordinates to position fabric sleeves into which concrete is poured, facilitating a rapid digital-to-physical casting process. With this fabrication method, parametric variation in design is cost-competitive relative to other iterative casting techniques. This digital breakthrough necessitated analogue material studies of rapid-setting, high-strength concrete and flexible, integral reinforcing systems. The uniquely shaped components are coupled with uniform connectors designed to attach three limbs of concrete, forming a highly stable, compressive hex-grid shell structure. A finite element analysis (FEA) was a critical step in the structural engineering process to simulate various load scenarios on the pavilion and drive the shape of the connective elements to their optimal form.

summary The paper presents results of a research conducted in 2015 and 2016 at Lodz University of Technology. It proposes a purpose and context fit approach towards the automation of urban data generation based on GIS tools and New Urbanism typologies. First, background studies of methods applied in urban morphology analysis are revealed. Form-Based Code planning, and subsequently Transect-Based Code are taken into account. Then, selected examples from literature are described and discussed. Finally, the research study is presented and the outcomes compared with more traditional methodology.

summary This paper presents empirical research into the acoustic performance of randomized robotically fabricated patterns. Randomness is introduced as degrees of variations in code, both supported by quasi-predictable variations in a computational process, and the select changes through multiple variables in precise robotic fabrication that extend the spectrum for manufacturing diversity in micro-geometries that can change the acoustic response of space. Through physical acoustic testing of scale model 1:10 prototypes in a scale model reverberant box, and consecutive re-modelling of sound discs based on root mean square and depth comparison, a tendency for acoustic behaviours both for scattering and absorption could be demonstrated that relates low spatial frequency magnitude of surface modulation closely to scattering coefficient in a limited case study of six samples. As a result, the study presents a mathematical model that links form and material for sound scattering.

summary In architectural education, the demand for creating forms with a non-Euclidean geometry, which can only be achieved by using the computer-aided design tools, is increasing. The teaching of this subject is a great challenge for both students and instructors, because of the intensive nature of architecture undergraduate programs. Therefore, for the creation of those forms with a non-Euclidean geometry, experimental work was carried out in an elective course based on the learning visual programming language. The creation of folding structures with form-finding by simulation was chosen as the subject of the design production which would be done as part of the content of the course. In this particular course, it was intended that all stages should be experienced, from the modeling in the virtual environment to the digital fabrication. Hence, in their early years of architectural education, the students were able to learn versatile thinking by experiencing, simultaneously, the use of simulation in the environment of visual programming language, the forming space by using folding structures, the material-based thinking and the creation of their designs suitable to the digital fabrication.

summary Acoustical design is one of the most challenging aspects of architecture. A complex system of competing influences (e.g., space geometry, size, proportion, material properties, surface detail, etc.) contribute to shaping the quality of the auditory experience. In particular, architectural surfaces affect the way that sound reflections propagate through space. By diffusing the reflected sound energy, surface designs can promote a more homogeneous auditory atmosphere by mitigating sharp and focused reflections. One of the challenges with designing an effective diffuser is the need to respond to a wide band of sound wavelengths, which requires the surface profile to precisely encode a range of detail sizes, depths and angles. Most of the available sound diffusers are designed to respond to a narrow band of frequencies. In this context, fractal-based surface designs can provide a unique opportunity for mitigating such limitations. A key principle of fractal geometry is its multilevel hierarchical order, which enables the same pattern to occur at different scales. This characteristic makes it a potential candidate for diffusing a wider band of sound wavelengths. However, predicting the reflection patterns of complicated fractal-based surface designs can be challenging using available acoustical software. These tools are often costly, complicated and are not designed for predicting early sound propagation paths. This research argues that writing customized algorithms provides a valuable, free and efficient alternative for addressing targeted acoustical design problems. The paper presents a methodology for designing and testing a customized algorithm for predicting sound diffusion patterns of fractal-based surfaces. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were used to develop the code and evaluate the results.

summary This article introduces the theoretical and technical framework for the design of a temporary rooftop canopy on the red generator—one of the buildings designed by Bernard Tschumi for the Florida International University School of Architecture. The project, Lumifoil, was designed using both top-down and bottom-up computational techniques, including surface modeling via projected geometries and scripted cellular subdivisions and assemblies. Lumifoil attempts to synthesize these two often-conflicting design approaches into a generative design process which leverages context, form, surface, and structure as affective and effective actors. Lumifoil is the result of a design methodology which is both active and reactive to existing conditions of the site and new opportunities afforded by the program. It is contextual in its top-down relationship to Tschumi’s existing building and theory, generative in how details emerge bottom-up through scripts which lack any reference to site, and emergent in the resulting synthetic processes and effects which are produced. Through this methodological development, the project both tracks and responds to popular architectural theory and design from the mid-1990s to today. The theoretical underpinnings of the project build upon the idea that the actual (the real-life physical manifestation of matter) and the virtual (the potential for an object to be) are two constantly shifting paradigms in which design processes can intervene to help develop an architectural solution from a range of possibilities. The technical aspect of the project includes the collaborative workflow between the architecture offices of OTA+ and studio MODO with Arup Engineers to resolve structural issues using parametric modeling tools and structural analysis software. The final project is entirely parametric and fabrication is completely automated.

summary Design space catalogs, which present a collection of different options for selection by human designers, have become commonplace in architecture. Increasingly, these catalogs are rapidly generated using parametric models and informed by simulations that describe energy usage, structural efficiency, daylight availability, views, acoustic properties, and other aspects of building performance. However, by conceiving of computational methods as a means for fostering interactive, collaborative, guided, expert-dependent design processes, many opportunities remain to improve upon the originally static archetype of the design space catalog. This paper presents developments in the areas of interaction, automation, simplification, and visualization that seek to improve on the current catalog model while also describing a vision for effective computer-aided, performance-based design processes in the future.

summary Beginning from a provocation in Auguste Blanqui’s Eternity by the Stars, this paper reports on a new methodology of digital collage for urban design. The research is situated relative to the current discourses surrounding both voxelization and point-cloud data structures in order to motivate the concept of a recombinant approach to design in existing cities. Building on these sources, and with reference to recent developments in mesh shape composition techniques, the paper presents the resulting software implementation “Point-Cloud-Paint”: a tool that enables collage-based combinatorial experimentation with urban point-cloud data.

summary Modern design of urban forms is venturing towards performative, site-specific architecture that are formed according to the attributes of its urban context. Parametric modelling techniques offer designers the ability to embed generative mechanisms into the design process to allow performance based design. This paper focuses on the development of a synthesis model that generates an Urban Form schema using computational design principles. The design system illustrates a rule-based systematic approach to urban form generation and is a precursor to the automatic exploration of urban forms based on design analytics and evaluation of urban metrics. The role of the architect begins to shift from the designer of objects to the designer of processes with urban planning following a trajectory of data-generated and contextual specific design.
