summary This paper presents the partial results of a research that experiments the use of Virtual Reality (VR) in the analysis of future interventions in the architecture of the city of Belém. The objective was the virtual reconstruction of part of the port area of the city, as it was about 100 years. The methods include a historical survey of the site, visits to obtain photographs and measurements, as well as the digital reconstruction of buildings (external faces only). The experiment used Sketchup software for modeling, Unity 3D for rendering and navigation, and HTC Vive glasses for immersion.

summary Emerging technologies that use data have contributed to the success of communication all over the world. Social media and gaming industries have already taken advantage of the web to provide synchronous communication and updated information. Conversely, existing methods of communication within the AEC industry require multiple platforms, such as emails and file sharing services in conjunction with 3D Modelling software, to inform changes made by stakeholders, resulting in file duplication and limited accessibility to the latest version, while augmenting existing practice's inefficiency. As communication is critical to the success of a project and should be enhanced, Redback BIM promises to establish a workflow for a dynamic platform, while achieving similar results to that of a 3D modelling program hosted on the web. Using existing open-source web development software, multiple users will be able to collaboratively organise and synchronise changes made to the design scheme in real-time. Features such as this would enable more fluid communication between multiple stakeholders within the life of a project.

summary Participation and communication in urban planning, visualisation, spatial perception, and motivation through gamification are discussed and system requirements derived. An augmented reality multi-client communication prototype is described improving transparency and utilising local expertise in planning processes. The selection, processing and visualisation of planning data takes individual stakeholders knowledge and skill levels, cultural backgrounds, and interests into account to facilitate understanding through moderation and the ability to change perspective.

summary This work presents a design for mass customization of modular housing applied to the Brazilian case, through modeling in grasshopper. These parametric tools contribute to an increase in the flexibility of the decisions and allow the execution, generating a wide range of solutions for the same problem. As a case study, it was considered the environmental disaster which occurred in the city of Mariana, whose homeless population remains displaced. Although in the initial phase of studies, this modular housing model aims to discuss principles of variability, flexibility, and pre-fabrication, delegating more decisions to end-users of large-scale social housing.

summary This paper describes the experience of introducing students to design processes that use algorithm design and BIM tools. An exercise was presented to instigate the students to explore the interface between two known processes: the creation of algorithms in Grasshopper and the manipulation of objects in a BIM environment using Archicad. The exercise aimed at bridging the gap between algorithmic form creation and manipulation and representation and documentation techniques required in the design studios in order to encourage the students to explore new design processes using the appropriate tools at each stage.

summary The paper describes the interdisciplinary course, Escaping Flatlands, focusing on improving communication between students, who were either from the field of architecture or media informatics and human-computer interaction. There were two underlying themes. The first, the integration and augmentation of digital media and haptic models, escaping the flatland of classic architectural media such as paper or screens. The second theme, expert-laymen communication in public participation, was addressed in the contextual theme and content of the course task, the communication between students of different fields, and the presentation of robust working prototypes at an architectural exhibition. Students, in groups of four, developed three interactive architectural models enhanced with digital content. The course resulted in a number of benefits to students, the chairs, and implications for research. It also led to further collabourations between the two universities involved, including cross-over Bachelor and Master Thesis.

summary Being in tune with the joint eCAADe and SIGraDi conference, this paper systematizes and analyzes data related to the set of papers presented in the history of the conferences of both societies. Which paths traced from eCAADe and SIGraDi brought us to the "architecture in the age of the fourth industrial revolution"? This paper describes a bibliometric study focused on eCCADe and SIGraDi papers from 2003 to 2018 retrieved from CumInCad by using an open source software developed by the team for this research. The most used keywords and most cited authors, cross-citations between societies and time series about this data were synthesized, recovering part of the histories of these societies. Some similarities and differences between them are pointed out allowing to understand their past for better drawing their future.

summary This paper discusses the relevance of CAVE systems in comparison with virtual and augmented reality head-mounted displays in terms of immersion experience, costs, maintenance, ease to use, interactivity, and social interaction. It is based on a comparative study of a systematic literature review comprising the works available at CumInCAD and IEEE databases in the period from 1998-2018, and empirical data from technical visits made to five CAVEs in Europe. The discussion seeks to cover the limits of each technology and questions the need for CAVEs nowadays.

summary The transport infrastructures are important elements in the cities, but, as there is a lack of planning, they tear through the urban fabric and leave empty spaces. Due to government and private disinterest, these spaces become vacant, forgotten and degraded. However, these extensive Terrain Vague offer new potential for urban use. To exploit this potential, we need methodologies that can offer personalised, extensive, feasible urban solutions. For this, we propose a computational generative system, following a 4-step methodology: 1) Site analyses and Terrain Vague identification; 2) Site classification according to parameters based on a "visual grammar"; 3) Algorithm associating space properties with geometric transformation to generate solutions: namely transformative operations in public spaces, additive transformations in semi-public spaces and subtractive operations in semi-private spaces; 4) Solution evaluation and development, according to shade criteria, spatial hierarchy and volumetric density. With our own algorithms combined with genetic algorithms, we guided the evolution of 50 volumetric solutions. The exponential increase in information requires new methodologies (Schwab, 2018). Results show the potential of computational methodologies to produce extensive urban solutions. This research, developed in a final graduation project in Architecture, aims at stimulating generative methodologies in undergraduate courses.

summary In this paper we introduce mineR- a tool that integrates statistical data analysis inside the parametric design environment Grasshopper. We first discuss how the integration of statistical data analysis would improve the parametric modelling workflow. Then we present the statistical programming language R. Thereafter, we show how mineR is built to facilitate the use of R in the context of parametric modelling. Using two example cases, we demonstrate the potential of implementing mineR in the context of urban design and analysis. Finally, we discuss the results and possible further developments.

summary The project aims to investigate the possibility of VR in a combination of visualizing high-dimensional urban data. Our study proposes a data-based tool for urban planners, architects, and researchers to 3D visualize and experience an urban quarter. Users have a possibility to choose a specific part of a city according to urban data input like "buildings, streets, and landscapes". This data-based tool is based on an algorithm to translate data from Shapefiles (.sh) in a form of a virtual cube model. The tool can be scaled and hence applied globally. The goal of the study is to improve understanding of the connection and analysis of high-dimensional urban data beyond a two-dimensional static graph or three-dimensional image. Professionals may find an optimized condition between urban data through abstract simulation. By implementing this tool in the early design process, researchers have an opportunity to develop a new vision for extending and optimizing urban materials.

title Parametricism as style: the relationship between methodology of scientific research programmes and parametric design

summary During the 1990s many architects, who dissociated from critical theory, were looking for new design methodologies that did not confine themselves as stylistic currents. One of these propractice movement is done by means of parametric design. Aiming to investigate the boundaries between methodology and style, this paper proposes to answer the question: does the parametric architecture constitute a new style, as Patrik Schumacher says? It reviews Heinrich Wölfflin concept of style in the contemporary context; it presents Imre Lakatos theory (methodology of scientific research programmes) and how Schumacher appropriates of it followed by a critical reflection on the limits of such appropriation.

Looking into Nature's lessons, this paper presents a Nature-based design methodology conducted during Kine[SIS]tem'17 Shading Systems International Summer School, held by the ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, Portugal, between 19th - 30th June 2017. The methodology encompasses two main stages, one before and other during the Summer School. From a pre-definition of context constrains, a nature based design strategy, to a planning of the manufacture and construction still during the phase of development of the design, conducted the Summer School participants through a defined biomimetic process that achieved the construction of 1:1 scale prototype.

summary 3D Geographic Information Systems (3D GIS) are systems capable of performing spatial analyzes that consider a three-dimensional representation of objects, through their planialtimetric coordinates. City Geography Markup Language (CityGML) is used for city and urban applications. The main challenges for this system implementation refer to the techniques used to obtain data, and their formats, in addition to the various software used in geometric modeling. In this way, this article aims to discuss geometric modeling for a university campus using airborne laser scanning data, aiming at the creation of database for applications development.

summary Patten and Ishii (2000) discovered that people are employing more versatile strategies for spatial distribution when using a tangible user interface (TUI) as opposed to a graphics user interface (GUI) (Patten & Ishii, 2000). Besides, the generated information outputs of conventional two-dimensional interacting screens are currently almost entirely addressing the visual and acoustic senses but lacking in other sensory stimuli - such as haptic, body equilibrium and sense of gravity. With the experiment described here, the multi-dimensionality of both the input on the interface and the output of the human interaction will be challenged. This paper aims to introduce a method to a real world versatile three-dimensional interface actuating a simulated spatial environment that substantiates the more unconventional sensory perception mentioned above. A physical prototype using an Arduino will be assembled to test the feasibility of the structure.
