summary Daylight standards are one of the main factors for the shape and image of cities. With urbanization and ongoing densification of cities, new planning regulations are emerging in order to manage access to sun light. In Estonia a daylight standard defines the rights of light for existing buildings and the direct solar access requirement for new premises. The solar envelope method and environmental simulations to compute direct sun light hours on building façades can be used to design buildings that respect both daylight requirements. However, no existing tool integrates both methods in an easy to use manner. Further, the assessment of façade performance needs to be related to the design of interior layouts and of building clusters to be meaningful to architects. Hence, the present work presents a computational design workflow for the evaluation and optimisation of high density building clusters in urban environments in relation to direct solar access requirements and selected types of floor plans.

summary Increasing use of BIM has represented a continuing shift in traditional assumptions on how we navigate the design process. BIM is affording the student the ability to gain a greater understanding of their design ideas via the exploration of scale, spatial organisation and structure, amongst many other design layers, in increasing levels of detail, at the same point in the design process. Architectural education is at a delayed tipping point where architectural students are increasingly looking towards BIM to streamline their design process drawn by the production of realistic visualisation, but with a lack of knowledge and skill in its application. With a lack of guidance and understanding around the application of BIM, the use of BIM in this manner overlooks the potential of BIM to construct and test virtual simulations of proposed schemes, to support design enquiry. A historical concern for the pedagogy constructed around the students’ design process is the application of methods and techniques that support the progression through the design process, (Ambrose, 2014; dash mei & Safari, 2018). This study examines the design process of architectural students and the interaction between analogue and digital methods used in design. These primary modes of communication, offer the opportunity to query the roles and rules of traditional architectural conventions around ‘problem finding’ and ‘problem solving’, challenging the ‘traditional’ design process examined by pioneers like Bruner (1966) and Schon (1987). These approaches are distilled from the findings of the study and presented as guidance to those teaching in architectural aBIMemia to align pedagogic goals to methods of abstraction in this new era of design education reconsidering digital methods in design.

title Machine Learning-based Optimization Design Workflow based on Obstruction Angles for Building Facades

summary This paper proposes a ML-based optimization design workflow based on obstruction angles for the optimization of building facades (i.e. g-value and window width). The optimization output consists of the optimal clustering of windows in order to ensure a desired level of daylight provision according to method 2 defined in the EN17307:2018 (i.e. based on Spatial Daylight Autonomy: sDA) and to not exceed a maximum level of specific cooling capacity (SCC). The independent variables or design parameters of the parametric model are: room orientation/dimensions, window dimensions, and obstruction angle (??). The ML prediction models were trained and tested with reliable simulation results using validate softwares. The total number of room combinations is 61440 for sDA and SCC simulations. The development of reliable (90% of right predictions) ML predictive models based on decision tree technique were calibrated. The optimal clustering of windows was done first by floors and secondly by the designer’s need to homogenize the external facade with similar glazing properties and window sizes, having impact on the annual heating consumption. The proposed method help designers to make accurate and faster design decisions during early design stages and renovation plans.

title Machine Learning Approach versus Prediction Formulas to Design Healthy Dwellings in a Cold Climate

summary This paper presents a study about the prediction accuracy of daylight provision and overheating levels in dwellings when considering different methods (machine learning vs prediction formulas), training, and validation data sets. An existing high-rise building located in Tallinn, Estonia was considered to compare the best ML predictive method with novel prediction formulas. The quantification of daylight provision was conducted according to the European daylight standard EN 17037:2018 (based on minimum Daylight Factor (minDF)) and overheating level in terms of the degree-hour (DH) metric included in local regulations. The features included in the dataset are the minDF and DH values related to different combinations of design parameters: window-to-floor ratio, level of obstruction, g-value, and visible transmittance of the glazing system. Different training and validation data sets were obtained from a main data set of 5120 minDF values and 40960 DH values obtained through simulation with Radiance and EnergyPlus, respectively. For each combination of training and validation dataset, the accuracy of the ML model was quantified and compared with the accuracy of the prediction formulas. According to our results, the ML model could provide more accurate minDF/DH predictions than by using the prediction formulas for the same design parameters. However, the amount of room combinations needed to train the machine-learning model is larger than for the calibration of the prediction formulas. The paper discuss in detail the method to use in practice, depending on time and accuracy concerns.

summary This paper presents an initial version of the mapping of Brazilian actors in the field of immersive technologies applied to architecture, urbanism, design, and arts. The mapping includes academic and artistic actors who have produced within the researched theme between 2018-2023. Google Scholar and institutional repositories were the main search tools for relevant productions. After gathering the data, validation procedures were conducted. The eligible names were then added to an online table, intended to be collaborative and dynamic The results revealed a total of 45 mapped actors, including eight artists and 38 academics, affiliated with 21 institutions across Brazil. The collaborative online table situates Brazilian immersive technologies production and help to identify affinities between actors, fostering collaborations and research networks. It provides the possibility of visualizing the distribution of these actors nationwide, informing the academic and non-academic communities about the national artistic and scientific productions within the field.

summary Our everyday environment plays a significant role in shaping our social and emotional interactions. It has been empirically evidenced that natural daylight mitigates depression, insomnia, and other disorders (Weber, 2022). This resonates with the fact that individuals with disrupted circadian rhythms are more susceptible to mental health perturbations (Menculini et al., 2018). The current investigation delves into the correlation between luminosity and spatial configuration within the Guillermo Grantt Benavente Psychiatry Service in Concepción, Chile. The contention is that proficient spatial connectivity and exposure to natural daylight can potentially enhance therapeutic dimensions. The overarching objective is to comprehend this nexus for formulating an architectural design methodology. Specific objectives encompass: 1. Defining the communal spaces under scrutiny; 2. Analyzing luminosity and spatial attributes. The methodological approach encompasses a hybrid framework encompassing interviews, spatial analysis, and illuminance measurements. An intricate interrelationship among preferred spaces, illuminance, and spatial characteristics is anticipated.

summary This article presents preliminary results of a research under development at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul on BIM notebooks. It aims to study notebooks produced by Brazilian government agencies to identify characteristics and focuses of the content presented. In this step, notebooks from the states of Santa Catarina (2018), Paraná (2018) and the Federal District (2020) were mapped. Such notebooks were prepared from 2018 and define guidelines for contracting and elaborating public building projects developed based on the BIM methodology in order to satisfactorily meet the needs of the States within the scope of the Executive Branch in relation to public building projects developed in BIM . They are also used as annexes in public notices, for contracting projects, works and services developed in BIM.

summary Emerging technologies that use data have contributed to the success of communication all over the world. Social media and gaming industries have already taken advantage of the web to provide synchronous communication and updated information. Conversely, existing methods of communication within the AEC industry require multiple platforms, such as emails and file sharing services in conjunction with 3D Modelling software, to inform changes made by stakeholders, resulting in file duplication and limited accessibility to the latest version, while augmenting existing practice's inefficiency. As communication is critical to the success of a project and should be enhanced, Redback BIM promises to establish a workflow for a dynamic platform, while achieving similar results to that of a 3D modelling program hosted on the web. Using existing open-source web development software, multiple users will be able to collaboratively organise and synchronise changes made to the design scheme in real-time. Features such as this would enable more fluid communication between multiple stakeholders within the life of a project.

summary Designers often carry out their work in the early design stages with disregard to prefabrication requirements, leading to poorly thought out design decisions in terms of precast concrete planning efficiency. If precast expertise could be integrated early into design schemes, this would improve design efficiency, reduce errors and misalignments, and save time at every design iteration. The objective is not to replace precast domain experts, but to help architects make better-informed design decisions. This research is part of a wider investigation that aims to develop a rule-based expert system to support an automated review of precast concrete requirements in BIM models in the early design stages, proactively providing feedback for design decision support. This specific paper summarizes the theoretical part of the research and proposes a way to formalize precast expert knowledge as rule-sets in a tabular form that can be later programmed and integrated in a BIM platform for automated checking of BIM models.

An augmented reality multi-client communication prototype is described improving transparency and utilising local expertise in planning processes. summary Decisions taken at early stages of building design have a significant effect on the planning steps for the entire lifetime of the project as well as the performance of the building throughout its lifecycle (MacLeamy 2004). Building Information Modelling (BIM) could bring forward and enhance the planning and decision-making processes by enabling the direct reuse of data hold by the model for diverse analysis and simulation tasks (Borrmann et al. 2015). The architect today besides a couple of simplified simulation tools almost exclusively uses his know-how for evaluating and comparing design variants in the early stages of design. This paper focuses on finding new ways to facilitate the use of analytical and simulation tools during the important early phases of conceptual building design, where the models are partially incomplete. The necessary enrichment and proper detailing of the design model could be achieved by means of dialogue-based interaction concepts with analytical and simulation tools through adaptive detailing strategies. This concept is explained using an example scenario for design process. A generic description of the aimed dialog-based interface to various simulation tools will also be discussed in this paper using an example scenario.

summary In this paper we introduce mineR- a tool that integrates statistical data analysis inside the parametric design environment Grasshopper. We first discuss how the integration of statistical data analysis would improve the parametric modelling workflow. Then we present the statistical programming language R. Thereafter, we show how mineR is built to facilitate the use of R in the context of parametric modelling. Using two example cases, we demonstrate the potential of implementing mineR in the context of urban design and analysis. Finally, we discuss the results and possible further developments.

summary The project aims to investigate the possibility of VR in a combination of visualizing high-dimensional urban data. Our study proposes a data-based tool for urban planners, architects, and researchers to 3D visualize and experience an urban quarter. Users have a possibility to choose a specific part of a city according to urban data input like "buildings, streets, and landscapes". This data-based tool is based on an algorithm to translate data from Shapefiles (.sh) in a form of a virtual cube model. The tool can be scaled and hence applied globally. The goal of the study is to improve understanding of the connection and analysis of high-dimensional urban data beyond a two-dimensional static graph or three-dimensional image. Professionals may find an optimized condition between urban data through abstract simulation. By implementing this tool in the early design process, researchers have an opportunity to develop a new vision for extending and optimizing urban materials.

summary During the 1990s many architects, who dissociated from critical theory, were looking for new design methodologies that did not confine themselves as stylistic currents. One of these propractice movement is done by means of parametric design. Aiming to investigate the boundaries between methodology and style, this paper proposes to answer the question: does the parametric architecture constitute a new style, as Patrik Schumacher says? It reviews Heinrich Wölfflin concept of style in the contemporary context; it presents Imre Lakatos theory (methodology of scientific research programmes) and how Schumacher appropriates of it followed by a critical reflection on the limits of such appropriation.

summary This paper presents a comparative study of Dense Stereo Matching (DSM) tools to generate point cloud from digital photogrammetric restitution. The capability of four different state-of-the-art software systems as Photoscan (Agisoft), 3DF Zephyr Free (3Dflow), Remake (Autodesk) and Recap 360 (Autodesk) is examined to document a historical object. The main aspects compared are: processing time, export file formats, file size, quality and density of point clouds obtained from tools standard parameters. From the literature review, the analysis and the experiments, it is possible to evaluate the potential of DSM technique for the existing building documentation.

Methodologically, the article is the result of both a bibliographical research and an empirical research, from which, in contemporary times, is evidenced the strengthening of flexible, collaborative, creative and innovative processes, prevailing premises in the maker movement.

title IndAtlas - Technopolitic platform for urban investigation

summary This article presents the project of the urban research platform IndAtlas, currently in early development stage by UFMG’s Research Group Indisciplinar. Through the association of crowdsourcing tools, a spatial database and the production of visualizations of different types, it is intended to create a Web platform for collecting, analyzing and depicting information about processes of production and transformation of urban space. It is proposed that the phenomena (themes) investigated in the platform are approached mainly from four axes: 1) spatial / territorial; 2) temporal; 3) social; 4) communicational. To do this, we try to combine online collaborative maps with the production of dynamic timelines and visualizations of networks of social actors (graphs), connected with social networks and Wiki pages. The article will address the development of Indisciplinar’s working method, which guided the proposal of the platform, as well as the functional and technical aspects to be observed for its implementation, the proposed architecture and the importance of interoperability for the project. Finally, the inquiries derived from the first test experiment of an IndAtlas test prototype will be presented. The experiment took place in a workshop belonging to the Cidade Eletrônika 2018 Festival – an arts and technology event. The workshop was offered in January of the same year, and it proposed a collaborative cartography of the Santa Tereza neighborhood, in Belo Horizonte / MG – a traditional neighborhood of great importance for historical heritage, currently subject to great real estate pressure and the focus of a series of territorial disputes.

summary The paper presents the development of a building system made from solid timber that fulfils the requirements of modern building skins while expanding the design possibilities through innovation in computational design and digital fabrication. Multiple strategies are employed to develop a versatile construction system that generates structure, enclosure and insulation while enabling a broad design space for contemporary architectural expression. The basic construction unit augments the comparatively high insulation values of solid timber by cutting longitudinal slits into beams, generating air chambers that further inhibit thermal conductivity. These units are further enhanced through a joinery system that uses advanced parametric modeling and computerized control to augment traditional joinery techniques. Prototypes of the system are tested at a building component level with digital models and physical laboratory tests. It is further evaluated in a demonstrator building to test development and further refine design, fabrication and assembly methods. Results are integrated into proposals for new methods of implementation. The results of the research thus far demonstrate the validity of the strategy, and continuing research will improve its viability as a building system.
