title Mereologies - Combinatorial Design and the Description of Urban Form.
source Kepczynska-Walczak, A, Bialkowski, S (eds.), Computing for a better tomorrow - Proceedings of the 36th eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, Lodz University of Technology, Lodz, Poland, 19-21 September 2018, pp. 85-94

summary This paper discusses the ability to apply machine learning to the combinatorial design-assembly at the scale of a building to urban form. Connecting the historical lines of discrete automata in computer science and formal studies in architecture this research contributes to the field of additive material assemblies, aggregative architecture and their possible upscaling to urban design. The following case studies are a preparation to apply deep-learning on the computational descriptions of urban form. Departing from the game Go as a testbed for the development of deep-learning applications, an equivalent platform can be designed for architectural assembly. By this, the form of a building is defined via the overlap between separate building parts. Building on part-relations, this research uses mereology as a term for a set of recursive assembly strategies, integrated into the design aspects of the building parts. The models developed by research by design are formally described and tested under a digital simulation environment. The shown case study shows the process of how to transform geometrical elements to architectural parts based merely on their compositional aspects either in horizontal or three-dimensional arrangements.

summary Participatory planning aims at engaging multiple stakeholders including citizens in various stages of planning projects. Adopting participatory design approach in the early stage of planning project facilitates the ideation process of citizens. We have implemented a participatory design study during the 2017 Beijing Design Week and have conducted an interactive design project called "Design your perfect Dashilar: You Place it!". Participants including local residents and visitors were asked to redesign the Yangmeizhu street, a historical street located in Dashilar area by rearranging the buildings of residential, commercial, administration, and cultural functionalities. Apart from using digital design tools, questionnaires, interviews, and sensor network were applied to collect personal preferences data. Computational approaches were used to extract features from designs and personal preferences. In this paper, we illustrate the implementation of the participatory design and the possible applications by combining with crowdsourcing. Participatory design data and citizens profiles with personal preferences were analysed and their correlations were computed. By using crowdsourcing and participatory design, this study shows that the digitalization of participatory design with data science perspective can indicate the implicit requirements, needs and design ideas of citizens.

title Customised Collaborative Urban Design - A Collective User-based Urban Information System through Gaming
source Kepczynska-Walczak, A, Bialkowski, S (eds.), Computing for a better tomorrow - Proceedings of the 36th eCAADe Conference - Volume 1, Lodz University of Technology, Lodz, Poland, 19-21 September 2018, pp. 419-428

summary As we step into a new data-based information age, it is important to get citizens involved in the whole design process. Our research tries to build up a user-based urban information system by collecting the data of neighborhood land use preference from all the residents through gaming. The result of each individual decision will be displayed in real time using Augmented Reality technology, while the collective decision dataset will be stored, analyzed and learnt by computer, forming an optimal layout that meets the highest demand of the community. A pre-experiment has been conducted in a. an abstract virtual site and b. an existing site by collecting opinions from 122 participants, which shows that the system works well as a new method for collaborative design. This system has the potential to be applied both in realistic planning processes, as a negotiation toolkit, and in virtual urban forming, in the case of computer games or space colonization.

summary Heritage protection entails the integrated construction of conservation and collective memory based on historical authenticity. Therefore, the study of history is essential for accomplishing the task of heritage conservation. This article applies a space syntax methodology to explore how urban morphology evolved at a heritage site on Kulangsu Island. The analysis reveals the characteristic features of urban morphology and offers suggestions for optimizing the historical space of world heritage. The effectiveness and limitations of the research are also debated and substantiated.

title Augmented Reality Technology based Wind Environment Visualization
source T. Fukuda, W. Huang, P. Janssen, K. Crolla, S. Alhadidi (eds.), Learning, Adapting and Prototyping - Proceedings of the 23rd CAADRIA Conference - Volume 1, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, 17-19 May 2018, pp. 369-377

summary Considering the outdoor environment at the initial stage of design process plays a significant role on future building performance. Augmented Reality (AR) technology applied in this research can integrate real world building morphology information and virtual world ventilation information seamlessly that rapidly and directly provides designers information for observation and evaluation. During the case study of "2017 Shanghai DigitalFUTURE" summer workshop, a research on augmented reality technology based wind environment visualization was carried on. The achievement with an application software not only showed the geometric information of the real world objects (such as buildings), but also the virtual wind environment has displayed. Thus, these two kinds of information can complement and superimpose each other. This AR technology based software brings multiple synthetic together, which can (1) visualize the air flow around buildings that provides designers rapid and direct information for evaluation; (2) deal with wind-environment-related data quantitatively and present in an intuitive, easy-to-interpret graphical way; and (3) be further developed as a visualization system based on built-in environments in the future, which contributes to rapid evaluation of a series of programs at the beginning of the building design.

title Optimization Design Study of Lightweight Temporary Building Integrated with PCMS Through CFD Simulation
source T. Fukuda, W. Huang, P. Janssen, K. Crolla, S. Alhadidi (eds.), Learning, Adapting and Prototyping - Proceedings of the 23rd CAADRIA Conference - Volume 2, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, 17-19 May 2018, pp. 155-164
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2018.2.155
summary In fact, the phase change materials (PCMs) integrated in the building envelope structure can decrease the buildings' energy consumption by enhancing thermal energy storage capacity, which has been acknowledged and appreciated by many engineers and architects. To achieve a better practical application effect under the minimum cost principle and provide a different design method based on indoor thermal discomfort evaluation results for stakeholders, this paper numerically test the application effect of composite envelope under Tianjin climate through commercial computational fluid dynamic soft (Fluent). Further, parameter sensitivity to thermal performance of the composite envelope and indoor thermal discomfort are investigated in this paper, and two different evaluation indicators are introduced and used here. The numerical results obtained in this paper support the high potential of using PCM in lightweight temporary buildings and highlight the further optimization design work.

title Digital Design and Construction of Lightweight Steel-Timber Composite Gridshell for Large-Span Roof - A Practice of Steel-timber Composite Gridshell in Venue B for 2018 West Bund World AI Conference
source M. Haeusler, M. A. Schnabel, T. Fukuda (eds.), Intelligent & Informed - Proceedings of the 24th CAADRIA Conference - Volume 1, Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand, 15-18 April 2019, pp. 183-192

summary Timber gridshell is an efficient structural system. However, the feature of double curved surface result in limitation of practical application of timber gridshell. Digital technology provides an opportunity to break this limitation and achieve a lightweight free-form gridshell. In the practice of Venue B for 2018 West Bund World AI Conference, architects and structural engineers cooperated to explore innovative design of lightweight steel-timber composite gridshell with the help of digital tools. Setting digital technology as support and restrains of the project as motivation, the design tried to achieve the realization of material, structure, construction and spatial expression. The digital design and construction process will be discussed from four aspects, including form-finding of gridshell surface, steel-timber composite design, digital detailed design and model-based fabrication and construction. We focuses on the use of digital tools in this process, as well as the role of the design subject.
