summary This paper discusses the potential of using data from social media and location data platforms to create cartographies that enhance our understanding of urban dynamics. Natural Language Processing (NLP) and sentiment analysis are highlighted as essential tools for comprehending and categorizing this data. The study conducted a systematic review of NLP and sentiment analysis applications in urban studies, covering 27 peer-reviewed journals and conference papers published between 2018 and 2023. The research classified applications into six categories: urban livability, governance and management, user and landscape perception, land use and zoning, public health, and transportation and mobility. Most studies primarily relied on data from social media platforms like Twitter and location data sources such as Google Maps and Trip Advisor. Challenges include dealing with irrelevant or misleading information in publicly available data and limited accuracy when analyzing sentiments of non-English-speaking populations.

summary This article presents preliminary results of a research under development at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul on BIM notebooks. It aims to study notebooks produced by Brazilian government agencies to identify characteristics and focuses of the content presented. In this step, notebooks from the states of Santa Catarina (2018), Paraná (2018) and the Federal District (2020) were mapped. Such notebooks were prepared from 2018 and define guidelines for contracting and elaborating public building projects developed based on the BIM methodology in order to satisfactorily meet the needs of the States within the scope of the Executive Branch in relation to public building projects developed in BIM . They are also used as annexes in public notices, for contracting projects, works and services developed in BIM.

summary This paper discusses the relevance of CAVE systems in comparison with virtual and augmented reality head-mounted displays in terms of immersion experience, costs, maintenance, ease to use, interactivity, and social interaction. It is based on a comparative study of a systematic literature review comprising the works available at CumInCAD and IEEE databases in the period from 1998-2018, and empirical data from technical visits made to five CAVEs in Europe. The discussion seeks to cover the limits of each technology and questions the need for CAVEs nowadays.

summary The project aims to investigate the possibility of VR in a combination of visualizing high-dimensional urban data. Our study proposes a data-based tool for urban planners, architects, and researchers to 3D visualize and experience an urban quarter. Users have a possibility to choose a specific part of a city according to urban data input like "buildings, streets, and landscapes". This data-based tool is based on an algorithm to translate data from Shapefiles (.sh) in a form of a virtual cube model. The tool can be scaled and hence applied globally. The goal of the study is to improve understanding of the connection and analysis of high-dimensional urban data beyond a two-dimensional static graph or three-dimensional image. Professionals may find an optimized condition between urban data through abstract simulation. By implementing this tool in the early design process, researchers have an opportunity to develop a new vision for extending and optimizing urban materials.

title A window to the autism: the political role of the difference of an objectile in the homogeneous school

summary This paper approaches the insertion of an objectile in the homogeneous space of a school, looking to bring flexibility and responsiveness to assist a user with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The research concerns with photosensitivity, a problem faced by almost 25% of the children with autism (Miller-Horn; Spence; Takeoka, 2011). The study is based on the theories for ASD environments that speak of ‘sensorial perception’ and ‘thinking with imagery’ (Mostafa, 2008), and the coexistence of Sensory Design Theory and Neuro-Typical Method (Pomana, 2015). The result consists of a gadget developed in MIT App Inventor tool and a curtain that interact responsively through an Arduino code, for a new connection between the user and his surroundings.

summary Gridshells are highly efficient, lightweight structures which can span long distances with minimal use of material (Vassallo & Malek 2017). One of the most promising and novel categories of gridshells are bending-active (elastic) systems (Lienhard & Gengnagel 2018), which are composed of flexible members (Kuijenhoven & Hoogenboom 2012). Timber elastic gridshells can be site-sprung or sequentially erected (geodesic). While a lot of research focus is on the site-sprung ones, the methods for design of sequentially-erected geodesic gridshells remained underdeveloped (Cichocka 2020). The main objective of the paper is to introduce a method of generating regular geodesic grid patterns on free-form surfaces and to examine its applicability to design structurally feasible geodesic gridshells. We adopted differential geometry methods of generating regular bidirectional geodesic grids on free-form surfaces. Then, we compared the structural performance of the regular and the irregular grids of the same density on three free-form surfaces. The proposed method successfully produces the regular geodesic grid patterns on the free-form surfaces with varying curvature-richness. Our analysis shows that gridshells with regular grid configurations perform structurally better than those with irregular patterns. We conclude that the presented method can be readily used and can expand possibilities of application of geodesic gridshells.

summary The problem of interferences due to the refurbishing activities of a complex building, carried out in parallel with the daily activities that characterize it, is not to be underestimated, especially when talking about a hospital structure. Consequently, the benefits that would be obtained by reducing the presence of construction activities result important in terms of safety and health of users, above all hospital patients. Setting the best solution of Gantt in the early stages of planning can be a winning strategy, as well as being able to recognize the safest and fastest path (e.g. predicting which is the fastest way to reach the rooms taken into consideration by the refurbishment). At the same time, being able to check which activities are most penalized by the presence of the construction site and to set which are essential for the survival of the activities that characterize the environment to be refurbished, e.g. the hospital ward, is a valid support tool for the healthcare staff. The proposed tool aims, on the one hand, to help designers by proposing the best possible Gantt solutions in relation to the management of daily activities that can not be suspended and on the other hand to support healthcare staff in the organization of these latter.

summary The noise generated by the presence of a construction site within complex structure in operation (e.g. school, hospital) is a problem that too often is underestimated but that can generate problems of different nature, both concerning the health of the actors involved and regarding the performance of daily activities present within such structures (e.g. carrying out a lesson, a surgical procedure). The main aim of our tool is to highlight the impact of the noise generated by the construction site activities on these daily activities and to allow the simulation in real time of the viable solutions, thus arriving to find the one that is considered most suitable.

summary Architecture is the mediator between the Environment and Humans. Nature maximal performance and minimal resources creations are Humanity inspiration that led us to exceed structural, material, mechanisms, tools, systems and methods boundaries (Oxman, 2010).Nature are the Architect of the most reliable and sustainable systems. Looking into Nature's lessons, this paper presents a Nature-based design methodology conducted during Kine[SIS]tem'17 Shading Systems International Summer School, held by the ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, Portugal, between 19th - 30th June 2017. The methodology encompasses two main stages, one before and other during the Summer School. From a pre-definition of context constrains, a nature based design strategy, to a planning of the manufacture and construction still during the phase of development of the design, conducted the Summer School participants through a defined biomimetic process that achieved the construction of 1:1 scale prototype.

title User-centered shape grammars for housing transformations: towards post-handover grammars

summary This paper presents a post-handover shape grammar for introducing inhabitants wishes in the transformation of individual houses of the Malagueira housing complex by Álvaro Siza Vieira in Évora, Portugal. The presented research includes a case study developed in the context of the workshop Gramática da Forma em estudos de habitação - análise, geração e customização at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In this paper we present the first developments of the Malagueira transformation grammar, including corpus of analysis, shape rules, and derivations, and we discuss the opportunities that shape grammar brings to user-centered design.

summary The present article describes the construction of a system that combines parametric modeling strategies and genetic algorithms for optimization. By means of the reformulation of the Darwinian evolutionary process, it is sought to systematize a project process that allows the architect to act in the parameterization of the problems, beyond the mere formal proposition of solutions, in favor of the exploration of a greater variety of projective possibilities than would be possible using traditional design methods.

summary This article presents a literature review on the relationship between urban design and travel demand, and systematically maps existing studies in generative, parametric and procedural urban modeling that have approached the subject. The methods used in these papers are discussed, and the computational tools described in them are analyzed to identify how they can be used to support the design process for retrofitting urban streets. The findings are used to identify what further developments are needed in order to allow for visualizing the impact of design decisions on modal share.

summary This project reflects about the use of the term constructive geometry, based on the development of a case study. Even if we posses the digital tools and processes to develop a design, it is not so clear how to combine the generation and the necessary tools to materialize it. To find form we rely on algorithmic generation unfolding this term with digital fabrication, to include material and techniques feedback. Constructive geometry looks for an inclusive computational design to integrate generation and fabrication. This process is tested and documented in the development of a studentl graduation project.

title Geodesign: A metametodology in the teaching of the project process in the School of Architecture and Urbanism of the UFPE

summary In 2001, discussions began on the elaboration of a new Pedagogical Project (PPC) for the School of Architecture and Urbanism (CAU) of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), but only in 2010 a proposal was presented utilizing new didactic-pedagogical concepts and dynamics. After eight years of its implementation, and without a formal evaluation, it was verified the lack of a methodology that manages the teaching process according to the principles formulated in the PPC2010. This article consists of the analysis of the teaching of the CAU /UFPE design process. It also contains a proposal`s presentation to update the curricular structure through the meta-methodology of Geodesign. The proposal strives for a better flow of information, integration and contextualization of contents.

summary The "Virtual Paths: Collaborations in Narratives of Cultural Heritage of São Carlos" Extension Project sought to analyze the use of the QR Code, which directs the user to an online portal containing information about historical buildings in São Carlos, to complement the dissemination of the city's cultural heritage. As a pilot case, during the year of research, QR Codes were developed for the São Carlos Railway Station. This process seeks to diversify the dissemination of information on heritage and promote greater engagement of the local community, as an invitation to an augmented tour through the monuments of the city.
