title Printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic Multi-Bias Additive Manufacturing

summary A research team at Florida International University Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab has developed a novel method for 3d-printing curved open grid core sandwich structures using a thermoplastic extruder mounted on a robotic arm. This print-on-print additive manufacturing (AM) method relies on the 3d modeling software Rhinoceros and its parametric software plugin Grasshopper with Kuka-Parametric Robotic Control (Kuka-PRC) to convert NURBS surfaces into multi-bias additive manufacturing (MBAM) toolpaths. While several high-profile projects including the University of Stuttgart ICD/ITKE Research Pavilions 2014–15 and 2016–17, ETH-Digital Building Technologies project Levis Ergon Chair 2018, and 3D printed chair using Robotic Hybrid Manufacturing at Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) 2019, have previously demonstrated the feasibility of 3d printing with either MBAM or sandwich structures, this method for printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic MBAM combines these methods offering the possibility to significantly reduce the weight of spanning or cantilevered surfaces by incorporating the structural logic of open grid-core sandwiches with MBAM toolpath printing. Often built with fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), sandwich structures are a common solution for thin wall construction of compound curved surfaces that require a high strength-to-weight ratio with applications including aerospace, wind energy, marine, automotive, transportation infrastructure, architecture, furniture, and sports equipment manufacturing. Typical practices for producing sandwich structures are labor intensive, involving a multi-stage process including (1) the design and fabrication of a mould, (2) the application of a surface substrate such as FRP, (3) the manual application of a light-weight grid-core material, and (4) application of a second surface substrate to complete the sandwich. There are several shortcomings to this moulded manufacturing method that affect both the formal outcome and the manufacturing process: moulds are often costly and labor intensive to build, formal geometric freedom is limited by the minimum draft angles required for successful removal from the mould, and customization and refinement of product lines can be limited by the need for moulds. While the most common material for this construction method is FRP, our proof-of-concept experiments relied on low-cost thermoplastic using a specially configured pellet extruder. While the method proved feasible for small representative examples there remain significant challenges to the successful deployment of this manufacturing method at larger scales that can only be addressed with additional research. The digital workflow includes the following steps: (1) Create a 3D digital model of the base surface in Rhino, (2) Generate toolpaths for laminar printing in Grasshopper by converting surfaces into lists of oriented points, (3) Generate the structural grid-core using the same process, (4) Orient the robot to align in the direction of the substructure geometric planes, (5) Print the grid core using MBAM toolpaths, (6) Repeat step 1 and 2 for printing the outer surface with appropriate adjustments to the extruder orientation. During the design and printing process, we encountered several challenges including selecting geometry suitable for testing, extruder orientation, calibration of the hot end and extrusion/movement speeds, and deviation between the computer model and the physical object on the build platen. Physical models varied from their digital counterparts by several millimeters due to material deformation in the extrusion and cooling process. Real-time deviation verification studies will likely improve the workflow in future studies.

summary According to one of the Sustainable Development Goals (UN, 2018), it is important for cities to be inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Therefore, it is necessary to prioritize pedestrians and promote active mobility, giving them priority and encouraging walking, as presented in the concepts of TOD (Transit-Oriented Development). Although the master plan suggests that areas located in the regional centrality of Belo Horizonte are enhancing active mobility, residents may still need to use individual or public transportation due to long distances when accessing basic services on foot. In peripheral areas of the city of Belo Horizonte, are there favorable walkability conditions for the residents? Thus, the aim of this research is to use digital technologies to investigate, through a parametric performative model, the quality of the existing routes, with a focus on the peripheral areas of the city. Based on the results obtained, it will be possible to conclude whether there are discrepancies between what is presented in the master plan and, ultimately, to identify potential solutions for the area based on metrics that qualify and enhance active mobility. These solutions may vary according to the specific needs of the location.

summary We will characterize the relationship between Internet of Things (IOT) and Virtual Reality (VR) as the tension between analog and digital domains, organized by several interfaces specifically developed for this study, during de course Interactive Architecture at the Architecture School - UFMG. These interfaces, referred here as programmable meta-objects (MOPs), recombine themselves to form an environment where inputs and outputs of each MOP are made available to other networked MOPs through the Hydra System (!). These MOPs can have both a physical existence (object present in physical space) and a "virtual" existence (it exists in the Virtual Reality environment).

summary The analysis of make-belief drawings and models of Sci-Fi spaceships and architecture, leaves architects usually in absence of interior, material or program information. The spatial depth of sci-fi digital or physical models is virtually non-existent and unresolved. This discrepancy within sci-fi scenarios inspired the development of an integrated teaching methodology within design studios, with the academic objective to utilize computational methods for analysis, reproduction and eventually composition, while assessing its capacity to achieve a successful assimilation of design computation in the curriculum. The Spaceship Architecture Design Studio at University of Innsbruck's Institute for Experimental Architecture.hochbau follows a procedural approach in which the design objective is not predefined. Yet, it aims to be 'outside of this world' as a sci-fi architectural quality-enriched result of our reality, via a design oriented course with immersive computational strategies.

summary By 2050 an estimated 70 percent of the world's population will live in megacities with more than 10 million citizens (Renner 2018). This growth calls for new target-oriented, interdisciplinary methods in urban planning and design in cities to meet sustainable development targets. In response, this paper exemplifies an integrated urban design process on a master plan project in Vienna. The objective is to investigate the potential towards a holistic, digital, urban design process aimed at the development of a practical methodology for future designs. The presented urban design process includes analyses and simulation tools within Rhinoceros 3D and its plug-in Grasshopper as quality-enhancing mediums that facilitate the creative approaches in the course of the project. The increase in efficiency and variety of design variants shows a promising future for the practical suitability of this approach.

summary While the original Nine Square Grid problem, developed by John Hejduk and other influential educators, has shown many time-tested strengths; the value of the foundation studio project relies strongly on repetition and iteration. This activity oftentimes can be tedious when executed using traditional media. To expand upon the pedagogical goals of the original Nine Square Grid problem,we developed a virtual reality tool titled 'Nine Cube VR.' This tool expands upon the pedagogical goals of the original Nine Square Grid problem. Our tool takes advantage of immersive technology and its capacity to maximize object and spatial presence to aid in teaching beginning design students. Using the Unity game engine for development, zSpace Virtual/Augmented Reality desktop monitor and the HTC Vive head-mounted display, we created a multi-platform, easy-to-use kit-of-parts to educate beginning design students in architecture and interior design foundation design concepts.

summary Architecture, like other practice-oriented schools, aims to teach skills and knowledge required in professional practice. The aspired architecture profession increasingly requires practitioners who are able to work in collaborative BIM environments. This creates a task for education to develop new ways of teaching BIM concepts and tools to prepare the next generations of students who will enter the work force. To address this need, this study developed a methodology for learning BIM in architecture education by establishing relationship between practice and education. As substantial part of methodology development process, this paper will present the ongoing research that focuses on collaborative teaching process between AE practitioners and teachers. The benefits and challenges of this process will be presented and discussed.

summary Parametric modelling is a very trending topic in the Architecture Engineering and Construction industry. There is an ever-growing challenge in the industry about how it is possible to document freeform and very design-oriented projects (created in Rhinoceros) in BIM. The ultimate goal of architectural and design projects is to be able to realize the building based on the 2D documentation. Currently Rhinoceros and Grasshopper are the industry-leading algorithmic solutions in the AEC industry. To complement such workflows, GRAPHISOFT developed a live connection between Grasshopper and ARCHICAD in order to generate BIM models, directly from the Visual Programming Interface (Grasshopper) and bridge the gap between the freeform, conceptual- and the BIM worlds.

summary Advances in autonomous control of object-scale robots, both anthropomorphic and vehicular, are posing new human–machine interface challenges. In architecture, very few examples of autonomous inhabitable robotic architecture exist. A number of factors likely contribute to this condition, among them the scale and cost of architectural adaptive systems, but on a more fundamental conceptual level also the questions of how architectural robots would communicate with their human inhabitants. The Flexing Room installation is a room-sized actuated active-bending skeleton structure. It uses rudimentary social feedback by counting people to inform its behavior in the form of actuated poses of the room enclosure. An operational full-scale prototype was constructed and tested. To operate it no geometric-based simulation was used; the only communication between computer and structure was in sending values for the air pressure settings and in gathering sensor feedback. The structure’s physical state was resolved through the embodied computation of its interconnected parts, and the people-counting sensor feedback influences its next action. Future work will explore the development of learning processes to improve the human–machine coexistence in space.

summary Well known metaphors play an explanatory role in human-computer interaction (HCI) and support users in understanding an unfamiliar object with references to a familiar object, for example the desktop metaphor. Metaphors can also support designers in forming and exploring new concepts during the process of designing. We present metaphors that establish user expectations and provide guidance for new design concepts while integrating interactive technology in buildings to enable human-building interaction (HBI). HBI is a research area that studies how HCI research and practice provides opportunities for interactive buildings. Interactive experiences in architecture can be characterized by three metaphorical concepts: HBI as Device (user-centered view), HBI as Robot (building-centered view), and HBI as Friend (activity centered-view). These metaphors provide a tool for architects and HBI designers to explore designs that engage occupants' existing mental models from previous HCI experiences. We expand on each metaphor using analogical reasoning to define exploratory design spaces for HBI.

summary This research explores the combination of two different types of algorithms that have so far been treated separately in architectural computational design: recursive subdivision, and differential or cellular growth. The two algorithms appear to act in opposite directions, the first is a refinement going inwards while the latter is growing outwards. However, both algorithms are based on the refinement of mesh geometries by inserting new vertices and faces and can be used in combination. The resulting subdivisional growth can be used to enhance specific geometric traits of either recursive subdivision or cellular growth at different scales or in different sections of the design object. The resulting geometries have been explored through case studies that utilize those possibilities.

summary The article focuses on the development of a diagrammatic method of design processes based on the elaboration of conceptual matrices that embrace the reading of some of Zaha Hadid 's design projects. The object of study is approached through its formative process, considering its continuous evolution, in a dynamic field of interactions and mediations. The architectural works studied, generated several diagrams through the research of their 'formative concepts' (Clark & Pause)i, later defined, as 'operative categories'. The definition follows the understanding of the architect's work as non-linear sequences of projective actions. The project`s study, found similar strategies, which are generated as projective series, through similar spatial expressions and methods of conception.

summary Design education usually takes place in a studio setting, in which visual and spatial artefacts are produced, shared, improved, presented and commented. This specific setting comes with qualitative properties that allow for situated learning with object-oriented focus and interaction, combined with a rich collegial context in which ideas can flourish and certain values and ethics are cherished. Using our education platform for online learning, we noticed the lack of support for typical creative and social design studio aspects, while factual classroom education was well supported. This paper describes how we attempt to translate the qualities of the studio education setting into an online environment for design education. Our approach is not to build a Virtual Design Studio (VDS) from the bottom up, but instead, to build on top of our universities' online education platform of choice. The paper commences with a short description of design education in a studio setting. Then a number of basic principles of design studio education is applied to the development of two Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). In the last section we discuss the different setups and compare the online aspects with on campus design studio education.

summary From the invention of projection to the emergence of digital technology, there's a clear correspondences among the transformations of visual representation paradigm in art, the developments of design instrument in architecture, and the human perception of time/space. Base on the examination of this particular historical trajectory, this paper focuses the working mechanism of shifting perspective as an alternative design instrument to explore the possibility of embedding time and motion into static form in digital age. Firstly, the paper reviews how the shifting perspective was introduced to represent space in modern western painting and photography. Then based on the research on shifting perspective, the paper develops a design tool, which would be able to translate motion into the particular geometrical feature of a generated 3D object. In the end, the paper brings further discussions about the formal and spatial effects brought by this new tool, and its potential to incorporate the perceptive image of human being into design process.

summary Low-cost programmable materials such as wood have been utilized to replace mechanical actuators of adaptive architectural skins. Although research investigated ways to understand the hygroscopic response of wood to variations in humidity levels, there are still no clear methods developed to track and analyze such response. This paper introduces a computational method to analyze, track and store the hygroscopic response of wood through image analysis and continuous tracking of angular measurements in relation to time. This is done through a computational closed loop that links the smart material interface (SMI) representing hygroscopic response with a digital and tangible interface comprising a Flex sensor, Arduino kit, and FireFly plugin. Results show no significant difference between the proposed sensing mechanism and conventional image analysis tracking systems. Using the described method, acquiring real-time data can be utilized to develop learning mechanisms and predict the controlled motion of programmable material for adaptive architectural skins.

summary Several research projects (Gramazio et al. 2014; Willmann et al. 2015; Helm et al. 2017; Adel et al. 2018; Adel Ahmadian 2020) have investigated the use of automated assembly technologies (e.g., industrial robotic arms) for the fabrication of nonstandard timber structures. Building on these projects, we present a novel and transferable process for the robotic fabrication of bespoke timber subassemblies made of off-the-shelf standard timber elements. A nonstandard timber structure (Figure 2), consisting of four bespoke subassemblies: three vertical supports and a Zollinger (Allen 1999) roof structure, acts as the case study for the research and validates the feasibility of the proposed process.

summary This paper presents methods for designing nonstandard timber frame structures, which are enabled by cooperative multi-robotic fabrication at building-scale. In comparison to the current use of automated systems in the timber industry for the fabrication of plate-like timber frame components, this research relies on the ability of robotic arms to spatially assemble timber beams into bespoke timber frame modules. This paper investigates the following topics: 1) A suitable constructive system facilitating a just-in-time robotic fabrication process. 2) A set of assembly techniques enabling cooperative multi-robotic spatial assembly of bespoke timber frame modules, which rely on a man-machine collaborative scenario. 3) A computational design process, which integrates architectural requirements, fabrication constraints, and assembly logic. 4) Implementation of the research in the design and construction of a multi-story building, which validates the developed methods and highlights the architectural implications of this approach.
