summary This research presents a novel construction method that links robotic assembly and in place 3D printing. Rather than producing custom joints in a separate prefabrication process, our approach enables creating highly customized connection details that are 3D printed directly onto off-the-shelf building members during their assembly process. Challenging the current fashion of highly predetermined joints in digital construction, detailing in place offers an adaptive fabrication method, enabling the expressive tailoring of connection details addressing its specific architectural conditions. In the present research, the in place detailing strategy is explored through robotic wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), a metal 3D printing technique based on MIG welding. The robotic WAAM process coupled with localization and path-planning strategies allows a local control of the detail geometry enabling the fabrication of customized welded connections that can compensate material and construction tolerances. The paper outlines the potential of 3D printing in place details, describes methods and techniques to realize them and shows experimental results that validate the approach.

title Artificial intelligence in architecture: Generating conceptual design via deep learning

summary Artificial intelligence, and in particular machine learning, is a fast-emerging field. Research on artificial intelligence focuses mainly on image-, text- and voice-based applications, leading to breakthrough developments in self-driving cars, voice recognition algorithms and recommendation systems. In this article, we present the research of an alternative graph- based machine learning system that deals with three-dimensional space, which is more structured and combinatorial than images, text or voice. Specifically, we present a function-driven deep learning approach to generate conceptual design. We trained and used deep neural networks to evaluate existing designs encoded as graphs, extract significant building blocks as subgraphs and merge them into new compositions. Finally, we explored the application of generative adversarial networks to generate entirely new and unique designs.

summary Stringent requirements of efficiency and sustainability lead to the demand for buildings that have good performance regarding different criteria, such as cost, lighting, thermal, and structural, among others. Optimization can be used to ensure that such requirements are met. In order to optimize a design, it is necessary to generate different variations of the design, and to evaluate each variation regarding the intended criteria. Currently available design and evaluation tools often demand manual and time-consuming interventions, thus limiting design variations, and causing architects to completely avoid optimization or to postpone it to later stages of the design, when its benefits are diminished. To address these limitations, we propose Algorithmic Optimization, an algorithmic-based approach that combines an algorithmic description of building designs with automated simulation processes and with optimization processes. We test our approach on a daylighting optimization case study and we benchmark different optimization methods. Our results show that the proposed workflow allows to exclude manual interventions from the optimization process, thus enabling its automation. Moreover, the proposed workflow is able to support the architect in the choice of the optimization method, as it enables him to easily switch between different optimization methods.

summary We question the recent practices of conventional and participatory urban design approaches and offer a middle approach by exploring computational design tools in the design system. On the one hand, the top-down urban planning approaches investigate urban form as a holistic matter which only can be calibrated by urban professionals. These approaches are not able to offer enough information to the end users to predict the urban form. On the other hand, the bottom-up urban design approaches cannot visualise predicted urban scenarios, and most often the design decisions stay as general assumptions. We developed and tested a parametric design platform combines both approaches where all the stakeholders can participate and visualise multiple urban scenarios in real-time feedback. Parametric design along with CIM modelling system has influenced urban designers for a new endeavour in urban design. This paper presents a methodology to generate and visualise urban form. We present a novel decision-making platform that combines city level and local neighbourhood data to aid participatory urban design decisions. The platform allows for stakeholder collaboration and engagement in complex urban design processes.

summary Urban water systems need to be dimensioned well to be economical and distribute water in a good quality to all consumers. Their pipe sizes are dependent on demand and location of consuming nodes. Within uncertain development of cities, planning sustainable hydraulic networks is challenging. This paper explores, how the definition of urban design parameters can be supported using parametric urban design models and computational water network analysis. For the latter we developed new components for Grasshopper based on the open accessible water analysis tool EPANET. In two example cases we demonstrate potential applications of this tool for water-sensitive planning of emerging cities to find optimal positions for water sources or pipe diameters. In subsequent research, this could be used to derive probability-based recommendations for the dimensioning of a water network within uncertain growth.

summary This work develops, implement and test a method and model for the distribution of material in relation to thermal performances through robot based extrusion of concrete. The aim is to suggest a way for architecture to use advanced fabrication techniques towards environmental passive strategies, which potentially decrease a buildings operative energy budget, while creating articulated thermal sensations for humans. Through computational, material and design explorations, by prototypes and a final demonstrator, the work proposes how thermal mass can be organized both in terms of its robot based successive fabrication based layering and as an approach to generate an assembly of thermal based building blocks into architectural structures.

summary The logics of agent-based behaviors have found interest in architectural design for their possibility to generate self-organizing geometries. However, the resulting free-form geometries are usually complex and costly to construct as buildings. Recently architects have proposed discrete components to create a cost-effective computational designs. This research explores the possibilities of discretizing agent-based simulations to make their bottom-up behaviors and resulting geometries more easily usable for economic construction. Different types of discretization have been explored. The simulations have been evaluated as a design tool at scales from the urban to the detail. The outcomes at the larger scale provide design possibilities, but with little influence on construction costs. At the smaller scale, the geometric assemblies show good possibilities for an economic design and a feasible construction, by altering, but not compromising, the emergent self-organizing principles that guide the simulations.

summary In the following research, a systematic approach is developed to generate an experiment-based performance model that computes and customizes properties of non-uniform linear materials to accommodate the form of designated curve under bending and natural force. In this case, the test subject is an elastomer strip of non-uniform sections. A novel solution is provided to obtain sufficient training data required for deep learning with an automatic material testing mechanism combining robotic arm automation and image recognition. The collected training data are fed into a deep combination of neural networks to generate a material performance model. Unlike most traditional performance models that are only able to simulate the final form from the properties and initial conditions of the given materials, the trained neural network offers a two-way performance model that is also able to compute appropriate material properties of non-uniform materials from target curves. This network achieves complex forms with minimal and effective programmed materials with complicated nonlinear properties and behaving under natural forces.

title A framework for generating and evaluating façade designs using a multi-agent system approach

summary Digital design paradigms in architecture have been rooted in representational models which are geometry centered and therefore fail to capture building complexity holistically. Due to a lack of computational design methodologies, existing digital design workflows do little in predicting design performance in the early design stage and in most cases analysis and design optimization are done after a design is fixed. This work proposes a new computational design methodology, intended for use in the area of conceptual design of building design. The proposed methodology is implemented into a multi-agent system design toolkit which facilitates the generation of design alternatives using stochastic algorithms and their evaluation using multiple environmental performance metrics. The method allows the user to probabilistically explore the solution space by modeling the design parameters’ architectural design components (i.e. façade panel) into modular programming blocks (agents) which interact in a bottom-up fashion. Different problem requirements (i.e. level of daylight inside a space, openings) described into agents’ behavior allow for the coupling of data from different engineering fields (environmental design, structural design) into the a priori formation of architectural geometry. In the presented design experiment, a façade panel is modeled into an agent-based fashion and the multi-agent system toolkit is used to generate and evolve alternative façade panel configurations based on environmental parameters (daylight, energy consumption). The designer can develop the façade panel geometry, design behaviors, and performance criteria to evaluate the design alternatives. The toolkit relies on modular and functionally specific programming modules (agents), which provide a platform for façade design exploration by combining existing three-dimensional modeling and analysis software.

summary We present a computationally-based manufacturing process that allows for variable pattern casting through the use of ferrofluid – a mixture of suspended magnetic nanoparticles in a carrier liquid. The capacity of ferrofluid to form intricate spike and labyrinthine packing structures from ferrohydrodynamic instabilities is well recognized in industry and popular science. In this paper we employ these instabilities as a mold for the direct casting of rigid materials with complex periodic features. Furthermore, using a bitmap-based computational workflow and an array of high-strength neodymium magnets with linear staging, we demonstrate the ability to program the macro-scale pattern formation by modulating the magnetic field density within a single cast. Using this approach, it is possible to program specific patterns in the resulting cast tiles at both the micro- and macro-scale and thus generate tiled arrays with predictable halftone-like image features. We demonstrate the efficacy of this approach for a variety of materials typically used in the architecture, engineering, and construction industries (AEC) including epoxys, ceramics, and cements.

summary Against the background of urbanization and the fast growth of population in big cities, there will be more and more high-rises emerged in the future. In some big cities, the various layers of public transpiration networks such as metro systems also played an essential role in the urban life. In the verticalized urban environment, the complexity of the multi-layers space system connected by various horizontal and vertical connections have been beyond people's cognition. The boundaries between private space and public space, outdoor-space and indoor-space have already blurred. The graph theory based urban spatial analysis approaches are adopted in urban studies to tackle with the urban complexity issues. However, at present, most of the methods proposed are specializing in open urban spaces, and they cannot describe the three-dimensional completely and accurately. Therefore, in this paper, a new graph theory based representation method, the Dynamic Geometric Network Model, which adapted to the verticalized urban environment will be proposed. And the approach of how to automatically generate such a representation model according to the urban layout will also be introduced.

summary The Catoptric Surface research project explores methods of reflecting daylight through a building envelope to form an image-based pattern of light on the interior environment. This research investigates the generation of atmospheric effects from daylighting projected onto architectural surfaces within a built environment in an attempt to amplify or reduce spatial perception. The mapping of variable organizations of light onto existing or new surfaces creates a condition where the perception of space does not rely on form alone. This condition creates a visual effect of a formless atmosphere and affects the way people use the space. Often the desired quantity and quality of daylight varies due to factors such as physiological differences due to age or the types of tasks people perform (Lechner 2009). Yet the dominant mode of thought toward the use of daylighting tends to promote a homogeneous environment, in that the resulting lighting level is the same throughout a space. This research project questions the desire for uniform lighting levels in favor of variegated and heterogeneous conditions. The main objective of this research is the production of a unique facade system that is capable of dynamically redirecting daylight to key locations deep within a building. Mirrors in a vertical array are individually adjusted via stepper motors in order to reflect more or less intense daylight into the interior space according to sun position and an image-based map. The image-based approach provides a way to specifically target lighting conditions, atmospheric effects, and the perception of space.

summary Building energy modeling requires skilled labor, and there is a need to make environmental assessments of buildings more efficient and accessible for architects. A building energy model is based on collecting data from the real, physical world and representing them as a digital model. Recent digital photogrammetry tools can reconstruct real-world geometry by transforming photographs into 3D models automatically. However, there is a lack of accessible workflows that utilize this technology for building energy modeling and simulations. This paper presents a novel methodology to generate a building energy model from a photogrammetry-based 3D model using available tools and computer algorithms.

summary This paper conceptualizes the Auditory space in terms of hearing process by employing the Enactive Approach. In this context, this study aims investigate the spatial awareness and proposes a research methodology to achieve access to the auditory space where places share similar background noise. This methodology consists of two phases: field recording of the pre-determined route first explored by the Spectrogram Sound Analysis (SSA) technique, secondly with the participation of 8 subjects, a survey analysis based on listening to records captured from the predefined route. This research aims to reveal potential use of SSA by relating to survey examination as a new way of reading space.

summary Architectural designers are currently depending on a multitude of elaborate computational tools in order to explore, manipulate and visualize the geometric form of their building projects. However, if architecture can be perceived as the manipulation of geometric form in direct relation to human activities and events that take place inside it, then it is evident that such design parameters are not sufficiently represented in the currently available modeling software. Would it be possible to introduce the human activity element in the aforementioned computational tools in a way that informs the design process and improves the final building product? This paper attempts to answer this question by introducing a new experimental design tool that enables the creation of parametric human activity envelopes within three-dimensional digital models. The novel approach is that this tool enables the parametric interaction of these components with the actual building geometry and generates novel visual and data representations of the 3D model. The goal is to improve the decision-making process of architects as well as their clients by enabling them to evaluate and iterate their designs based not only on the building's form but also on the human spatial events that take place inside it. A prototype implementation demonstrates the tool's practical application through three design examples.

We hypothesize that a system based on this mode of design can bring breakthroughs that could cope with ill-defined problems in urban lighting design. In this sense, by comprehending lighting infrastructures as sociotechnical environments, we believe Metadesign could cope with emergent needs arising in the context of personally meaningful activities andcould empower users to engage actively in their systems development and evolution.

summary Tools and methods used by architects always had an impact on the way building were designed. With the change in design methods and new approaches towards creation process, they became more than ever before crucial elements of the creation process. The automation of architects work has started with computational functions that were introduced to traditional computer-aided design tools. Nowadays architects tend to use specified tools that suit their specific needs. In some cases, they use artificial intelligence. Despite many similarities, they have different advantages and disadvantages. Therefore the change in the design process is more visible and unseen before solution are brought in the discipline. The article presents methods of applying the selected artificial intelligence algorithms: swarm intelligence, neural networks and evolutionary algorithms in the architectural practice by authors. Additionally research shows the methods of analogue data input and output approaches, based on vision and robotics, which in future combined with intelligence based algorithms, might simplify architects everyday practice. Presented techniques allow new spatial solutions to emerge with relatively simple intelligent based algorithms, from which many could be only accomplished with dedicated software. Popularization of the following methods among architects, will result in more intuitive, general use design tools.

Firstly, it will introduce the pursued interest and contribution that visual-ERP EEG based BCI application for Generative Design may provide through a synthetic review of precedents and BCI technology. Secondly, selected BCI components will be described and a methodology will be presented to provide an appropriate framework for a CAAD software approach. This section main focus is on the processing component of the BCI. It distinguishes two key aspects of discrimination and generation in its design and proposes a new model based on GAN for modulated adversarial design. Emphasis will be made on the explicit use of inference loops integrating fast human cognitive responses and its individual capitalisation through time in order to reflect towards the generation of design and architectural features.

summary The collective management of urban environment is a challenging task. Although considering the individuals and their values helps to build environments that are closer to the user's expectations, the identification of these aspects is not an easy task. Considering the potential of exploring visualization tools to support public participation, this paper compares two different 3D tools based on parametric modeling. Reinforcing the relevancy of both methods in promoting the visualization through the process of regulating the urban landscape resulting from the urban parameters, this paper aims to evaluate their performances concerning time consumed, training requirements, results and applicability.

summary The term participation has been used to define different activities, such as civil debate, communication, consultation, delegation, self-help construction, political decisions. However, participation in design started from the idea that individuals whom being affected by a design project must contribute to the design process. Recently, designers have been moving closer to the future users and developing new ways to empower them to get involved in the design process. In this paper we rethink the way the early design process is developed in a participatory approach thanks to parametric methods. A use case is proposed showing the potential of parametric design methods to empower the participation of users in the design of their facilities. The use case is dealing in particular with the spatial planning of an office building where the users together with the spatial planning team are able to design the layout spatial configuration by 1) fixing the objectives, 2) manipulating the model, 3)modifying some parameters, 4) visualizing the iterations and evaluating in a real-time each solution in an interactive 3D environment and together with facility managers 5) choosing the configuration of the spatial layout.
