summary A triple graph grammar approach is adopted as a formal framework for semantic and geometric conversion of IFC models into CityGML Level of Detail 3/4 building models. The triple graph grammar approach supports a semantic mapping from IFC to CityGML, the generation of conversion routines from this mapping, and an incremental approach to achieving a "complete and near-lossless" mapping. The objective of this approach is the development of a methodology and algorithms to automate the conversion of Building Information Models into CityGML building models, capturing both geometric and semantic information as available in the BIM models, in order to create semantically enriched 3D city models that include both exterior and interior structures.

summary A triple graph grammar has been adopted as a formal framework for semantic and geometric conversion of IFC models into CityGML Level of Detail (LoD) 3/4 building models. The advantages of a triple graph grammar approach are threefold: firstly, it allows for the conversion rules to be graphically defined; secondly, the generation of the conversion routines corresponding to these rules can be automated; and, thirdly, a complete mapping can be achieved in an incremental way by adding rule by rule.The objective of this work is the development of a methodology and algorithms to automate the conversion of Building Information Models into CityGML building models, capturing both geometric and semantic information as available in the BIM models, in order to create semantically enriched 3D city models that include both exterior and interior structures such as corridors, rooms, internal doors, and stairs.

keywords The design of tall structures with high slenderness, i.e. width/height ratio, and minimum self-weight, considers in addition to aspects of modularity, constructability and connectivity of the primary members, the static and dynamic behavior of the systems. Assuming constant mass and damping ratio over the height of the building, the structure necessitates respective definition of its stiffness properties, resulting from its configuration, i.e. geometrical stiffness, and the section properties of the members applied, for achieving controlled deformations under horizontal loading. In particular, structural deformation control is traced in the current paper in simplified means through a Finite-Element Analysis of a tall tensegrity structure with overall system dimensions of 12.12/96 m, i.e. 1/7.92 slenderness, developed in three different configurations. Furthermore, a differentiated pretension of the tension-only members of one of the systems has been applied for control of its response behavior. The parametric structural analysis of the tensegrity systems verifies the significant role of the tension-only elements in the system stabilization and horizontal response.

title Printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic Multi-Bias Additive Manufacturing

summary A research team at Florida International University Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab has developed a novel method for 3d-printing curved open grid core sandwich structures using a thermoplastic extruder mounted on a robotic arm. This print-on-print additive manufacturing (AM) method relies on the 3d modeling software Rhinoceros and its parametric software plugin Grasshopper with Kuka-Parametric Robotic Control (Kuka-PRC) to convert NURBS surfaces into multi-bias additive manufacturing (MBAM) toolpaths. While several high-profile projects including the University of Stuttgart ICD/ITKE Research Pavilions 2014–15 and 2016–17, ETH-Digital Building Technologies project Levis Ergon Chair 2018, and 3D printed chair using Robotic Hybrid Manufacturing at Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) 2019, have previously demonstrated the feasibility of 3d printing with either MBAM or sandwich structures, this method for printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic MBAM combines these methods offering the possibility to significantly reduce the weight of spanning or cantilevered surfaces by incorporating the structural logic of open grid-core sandwiches with MBAM toolpath printing. Often built with fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), sandwich structures are a common solution for thin wall construction of compound curved surfaces that require a high strength-to-weight ratio with applications including aerospace, wind energy, marine, automotive, transportation infrastructure, architecture, furniture, and sports equipment manufacturing. Typical practices for producing sandwich structures are labor intensive, involving a multi-stage process including (1) the design and fabrication of a mould, (2) the application of a surface substrate such as FRP, (3) the manual application of a light-weight grid-core material, and (4) application of a second surface substrate to complete the sandwich. There are several shortcomings to this moulded manufacturing method that affect both the formal outcome and the manufacturing process: moulds are often costly and labor intensive to build, formal geometric freedom is limited by the minimum draft angles required for successful removal from the mould, and customization and refinement of product lines can be limited by the need for moulds. While the most common material for this construction method is FRP, our proof-of-concept experiments relied on low-cost thermoplastic using a specially configured pellet extruder. While the method proved feasible for small representative examples there remain significant challenges to the successful deployment of this manufacturing method at larger scales that can only be addressed with additional research. The digital workflow includes the following steps: (1) Create a 3D digital model of the base surface in Rhino, (2) Generate toolpaths for laminar printing in Grasshopper by converting surfaces into lists of oriented points, (3) Generate the structural grid-core using the same process, (4) Orient the robot to align in the direction of the substructure geometric planes, (5) Print the grid core using MBAM toolpaths, (6) Repeat step 1 and 2 for printing the outer surface with appropriate adjustments to the extruder orientation. During the design and printing process, we encountered several challenges including selecting geometry suitable for testing, extruder orientation, calibration of the hot end and extrusion/movement speeds, and deviation between the computer model and the physical object on the build platen. Physical models varied from their digital counterparts by several millimeters due to material deformation in the extrusion and cooling process. Real-time deviation verification studies will likely improve the workflow in future studies.

summary This article presents a specific description and findings in teaching architectural computing using 3D modeling software at the undergraduate level of Interior Design Studies (second academic year). This paper is mainly concerned with the analysis of issues and advantages resulting from teaching design through the "modeling first" in the overall design practice. By "the reversed 'in steps' design procedure" we recognize the design process encompassing the idea of "form first".We introduce BIM based modeling to Interior Design students at the undergraduate level through "in steps" procedure, which is the opposite to typical CAD procedures. With 3D model based method, the beginning of the design process by making the abstract, conceptual designs, and later translating it into design solutions are made possible. The use of BIM technology not only gives architecture, engineering, and construction professions tools to more efficient collaboration but also provides inventors such as architects with complete and integrated tools for the entire design development.

summary The research presented here investigates an approach to FDM Freeform 3D printing that fully utilizes simultaneous x, y, z axis movement for the production of designed artefacts. Most Freeform printing techniques create bands of space frame type structures, often defined by structural pursuits. Here, a Form Responsive Method is used, which exploits the design opportunities of synchronized three-dimensional movement depositing extrudate in patterns of lines and curves that embrace functional, aesthetic and tectonic qualities, all influenced by an industrial design perspective. The system allows the designer complete control of the pattern and deposition of the material in relation to the printed artefact. The form and details are designed concurrently by direct manipulation of the toolpath whilst considering material deposition and structural integrity. This method of working requires intimate understanding and control of both software and hardware to craft the artefact to the desired design. Different aspects of the technique and challenges are described and discussed through a range of artefacts of different scales from utensils to furniture items.

summary This paper describes a novel method for reconstructing urban environments based on individual occupant experience. The method relies on a low-cost off-the-shelf 360-degree camera to capture video and audio data from a natural walk through the city. It then uses a custom workflow based on an open-source Structure from Motion (SfM) library to reconstruct a dense point cloud from images extracted from the 360-degree video. The point cloud and audio data are then represented within a virtual reality (VR) model, creating a multisensory environment that immerses the viewer into the subjective experience of the occupant.

This work questions the role of precision and fidelity in our experience and representation of a “real” physical environment. On the one hand, the resulting VR environment is less complete and has lower fidelity than digital environments created through traditional modeling and rendering workflows. On the other hand, because each point in the point cloud is literally sampled from the actual environment, the resulting model also captures more of the noise and imprecision that characterizes our world. The result is an uncanny immersive experience that is less precise than traditional digital environments, yet represents many more of the unique physical characteristics that define our urban experiences.

summary With recent advancements in VR (Virtual Reality) technology in the past year, it has emerged as a new paradigm in visualization and immersive HMI (Human-machine Interface). On the other hand, in the past decades, BIM (Building Information Modelling) has emerged as the new standard of implementing construction projects and is quickly becoming a norm than just a co-ordination tool in the AEC industry.Visualization of the digital data in BIM plays an important role as it is the primary communication medium to the project participants, where VR can offer a new dimension of experiencing BIM and improving the collaboration of various stakeholders of a project. There are both open source and commercial solutions to extend visualization of a BIM project in VR, but so far, there are no complete solutions that offer a pure IFC format based solution, which makes the VR integration vendor neutral. This work endeavors to develop a concept for a vendor-neutral BIM-VR integration with bi-directional data exchange in order to extend VR as a collaboration tool than a mere visualization tool in the BIM ecosystem.

summary Part of our research and teaching agenda at the School of Architecture of the Technical University of Crete focuses on algorithmic design with parametric models, its methodological characteristics and the study of applied and theoretical work that defined this architectural design thinking. Our work challenges architectural design processes, through the systematic study of parametric models. This paper presents three projects from the undergraduate elective course "Special Topics in Architectural Design", which took place during the spring semester of 2017, that investigated parametric models for a given architectural problem, inspired, to some extent, by precedents in 20th century architecture where students traced algorithmic design thinking. Although students understood well the concept and function of parametric models and in many cases applied them successfully for their design objectives, several of them did not fully assimilate some critical aspects of computation. This allowed us to determine areas of improvement and points of complete reevaluation in our educational strategy approach.

summary This paper questions the ideal digital paradigm of its applicability for non-standard architectural practice in China. Streamlined multi-disciplinary cooperation may constrain when facing a challenging construction context which notorious for its high speed, lack of craftsmanship, low budgets, and poor detailing. Living with this, however, a group of digital practitioners has successfully been able to complete several non-standard architectural projects with a complex form. An argument raises suggesting an essential part of their success lies in their alternative use of typical parametric models, which are adapted to create tolerance space between design, development, and implementation process in response to local challenges. Here, we study two non-standard cases from Chinese architectural practice HHDFUN. By analysing the project delivery processes, this paper ambitious to extract higher-level knowledge that will contribute to the professional practice and facilitate the extension of an expanded, yet purely digital design solution space into the challenging material world of local construction.

summary 3D Geographic Information Systems (3D GIS) are systems capable of performing spatial analyzes that consider a three-dimensional representation of objects, through their planialtimetric coordinates. City Geography Markup Language (CityGML) is used for city and urban applications. The main challenges for this system implementation refer to the techniques used to obtain data, and their formats, in addition to the various software used in geometric modeling. In this way, this article aims to discuss geometric modeling for a university campus using airborne laser scanning data, aiming at the creation of database for applications development.

summary Existing buildings are often lacking BIM models. This paper proposes a method to semi-automate the generation of BIM models from 2D CAD drawings. The method has two parts: the first part, 2D CAD drawing preparation, involves cleaning the drawings to obtain simplified 2D input geometry and the second, 3D BIM model generation, involves generating and extracting parameters to generate 3D BIM components. This research focuses on the semi-automation of the second part. The the model is generated storey by storey, with each building element type being processed. A demonstration was carried out for a case-study building. The main modelling strategies used by the method are described and key challenges are discussed.

summary Emerging technologies that use data have contributed to the success of communication all over the world. Social media and gaming industries have already taken advantage of the web to provide synchronous communication and updated information. Conversely, existing methods of communication within the AEC industry require multiple platforms, such as emails and file sharing services in conjunction with 3D Modelling software, to inform changes made by stakeholders, resulting in file duplication and limited accessibility to the latest version, while augmenting existing practice's inefficiency. As communication is critical to the success of a project and should be enhanced, Redback BIM promises to establish a workflow for a dynamic platform, while achieving similar results to that of a 3D modelling program hosted on the web. Using existing open-source web development software, multiple users will be able to collaboratively organise and synchronise changes made to the design scheme in real-time. Features such as this would enable more fluid communication between multiple stakeholders within the life of a project.

summary In the next 25 years, the elderly population will increase on average to 65 thousand people annually in Chile (INE, 2018). Their independent living is jeopardized partially for diminished visual capacity that difficult spatial perception. Although light does not correct vision impairment, adequate light levels can respond to the needs of older people as preventing visual errors. This study evaluates daylighting availability in an assisting living residence in a southern city in Chile. A quantitative approach resulted in the identification of envelope-retrofit strategies that allow achieving recommended levels of natural lighting, particularly in shared spaces where residents spend most of the day. The results show that it would be possible to achieve better light availability, as it also allows for a better understanding of the contributions of the building envelope. Finally, the study outlines recommendations for future retrofits that meet requirements for visual comfort for a growing senior population.

summary This paper aims to study the potential impact of Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Realities (VAM) technologies on the built environment and to understand how immersive environments can be used to enhance the human experience within the built environment. In order to investigate and test how these technologies may improve our experience of the city, an augmented reality app is being developed in partnership with Victoria University of Wellington, the Wellington City Council and NEC, New Zealand. The research aims to explore ways in which VAM helps users in exploring cities. The philosophical driver of this project aims to focus on supporting the experience of moving between two points on a map rather than achieving the shortest route to a destination. Once developed, the project proposes the CityAR app which is to be distributed to the general public in order for them to test its functionality and in return, provide user feedback.

summary We present a proof of concept implementation of an integration strategy for connecting CAD with Blockchain. We explain the components of most blockchains and the value they bring to the built environment ecosystem, the potential impact a complete integration might have and we demonstrate the first two of four levels of integration we have identified between CAD and blockchain technologies. For the purposes of the paper we use Rhino / Grasshopper and Ethereum as the two components of integration.

summary This paper presents HIVE, a new open source design toolbox, which focuses on teaching concepts of Energy and Climate Systems integration in buildings. .The aim is to empower architecture students to integrate aspects of energy efficiency during the architectural design process. The tool employs a simplified input format designed for ease of use and provides almost instantaneous, direct feedback to support students of all experience levels in the early, conceptual building design stages, where numerous iterations need to be conducted efficiently within a short period of time.The project aims to create a robust toolbox that will become an innovative reference in architecture and engineering - lectures, design studios, and project-based learning - through its capacity to quickly, and effectively, translate building energy systems concepts into graphic formats central to building design teaching and practice. The fast feedback that the users receive to their design parameters changes will enable an effective and quick build-up of tacit knowledge about building energy systems, complementary to the explicit, theoretical knowledge that is usually taught in courses, thus creating a more complete learning experience.

title Shaping hybrids – Form finding of new material systems

summary Form-finding processes are an integral part of structural design. Because of their limitations, the classic approaches to finding a form – such as hanging models and the soap-film analogy – play only a minor role. The various possibilities of digital experimentation in the context of structural optimisation create new options for the designer generating forms, while enabling control over a wide variety of parameters. A complete mapping of the mechanical properties of a structure in a continuum mechanics model is possible but so are simplified modelling strategies which take into account only the most important properties of the structure, such as iteratively approximating to a solution via representations of kinematic states. Form finding is thus an extremely complex process, determined both by the freely selected parameters and by design decisions.

summary To assess an environmental design, augmented and diminished reality (AR/DR) have a potential to build a consensus more smoothly through the landscape simulation of new design visualization of the items to be assessed, such as the green view index. However, the current system is still considered to be impractical because it does not provide complete user experience. Thus, we aim to improve the robustness of the AR/DR system and to integrate the estimation of the green view index into the AR/DR system on a game engine. Further, we achieve an improved stable tracking by eliminating the outliers of the tracking reference points using the random sample consensus (RANSAC) method and by defining the tracking reference points over an extensive area of the AR/DR display. Additionally, two modules were implemented, among which one module is used to solve the occlusion problem while the other is used to estimate the green view index. The novel integrated AR/DR system with all modules was developed on the game engine. A mock design project was developed in an outdoor environment for simulation purposes, thereby verifying the applicability of the developed system.
