summary This research presents a novel construction method that links robotic assembly and in place 3D printing. Rather than producing custom joints in a separate prefabrication process, our approach enables creating highly customized connection details that are 3D printed directly onto off-the-shelf building members during their assembly process. Challenging the current fashion of highly predetermined joints in digital construction, detailing in place offers an adaptive fabrication method, enabling the expressive tailoring of connection details addressing its specific architectural conditions. In the present research, the in place detailing strategy is explored through robotic wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), a metal 3D printing technique based on MIG welding. The robotic WAAM process coupled with localization and path-planning strategies allows a local control of the detail geometry enabling the fabrication of customized welded connections that can compensate material and construction tolerances. The paper outlines the potential of 3D printing in place details, describes methods and techniques to realize them and shows experimental results that validate the approach.

summary Additive manufacturing processes are typically based on a horizontal discretization of solid geometry and layered deposition of materials, the speed and the rate of which are constant and determined by the stability criteria. New methods are being developed to enable three-dimensional printing of complex self-supporting lattices, expanding the range of possible outcomes in additive manufacturing. However, these processes introduce an increased degree of formal and material uncertainty, which require the development of solutions specific to each medium. This paper describes a development to the 3D printing methodology for clay, incorporating a closed-loop feedback system of material surveying and self-correction to recompute new depositions based on scanned local deviations from the digital model. This Responsive Spatial Print (RSP) method provides several improvements over the Spatial Print Trajectory (SPT) methodology for clay 3D printing of spatial lattices previously developed by the authors. This process compensates for the uncertain material behavior of clay due to its viscosity, malleability, and deflection through constant model recalibration, and it increases the predictability and the possible scale of spatial 3D prints through real-time material-informed toolpath generation. The RSP methodology and early successful results are presented along with new challenges to be addressed due to the increased scale of the possible outcomes.

summary Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecologies in the marine world. They are the habitat to tens of thousands of different marine species. However, these wildlife environments are endangered across the globe. Recent research estimates that around 75 percent of the remaining coral reefs are currently under threat. In 2018 after a devastating storm, Hong Kong lost around 80% of its existing corals. Consequently, a team consisting of marine biologists and architects at The University of Hong Kong has developed a series of performative structures that have been deployed in the city's waters in July 2020, intending to aid new coral growth over the coming years. The project was commissioned by the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation Department (AFCD) and is part of an ongoing active management measure for coral restoration in Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park in Hong Kong. The following objectives were defined as part of the design and fabrication research of the project. To develop a design strategy that builds on the concept of biomimicry to allow for complex spaces to occur that would provide attributes against the detachment of the inserted coral fragment, hence could enhance a diverse marine life specific to the context of the cities water conditions. To generate an efficient printing path that accommodates the specific morphological design criteria and ensures structural integrity and the functional aspects of the design. To develop an efficient fabrication process with a DIW 3D printing methodology that considers warping, shrinkage, and cracking in the clay material. The research team developed a method that combined an algorithmic design approach for the design of different geometries with a digital additive manufacturing process utilizing robotic 3D clay printing. The overall fabrication strategy for the complex and large pieces sought to ensure structural longevity, optimize production time, and tackle the involved double-sided printing method. Overall, 128 tiles were printed, covering roughly 40sqm of the seabed.

summary This paper presents a computational design approach and novel digital fabrication method for an optimized lightweight concrete slab using a 3D-printed formwork. Smart Slab is the first concrete slab fabricated with a 3D-printed formwork. It is a lightweight concrete slab, displaying three-dimensional geometric differentiation on multiple scales. The optimization of slab systems can have a large impact on buildings: more compact slabs allow for more usable space within the same building volume, refined structural concepts allow for material reduction, and integrated prefabrication can reduce complexity on the construction site. Among the main challenges is that optimized slab geometries are difficult to fabricate in a conventional way because non-standard formworks are very costly. Novel digital fabrication methods such as additive manufacturing of concrete can provide a solution, but until now the material properties and the surface quality only allow for limited applications. The fabrication approach presented here therefore combines the geometric freedom of 3D binderjet printing of formworks with the structural performance of fiber reinforced concrete. Using 3D printing to fabricate sand formwork for concrete, enables the prefabrication of custom concrete slab elements with complex geometric features with great precision. In addition, space for building systems such as sprinklers and Lighting could be integrated in a compact way. The design of the slab is based on a holistic computational model which allows fast design optimization and adaptation, the integration of the planning of the building systems, and the coordination of the multiple fabrication processes involved with an export of all fabrication data. This paper describes the context, design drivers, and digital design process behind the Smart Slab, and then discusses the digital fabrication system used to produce it, focusing on the 3D-printed formwork. It shows that 3D printing is already an attractive alternative for custom formwork solutions, especially when strategically combined with other CNC fabrication methods. Note that smart slab is under construction and images of finished elements can be integrated within couple of weeks.

summary This paper presents intermediate results of an experimental research directed towards development of a method to use additive manufacturing technology as a generative agent in architectural design process. The primary technique is to variate speed of material deposition of a 3D printer in order to produce undetermined textural effects. These effects demonstrate local variation of material distribution, which is treated as a consequence of interaction between machining parameters and material properties. Current stage of inquiry is concerned with studying material agency by using two different materials as variables in the same experimental setup. The results suggest potential benefits for mass-customized fabrication and deeper understanding of how different materials can be employed in the same manufacturing system to achieve a range of effective behaviors.

summary Concrete is undoubtedly the most employed material in constructions. In principle it allows to build complex architecture, where form can be for the realization of complex shapes. However, the biggest limitation of its use is explained by the demanding process needed to create free-form casts, it often limits its potential to obvious geometries. With the aim of overcoming current limitations, this paper explores the use of additive manufacturing to create formworks for concrete elements. The case study of a complex column is here utilized in order to develop an approach for advanced molds, where pressure levels, fluid dynamics of concrete and disassembly are integrative part of the design process. In conclusion are presented recommendations for further development at larger scale.

summary Additive manufacturing techniques (AMT), commonly referred to as 3D printing, are emerging as a new area of study for the production of ceramic elements at the architectural scale. AMT may allow architectural designers to break from the established means of designing with ceramic elements – a process where designs are typically confined to a limited selection of building components produced by machine, die or fixture. In this paper, we report a method for the design and additive manufacture of customizable ceramic masonry elements via paste-based extrusion. A novel digital workflow allowed for precise control of part design, and generated manufacturing parameters such as toolpath geometry and machine code. 3D scans of a selection of elements provide an initial analysis of print fidelity. We discuss the current constraints of this process and identify several on-going research trajectories generated because of this research.

summary This research investigates the design and prototyping of fabrication machines that utilize multi-dimensional printing techniques to sculpt an invisible medium- airflow, inspired by its unique materiality, philosophical value, sensorial aspects, and increasing considerations of atmosphere and climate in architectural research and design. A series of robotic thermal devices were developed to modulate animated geometry sequences through scripted movements, designated coordinates, and temperature fluctuations. This paper elaborates in depth multi-stage developments and experiments that integrate various systems, fabrication processes, optical experiments and computational analysis. summary The study aimed to develop and test an environmentally friendly, easily deployable, and affordable solution for socio-economically challenged populations of the world. 3D-printing (additive manufacturing) was used as a rapid prototyping tool to develop and test a façade system that would modulate air velocity through modifying nozzle profiles to utilize natural cross ventilation techniques in order to improve human comfort in buildings. Constrained by seasonal weather and interior partitions which block the ability to cross ventilate, buildings can be equipped to perform at reduced energy loads and improved internal human comfort by using a façade system composed of retractable nozzles developed through this empirical research. This paper outlines the various stages of development and results obtained from physically testing different profiles of nozzle-forms that would populate the façade system. In addition to optimizing nozzle profiles, the team investigated the potential of collapsible tube systems to permit precise placement of natural ventilation directed at occupants of the built space.

summary Scripting, BIM and Digital Fabrication are already recognized as important skills in education and practice in Architecture in the 21st century. However, they are not always applied together to generate innovative results for the industry. This paper starts from the observation of the difficulty that prefabricated bathroom factories have in meeting a demand for mass customization and proposes a workflow that goes from the generation of layouts to modeling in BIM and the automated production of documents for manufacturing. The preliminary results demonstrate the possibility of changing the mass production culture of an industry, by means of applying the proposed workflow.

summary The use of digital fabrication tools can extend beyond the seamless materialization of the digital model and can continuously inform design ideation through emerging material qualities. Exploring the implications of an approach to digital fabrication that is not based on imposed and rigorous formalisms but on unique and contextual ones constitutes the research agenda. Within this framework, the focus of this paper is on 3D printing with clay. Considering matter not as the static and passive outcome of digitally predetermined form, but as a design generator, a case study on both the materials and tools employed in 3D printing with clay is presented.

title Tangible topographic modeling for landscape architects

summary We present Tangible Landscape—a technology for rapidly and intuitively designing landscapes informed by geospatial modeling, analysis, and simulation. It is a tangible interface powered by a geographic information system that gives three- dimensional spatial data an interactive, physical form so that users can naturally sense and shape it. Tangible Landscape couples a physical and a digital model of a landscape through a real-time cycle of physical manipulation, three-dimensional scanning, spatial computation, and projected feedback. Natural three-dimensional sketching and real-time analytical feedback should aid landscape architects in the design of high performance landscapes that account for physical and ecological processes. We conducted a series of studies to assess the effectiveness of tangible modeling for landscape architects. Landscape architecture students, academics, and professionals were given a series of fundamental landscape design tasks—topographic modeling, cut-and-fill analysis, and water flow modeling. We assessed their performance using qualitative and quantitative methods including interviews, raster statistics, morphometric analyses, and geospatial simulation. With tangible modeling, participants built more accurate models that better represented morphological features than they did with either digital or analog hand modeling. When tangibly modeling, they worked in a rapid, iterative process informed by real-time geospatial analytics and simulations. With the aid of real-time simulations, they were able to quickly understand and then manipulate how complex topography controls the flow of water.

summary Our research aims to push the limits of 3D printing towards the structural design and optimization. Additive manufacturing has an unique feature which is printing multi-faced complex geometries as easy as simple ones. Therefore additive manufacturing creates the chance of producing really small scaled complex forms. In a structural network, it can be easily understood that the more geometric variations to respond stress, the more adaptive structure will become to respond structural needs. The structural reaction is to be fictionalized by procedural operations and analysis that will be a tool to design multi-scaled fragmented structures. Those operations is to use the structural analysis and material reactions. Their iteration with the overall geometry will form the geometric generations. However the verification of the generations as outcomes of a real 3D printer is crucial. To verify, the precision of additive manufacturing should be sensitive enough that the structural element will function as it's simulated in computer with the algorithm. The sensitivity is important because, even couple of micro-sized problems can cause bigger ones in the structural element itself. The combination of all these variables can enable an initial geometry, to be able to adapt the stuructural needs in every additive generation.

summary This paper describes an architectural design studio experiment, developed with the aim of exploring the interrelationship between the architectural design of basic shelters and additive manufacturing technology (aka 3D printing) using concrete. This fabrication technology has been developed over the past twenty years in various locations Worldwide and there has been some experiments on its use for making buildings. However, these experiments are still very limited in number and results, in the sense that do not fully explore the potential of the technology and its impact on the way we design and make buildings. The studio evolved in the context of a larger project in which a multidisciplinary team of researchers is developing the technology for the additive manufacturing in concrete. Research evolves along three main thrusts of work on materials, systems, and design. The studio introduced students to these various aspects, examined their interrelationships, impacts, and applications in architectural design and construction of buildings. The hope was to collect more information and feedback to inform the overarching research. Results showed the feasibility of the technology and identified issues that need to be addressed in future research.

keywords This paper presents an ongoing work towards the development of an integrated robotically-driven workflow that can be used for the design, development and subsequent fabrication of small-to large-scale elastic tensile mesh structures. This approach involves digital form-finding and optimization, driven by robotic manufacturing principles and it aims to overcome the limitations of currently available tools, to work either in the design or the fabrication phase of the process. At the same time, it involves the fabrication of systems in several scales followed by respective analyses of results according to the specific type and diameter of the material used. Specifically, form-finding and optimization are responsible for controlling the pretension of the elastic threads, aiming to determine the final tensile mesh and to generate the additive robotic tool-path. In parallel, the type and diameter of the material involved, define the necessary changes of the end-effector tool, which is responsible to implement the process. Despite that design results can be in any scale, for study purposes an experimentation into a small-scale is conducted, to evaluate the suggested automated construction process in general and the end-effector mechanism in particular.

summary Currently, it is nearly impossible for an artificial neural network to generalize a task from very few examples. Humans, however, excel at this. For instance, it is not necessary for a designer to see thousands or millions of unique examples of how to place a given drawing symbol in a way that meets the economic, aesthetic, and performative goals of the project. In fact, the goals can be (and usually are) communicated abstractly in natural language. Machine learning (ML) models, however, do need numerous examples. The methods that we explore here are an attempt to circumvent this in order to make ML models more immediately useful.

In this work, we present progress on the application of contemporary ML techniques to the design process in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. We introduce a technique to partially circumvent the data hungriness of neural networks, which is a significant impediment to their application outside of the ML research community. We also show results on the applicability of this technique to real-world drawings and present research that addresses how some fundamental attributes of drawings as images affect the way they are interpreted in deep neural networks. Our primary contribution is a technique to train a neural network to segment real-world architectural drawings after using only generated pseudodrawings.

summary As a traditional building material, clay has been used by humans for a long time. From early civilisations, to the modern dependence on new technologies, the craft of clay making is commonly linked with the use of moulds, handmade creations, ceramic extruders, etc. (Schmandt and Besserat, 1977). Clay in the form of bricks is one of the oldest building materials known (Fernandes et al, 2010). This research expands the possibilities offered by standardised bricks by testing types of clay, forms, shapes, porosity, and structural methods. The traditional way of working with clay relies on human craftsmanship and is based on the use of semi-solid clay (Fernandes et al., 2010). However, there is little research on the use of clay slurry. With the rise of 3D printing systems in recent years, research and development has been emerging on using clay as a 3D printing filament (Gürsoy, 2018). Researchers have discovered that in order for 3D-printed clay slurry to solidify quickly to support the weight of the added layers during printing, curing agents such as lime, coal ash, cement, etc. have to be added to the clay slurry. After adding these substances, clay is difficult to be reused and can have a negative effect on the environment (Chen et al., 2021). In this study, a unique method for manufacturing clay elements of intricate geometries is proposed with the help of an internal skeleton that can be continuously reused. The study introduces the process of applying clay on a special structure through spraying and showcases how this method creates various opportunities for customisation of production.

summary The cobogó is a hollow brick used for light and ventilation control, besides having an important aesthetic function. With computer graphics, 3d digital models can be used during the design process to verify these functions. Thus, the goal of this paper is to compare and analyze the different digital 3D models obtained (built virtually or through 3D scanning) of a cobogó existing in the Brazilian market, so that visual and lighting differences can be observed, and how these differences can impact the design process.

summary Thanks to the influence of innovative technologies is possible to build complex shapes using sophisticated software and digital equipment capable to work with a huge amount of data. The aim of this paper is to discuss the design and production from the fence panels of United Arab Emirates (UAE) pavilion at International Exhibition in 2015 and the Tower CityLife Milano from Zaha Hadid’s office, in an attempt to understand how the customized components of the building walls were developed.

summary We present a computationally-based manufacturing process that allows for variable pattern casting through the use of ferrofluid – a mixture of suspended magnetic nanoparticles in a carrier liquid. The capacity of ferrofluid to form intricate spike and labyrinthine packing structures from ferrohydrodynamic instabilities is well recognized in industry and popular science. In this paper we employ these instabilities as a mold for the direct casting of rigid materials with complex periodic features. Furthermore, using a bitmap-based computational workflow and an array of high-strength neodymium magnets with linear staging, we demonstrate the ability to program the macro-scale pattern formation by modulating the magnetic field density within a single cast. Using this approach, it is possible to program specific patterns in the resulting cast tiles at both the micro- and macro-scale and thus generate tiled arrays with predictable halftone-like image features. We demonstrate the efficacy of this approach for a variety of materials typically used in the architecture, engineering, and construction industries (AEC) including epoxys, ceramics, and cements.
