summary This paper questions the ideal digital paradigm of its applicability for non-standard architectural practice in China. Streamlined multi-disciplinary cooperation may constrain when facing a challenging construction context which notorious for its high speed, lack of craftsmanship, low budgets, and poor detailing. Living with this, however, a group of digital practitioners has successfully been able to complete several non-standard architectural projects with a complex form. An argument raises suggesting an essential part of their success lies in their alternative use of typical parametric models, which are adapted to create tolerance space between design, development, and implementation process in response to local challenges. Here, we study two non-standard cases from Chinese architectural practice HHDFUN. By analysing the project delivery processes, this paper ambitious to extract higher-level knowledge that will contribute to the professional practice and facilitate the extension of an expanded, yet purely digital design solution space into the challenging material world of local construction.

summary The article presents two methods for generating 3D city models. The methods are based on LiDAR and GIS-2D data. The first one enables to create automatically simplified city models that include buildings in the LoD1 standard (excluding roof geometry). The second one provides for generating precise 3D city models including all components of the city space, such as buildings, tall green, city infrastructure. This involves direct transformation of DSM (Digital Surface Model) data as mesh-3D. The analyses presented are based on data available in Poland (in particular GIS). The results of the study can be easily applied for analysing other cities in Europe and elsewhere in the world. The article presents possibilities of using such models to urban analyses. The methods and figures included in the article have been developed using C++ software developed by the author.

summary This research explores the dynamics of neighbourhood restaurants distribution in Tianjin, China, against the backdrop of rapid urbanization and evolving consumer preferences. Analysing key factors such as consumer demand, transportation, location, built environment, and competition, the study utilizes count regression models to assess occurrence frequency. The investigation reveals a significant surge in community restaurants from 2018 to 2021, influencing spatial patterns. Population density, housing prices, transportation infrastructure, and built environment emerge as pivotal factors impacting neighbourhood restaurants dynamics. The Hurdle-NB model, considering both count and zero parts, demonstrates the best fit. This study contributes nuanced insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders, aiding in enhancing accessibility, sustainability, and competitiveness of neighbourhood restaurants in urban areas amidst changing urban dynamics and consumer trends.

summary In the recent decades, the high-resolution remote sensing, through 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry benefited historic buildings maintenance, conservation, and restoration works. However, the dense surface models (DSM) generated from the data capture have nonstructured features as lack of topology and semantic discretization. The process to create a semantically oriented 3D model from the DSM, using the of Building Information Model technology, is a possibility to integrate historical information about the life cycle of the building to maintain and improving architectural valued building stock to its functional level and safeguarding its outstanding historical value. Our approach relies on an ontology-based system to represent the knowledge related to the building. Our work outlines a model-driven approach based on the hybrid data acquisition, its post-processing, the identification of the building' main features for the parametric modeling, and the development of an ontological map integrated with the BIM model. The methodology proposed was applied to a large-scale industrial historical building, located in Brazil. The DSM were compared, providing a qualitative assessment of the proposed method.

summary The paper proposes a computational tool for simulating the users' urban cognitive systems, or more specifically the long-term memory associated with the knowledge of urbanism and its related urban visual features. The tool builds on our comprehensive theory of Urbanism, which presents a monolithic, structured, comprehensive, professional conception of Urbanism based on which any relativistic users' urban conceptions could be predicted as a restructuring of the professional conception. These versatile relativistic conceptions would emerge based on a nurturing environment, which is a conception of the empirical/anthropological collected data of the intended users' reflections against their preferred constructed urban environments. Once the users' conceptions of Urbanism are formulated, which is the first phase of the simulation, the users' impressions against any examined urban constructs are attainable, which is the second phase of the simulation. The two phases, the framework, would be monolithically represented by a proposed novel cellular graph. The proposed computational tool is thought of as a robust technique for the computational incorporation of the users' urban identity, and some of its constituents could be considered as a needed common platform of communication for a successful Human-Computer interaction in the field of urban analysis/design.

summary Cultural Heritage is a wide concept. It's what remains of the past generations Cultural Heritage includes tangible culture (such as buildings, monuments, landscapes, books, works of art and artifacts), intangible culture (such as folklore, music, traditions, language and knowledge) and natural heritage (including culturally significant landscapes, and biodiversity). A good preservation, restauration and valorization of Cultural Heritage embraces tangible and intangible culture, actually not evaluated in an holistic way.Cultural Heritage is not only an historical memory of the past, but the mirror of an anthropological reality that characterizes our personal and collective identity within a cultural context. The question is: How can we take into account these thought categories? The model proposed would be an used methodology to analyze the model for data acquisition, processing, modeling and implementation of knowledge on culture and social context through ontologies. The purpose of the research is to analyze the relationship between Cultural Context and Cultural Heritage.The contribution proposes an original approach to Cultural Heritage based on a social and cultural approach, transforming the user as an actor for the acquisition of raw data and cultural knowledge, applying the model to the Archaeological Complex of Casinum, in South Latium.

summary Architecture, like other practice-oriented schools, aims to teach skills and knowledge required in professional practice. The aspired architecture profession increasingly requires practitioners who are able to work in collaborative BIM environments. This creates a task for education to develop new ways of teaching BIM concepts and tools to prepare the next generations of students who will enter the work force. To address this need, this study developed a methodology for learning BIM in architecture education by establishing relationship between practice and education. As substantial part of methodology development process, this paper will present the ongoing research that focuses on collaborative teaching process between AE practitioners and teachers. The benefits and challenges of this process will be presented and discussed.

summary Designers often carry out their work in the early design stages with disregard to prefabrication requirements, leading to poorly thought out design decisions in terms of precast concrete planning efficiency. If precast expertise could be integrated early into design schemes, this would improve design efficiency, reduce errors and misalignments, and save time at every design iteration. The objective is not to replace precast domain experts, but to help architects make better-informed design decisions. This research is part of a wider investigation that aims to develop a rule-based expert system to support an automated review of precast concrete requirements in BIM models in the early design stages, proactively providing feedback for design decision support. This specific paper summarizes the theoretical part of the research and proposes a way to formalize precast expert knowledge as rule-sets in a tabular form that can be later programmed and integrated in a BIM platform for automated checking of BIM models.

summary This paper examines the topic of transferring technical knowledge in an expedited fashion to designers, and/or students, through various training programs, tools, workflows and protocols, while highlighting the invaluable cost knowledge sharing has on global design institutions and offices. We will revisit the timeless tribulations of the 'educator', acknowledging the inherent limitations associated with transferring technical knowledge from generation to generation within both a design practice and on an academic level. The conceptual design, workflow and construction of 'wasl Tower', UNStudio's latest 308m landmark structure, located in the city center of Dubai, will be referenced as a case-study to illustrate the importance of transferring knowledge within a specific project setting.

summary In a context where architectural education is undergoing great transformations due to the impact of digital technology, the authors present a design studio model that rather than teaching how to operate the tool en vogue focuses on the formulation of questions. Traditional pedagogic practices have privileged answers in knowledge production, but an alternative is proposed. A methodology was devised in which problem-finding is moved forward by an iterative process of experimental making. This was tested in Winter 2017 with results showing a diversity in questions raised, but also the premature discontinuation of several paths of inquiry. Only one completed all 6 planned iterations and benefited from the final, in which the building of a 1:1 prototype informed its research focus. The conclusions highlight the contribution of this model in preparing future practitioners with an attitude of inquiry and drive to experiment that will resist obsoleteness from rapid technological developments.

summary This paper presents a mixed-method research design investigation that integrates a Hybrid Digital-Analog Software-Hardware protocol referred to as the No Keyboard, No Mouse (NK-NM) platform. The NK-NM process uses both theoretical and applied research mechanisms to measure its influence on architectural design decision-making, knowledge exchange, student learning, aesthetics, and user experience in the context of an undergraduate architectural design studio. Observing a recognized gap in the current digital architectural design environments this paper details how the NK-NM protocol bridges this gap through an instructed hierarchical design process, customizable physical interface, and iterative simulation-based feedback loop.

summary The rise of platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and Uber, initially celebrated as part of a disruptive new era of the internet, has slowly been reassessed as a problematic and unregulated form of twenty-first-century info-capitalism that contributes to inequality, mistrust, and user polarization. The internet has become a place for content creation, not only consumption, and the content freely created by the network of users has defined a self-organizing system of ad-hoc audiences following echo chambers organized through artificial intelligence, which amplifies previously identified trends. While a large portion of the content created by users seems to be aimed at personal forms of entertainment, a few remarkable projects, such as Wikipedia, have allowed hundreds of users to contribute to a collective goal. While we can observe that the platform model has appeared in diverse disciplines, allowing the creation of content from news articles to music, we have not seen the emergence of a robust design platform intended to proliferate and advance the discipline of architecture.

This paper makes the case that video game technology and its audiences have reached a state of technical capability that could allow for architectural platforms to emerge, one in which players could learn, create, and share architectural designs. Such a platform comes with a series of ethical imperatives, questions of value proposition, and liabilities, as well as a high potential to communicate and proliferate architectural knowledge and know-how. Common’hood, currently under development, will be used as a case study to engage the development of an ethical architectural platform that develops a proposition towards authorship, ownership, and collective engagement.

summary The Architectural Studio is dedicated to teaching students the design process. Students learn by developing an architectural artefact in increasing complexity. They do so through three phases: structuring the problem, developing design proposals and converging decisions into a detailed solution state. This process has been taking place mostly in traditional physical settings. The advent of new technologies, most notably Immersive Virtual Environments (IVEs), introduces a new kind of setting that holds promise to influence the architectural learning process. This paper describes a model we have developed to assess the impact of IVE on this learning process. To do so, we have developed a method for coding learners' design decisions and the way they are developed, accounting for their educational settings - whether a traditional studio classroom or an IVE. The method consists of units we term Knowledge Construction Activities (KCAs) and reveals the relationship between the learning process and the educational setting in which it takes place, through time. The results revealed that the IVE supported extensive design development, especially during the second and third learning phases, calling for an informed integration of IVEs in future Studio syllabi.

summary To improve environmental wellbeing and productivity, design innovation focuses on human's use-process, evolving individual space to flexible and specialized ones, according to the users' tasks - activity-based. BIM models supports sophisticated behaviours' simulation such as energy, acoustics, although it is not able to manage space use-processes. The present paper rather than a report of a case study or the presentation of a new methodology wants to contribute, together with previous works, in sketching a theroretical framework within which it is possible to compute the interaction between users and spaces (and vice versa). The quest is to reflect on possible paths for engineering knowledge and understanding, providing a BIM system the semantic information required to operate adaptively and achieve robust and innovative goal-directed behavior. Compared to current research on simulation systems, this research approach links Context, intended as spaces capabilities to Actor's Behavioural Knowledge including formalization of personality typologies and profiled behavioural patterns. By means of a classical problem solving metaphor, the "squared peg in a round hole" one, multiple categories for goal achievement are sketched, based on reciprocal Actors and Context behaviour adaptation.

summary The construction industry faces numerous challenges related to productivity, sustainability, and meeting global demands (Hatoum and Nassereddine 2020; Carra et al. 2018; Barbosa, Woetzel, and Mischke 2017; Bock 2015; Linner 2013). In response, the automation of design and construction has emerged as a promising solution. In the past three decades, researchers and innovators in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) fields have made significant strides in automating various aspects of building construction, utilizing computational design and robotic fabrication processes (Dubor et al. 2019). However, synthesizing innovation in automation encounters several obstacles. First, there is a lack of an established venue for information sharing, making it difficult to build upon the knowledge of peers. First, the absence of a well-established platform for information sharing hinders the ability to effectively capitalize on the knowledge of peers. Consequently, much of the research remains isolated, impeding the rapid dissemination of knowledge within the field (Mahbub 2015). Second, the absence of a standardized and unified process for automating design and construction leads to the individual development of standards, workflows, and terminologies. This lack of standardization presents a significant obstacle to research and learning within the field. Lastly, insufficient training materials hinder the acquisition of skills necessary to effectively utilize automation. Traditional in-person robotics training is resource-intensive, expensive, and designed for specific platforms (Peterson et al. 2021; Thomas 2013).

Because of this, system development and pilot projects have attempted to share 3D virtual models via the internet in real-time but is still insufficient compared with face-to-face meeting. Therefore, this research explores the applicability of a spatial mixed reality (MR) system that displays point cloud streams to realize 3D remote meeting in architecture and urban fields. MR is a new technology that enables 3D presentations of various information, combining the physical and virtual worlds. One MR method is telepresence, which is expected to give people a way to communicate remotely as if face to face in a realistic way. We first developed a MR system named PcsMR (Point cloud stream on mixed reality) to display point cloud streams. The PcsMR system's operation consists of generating and transferring a point cloud stream and then rendering a point cloud stream using MR. The PcsMR acquired the point cloud stream in real-time using Kinect for Windows v2 and transferred it to Microsoft HoloLens, which uses optical see-through MR. Then we constructed two prototypes based on PcsMR and carried out pilot projects. Through observing the experiments, application possibilities for architecture and urban fields are found in meetings and communications that share real-time 3D objects and include the movement of remote participants and objects. The proposed method was evaluated feasible and effective.

summary This paper presents the findings from a comparative study of an architectural space communicated as the space itself and its two different representations, i.e. a virtual reality model and traditional plan and section drawings. Using eye tracking technology in combination with qualitative questionnaires, a case study of an architectural space is investigated in physical reality, a virtual reality 3D BIM model, and finally through representation of the space in plan and section drawings. In this study, the virtual reality scenario seems closer to reality than the experience of the same space experienced through plan and section drawings. There is an overall higher correlation of both the conscious reflections and the less conscious behaviour between the real physical architectural space and the virtual reality space, than there is between the real space and the space communicated through plan and section drawings. We can conclude that the scenario with the best overall size estimations, compared to the actual measures, is the virtual reality scenario. The paper further discusses the future applications of virtual reality in architecture.

summary In the late 1960s the architect Nicholas Negroponte introduced that the physical environment could exhibit reflexive and simulated behaviours, an idea that has since been widely explored. Despite of this wider interest, there is not, however, a systematic approach to understanding architectural responsiveness in the digital age. This paper aims to provide a formal way to facilitate designing smart and interactive artificiality in the built environment. This paper presents a conceptual framework, through exploratory studies on recent architecture, highlighting four key behaviours: (1) tangible interaction, (2) embodied response, (3) ambient simulation, and (4) mixed reality. In addition, two essential enablers, collectiveness and immersion, are proposed to enhance these key behaviours. This framework can be used as a tool to systematically identify and characterise the responsiveness of "responsive architecture". The creative mixtures of the key behaviours will contribute to the development of unique responsive environments.

summary This paper presents a way to predict people's interest in a public space based on a space's "attractiveness" as a movement attractor. Two generative systems are integrated into the prediction model. The Cellular Automata (CA) is the core of simulation engine and the Shape Grammars (SG) is a descriptive language for the CA rules. Both, CA and SG exhibit complementary features counteracting each other's drawbacks. Having translated social behaviour into a set of rules, the CA algorithm applies them to distinguish people's leisure interest attractors from places with a minor attractiveness. The tool is designed to be used at various urban scales by city planners and venture capitalists. It is dedicated towards the early stage of planning process to evaluate the future attractiveness of places. The case study is located in the central district of Lisbon, Bairro Alto. One of the important aspects are description of the rules with SG and interpretation of the CA results. Implemented in Python for Grasshopper and visualised in Rhinoceros3D. The article does not present the final solution, rather is an experimental attempt to interpret and describe the already explored urban context of Cellular Automata.
