summary Nature is always full of patterns inspiring all the disciplines and especially architecture in many ways. Currently, with the advances in technology and growing interest towards nature-driven studies, retrieving information from nature has a new connotation in scales and dimensions including both living and non-living beings. In this study, it is aimed to explore the scales of nature from Nano to Macro and a holistic approach is embraced to cope with the complexity of nature and architecture. To understand these complexities, patterns in different forms and scales serve as valuable tools to decode and recode information from one domain to another through locating the order and how patterns exist in different and changing environments with respect to forces and the urge of the existence of the being.This research focuses on the behavior of crystal formation which can be observed both in biotic and abiotic nature to understand the order generating the patterns in nature and its adaptation into a different and changing environment. This information of crystallization has great potential for architecture in terms of spatial structures, new materials and introducing a novel lattice for freeform structures. In this study, the potentials, limits and possible contributions of crystal formation are stated for architecture in the search of symmetry and patterns.

summary This paper is part of our research on the digital transition in architecture, and more particularly on the integration of BIM (Building Information Management) technology. Indeed, in the field of AEC in France, this transition is still ongoing and remains difficult for architects. BIM technology changes the way people work and communicate, and remains only a tool without a method behind it. His arrival then raises technical but also human questions. Our research then turns to the social sciences and project management sciences to see if the creation or adaptation of project management methods can facilitate this integration. In other fields such as industry, software engineering, or HMI design, we have seen the emergence of agile methods that focus more on design teams, and therefore communication, than on the process itself. After experimenting with several agile practices, we identified the need for a design team to be mentored by someone in the role of facilitator or coach. This article describes how we can transfer to students an agile practice called BIM-agile Coach that we experimented during a weeklong workshop.

summary In 2018 I was invited to visit the archipelago of Kiribati, located in the Pacific Ocean around 1000 miles from Hawaii. A big ocean state, Kiribati holds a land mass of around 315 sq. miles and an oceanic economic zone of 1,328,890 sq. mi. Tarawa, the most inhabited of the islands peaks at around 3 m above sea level. I went to Kiribati in part to meet with Dr Teweiariki Teaero, a renowned scholar, poet and educator who had directed the Oceania Center at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji for many years before returning to his homeland where at the time he had been planning on running for government. Teweiariki spoke with me at length about the status of Kiribati as one of the already most critically affected frontline nations. I asked him what was a lesson for non-Pacific Islanders to learn about understanding everyday life there. He said to me “Two ears, one mouth, don’t talk too much. Learn to listen more. Not only to hear, but to be able to develop another thing and that is to be able to interpret. These things are different, they occur at different levels. The hearing and the interpretation of the sound…it’s very much part of our world” (Teaero 2018).

summary The theme of the 36th eCAADe Conference is Computing for a better tomorrow. When we consider the aims of research activities, design efforts and mastering towards ideal solutions in the area of digital technologies in the built environment, such as CAD, CAM, CAE, BIM, FM, GIS, VR, AR and others, we may realise the actual reason for that is to make life better, healthier, prettier, happier, more sustainable and smarter. The usefulness of undertaken studies might be tested and proved by the noticeable shared approach of putting humans and their environments in a central position: man and the environment, nature and design, art and technology... Natural disasters and climate change, crime and terrorism, disabilities and society ageing - architects, designers and scientists active in the built environment domain are not able to eliminate all the risk, dangers and problems of contemporary world. On the other hand, they have social and moral responsibilities to address human needs and take up this multifaceted challenge. It involves a co-operation and, moreover, an interdisciplinary and user-oriented approach. The complexity of raised problems should not discourage us, on the contrary, it should stimulate activities towards living up to human dreams of a better and sustainable tomorrow. This calls for a revision of methods and tools applied in research, teaching and practice. Where are we? What are the milestones and roadmaps at the end of the second decade of the 21st century? Do we really take the most of the abundance of accumulated knowledge? Or we skip to explore another undiscovered domains? We invited academicians, researchers, professionals and students from all over the world to address the multifaceted notions of using computing in architectural and related domains for developing a better tomorrow. Approaches discussing the theme from the perspective of computer aided design education; design processes and methods; design tool developments; and novel design applications, as well as real world experiments and case studies were welcomed. In order to specifically address some of the questions above, we defined subthemes and organised specific sessions around these subthemes, during the conference as well as in the proceedings.

title The future of architects’ digital records: how to preserve algorithmic design?

summary Recently architects and archivists started to consider solutions for the digitization of architectural records and conservation of born-digital files. Documenting, organizing, cataloguing, archiving, preserving and accessing files are essential tasks to preserve architects’ digital records. With the increasing quantity of algorithmic design another aspect of the digital design must be on architects’ agenda: the memory of the design process. This paper emphasises the importance of preserving digital architecture records in accessible and sustainable formats for the generations to come. This paper demonstrates a strategy to document visual programming algorithm files allowing to archive, study, interpret or replicate them.

summary The Catoptric Surface research project explores methods of reflecting daylight through a building envelope to form an image-based pattern of light on the interior environment. This research investigates the generation of atmospheric effects from daylighting projected onto architectural surfaces within a built environment in an attempt to amplify or reduce spatial perception. The mapping of variable organizations of light onto existing or new surfaces creates a condition where the perception of space does not rely on form alone. This condition creates a visual effect of a formless atmosphere and affects the way people use the space. Often the desired quantity and quality of daylight varies due to factors such as physiological differences due to age or the types of tasks people perform (Lechner 2009). Yet the dominant mode of thought toward the use of daylighting tends to promote a homogeneous environment, in that the resulting lighting level is the same throughout a space. This research project questions the desire for uniform lighting levels in favor of variegated and heterogeneous conditions. The main objective of this research is the production of a unique facade system that is capable of dynamically redirecting daylight to key locations deep within a building. Mirrors in a vertical array are individually adjusted via stepper motors in order to reflect more or less intense daylight into the interior space according to sun position and an image-based map. The image-based approach provides a way to specifically target lighting conditions, atmospheric effects, and the perception of space.

summary Contained in this years paper proceedings are an unbiased mixed of the precise/imprecise and the computationally faithful/unfaithful. The juxtaposition of this seeming contradictory research and/or projects paints a picture of a broadening computational discourse at the intersection of art, science and technology. The presented research mediates physical, digital, virtual and mixed realities, bridges scales from the singular material compounds to the complex conglomerations associated with the urban environment, and all the while pushing against the limits of design both on Earth and beyond. This year’s conference calls into question how we within the disciplines of architecture and design as well as those outside view the role of computation, production and advanced technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence within architecture, design and the built environment.

title The Transposable Limits of Open Design for Sustainable Development

summary In this study, we defined a set of parameters to evaluate openness, social inclusiveness, economic viability and environmental responsibility in Open Design (OD) Projects. We compared the parameters of eight OD cases of different nature and scale related to the built environment. We identified current limitations to the application of OD in developing countries and developed a set of recommendations to improve openness and guarantee sustainable practices. Results show that social inclusiveness is limited to the existence of digital fabrication tools and collaboration platforms, there is a lack of information concerning environmental aspects and there are positive perspectives for local businesses and job creation.

summary This paper examines a novel, integrated and collaborative approach to design and fabrication, enabled through Mixed Reality. In a bespoke fabrication process, the design is controlled and altered by users in holographic space, through a custom, multi-modal interface. Users input is live-streamed and channeled to 3D modelling environment,on-demand robotic fabrication and AR-guided assembly. The Holographic Interface is aimed at promoting man-machine collaboration. A bespoke pipeline translates hand gestures and audio into CAD and numeric fabrication. This enables non-professional participants engage with a plethora of novel technology. The feasibility of Mixed Reality for architectural workflow was tested through an interactive installation for the makeCity Berlin 2018 festival. Participants experienced with on-demand design, fabrication an AR-guided assembly. summary This paper presents data visualizations of an intelligent environment that were designed to serve the needs of two stakeholder groups: visitors wanting to understand how that environment operates, and developers interested in optimizing it. The visualizations presented here were designed for [Amatria], a sentient sculpture built by the Living Architecture Systems Group (LASG) at Indiana University Bloomington, IN, USA, in the spring of 2018. They are the result of an extended collaboration between LASG and the Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science Center (CNS) at Indiana University. We introduce [Amatria], review related work on the visualization of smart environments and sentient architectures, and explain how the Data Visualization Literacy Framework (DVL-FW) can be used to develop visualizations of intelligent interactive systems (IIS) for these two stakeholder groups.

summary We will characterize the relationship between Internet of Things (IOT) and Virtual Reality (VR) as the tension between analog and digital domains, organized by several interfaces specifically developed for this study, during de course Interactive Architecture at the Architecture School - UFMG. These interfaces, referred here as programmable meta-objects (MOPs), recombine themselves to form an environment where inputs and outputs of each MOP are made available to other networked MOPs through the Hydra System (!). These MOPs can have both a physical existence (object present in physical space) and a "virtual" existence (it exists in the Virtual Reality environment).

summary Construction simplicity is crucial to cost control, however design complexity is often necessary in order to meet particular spatial performance criteria. This paper presents a case study of a semi-enclosed meeting pod that has a brief that must contend with the seemingly contradictory conditions of the necessary geometric complexities imperative to improved acoustic performance and cost control in construction. A series of deep oculi are introduced as architectural elements to link the pod interior to the outside environment. Their reveals also introduce sound reflection and scattering, which contribute to the main acoustic goal of improved speech privacy. Represented as a three-dimensional funnel like shape, the reveal to each opening is unique in size, depth and angle. Traditionally, the manufacturing of such bespoke architectural elements in many cases resulted in lengthy and costly manufacturing processes. This paper investigates how the complex oculi shape variations can be manufactured using one universal mold. A workflow using mathematical and computational operations, a standardized fabrication approach and customization through tooling results in a high precision digital process to create particular calculated geometries, recalibrated at each stage to account for the paradoxical inexactitudes and inevitable tolerances.

summary Historically, architectural design focused on adaptation of built environment to serve human needs. Recently embedded computation and digital fabrication have advanced means to actuate physical infrastructure in real-time. These 'reactive spaces' have typically explored movement and media as a means to achieve reactivity and physical deformation (Chatting et al. 2017). However, here we recontextualize 'reactive' as finding new mechanisms for permanent and non-deformable everyday materials and environments. In this paper, we describe our ongoing work to create a series of complex forms - modular concrete panels - using thermal, tactile and thermochromic responses controlled by embedded networked system. We create individualized pathways to thermally actuate these surfaces and explore expressive methods to respond to the conditions around these forms - the environment, the systems that support them, their interaction and relationships to human occupants. We outline the design processes to achieve thermally adaptive concrete panels, illustrate interactive scenarios that our system enables, and discuss opportunities for new forms of interactivity within the built environment.

title TreeHugger - The Eco-Systemic Prototypical Urban Intervention

keywords The paper discusses co-design, development, production, application of TreeHugger (see Figure 1). The co-design among community and trans-disciplinary participants with different expertise required scope of media mix, switching between analogue, digital and back again. This involves different degrees of physical and digital 'GIGA-Mapping' (Sevaldson, 2011, 2015), 'Grasshopper3d' (Davidson, 2017) scripting and mix of digital and analogue fabrication to address the real life world. The critical participation of this 'Time-Based Design' (Sevaldson, 2004, 2005) process is the interaction of the prototype with eco-systemic agency of the adjacent environment - the eco-systemic performance. The TreeHugger is a responsive solid wood insect hotel, generating habitats and edible landscaping (Creasy, 2004) on bio-tope in city centre of Prague. To extend the impact, the code was uploaded for communities to download, local-specifically edit and apply worldwide. Thus, the fusion of discussed processes is multi-scaled and multi-layered, utilised in emerging design field: Systemic Approach to Architectural Performance.

Nature maximal performance and minimal resources creations are Humanity inspiration that led us to exceed structural, material, mechanisms, tools, systems and methods boundaries (Oxman, 2010).Nature are the Architect of the most reliable and sustainable systems. Looking into Nature's lessons, this paper presents a Nature-based design methodology conducted during Kine[SIS]tem'17 Shading Systems International Summer School, held by the ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, Portugal, between 19th - 30th June 2017. The methodology encompasses two main stages, one before and other during the Summer School. From a pre-definition of context constrains, a nature based design strategy, to a planning of the manufacture and construction still during the phase of development of the design, conducted the Summer School participants through a defined biomimetic process that achieved the construction of 1:1 scale prototype.

summary The changing social structure and the development of new technologies in the emerging Society of Knowledge makes possible the development a new kind of living space or habitat that adapts and responds to the needs and problems of elderly. The exponential growth of the aging population in EU, US and Japan is well proven and it urgently calls for the innovative solutions. Today use of automated and robotic elements in design opens the new possibilities for architecture. This paper offers the background of the problem, presents few precedents of assisted by mechatronics solutions, review the four experimental design projects from Warsaw University of Technology and in conclusion propose the agenda for further design research.

summary Virtual reality environments have long been used in studies related to architecture simulation. The main objective of this paper is to measure the sense of presence that different virtual reality devices provide to users so as to evaluate their effectiveness when used to simulate real environments and draw conclusions of people's behaviors when using them. The study also aims at investigating, in a quantitative way, the influence of architectural elements on the comfort of use of a built environment, namely considering the fear of falling reported by adults while using these architectural elements. Using a between-subjects design randomly distributed between two experimental conditions (safe and unsafe), a set of three studies were conducted in three different virtual reality environments using a 5-sided-CAVE, a Powerwall or a Head Mounted Display. The study shows that immersive virtual reality devices give users a higher sense of presence than semi-immersive ones. One of the conclusions of the study is that a higher sense of presence helps to enhance the building spaces perceived impacts on users (in this case the fear of falling).

summary Architects rely on the graphic language of words and art to bridge intention and design, just as it has always been. Yet, passing an idea or concept from mental imagery to design practice through 2D, 3D, and 4D design filters is especially challenging in BIM technology. Severe limitations hinder or even preclude BIMs use in certain complex design tasks, as identified in the Anti-Box, "The anti-box celebrates the death of the ninety-degree angle- in fact, every angle." (de Graaf 2017). Compatibility and constraints determine the most appropriate uses of BIM software, from designing mundane shopping mall developments to complex architectural engineering feats that stagger the imagination. BIM's main benefit is in the middle when it is creatively employed by professional architects in multi-discipline collaborations, well versed in symbolic representation, of designs conceived of multivalent design factors: narrative, form, function, multi-sensory access, materiality, space, and environment.

summary This paper discusses the authors’ experiences and lessons learned through designing and constructing small- and large-scale robotic prototypes and the fully integrated use of VR and AR for design. Also of focus here are the methodological tools utilized to implement this student-led research in an interdisciplinary educational environment, as well as the design explorations of Mars habitation systems. Through the systems engineering approach, students will generate ideas that may or may not make it to the final design development stage, but may potentially be valuable to future real exploration habitats and mission architectures. The final prototype allows an assessment of the focus parameters, which are the vessels’ transformation capacities and layout adaption. The design objective of this project is to examine strategies for commonality between an interplanetary vehicle (IPV) and a Mars surface habitat. The presented design proposals address this challenge to create a common habitation system in both habitats so that crew members will be familiar with the layout, function, and location throughout the expedition. The design tools operate at the intersection of architectural layout design, mechanics, and structural design, and use origami folding techniques and structural form-finding concepts to generate shell action rigidity. In addition, the project develops a strategy for mobility and transformation of the surface habitat prior to its transformed configuration. The value here lies in understanding lessons from this strategy for both the design process as well as efficiency and optimization in design as a model for terrestrial design.
