summary The article presents two methods for generating 3D city models. The methods are based on LiDAR and GIS-2D data. The first one enables to create automatically simplified city models that include buildings in the LoD1 standard (excluding roof geometry). The second one provides for generating precise 3D city models including all components of the city space, such as buildings, tall green, city infrastructure. This involves direct transformation of DSM (Digital Surface Model) data as mesh-3D. The analyses presented are based on data available in Poland (in particular GIS). The results of the study can be easily applied for analysing other cities in Europe and elsewhere in the world. The article presents possibilities of using such models to urban analyses. The methods and figures included in the article have been developed using C++ software developed by the author.

summary This paper describes the application of CityMetrics, a system that articulates computational resources to analyze and optimize the performance of urban configurations. In this context, some indicators (and algorithms) such as Physical and Topological proximity, Spacematrix and Mixed-Use Index were used for analysis, optimization and comparison of two neighborhoods in the city of Juiz de Fora, Brazil. The objective of this research is to verify the possibilities of using computational tools to analyze and propose modifications in neighborhoods and cities, contributing to the decision making in the urban context.

summary According to one of the Sustainable Development Goals (UN, 2018), it is important for cities to be inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Therefore, it is necessary to value pedestrians and consequently active mobility, giving priority to the concepts of the Transportation Oriented Development (TOD) methodology. Although the Master Plan (BELO HORIZONTE, 2019) proposes that areas located in regional centralities are enhancing active mobility, can residents actually benefit from these resources at a walkable distance to access basic services? Thus, the aim of this research is to utilize digital technologies to visualize, analyze, and assess pedestrians' access conditions to commerce and basic services, identifying areas lacking infrastructure. The goal is for the model to serve as a reference for the development of public policies. To achieve this, metadata was used for parametric modeling to study walkability in the peripheral region of the city of Belo Horizonte.

summary This paper is a result of a research that uses the Space Syntax Theory for analysis of the city of Juiz de Fora, Brazil. After elaborating the axial map, based on data collection available by the City Hall, some analysis of the city were made using the syntactic measures: Integration HH, Mean Depth and Total Depth. The focus of the analysis was on the central area of the city, called "Central Triangle". As a result, the analyzes make it possible to identify that the initial urban center remains as the point of convergence of several urban areas of the city, consolidating itself as an area with great potential.

keywords The paper discusses co-design, development, production, application of TreeHugger (see Figure 1). The co-design among community and trans-disciplinary participants with different expertise required scope of media mix, switching between analogue, digital and back again. This involves different degrees of physical and digital 'GIGA-Mapping' (Sevaldson, 2011, 2015), 'Grasshopper3d' (Davidson, 2017) scripting and mix of digital and analogue fabrication to address the real life world. The critical participation of this 'Time-Based Design' (Sevaldson, 2004, 2005) process is the interaction of the prototype with eco-systemic agency of the adjacent environment - the eco-systemic performance. The TreeHugger is a responsive solid wood insect hotel, generating habitats and edible landscaping (Creasy, 2004) on bio-tope in city centre of Prague. To extend the impact, the code was uploaded for communities to download, local-specifically edit and apply worldwide. Thus, the fusion of discussed processes is multi-scaled and multi-layered, utilised in emerging design field: Systemic Approach to Architectural Performance.

summary This study constitutes the first step of a broader PhD project, which aims to build a bridge between the architectural and the juridical examination of the typicality of low-income settlements within the city of Rio de Janeiro, the favelas. The purpose is to define a rule-based typological analysis to ease the process of evaluating the typicality of favelas and the possible, desirable form of its regularisation. This objective strives to equip all the actors involved in the debate with an analytical device able to represent the socially acknowledged, yet unofficial, rules that have been moulding favelas so far. By this means, this study tests shape grammar as a methodology for approaching this interdisciplinary issue. A shape grammar for a first case study, Parque Royal favela, located in the Governor Island, is presented. As preliminary results of the research, the paper encompasses the three early stages of construction of the case study: invasion, expansion and consolidation.

summary From a critical point of view regarding Smart Cities, this paper presents an overview of Brazilian policies concerning the application of Internet of Things (IoT) on public transportation systems, using as a case study the city of Belo Horizonte. We performed a critical analysis of its public transportation system considering the already installed IoT infrastructure, including mobile communication technology that uses distributed locative media among users. Our main focus was understanding its use, potential and political dimension, specially concerning terms of use and data distribution and sharing between users, public administration and private companies that compose the transportation system.

summary In architecture, there was an evolution from Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to Building Information Modelling (BIM), but in urban planning and design, where the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are often used, there is no such analogy. This paper reviews research in typo-morphology, a branch of urban morphology, procedural modelling of buildings and cities and 3D city modelling and visualizations. It present a generic morphological structure of urban elements and discusses them as programming classes in City Information Modelling (CIM) and the application of CIM in urban design practice. Urban design can be understood as art of juxtaposing and arranging urban design elements such as streets, sidewalks, buildings, building façades, landscaping, etc. Designing implies experimentation and play for design elements within design worlds. CIM should integrate procedural modelling, urban morphological research with toolboxes of design elements and rules of combinations. CIM should serve as digital design worlds where urban designers can play with design elements, model and analyse urban scenarios with generative procedures, rules and typological processes.

summary This paper discusses the potential of using data from social media and location data platforms to create cartographies that enhance our understanding of urban dynamics. Natural Language Processing (NLP) and sentiment analysis are highlighted as essential tools for comprehending and categorizing this data. The study conducted a systematic review of NLP and sentiment analysis applications in urban studies, covering 27 peer-reviewed journals and conference papers published between 2018 and 2023. The research classified applications into six categories: urban livability, governance and management, user and landscape perception, land use and zoning, public health, and transportation and mobility. Most studies primarily relied on data from social media platforms like Twitter and location data sources such as Google Maps and Trip Advisor. Challenges include dealing with irrelevant or misleading information in publicly available data and limited accuracy when analyzing sentiments of non-English-speaking populations.

summary This paper describes a novel method for reconstructing urban environments based on individual occupant experience. The method relies on a low-cost off-the-shelf 360-degree camera to capture video and audio data from a natural walk through the city. It then uses a custom workflow based on an open-source Structure from Motion (SfM) library to reconstruct a dense point cloud from images extracted from the 360-degree video. The point cloud and audio data are then represented within a virtual reality (VR) model, creating a multisensory environment that immerses the viewer into the subjective experience of the occupant.

This work questions the role of precision and fidelity in our experience and representation of a “real” physical environment. On the one hand, the resulting VR environment is less complete and has lower fidelity than digital environments created through traditional modeling and rendering workflows. On the other hand, because each point in the point cloud is literally sampled from the actual environment, the resulting model also captures more of the noise and imprecision that characterizes our world. The result is an uncanny immersive experience that is less precise than traditional digital environments, yet represents many more of the unique physical characteristics that define our urban experiences.

summary The mediation by Augmented Reality, allows to add layers of virtual information to reality in natural and intuitive ways, guaranteeing interactions in real time and generating new perceptual stimuli not necessarily remitted exclusively to the field of vision. Interaction devices such as fiduciary markers are resources generally associated with RA experience, however these markers of paper-usually turn out to be ephemeral when implementation is done in open spaces and high traffic. The following work presents results in the analysis of materials that guarantee to be ideal for the permanent implementation of markers in pedestrian urban routes.

summary This paper describes the development of a Grasshopper-based planning support tool for urban planning. The tool aims at the analysis of demand in educational facilities and the optimization of their location and capacities. It was developed for the use case of Berlin using only publicly available resources and data sets. Through preprocessed GIS- and statistical data plus an easy-access interface, the tool encourages people from different backgrounds and even those with no professional knowledge in planning, to engage in urban decision making. Although being initially aimed at contributing to a moderated participation process, the tool's simple GUI (graphical user interface) and open source backend, make it usable in any setup - without a briefed advisor or the need for later professional evaluation by another party.

summary New digital devices, mainly mobile ones, raise new questions on architectural and urban design practices. People became ''sensors", being at the same time able to move into the city and to move into the information space. Mobiance, a mix between Mobile and Ambiance, is a research and creation process focused on the impacts of innovative ICT technologies, especially mobile, on urban design. This paper first presents the context of the third workshop based on the topic, then it introduces the proposals produced by participants; to conclude the contribution develops an analysis of these proposals based on the sharing society paradigm.

summary Architectural designers are currently depending on a multitude of elaborate computational tools in order to explore, manipulate and visualize the geometric form of their building projects. However, if architecture can be perceived as the manipulation of geometric form in direct relation to human activities and events that take place inside it, then it is evident that such design parameters are not sufficiently represented in the currently available modeling software. Would it be possible to introduce the human activity element in the aforementioned computational tools in a way that informs the design process and improves the final building product? This paper attempts to answer this question by introducing a new experimental design tool that enables the creation of parametric human activity envelopes within three-dimensional digital models. The novel approach is that this tool enables the parametric interaction of these components with the actual building geometry and generates novel visual and data representations of the 3D model. The goal is to improve the decision-making process of architects as well as their clients by enabling them to evaluate and iterate their designs based not only on the building's form but also on the human spatial events that take place inside it. A prototype implementation demonstrates the tool's practical application through three design examples.

summary This paper presents an opportunistic sensing system for air quality monitoring to forecast the implicit factors of air pollution. Opportunistic sensing is performed by web scraping in the social network service to extract information. The data source for the air quality analysis combines two types of information: explicit and implicit information. The objective is to develop the information extraction methodology by web scraping for smart cities. The application development methodology has potential for solving real-world problems such as air pollution by data comparison between social activity observing and data collecting in sensor network.

title Digitally Fabricating Expandable Steel Structures Using Kirigami Patterns

summary This article presents a computational approach to generating architectural forms for large spanning structures based on a “paper-cutting” technique. In this traditional artform, a flat sheet is cut and scored in such a way that a small application of force prompts it to expand into a three-dimensional structure. To make these types of expandable structures feasible at an architectural scale, four challenges had to be met during the research. The first was to map the kinetic properties of a paper-cut model, investigating formative parameters such as the width and frequency of cuts to determine how they affect the resulting structure. The second challenge was to computationally simulate the paper-cut structure in an accurate fashion. We accomplished this task using finite element analysis in the Ansys software platform. The third challenge was to create a prediction model that could precisely forecast the characteristics of a paper-cutting pattern. We made significant strides in this demanding task by using a data-mining approach and regression analysis through 400 simulations of various cutting patterns. The final challenge was to verify the efficiency and accuracy of our prediction model, which we accomplished through a series of physical prototypes. Our resulting computational paper-cutting system can be used to estimate optimal cutting patterns and to predict the resulting structural characteristics, thereby providing greater rigor to what has previously been an ad-hoc and experimental design approach.

summary The article reports the process of gamification applied to an educational context. This process had the goal to verify the potential of a virtual location, a loft in colonial style, in learning patrimonial architecture. Five stages were carried out: content research for the virtual location’s design; development of the game in Unreal Engine 4.16; application of the game and similar pedagogical content with two groups of students; comparative analysis of the different learning experiences of both groups of students; application of the EGameFlow with students who interacted with the game. The results showed that the tool has great pedagogical potential.

summary The paper explores parametric design technology from an urban design perspective of development. One possible finalization of technique as informer of urban space subdivision is presented, with an eye on geometry and its energy efficiency implications. The recognition of urban space as a field of complex equilibria, where different claims insist on the subdivision process, helps interpret methodology from a critical stance, at least within the margins of selected studies and a partial, yet indicative experiment.

summary We propose the combination of the traditional construction material bamboo with a novel epoxy-resin joint. The joint forms a bending-resisting connection that eliminates the need for diagonal members. This allows its utilization along rectangular grids as was tested with the design of a prototype structure that occupies a voxelized space. The design process used an agent-based simulation to mediate between design intent, site and structural considerations. The prototype was constructed with a robotic milling of the components and forms a successful application of the joints and design methodology.
