The triple graph grammar approach supports a semantic mapping from IFC to CityGML, the generation of conversion routines from this mapping, and an incremental approach to achieving a "complete and near-lossless" mapping. The objective of this approach is the development of a methodology and algorithms to automate the conversion of Building Information Models into CityGML building models, capturing both geometric and semantic information as available in the BIM models, in order to create semantically enriched 3D city models that include both exterior and interior structures.

The advantages of a triple graph grammar approach are threefold: firstly, it allows for the conversion rules to be graphically defined; secondly, the generation of the conversion routines corresponding to these rules can be automated; and, thirdly, a complete mapping can be achieved in an incremental way by adding rule by rule.The objective of this work is the development of a methodology and algorithms to automate the conversion of Building Information Models into CityGML building models, capturing both geometric and semantic information as available in the BIM models, in order to create semantically enriched 3D city models that include both exterior and interior structures such as corridors, rooms, internal doors, and stairs.

summary In the recent decades, the high-resolution remote sensing, through 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry benefited historic buildings maintenance, conservation, and restoration works. However, the dense surface models (DSM) generated from the data capture have nonstructured features as lack of topology and semantic discretization. The process to create a semantically oriented 3D model from the DSM, using the of Building Information Model technology, is a possibility to integrate historical information about the life cycle of the building to maintain and improving architectural valued building stock to its functional level and safeguarding its outstanding historical value. Our approach relies on an ontology-based system to represent the knowledge related to the building. Our work outlines a model-driven approach based on the hybrid data acquisition, its post-processing, the identification of the building' main features for the parametric modeling, and the development of an ontological map integrated with the BIM model. The methodology proposed was applied to a large-scale industrial historical building, located in Brazil. The DSM were compared, providing a qualitative assessment of the proposed method.

summary The Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology enabled improvement in the design, construction and maintenance stages highly. In the field of existing buildings, including historical assets, this technology has not yet had the same impact. This paper presents a methodology to create an intelligent digital model for an outstanding building from modern architecture in Brazil using multiple reality-based technologies. The fusion of the different point cloud raw data generated a high-resolution Dense Surface Model (DSM), the base of an accurate and detailed parametric Model. This study demonstrated the potential of digital surveying, including low-cost sensors, and BIM for built heritage documentation.

summary Scripting, BIM and Digital Fabrication are already recognized as important skills in education and practice in Architecture in the 21st century. However, they are not always applied together to generate innovative results for the industry. This paper starts from the observation of the difficulty that prefabricated bathroom factories have in meeting a demand for mass customization and proposes a workflow that goes from the generation of layouts to modeling in BIM and the automated production of documents for manufacturing. The preliminary results demonstrate the possibility of changing the mass production culture of an industry, by means of applying the proposed workflow.

summary Advances in construction automation have primarily focused on creating heavy machines to accomplish repetitive tasks. While this approach is valuable in an assembly-line context, it does not always translate well for the diverse terrain and dynamic nature of construction sites. As a result, the use of automation in the architectural assembly has lagged far behind other industries. To address the challenges of construction-site assembly, this project suggests an alternative technique that uses a fl eet of smaller robots working in parallel. The proposed method, which is inspired by the construction techniques of insect colonies, has several advantages over the use of larger machines. It allows for much greater on-site fl exibility and portability. It is also easy to scale the operation, by adding or removing additional units as needed. The use of multiple small robots provides operational redundancy that can adapt to the loss of any particular machine. These advantages make the technology particularly suitable for construction in hazardous or inaccessible areas. The use of assembly robots also opens new horizons for design creativity, allowing architects to explore new ideas that would be unwieldy and expensive to construct using traditional techniques. In our tests, we used a team of small mobile robots to fold 2D laser-cut stock into 3D curved structures, and then assemble these units into larger interlocked forms.

keywords This research focuses on design-static analysis and environmental assessment procedures that are based on the idea of a flexible kinetic formwork used as the automated mechanism for the production of bricks for porous wall structures. A key aspect of this investigation is the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analysis study that is applied in order to achieve, in parallel with the automated procedure, the sustainable potential of the products. For this purpose, the design and construction flexibility of the product is taken into account from the early design decision making stage by examining different sizes of bricks under fabrication including massive or porous ones in order to test their design and static performance, aiming to adapt their shape in multiple functional and environmental scenarios. In parallel, the LCA impact of the given design scenarios are taken into consideration, again from the early design phase, and include, among other objectives, material minimization, less environmental impact of building materials and less energy consumption based on the proposed digital fabrication technology. This is examined by comparing digital design and robotic automated results using three types of ecological materials.

summary Existing buildings are often lacking BIM models. This paper proposes a method to semi-automate the generation of BIM models from 2D CAD drawings. The method has two parts: the first part, 2D CAD drawing preparation, involves cleaning the drawings to obtain simplified 2D input geometry and the second, 3D BIM model generation, involves generating and extracting parameters to generate 3D BIM components. This research focuses on the semi-automation of the second part. The the model is generated storey by storey, with each building element type being processed. A demonstration was carried out for a case-study building. The main modelling strategies used by the method are described and key challenges are discussed.

summary In less than 150 years our carbon society transformed the planet. Today more than 50% of ecologies in the world are determined by unsustainable industrialization processes. The latest IPCC reports show that we are quickly arriving at points of no return in the warming of our planet. We cannot afford to continue in the same direction, we need a new imagination. As part of an E.U.-US funded $1.9 million research project we have been working on multiple projects for the future of the Miami islands since 2018:1. We developed a generative GIS-BIM based Python API for mapping and optimization of carbon-neutral design workflows. It includes genetic design combinatorics with intuitive graphical Dynamo-Python-Grasshopper programming with experimental design results. 2. We worked on a series of design research for the Miami Bay that envisions islands, living shorelines, programmable soils, and infrastructures that grow by themselves using synthetic biology.

summary Joints and connectors are often the most complex element in building assemblies and systems. To ensure the performance of the assemblies and systems, it is critical to optimize the geometry and configurations of the joints based on key functional requirements (e.g., stiffness and thermal exchange). The proposed research focuses on developing a multi-objective topology optimization framework that can be utilized to design highly customized joints and connections for building applications. The optimized joints that often resemble tree structures or bones are fabricated using additive manufacturing techniques. This framework is built upon the integration of high-fidelity topology optimization algorithms, additive manufacturing, computer simulations and parametric design. Case studies and numerical applications are presented to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed optimization and additive manufacturing framework. Optimal joint designs from a variety of architectural and structural design considerations, such as stiffness, thermal exchange, and vibration are discussed to provide an insightful interpretation of these interrelationships and their impact on joint performance.

title Printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic Multi-Bias Additive Manufacturing

summary A research team at Florida International University Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab has developed a novel method for 3d-printing curved open grid core sandwich structures using a thermoplastic extruder mounted on a robotic arm. This print-on-print additive manufacturing (AM) method relies on the 3d modeling software Rhinoceros and its parametric software plugin Grasshopper with Kuka-Parametric Robotic Control (Kuka-PRC) to convert NURBS surfaces into multi-bias additive manufacturing (MBAM) toolpaths. While several high-profile projects including the University of Stuttgart ICD/ITKE Research Pavilions 2014–15 and 2016–17, ETH-Digital Building Technologies project Levis Ergon Chair 2018, and 3D printed chair using Robotic Hybrid Manufacturing at Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) 2019, have previously demonstrated the feasibility of 3d printing with either MBAM or sandwich structures, this method for printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic MBAM combines these methods offering the possibility to significantly reduce the weight of spanning or cantilevered surfaces by incorporating the structural logic of open grid-core sandwiches with MBAM toolpath printing. Often built with fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), sandwich structures are a common solution for thin wall construction of compound curved surfaces that require a high strength-to-weight ratio with applications including aerospace, wind energy, marine, automotive, transportation infrastructure, architecture, furniture, and sports equipment manufacturing. Typical practices for producing sandwich structures are labor intensive, involving a multi-stage process including (1) the design and fabrication of a mould, (2) the application of a surface substrate such as FRP, (3) the manual application of a light-weight grid-core material, and (4) application of a second surface substrate to complete the sandwich. There are several shortcomings to this moulded manufacturing method that affect both the formal outcome and the manufacturing process: moulds are often costly and labor intensive to build, formal geometric freedom is limited by the minimum draft angles required for successful removal from the mould, and customization and refinement of product lines can be limited by the need for moulds. While the most common material for this construction method is FRP, our proof-of-concept experiments relied on low-cost thermoplastic using a specially configured pellet extruder. While the method proved feasible for small representative examples there remain significant challenges to the successful deployment of this manufacturing method at larger scales that can only be addressed with additional research. The digital workflow includes the following steps: (1) Create a 3D digital model of the base surface in Rhino, (2) Generate toolpaths for laminar printing in Grasshopper by converting surfaces into lists of oriented points, (3) Generate the structural grid-core using the same process, (4) Orient the robot to align in the direction of the substructure geometric planes, (5) Print the grid core using MBAM toolpaths, (6) Repeat step 1 and 2 for printing the outer surface with appropriate adjustments to the extruder orientation. During the design and printing process, we encountered several challenges including selecting geometry suitable for testing, extruder orientation, calibration of the hot end and extrusion/movement speeds, and deviation between the computer model and the physical object on the build platen. Physical models varied from their digital counterparts by several millimeters due to material deformation in the extrusion and cooling process. Real-time deviation verification studies will likely improve the workflow in future studies.

summary Emerging technologies that use data have contributed to the success of communication all over the world. Social media and gaming industries have already taken advantage of the web to provide synchronous communication and updated information. Conversely, existing methods of communication within the AEC industry require multiple platforms, such as emails and file sharing services in conjunction with 3D Modelling software, to inform changes made by stakeholders, resulting in file duplication and limited accessibility to the latest version, while augmenting existing practice's inefficiency. As communication is critical to the success of a project and should be enhanced, Redback BIM promises to establish a workflow for a dynamic platform, while achieving similar results to that of a 3D modelling program hosted on the web. Using existing open-source web development software, multiple users will be able to collaboratively organise and synchronise changes made to the design scheme in real-time. Features such as this would enable more fluid communication between multiple stakeholders within the life of a project.

summary This paper presents a computational design approach and novel digital fabrication method for an optimized lightweight concrete slab using a 3D-printed formwork. Smart Slab is the first concrete slab fabricated with a 3D-printed formwork. It is a lightweight concrete slab, displaying three-dimensional geometric differentiation on multiple scales. The optimization of slab systems can have a large impact on buildings: more compact slabs allow for more usable space within the same building volume, refined structural concepts allow for material reduction, and integrated prefabrication can reduce complexity on the construction site. Among the main challenges is that optimized slab geometries are difficult to fabricate in a conventional way because non-standard formworks are very costly. Novel digital fabrication methods such as additive manufacturing of concrete can provide a solution, but until now the material properties and the surface quality only allow for limited applications. The fabrication approach presented here therefore combines the geometric freedom of 3D binderjet printing of formworks with the structural performance of fiber reinforced concrete. Using 3D printing to fabricate sand formwork for concrete, enables the prefabrication of custom concrete slab elements with complex geometric features with great precision. In addition, space for building systems such as sprinklers and Lighting could be integrated in a compact way. The design of the slab is based on a holistic computational model which allows fast design optimization and adaptation, the integration of the planning of the building systems, and the coordination of the multiple fabrication processes involved with an export of all fabrication data. This paper describes the context, design drivers, and digital design process behind the Smart Slab, and then discusses the digital fabrication system used to produce it, focusing on the 3D-printed formwork. It shows that 3D printing is already an attractive alternative for custom formwork solutions, especially when strategically combined with other CNC fabrication methods. Note that smart slab is under construction and images of finished elements can be integrated within couple of weeks.

summary In architecture, the use of Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies has been primarily limited to the production of scale models. Its application for functional buildings components has been typically undermined by the long production time, elevated cost to manufacture parts and the low mechanical properties of 3D printed components. As AM becomes faster, cheaper and stronger, opportunities for architectures that make creative use of AM to produce functional architectural pieces are emerging. In this paper, we propose and discuss the application of AM in complex space frames and the theoretical and practical implications. Three built projects by the authors support our hypothesis that AM has a clear application in architecture and that space frames constitutes a promising structural typology. In addition, we investigate how AM can be used to resolve architectural systems beyond structure and enclosure, such as data and power transmission. The paper presents background research and our contribution to the digital design tools, the manufacturing and assembly processes, and the analysis of the performances of the building components and the final built pieces.

summary In architecture, there was an evolution from Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to Building Information Modelling (BIM), but in urban planning and design, where the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are often used, there is no such analogy. This paper reviews research in typo-morphology, a branch of urban morphology, procedural modelling of buildings and cities and 3D city modelling and visualizations. It present a generic morphological structure of urban elements and discusses them as programming classes in City Information Modelling (CIM) and the application of CIM in urban design practice. Urban design can be understood as art of juxtaposing and arranging urban design elements such as streets, sidewalks, buildings, building façades, landscaping, etc. Designing implies experimentation and play for design elements within design worlds. CIM should integrate procedural modelling, urban morphological research with toolboxes of design elements and rules of combinations. CIM should serve as digital design worlds where urban designers can play with design elements, model and analyse urban scenarios with generative procedures, rules and typological processes.

summary This paper describes a general method for synthesizing discrete 2D and 3D output by building probabilistic models of rasterized or voxelized training data, and subsequently synthesizing new data iteratively by substituting cells or groups of cells in accordance with a learned transition matrix. The process is non-deterministic, stochastic and unsupervised. The size of the source data and output is arbitrary, and the source and output data can have an arbitrary set of cell states. Possible variations of the process are discussed, as well as possible applications in design processes on multiple scales.

keywords This paper documents the steps followed to design and construct an oval shaped, high rise structure in Limassol Cyprus. The author presents the developed computational framework which was purposely built to support multiple levels and disciplines of design, construction and digital fabrication leading to a successful delivery of a complex geometry project within time and budget. A fully informed model involving multi-disciplinary data ranging from its conception to its completion establishes a sustainable paradigm for the construction industry, mainly because of its single source of control as opposed to other precedents involving multiple models and information.

summary The increasing housing shortage in contemporary Poland calls for efficient ways of design and construction. In the context of time efficiency and shrinking manpower, prefabrication is considered as one of the means of introducing low and middle income housing to the market. The article presents the process of developing an experimental tool for aiding multi-family housing architectural design with the use of prefabrication. We use the potential of BIM technology as a flexible environment for comparing multiple design options and, therefore, supporting the decision-making process. The presented experiment is realized in the Autodesk Revit environment and incorporates custom generative scripts developed in Dynamo-for-Revit and Grasshopper. The prototype tool analyzes an input Revit model and simulates a prefabricated alternative based on the user-specified boundary conditions. We present our approach to the analyzing and the splitting of the input model as well as five different strategies of performing the simulation within the Revit environment.

summary The constant development of Building Information Modelling and Virtual reality in architecture and construction has gone beyond visualization and marketing in architecture to enhancing workflows of architects with assets such as immersion and interaction that assists Architects to make more informed decisions from design to construction. Using virtual reality complex decisions can be simulated and analyzed to produce iterations for the optimizing design. Recently, safety design to protect users from the risk of life has become an issue. BIM and VR for Safety Design is a beneficial collaboration for the designer to experience user safety in a virtual built environment immersively. There is a need for intensive experimentation and simulation into user-centered design safety due to the complexity of this part of the design process. The most unpredictable elements of user design safety is human behavior. this paper explores Human behavior using intelligent virtual agents in emergency situations, as this is when user safety is at highest risk in a built environment. In this paper, we explore the potential of a BIM based VR and human behavior simulation in relation to emergency situations.

summary Considering the outdoor environment at the initial stage of design process plays a significant role on future building performance. Augmented Reality (AR) technology applied in this research can integrate real world building morphology information and virtual world ventilation information seamlessly that rapidly and directly provides designers information for observation and evaluation. During the case study of "2017 Shanghai DigitalFUTURE" summer workshop, a research on augmented reality technology based wind environment visualization was carried on. The achievement with an application software not only showed the geometric information of the real world objects (such as buildings), but also the virtual wind environment has displayed. Thus, these two kinds of information can complement and superimpose each other. This AR technology based software brings multiple synthetic together, which can (1) visualize the air flow around buildings that provides designers rapid and direct information for evaluation; (2) deal with wind-environment-related data quantitatively and present in an intuitive, easy-to-interpret graphical way; and (3) be further developed as a visualization system based on built-in environments in the future, which contributes to rapid evaluation of a series of programs at the beginning of the building design.
