summary BIM technology has represented an advance and a break of the design process’ paradigm, impacting both academia and construction market. Reporting a didactic experience in the Civil Engineering graduation, this article aims to understand the teaching and learning process of graphic representation, by using CAD and BIM tools. The research included Literature Review and Empirical Study, whose data collection was based on the application of questionnaires, practical exercises and theoretical test with the students. As a contribution, we highline the complementary nature of the tools and the potentialities of BIM for teaching graphic representation.

summary Japanese building and construction industry expect BIM for the rescue of forecasted workforce shortage due to the population aging. Although the use of BIM has been spreading over past years, the progress of BIM implementation in Japan is slow. This paper aims to identify the obstructive factor for industry's smooth transformation. First, the authors analyze Japenese BIM protocols, which includes BIM standards and guidelines, to understand the status of useful information publically available. Second, multiple BIM surveys which targeted Japanese architect and contractor firms are examined to overview the situation from practitioners' point of view. Finally, the discussion and conclusion are led to find the fundamental issue to expedite the extensive use of BIM in Japanese architecture, engineering, and construction field.

summary The use of technology instigates student interest. Thus, the possibilities offered by the technologies should be presented to students during their professional training. This paper aims to propose to teachers a change in the approach of 'geometry' contents through the use of BIM, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Rapid Prototyping and Digital Fabrication. The methodology chosen was Systematic Review of Literature and literature review without meta-analysis. It presents an overview of the applicability of such technologies in teaching, as well as possibilities little explored. The results indicate that 'geometry' teaching can benefit from the great potential offered by Information and Communication Technologies.

summary Increasing use of BIM has represented a continuing shift in traditional assumptions on how we navigate the design process. BIM is affording the student the ability to gain a greater understanding of their design ideas via the exploration of scale, spatial organisation and structure, amongst many other design layers, in increasing levels of detail, at the same point in the design process. Architectural education is at a delayed tipping point where architectural students are increasingly looking towards BIM to streamline their design process drawn by the production of realistic visualisation, but with a lack of knowledge and skill in its application. With a lack of guidance and understanding around the application of BIM, the use of BIM in this manner overlooks the potential of BIM to construct and test virtual simulations of proposed schemes, to support design enquiry. A historical concern for the pedagogy constructed around the students’ design process is the application of methods and techniques that support the progression through the design process, (Ambrose, 2014; dash mei & Safari, 2018). This study examines the design process of architectural students and the interaction between analogue and digital methods used in design. These primary modes of communication, offer the opportunity to query the roles and rules of traditional architectural conventions around ‘problem finding’ and ‘problem solving’, challenging the ‘traditional’ design process examined by pioneers like Bruner (1966) and Schon (1987). These approaches are distilled from the findings of the study and presented as guidance to those teaching in architectural aBIMemia to align pedagogic goals to methods of abstraction in this new era of design education reconsidering digital methods in design.

title Usability of contemporary tools for the computational design of architectural objects: Review, features evaluation and reflection

summary This article is an overview focused on functionality and usability of selected contemporary approaches for the computational floor plan generation of architectural objects. This article describes current solutions for generative architectural design and focuses on their usability from the point of view of architectural design practice. Recent research papers and prototypes, as well as the most important tools (selected computer-aided design and BIM software) for generative design from the architectural perspective, are described. The functionalities and level of usability of present-day software and prototypes are described. In addition, the descriptive review of the research prototypes architectural design outcomes is present. Furthermore, the survey among active architects regarding the usage of computational tools in the professional practice and possible guidelines for the development of such tools are present. This article summarises with the conclusion about the current state of generative floor plan design tools, the lack of fully functional and developed commercial tools of this type on the market and future directions for the development of generative floor plans tools.

title Collaborative or adversarial production and BIM: a method for better understanding of contracting types, based on BPMN

summary BIM represents a paradigm change in the production process, and its use can be facilitated or hindered by the contracting scheme. Contracting can be relational or transactional; the first refers to collaboration and the second to an adversarial environment. In literature, the different contracting schemes are presented in textual form, which is not the best format to analyze similarities and differences among them. A graphical form for comparison is proposed, using the well-known diagrams of AIA and the BPMN notation. A collaborative production process favors integration and the use of BIM, resulting in more efficiency and quality of the project.

summary Digital Fabrication has been widely used for the production of standardized building components, but not so in the engineered-to-order fabrication strategy, a system in which the customer’s needs are fulfilled in the design stage. Mass Customization meets the demands of a customer at a cost near that of Mass Production. This study presents the current stage of an Action Research dealing with Mass Customization, design and BIM adoption challenges, proposing the adoption of BIM aiming Mass Customization at engineered-to-order systems for Small and Medium Enterprises. It uses Web-based User Interface and Revit and Dynamo models exported to Computer Numerical Control machines.

summary This paper presents the results obtained through the development of furniture kits and physical model, aiming to compare the minimum design requirements described in the anthropometric ergonomics, current housing program and construction law. The qualitative approach through bibliographical and documentary revision allowed the choice of technical representation, using BIM software for design and subsequent digital prototyping. It concludes that the creation of environments according to the minimum requirements does not allow the use of space according to its purpose, and by making use of furniture kits, it is possible to obtain experiments and better understanding.

summary To improve environmental wellbeing and productivity, design innovation focuses on human's use-process, evolving individual space to flexible and specialized ones, according to the users' tasks - activity-based. BIM models supports sophisticated behaviours' simulation such as energy, acoustics, although it is not able to manage space use-processes. The present paper rather than a report of a case study or the presentation of a new methodology wants to contribute, together with previous works, in sketching a theroretical framework within which it is possible to compute the interaction between users and spaces (and vice versa). The quest is to reflect on possible paths for engineering knowledge and understanding, providing a BIM system the semantic information required to operate adaptively and achieve robust and innovative goal-directed behavior. Compared to current research on simulation systems, this research approach links Context, intended as spaces capabilities to Actor's Behavioural Knowledge including formalization of personality typologies and profiled behavioural patterns. By means of a classical problem solving metaphor, the "squared peg in a round hole" one, multiple categories for goal achievement are sketched, based on reciprocal Actors and Context behaviour adaptation.

summary Although BIM has been transforming the AEC industry worldwide, the quality of BIM education is still unclear. In an effort to investigate the current state of BIM integration into higher education curricula, the main goal of this study was to evaluate, compare, and reflect on students’ proficiency in BIM between two very distinct graduate courses in Brazil and in the United States. Findings suggest a critical lack of knowledge, either foundational (in the U.S.) or procedural knowledge (in Brazil). Finally, measures that could improve the students’ proficiency in BIM are suggested.

summary Building Information Modeling (BIM) has provided a new level of technology and efficiency to the construction industry, making production processes more integrated and proficient. This type of innovation is a complex implementation process with many gaps that must be addressed. This article highlights the challenges of implementing BIM, discussing strategies to transform this scenario. The methodology is developed from synthesizing the literature and analyzing semistructured interviews with architects. The results, obtained through content analysis, are explained by the subdivision of the implementation challenges in the following categories: human factor, management, policy, market, and technology.

summary Digital technologies and contemporary CAAD systems are increasingly being adopted in architectural practice. Thus, their impacts on buildings design process need to be addressed and explored, as there are signs of a potential revolution in AEC industry. This paper presents a methodology and preliminary results of a work-in-progress for a Master of Science dissertation. The main purpose of the study is to find similarities in practice in order to determine main characteristics and fundamentals of contemporary design process. It consists of a design praxiology approach according to Cross' taxonomy of design research. Three project cases developed by digital processes and explored by secondary data from literature reviews, complemented by documentary research, are presented as preliminary results, as well as their main similarities. Through the analysis of the cases, it was verified that the presence of BIM, parametric modeling and digital fabrication overlaps and promotes holistic and largely collaborative design processes. The role of collaboration is highlighted, which was presented as a key factor for the success of the projects. Future results from the described methodology should allow a more detailed and in-depth characterization of the contemporary design process.

summary This paper investigates through a review of the current literature on smart cities, reflecting different concepts across different political-social contexts, seeking to contribute to the establishment of a critical framework for smart cities development. The present work provides a review of the literature of 250 selected publications from four databases (Scielo, ScienceDirect, worldwide science, and Cumincad), covering the years from 2012 to 2018. Publications were categorised by the following steps: 3RC framework proposed by Kummitha and Crutzen (2017), the main political sectors of city planning, implementation strategies, computational techniques, and organisation rules. The information was analised graphically trying to identify tendencies along the time, and also, seeking to explore future possibilities for implementations in different political-social contexts. As a case of study, Australia and Brazil were compared using the proposed framework.

summary Beyond the benefits of standard documentation agreeance and project management coordination, many architects and other design professionals express concern over the limitation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) process may have on the design process, or better yet social responsibility or ecological benefit. For Living Wall facade exploration, this research suggests BIM is arguably an effective tool to support innovation in the design process, as well as promote collaboration between ecology and architecture disciplines. Ecological measures and data collection evidence further validates BIM procedural clarity and recognizes building façade exploration both technologically and environmentally.

summary Scripting, BIM and Digital Fabrication are already recognized as important skills in education and practice in Architecture in the 21st century. However, they are not always applied together to generate innovative results for the industry. This paper starts from the observation of the difficulty that prefabricated bathroom factories have in meeting a demand for mass customization and proposes a workflow that goes from the generation of layouts to modeling in BIM and the automated production of documents for manufacturing. The preliminary results demonstrate the possibility of changing the mass production culture of an industry, by means of applying the proposed workflow.

summary In the recent decades, the high-resolution remote sensing, through 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry benefited historic buildings maintenance, conservation, and restoration works. However, the dense surface models (DSM) generated from the data capture have nonstructured features as lack of topology and semantic discretization. The process to create a semantically oriented 3D model from the DSM, using the of Building Information Model technology, is a possibility to integrate historical information about the life cycle of the building to maintain and improving architectural valued building stock to its functional level and safeguarding its outstanding historical value. Our approach relies on an ontology-based system to represent the knowledge related to the building. Our work outlines a model-driven approach based on the hybrid data acquisition, its post-processing, the identification of the building' main features for the parametric modeling, and the development of an ontological map integrated with the BIM model. The methodology proposed was applied to a large-scale industrial historical building, located in Brazil. The DSM were compared, providing a qualitative assessment of the proposed method.

summary Architects rely on the graphic language of words and art to bridge intention and design, just as it has always been. Yet, passing an idea or concept from mental imagery to design practice through 2D, 3D, and 4D design filters is especially challenging in BIM technology. Severe limitations hinder or even preclude BIMs use in certain complex design tasks, as identified in the Anti-Box, "The anti-box celebrates the death of the ninety-degree angle- in fact, every angle." (de Graaf 2017). Compatibility and constraints determine the most appropriate uses of BIM software, from designing mundane shopping mall developments to complex architectural engineering feats that stagger the imagination. BIM's main benefit is in the middle when it is creatively employed by professional architects in multi-discipline collaborations, well versed in symbolic representation, of designs conceived of multivalent design factors: narrative, form, function, multi-sensory access, materiality, space, and environment.

summary This paper discusses the authors’ experiences and lessons learned through designing and constructing small- and large-scale robotic prototypes and the fully integrated use of VR and AR for design. Also of focus here are the methodological tools utilized to implement this student-led research in an interdisciplinary educational environment, as well as the design explorations of Mars habitation systems. Through the systems engineering approach, students will generate ideas that may or may not make it to the final design development stage, but may potentially be valuable to future real exploration habitats and mission architectures. The final prototype allows an assessment of the focus parameters, which are the vessels’ transformation capacities and layout adaption. The design objective of this project is to examine strategies for commonality between an interplanetary vehicle (IPV) and a Mars surface habitat. The presented design proposals address this challenge to create a common habitation system in both habitats so that crew members will be familiar with the layout, function, and location throughout the expedition. The design tools operate at the intersection of architectural layout design, mechanics, and structural design, and use origami folding techniques and structural form-finding concepts to generate shell action rigidity. In addition, the project develops a strategy for mobility and transformation of the surface habitat prior to its transformed configuration. The value here lies in understanding lessons from this strategy for both the design process as well as efficiency and optimization in design as a model for terrestrial design.
