summary The increased interactivity of digital simulation tools has offered a wide range of opportunities that may provoke a paradigmatic shift in urban design practice. Yet, research results did not provide any clear evidence that such shift seems to exist. Further studies are required to examine the methods and impact of their usage on decision-making and design outcome. To that goal, this research uses the single-case study design that has been pursued in three phases: literature review, online survey, and semi-structured interviews. The results have shown inadequacies, inconsistency, and ineffectiveness of usage of the tools that are most appropriate to the design activities of each phase and thus a limited impact on critical areas of the decision-making. The impact of the tools' usage is found to be correlated with not only the extent of their usage, but also with a variety of procedural and substantive factors such as the plan methodology, extent of tool's usage, choice of the appropriate tool, and planners' skills and capabilities in using those tools.

summary This paper investigates through a review of the current literature on smart cities, reflecting different concepts across different political-social contexts, seeking to contribute to the establishment of a critical framework for smart cities development. The present work provides a review of the literature of 250 selected publications from four databases (Scielo, ScienceDirect, worldwide science, and Cumincad), covering the years from 2012 to 2018. Publications were categorised by the following steps: 3RC framework proposed by Kummitha and Crutzen (2017), the main political sectors of city planning, implementation strategies, computational techniques, and organisation rules. The information was analised graphically trying to identify tendencies along the time, and also, seeking to explore future possibilities for implementations in different political-social contexts. As a case of study, Australia and Brazil were compared using the proposed framework.

summary The use of technology instigates student interest. Thus, the possibilities offered by the technologies should be presented to students during their professional training. This paper aims to propose to teachers a change in the approach of 'geometry' contents through the use of BIM, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Rapid Prototyping and Digital Fabrication. The methodology chosen was Systematic Review of Literature and literature review without meta-analysis. It presents an overview of the applicability of such technologies in teaching, as well as possibilities little explored. The results indicate that 'geometry' teaching can benefit from the great potential offered by Information and Communication Technologies.

summary This paper discusses the relevance of CAVE systems in comparison with virtual and augmented reality head-mounted displays in terms of immersion experience, costs, maintenance, ease to use, interactivity, and social interaction. It is based on a comparative study of a systematic literature review comprising the works available at CumInCAD and IEEE databases in the period from 1998-2018, and empirical data from technical visits made to five CAVEs in Europe. The discussion seeks to cover the limits of each technology and questions the need for CAVEs nowadays.

summary This paper presents a comparative study of Dense Stereo Matching (DSM) tools to generate point cloud from digital photogrammetric restitution. The capability of four different state-of-the-art software systems as Photoscan (Agisoft), 3DF Zephyr Free (3Dflow), Remake (Autodesk) and Recap 360 (Autodesk) is examined to document a historical object. The main aspects compared are: processing time, export file formats, file size, quality and density of point clouds obtained from tools standard parameters. From the literature review, the analysis and the experiments, it is possible to evaluate the potential of DSM technique for the existing building documentation.

summary BIM technology has represented an advance and a break of the design process’ paradigm, impacting both academia and construction market. Reporting a didactic experience in the Civil Engineering graduation, this article aims to understand the teaching and learning process of graphic representation, by using CAD and BIM tools. The research included Literature Review and Empirical Study, whose data collection was based on the application of questionnaires, practical exercises and theoretical test with the students. As a contribution, we highline the complementary nature of the tools and the potentialities of BIM for teaching graphic representation.

summary "Smart City" business model is guiding the development of future metropolises. Software industry sales to town halls for city management services efficiency improvement are, these days, a very pro?table business. Being the model decided by the industry, it can develop into a dangerous situation in which the basis of the new city design methodologies is decided by agents outside academia expertise. Drawing on complex science, social physics, urban economics, transportation theory, regional science and urban geography, the Lab is dedicated to the systematic analysis of, and theoretical speculation on, the recently coined "Science of Cities" discipline. On the research agenda there are questions arising from the synthesis of architecture, urban design, computer science and sociology. Collaboration with citizens through inclusion and empowerment, and, relationships "City-Data-Planner-Citizen" and "Citizen-Design-Science", configure Lab's methodology provoking a dynamic responsive process of design that is yet missing on the path towards the real responsive city.

summary This paper discusses the potential of using data from social media and location data platforms to create cartographies that enhance our understanding of urban dynamics. Natural Language Processing (NLP) and sentiment analysis are highlighted as essential tools for comprehending and categorizing this data. The study conducted a systematic review of NLP and sentiment analysis applications in urban studies, covering 27 peer-reviewed journals and conference papers published between 2018 and 2023. The research classified applications into six categories: urban livability, governance and management, user and landscape perception, land use and zoning, public health, and transportation and mobility. Most studies primarily relied on data from social media platforms like Twitter and location data sources such as Google Maps and Trip Advisor. Challenges include dealing with irrelevant or misleading information in publicly available data and limited accuracy when analyzing sentiments of non-English-speaking populations.

summary This article presents a literature review on the relationship between urban design and travel demand, and systematically maps existing studies in generative, parametric and procedural urban modeling that have approached the subject. The methods used in these papers are discussed, and the computational tools described in them are analyzed to identify how they can be used to support the design process for retrofitting urban streets. The findings are used to identify what further developments are needed in order to allow for visualizing the impact of design decisions on modal share.

summary We present a proof of concept implementation of an integration strategy for connecting CAD with Blockchain. We explain the components of most blockchains and the value they bring to the built environment ecosystem, the potential impact a complete integration might have and we demonstrate the first two of four levels of integration we have identified between CAD and blockchain technologies. For the purposes of the paper we use Rhino / Grasshopper and Ethereum as the two components of integration.

summary This paper aims to link the blockchain technology with property issues and in extend architectural design decisions at the urban scale. In an urban design context, this paper investigates the new potentials of urban form connected to the application of the logic of the blockchain to urban design. With this, the article concentrates on the distributed way of sharing information, with no intent to focus on cryptography issues related to the blockchain. Transferring the blockchain's core concepts of data distribution through ledgers, to patterns of shared and private owned spaces it can lead to what we propose as polyphonic spaces, with overlapping uses. Urban realm, designed as a chain, initiates with the binary condition of private and shared but handles it as a way to interact, through nesting, its initial parts. summary The design and construction of the complex, irregularly shaped, and curvilinear building forms are also known as freeform architecture, have gained an interest form architects and engineers. This paper presents how freeform façade designs are defined with its curvilinear geometric characteristics and the systematic approach that is used to design and implement them. The proposed method incorporates product design and integral façade construction approach at AFA Cultural Center freeform façade implementation. Therefore, the paper aims to improve the viability of the proposed method and decreasing the gap between the other disciplines and architects in a systematic way without losing the creativity of the architects.

summary Generative systems have a significant potential to synthesize innovative design alternatives. Still, most of the common systems that have been adopted in design require the designer to explicitly define the specifications of the procedures and in some cases the design space. In contrast, a generative system could potentially learn both aspects through processing a database of existing solutions without the supervision of the designer. To explore this possibility, we review recent advancements of generative models in machine learning and current applications of learning techniques in design. Then, we describe the development of a data-driven generative system titled DeepCloud. It combines an autoencoder architecture for point clouds with a web-based interface and analog input devices to provide an intuitive experience for data-driven generation of design alternatives. We delineate the implementation of two prototypes of DeepCloud, their contributions, and potentials for generative design.

summary According to one of the Sustainable Development Goals (UN, 2018), it is important for cities to be inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Therefore, it is necessary to value pedestrians and consequently active mobility, giving priority to the concepts of the Transportation Oriented Development (TOD) methodology. Although the Master Plan (BELO HORIZONTE, 2019) proposes that areas located in regional centralities are enhancing active mobility, can residents actually benefit from these resources at a walkable distance to access basic services? Thus, the aim of this research is to utilize digital technologies to visualize, analyze, and assess pedestrians' access conditions to commerce and basic services, identifying areas lacking infrastructure. The goal is for the model to serve as a reference for the development of public policies. To achieve this, metadata was used for parametric modeling to study walkability in the peripheral region of the city of Belo Horizonte.

summary According to one of the Sustainable Development Goals (UN, 2018), it is important for cities to be inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Therefore, it is necessary to prioritize pedestrians and promote active mobility, giving them priority and encouraging walking, as presented in the concepts of TOD (Transit-Oriented Development). Although the master plan suggests that areas located in the regional centrality of Belo Horizonte are enhancing active mobility, residents may still need to use individual or public transportation due to long distances when accessing basic services on foot. In peripheral areas of the city of Belo Horizonte, are there favorable walkability conditions for the residents? Thus, the aim of this research is to use digital technologies to investigate, through a parametric performative model, the quality of the existing routes, with a focus on the peripheral areas of the city. Based on the results obtained, it will be possible to conclude whether there are discrepancies between what is presented in the master plan and, ultimately, to identify potential solutions for the area based on metrics that qualify and enhance active mobility. These solutions may vary according to the specific needs of the location.

summary This paper presents data visualizations of an intelligent environment that were designed to serve the needs of two stakeholder groups: visitors wanting to understand how that environment operates, and developers interested in optimizing it. The visualizations presented here were designed for [Amatria], a sentient sculpture built by the Living Architecture Systems Group (LASG) at Indiana University Bloomington, IN, USA, in the spring of 2018. They are the result of an extended collaboration between LASG and the Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science Center (CNS) at Indiana University. We introduce [Amatria], review related work on the visualization of smart environments and sentient architectures, and explain how the Data Visualization Literacy Framework (DVL-FW) can be used to develop visualizations of intelligent interactive systems (IIS) for these two stakeholder groups.

summary The identity of an urban environment is important because it contributes to self-identity, a sense of community, and a sense of place. However, under present-day conditions, the identities of expanding cities are rapidly deteriorating and vanishing, especially in the case of Asian cities. Therefore, cities need to build their urban identity, which includes the past and points to the future. At the same time, cities need to add new features to improve their livability, sustainability, and resilience. In this paper, using data mining technologies for various types of geo-referenced big data and combine them with the space syntax analysis for observing and learning about the socioeconomic behavior and the quality of space. The observed and learned features are identified as the urban identity. The numeric features obtained from data mining are transformed into catalogued levels for designers to understand, which will allow them to propose proper designs that will complement or improve the local traditional features. A workshop in Taiwan, which focuses on a traditional area, demonstrates the result of the proposed methodology and how to transform a traditional area into a livable area. At the same time, we introduce a website platform, Quick Urban Analysis Kit (qua-kit), as a tool for citizens to participate in designs. After the workshop, citizens can view, comment, and vote on different design proposals to provide city authorities and stakeholders with their ideas in a more convenient and responsive way. Therefore, the citizens may deliver their opinions, knowledge, and suggestions for improvements to the investigated neighborhood from their own design perspective.

summary Accuracy and time are metrics inherently associated with the design process and the energy performance simulation of buildings. The accurate representation of the building is an essential requirement for energy analysis, which comes with the expense of time; however, this is in contrast with the need to minimise the simulation time in order to make it compatible with design times. This is a particularly interesting aspect in the case of complex geometries, which are often simplified for use in building energy performance simulation. The effects of this simplification on the accuracy of simulation results are not usually reported. This paper explored these effects through a systematic analysis of several test cases. The results indicate that the use of orthogonal prisms as simplified surrogates for buildings with complex shapes presents a worst-case scenario that should be avoided where possible. A significant reduction of geometry complexity by at least 50% can also be achieved with negligible effects on simulation results, while minimising the time requirements. Accuracy, however, deteriorates rapidly below a critical threshold.
